Test Match Special commentator Daniel Norcross sheds a tear as he describes his elevation from founder of internet cricket commentary provider, Test Match Sofa, to one of the BBC's best loved and most enduring products. He explains the joy of cricket, reveals the secrets of his trade, and makes the case for the longest form of the game. Whether or not you like the sport, Norcross shows that in the case of TMS's coverage, it's as much about the commentary as it is about the cricket.

This is Calling the Shots, a six-part documentary podcast with Adam Collins and Daniel Norcross telling the story of a century of cricket commentary. In previous episodes we’ve tracked cricket’s journey on TV and radio. They are stories that have been told before, albeit perhaps not quite in the same way. Today, we’re bringing you a story that has never been told about the disruptors; the men and women who wanted to live their lives in cricket and ended up doing exactly that. To help tell that tale, we have with us four guests. Geoff Lemon - poet, author and broadcaster Jarrod Kimber - writer, talker and filmmaker. Nigel Henderson - guerilla commentator. Andrew Miller - editor of ESPNcricinfo. Calling the Shots is produced in partnership with The Pinch Hitter, a fabulous new initiative from the same people who bring you The Nightwatchman. The digital mag comes out once a fortnight, chock-full of contributions from some of the best freelance writers in the world. It is being made on a pay-what-you-can-afford basis, with all financial contributions going back into commissioning more brilliant cricket writing. Subscribe at thenightwatchman.net. The Sport: Digital and Social podcast has not been going that long but I have already spoken to key personnel at some of the world’s biggest rights-holders. However, this podcast is a little different. Guerilla Cricket, and its previous incarnation Test Match Sofa, are challenging a long-established practice of broadcasting England's national sport. This is not the cosy cake-filled commentary box of the BBC. It beers and banter in a basement flat plus humourous, sometimes sweary, jingles at major moments. (You’ll hear a few of those through this podcast). But real innovation (not just copying and twisting) so often start at this level and has to fight resistance from those in incumbent positions. So is Guerrilla Cricket revolutionary new model for live commentary that could be rolled out across other sports? Or is it just a hobby that can only exist in its sporting niche? Listen to this podcast with co-founder Nigel Walker, make up your own mind and let me know on @SportDigitalandSocial on Instagram @MrRichardClarke or my website MrRichard Clarke.com. Topics: 1.59: Nigel Walker introduces Guerilla Cricket 2.48: The toll taken by through-the-night commentaries on England in Australia 3.41: The backstory of Test Match Sofa and its transformation into Guerilla Cricket 5.38: Why The Cricketer Magazine bought Test Match Sofa and how it went wrong 7.38: The clash of culture 10.10 Why their commentary is not illegal 11.25: The wider role that Guerilla Cricket in bringing a new audience to cricket. “Everyone wants to be a commentator and why can’t you be?” 13.10 The Guerilla Cricket audience and how they use social media.
