This week on The KOKO Show the band is back together to celebrate the fun, frivolity and fineries that finals footy has to offer. We tackle all the action of the Super Rugby Qualifying Finals, whilst also looking forward to the seismically sensational Semi-Finals this coming weekend. Plus, we get a little naughty up North for all the footy loving legends on the more populous side of the Equator, breaking down all the Champagne rugby from the URC and Premiership Semi-Finals. To help us on our journey towards podcasting perfection, we enlisted the help of one of the greatest finishers of all time to dot this episode over the white line and claim victory for the good guys. This Fijian born South Auckland raised wrecking ball made a career out of cashing cheques and snapping necks as he ran past you at a rate of knots, please welcome the swan-diving sensation that is Mr Joe Rokocoko. With Joe in tow the lads reflect on his sublime 98 Test Match career, the times he made all three of them look like chumps and what it actually takes to be one of the best wingers the rugby world has ever seen. To cap off this tremendous trot down the wingers walk of fame the lads finalise a few more selections in our table topping team of ‘Lion Tamers'. Moreover, they have a greasy little gander at some hot off the press ‘Other Rugby News', all in the name of keeping you, our loyal listener well informed. So, book yourself a Swedish hot stone massage, sip on the complementary ice cold cucumber water and bluetooth your way into some KOKO bliss. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, rugby league was a code looking to expand nationally after the success of its premier competition in Sydney. Clubs emerged in Brisbane, Newcastle, and the Gold Coast. Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation took the growth in the sport as an indication it ought to expand even further and plotted a coup, to take the running of the code out of the hands of the establishment - the Australian Rugby League. What followed was a war that ripped the sport apart with Murdoch on one side and the other, backed by another multi-millionaire media mogul, Kerry Packer. It was mogul against mogul, club against club, and players against players. In this episode of Judgements we take a deep dive on how and why the war began - and how the game came back together to form what is now the National Rugby League.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

On 15 March 1877 play began between England and Australia in Melbourne. So began an extraordinary tradition of the finest form of sport: the Test Match. An incredible innovation that involved two teams playing cricket for up to nine days in one case, it is unique in sporting contests. However Test Cricket is bound up by Empire, class and race. Great teams have been barred from competing, and there have been moments of high controversy including Bodyline and the D 'Oliveira Affair. One thing remains constant: the England batting collapse. Joining today is cricket writer Tim Wigmore, journalist at the Telegraph and author of a wonderful new book, Test Cricket: A History. He joins to discuss all the above and more. In this episode of the show, Binksy, Jamie, Baldy and Stu discuss an eventful week, which saw the return of the IPL but not all its players, the Test cricket retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, squad news galore and some potential candidates emerge for the Black Caps coaching role. We start by talking about the IPL's resumption and the players such as Jos Buttler and Mitchell Starc who have decided not to return or will need to depart for the playoff stages as the international calendar fills up again. Does previous form go out the window? And how will teams manage the disruption? Next we discuss the Test Cricket retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. Was it the right time? Brett McKay and Harry Jones jump into the final Test Match post-mortem of the year with no more thought than usual, with this week's fulltime focus on Ireland's patience and Australia's frustrations in the 22-19 result at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, to wrap up the Northern Spring Autumn Series Tours for 2024. A wonderful, gripping contest came from some seriously scrappy rugby – and curious officiating – and that only exaggerates Ireland's relief, while simultaneously driving the Wallabies frustrations at one that really did get away. In a game that would have been a statement win for either side, it was the Scots who maintained their shape, their discipline, and their excellent defence to see off the Wallabies, and with it, another shot at a historic Grand Slam.   Social media: #89Combo Twitter: https://twitter.com/89combo YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@8-9Combo Now on BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/89combo.bsky.social   Brett: https://twitter.com/BMcSport Harry: https://twitter.com/HaribaldiJones You can find Brett and Harry individually on BlueSky, too!   Make sure you FOLLOW US on Spotify! https://open.spotify.com/show/1BcKhb24YOtwQhKc0S3sDm   Find Brett and Harry's written work on RugbyPass and The Roar: Brett: https://www.rugbypass.com/plus/contributor/brett-mckay/ Harry: https://www.theroar.com.au/author/haribaldi/   Music from Uppbeat: https://uppbeat.io/track/oakvale-of-albion/extreme Learn more about your ad choices. For this conversation, Adam has fellow romantic Bharat Sundaresan with him. They start with a hectic week of speculation in Australia (along with retirements, contracts, collapses and suspension cessations!) ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series.
