Christopher Landon - director of Happy Death Day and Freaky - is back with his latest film, Drop. I was a HUGE fan of both of those crowd-pleasing, horror-comedies (one of the most underutilized genres in Hollywood today) but I didn't quite love the premise or trailer for Drop. I don't know if that's because I was expecting kind of his usual shtick of a fun sci-fi spin on a slasher. Even Heart Eyes, which he wrote alongside one of his Freaky co-writer Michael Kennedy, was a slasher combined with another genre, rom-coms. And, to great success I might add. I just thought the premise required such a crazy leap of suspension of disbelief that I just couldn't get into the idea. Did the film win me over? Nothing says romance like flowers, chocolates - and a masked serial killer terrorizing young couples. Welcome to "Heart Eyes," the latest horror-romantic comedy hybrid that slashes into theaters on February 7—just in time to make Valentine's Day a little bloodier. In this episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo sits down with director Josh Ruben to talk about the challenge of blending rom-com sweetness with slasher-movie carnage, his deep love of horror, and why this story stands apart from others in the genre. Written by Christopher Landon, Phillip Murphy, and Michael Kennedy, "Heart Eyes" follows a masked killer who has made February 14 a date night to die for, quite literally. The film stars Olivia Holt, Mason Gooding, Devon Sawa, Jordana Brewster, and more. During the interview, Director Josh Ruben details the delicate balancing act of making “Heart Eyes” work on all fronts. “I didn't want it to be too funny—I wanted it to go darker, gorier,” Ruben admitted. But at the same time, the romance had to feel genuine. “If I could find two leads with real chemistry, I could pay loving homage to the rom-coms I grew up on—'Pretty Woman,' 'Defending Your Life,' 'My Best Friend's Wedding,' even 'Big.”
The Reckless is excited to share their newest EP, Who Are You, after a string of singles over the past few years. The titular track “Who Are You” is a powerhouse debut of their evolved sound and welcomes listeners to a new era of The Reckless.Since its debut, the band has undergone a complete sound evolution. The Reckless began during the pandemic as a one-man show by frontman Fritz Fayman. Joined by talented musicians who shared his vision, Fayman soon welcomed bassist Michael Kennedy, who would become a mainstay member. During this period, the band released one EP, The Get in a Fight EP, while trying to strike harmony with fleeting band members. Soon after, they encountered Riku Myllykoski, who joined the group on drums. Within months, John Kelly joined on guitar to complete the group.“Our sound has become more advanced with our current crew,” shares Fritz Fayman. “Everyone is doing more to the song—it's not just me writing everything. Everyone is doing their parts, which allows for a blending of our styles. There is a level of humility amongst all our band members. We're each figuring out what we're good at and combining influences and sounds to reach our potential and continued potential.” Support the show

Genevieve Willis from London, Ontario asks: Is there any evidence to suggest that “getting cold” by, say, dressing inadequately in cold weather, or sitting in a cold draft, actually increases our susceptibility to illness? For the frigid answer, we spoke with Michael Kennedy who is an associate professor of exercise physiology at the University of Alberta. Jim Raso from St. Albert Alberta wrote us: My question has to do with our sense of time passing. As I have gotten older – I am 73 now – I noticed that time seemed to pass more quickly. Why does this happen? For the answer, we asked Dr. Holly K. Andersen, a professor of philosophy at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia.Dan from Chateau-Richer in Quebec writes: Where does moon dust come from?We reached out to planetary geologist Gordon Osinski, a professor of Earth Sciences at Western University, who has studied samples sent back from the Apollo missions. Scott Beach from East York Ontario asks: Why do dogs sniff and lick each other's butts? To get the answer, we reached out to Simon Gadbois, the principal investigator at the Canine olfaction lab at Dalhousie University.Robert Smith from Victoria asks: Is there evidence to suggest red-heads are particularly sensitive to pain? To find out, we spoke with someone who has studied this in the past: Jeffrey Mogil, the E.P. Taylor Professor of Pain Studies at the Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain at McGill University.Stephen Quinn from St. John's, Newfoundland asks: How can the universe be expanding at the same time as galaxies are colliding? For the smashing answer, we spoke with Sara Ellison, a professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Victoria. Susan Boyd from Ottawa asks: Since some of the elements in the periodic table do not occur naturally, is there a limit to the new elements that could be created? If so, what is the limiting factor? We went to the National Research Council Canada's element expert, Juris Meija, for this answer. Robert LaRoche in Halifax asks: Why is the color of wet clothes always more vivid than when they are dry?For the answer, we turned to Sarah Purdy, a Physicist at the University of Saskatchewan who uses light to investigate materials. Paul Vander Griendt of Newmarket, Ontario asks: If animals wake up at sunrise and go to sleep at sunset, how do they cope with the varying hours of sunlight? How do they do compared to humans who are supposed to get 8 to 9 hours of sleep regardless of the length of sunlight? For the answer we turned to Ming Fei Li a Phd candidate at the University of Toronto in Anthropology who is studying the sleep patterns of animals. Marie Beaudoin from Salt Spring Island, BC asks: How do birds where the males and females look the same tell each other apart when it comes to mating?” We went to Matt Reudinik, a professor of biology at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, for the answer. A Fan-Favorite Reprise Episode From Season One:Prior to May 5, 1980, the world was largely unaware that the UK's SAS (Special Air Service), or any elite special operations units, existed at all. Six days earlier, terrorists had stormed the Iranian Embassy in London and taken 21 hostages. As the situation was being covered on live TV around the world, the SAS attacked the embassy. HBH is honored to be joined by two members of that elite SAS team, Pete Winner and Sekonaia ‘Tak' Takevisi. The terrorists had not anticipated a violent response to their actions. However, what they received when UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher gave ‘Operation Nimrod' the go ahead, was the full force of the most precise military instrument at her disposal: the SAS. The SAS made an example of the terrorists for all the world to see. As a result, overnight, the SAS, also known as ‘The Regiment', became famous around the world - a world that did not know soldiers of this caliber existed. We thank Pete and Tak for taking the time to join us and reliving their experience from the day that put special forces on the map, permanently. Pete Winner is the author of his bestselling memoir ‘SOLDIER, I', which he wrote with Michael Kennedy.

Did you miss it? One of the most popular episodes we ever released from Season One is back for an encore listen:Russian and Chinese-backed rebels were making deadly headway in Oman during its Civil War of the early 1970s. In support of the Western-allied Sultan, the British Army secretly deployed nine operators from its most elite unit, the SAS. HBH is honored to have our guest, Pete Winner, with a special appearance by Sekonaia ‘Tak' Takevisi, two of the nine SAS heroes who took on over 400 Omani rebels at the Battle of Mirbat. At stake on July 19th 1972 was more than just a single battle for a small town on the Gulf of Oman. Due to Mirbat's geographic significance, had the SAS fallen the communist rebels would have taken hold of the region – and controlled the global shipping routs for Middle Eastern oil. Statues of individual soldiers are rare, but due to his heroism at the Battle of MIrbat, there are not one but two statues of Sergeant Talaiasi Labalaba. One unveiled in 2009 at the SAS headquarters in Herefordshire, and another in 2018 by Harry and Megan, Duke and Duchess of Sussex, in Fiji - which at the time of Labalaba's enlistment was still a British colony.Pete Winner is the author of his bestselling memoir "SOLDIER, I," which he wrote with Michael Kennedy.
(Recorded live on Sat 17 Aug '24 @ the Electric Picnic) Thanks to UCC's Irish Civil War Fatalities project we now have a definite figure—1,485. But in this discussion, chaired by History Ireland editor Tommy Graham, with John Dorney, Pádraig Óg Ó Ruairc, Michael Kennedy and Caitlin White, we find out a lot more—not only who was killed but also when, where, in what circumstances, and how they were commemorated.
For episode 200, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes, with fellow co-host Steve Prusakowski continuing to handle the behind the scenes work. 200 baby! It's pretty surreal, I must say, but even more so when you consider that you all seem to like what we do. Hey, I won't disabuse you of that notion. As for the episode itself? There's plenty here to celebrate. You'll hear some messages from prior guests, including writer Michael Kennedy (guest here and interview subject here), as well as a special appearance from actor, comedian, and Doughboys co-host Mike Mitchell (interviewed here). We also discuss M. Night Shyamalan's new film Trap, alongside my ranking here of his films (Myles' review is here). I briefly mention Cuckoo (reviewed here), while plenty of you sent in questions (alongside congratulations that we really appreciate). Throw in some of our favorite games at the end, as well as previous episode memories, and it's a good time. 200 more? I think so... As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 200th one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!

We begin to think about return from the underworld. In myths of journeys to the underworld, the protagonists must always figure out how to return alive. So, what's the trick to allow you return safely and bring whatever treasure or knowledge back with you to use in life on the surface, in the sunlight? Today, we spend time with a part of the college that depends on constantly engaging attempt and failure and revision and new heights: our college writing classes. Our guest is Michael Kennedy, new hire in the English Department, and an instructor who is deeply invested in teaching students where they are. Michael talks about writing as a chance for learners to "fall in love with their own mind" because through writing (and writing again and again) we come to better understand our own ideas and thoughts about complex subjects. If students are willing to explore the darkness of uncertainty through writing without fear that they'll be judged or given a failing grade for trying, what might become possible? We also explore another guide for our season in the underworld: the scholar bell hooks. Her ideas about ethical relationship to one another could be another way to face failure in the classroom and turn it into resilience.

PUBLIC VERSION. Screenwriter and Producer Michael Kennedy (FREAKY, IT'S A WONDERFUL KNIFE) joins Adam, Joe, and Arwen in the ArieScope Studio to discuss his career journey. From working as an animation assistant and IT support on FAMILY GUY for 10 years and what it was like when his writing career took off and he was able to head out on his own… to the making of FREAKY and its release during the pandemic.. to defining his voice as a writer and finding his lane… to the comical tribulations of being a writer where others get credit for a writer's wins while the writer takes the blame for aspects that were beyond their control… to the making of his latest film IT'S A WONDERFUL KNIFE and his love for holiday movies… to the look of the villains he has created and the design of their masks… to how heartbreaking it is that so few will ever hear a film's actual sound mix in the modern era of streaming films on tablets, phones, and poorly set up home theater systems… to why “old” can always be “new” again if a story is told with a fresh and original voice… Michael's amazing success story is candidly laid out in this truly honest conversation about the filmmaking process. The group also discusses how unfortunate it is that the original BLACK CHRISTMAS (1974) doesn't get more of the respect it deserves, when it may be better to write a script on spec instead of pitching the idea first, and how even the most well intended decisions by executives to make a film more inclusive can backfire when the audience can tell that they're being pandered to.
Expect to hear from campers Kate Siegel, Mike Flanagan, Wynter Mitchell, David Lowery, Akela Cooper, Steve Agee, Devon Sawa, Josh Ruben, Flula Borg, Michael Kennedy, James Austin Johnson, Chuck Tingle, Laura Lux, Matt Fraction, Daniel Danger, Trae Crowder, Patton Oswalt, David Dastmalchian, David Farrier, Stephen Graham Jones, Dave Schilling, Josh Gondelman, Mallory O'Meara and Josh Robert Thompson as they recount their favorite short stories from Stephen King's Nightmares and Dreamscapes.
