Dear friends, In a world where international tensions are rising, there seems to be less and less room for nuance and counterarguments. Especially with the NATO World Summit in The Hague taking place (where there is room at the fancy tables for non-NATO members like President Zelensky) — but no space for an alternative voice. Today, we choose freedom of speech. For dialogue instead of enemy-thinking. For listening to those who are excluded. Precisely because the global situation is so dreadful. For peace and because we think it is important to hear both sides: a voice that is banned elsewhere but today, during this crucial moment, is our guest — against all odds: the Ambassador of Russia, Vladimir Tarabrin. In this podcast, we will discuss:

Today, our first guest for the week, Garrett Bowers of Bowers Trucking, explains the significance of face-to-face networking and its role in building relationships within the transportation industry! Garrett highlights how crucial it is to create a personal connection with potential clients, build systems for business development, prospect consistently, enhance transparency, and operate teams efficiently for scalability and profitability! About Garrett Bowers Born and raised in Ponca City, Garrett is a proud alumni of PO-HI where he played football, wrestled, and was highly involved in 4H and FFA. Garrett earned a scholarship to attend Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College for livestock judging and his success there led to scholarship opportunities to join the Oklahoma State University judging team. At OSU, Garrett served as a Senator for the College of Agriculture. His livestock judging team members won several national contests including the coveted national collegiate championship in 2006. He graduated OSU with a bachelor's degree in May of 2007. Although Garrett grew up working alongside his father, Ranond, and grandfather, Glen (who was the founder of Bowers Trucking) – he was no stranger to entrepreneurial ventures. Before the age of 10, he had as many as 20 bottle-fed calves and even sold watermelon and corn in front of the truck yard alongside Highway 60. Later on, at age 16 he started his own custom hay business, which earned him the National FFA Degree recognition in 2004. When Garrett joined the family business after graduation in 2007, Bowers Trucking operated a dozen trucks within a 150-mile radius concentrated on end dump, aggregate, and construction material hauling. By 2010, Garrett diversified operations by redirecting focus to service the vast manufacturing industries located in Ponca City. By 2013, Bowers Trucking was operating in all 48 states and expanded into Canada and Mexico. Increased customer demand ultimately led to Garrett starting his own logistics company to help coordinate customer overflow. In 2016, Bowers Logistics was formed and the first agent was hired to meet the growing customer base with partner trucking companies looking for freight. By 2018, Bowers Trucking and Bowers Logistics became Department of Defense certified – the first trucking company based in Oklahoma to do so. Today, Bowers Trucking and Bowers Logistics employs 58 full-time employees. Together, the companies operate 50 trucks, and 108 trailers and service 5,000+ carrier partners while still retaining their core customer base from over a decade ago. Garrett met his wife Melissa in Athens, Georgia when the Oklahoma State Cowboys played their season opener against the University of Georgia. With some irresistible charm and a truckload of luck, Garrett convinced Melissa to relocate to Ponca City in 2009. Garrett and Melissa have been married for 13+ years, and they have a son, HB, who graduated PO-HI in 2021 and attended Oklahoma State University. Garrett coached HB's elementary year football teams and served on Osage County's Livestock Board, the FFA Booster Club, and the Quarterback Club. He is a graduate of Ponca City Leadership. He currently serves as seat # 3 commissioner for the City of Ponca City and has been an appointed trustee with the Ponca City Development Authority since 2018 and was chosen to serve two terms on U.S. Senator Inhofe's Service Academy Selection Committee. I was invited, thanks to the magnificent and only-ever-positive internet, to give a lecture to colleagues in Nigeria. I'm kidding, a little—the internet can be rough. Ask a comment section of a YouTube video! However, it is also a technology that has brought the world closer together. One of those less absurd corners of the internet is LinkedIn—it's like the world's most boring dad and his boss decided to invite you to a global-scale compliance educational module. “So exciting, it's mandatory!”I am giving the internet a hard time. Sometimes it's a special kind of magic. Like, for example, today. Imagine you are a progressive hospital system in Lagos, such as Gracehill Hospital. Yes, that is in Nigeria. It's a progressive country, compared to the rest of the continent, but some of that progress is recent, as in 2023.A new Mental Health law was recently enacted in Nigeria to replace the Lunacy Ordinance of 1958. The passage of the new law was a major leap from the old. It was received with excitement because the former law was not only outdated but failed to address core issues such as the promotion of mental health and the protection of the rights of the mentally ill.If you're looking to move your healthcare system into the future, you might want to consider finding speakers for your grand rounds. With Zoom, it's easy to host hundreds of people. On LinkedIn, you can see professionals posting about what they are up to. And, if you're bold, you can simply ask one of those folks to speak. Which is what happened to me, and how I found myself drafting a lecture on Bipolar Disorder for an audience of Nigerian (and global—many people, both professionals, patients, and family members attend these seminars!).Nigeria has an estimated 250 practicing psychiatrists for a population of over 220 million (WHO, 2023), amounting to roughly one psychiatrist per 880,000 people. I probably spoke to 1/4 of them yesterday. There are substantial barriers to mental health care in Nigeria—much if it financial. According to the World Bank, Nigeria's Gross National Income (GNI) per capita in 2023 was $2,460 USD. Fewer than 10% of Nigerians have health insurance. Those plans cost $250+ a year, but mental health parity doesn't exist, and thus those services are only covered under yet more expensive plans. To draw a direct comparison, Nigeria has 0.11 psychiatrists /100,000 population. This is similar to Kenya (0.2/100,000) but with 400% more money budgeted to address the care of the population. The US has 13/100,000 and spends about 6.2% of its health budget on mental health care. The question, globally, is how to do more for our patients with less harm and at lower cost. One interventional treatment is considered essential—and its ECT. The WHO's keep an “essential medicines” list! Nigeria has access to ECT. Lithium is also an essential medicine. TMS is not on that list, yet. Maybe, I posit, it should be?What follows in this podcast is the talk I gave. Thanks for reading— and listening. A huge shout out to my gracious hosts at GraceHill, and their Partners, who make this series possible! The Frontier Psychiatrists is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. If you are interested in the Validation Institute's award for Best Mental Health Treatment in 2024, consider Radial. It's where I work, and with locations across the US already, we are working to bring the most advanced mental health care to everyone — and make it accessible. This is a public episode. Jonathan Agnew is alongside former England captains Michael Vaughan & Sir Alastair Cook, and commentator Prakash Wakankar for reaction of the second day's play at Headingley between England and India. They discuss Jasprit Bumrah's brilliance with the ball and England's temperament with the bat.Ben Duckett gives his thoughts on the day after hitting 62.Plus, TMS superfan and Lord's Taverners Super 1s player Ravi is surprised with a trip to the TMS commentary box.
Sometimes I have a free hour or two, and my favorite activity is to put in my AirPods, listen to a podcast, and walk. It feels so free and renewing, and sometimes it's where I come up with my best ideas for this podcast. Recently, I was listening to This American Life, Suddenly!

About Lacey Olson and Amanda Haire Lacey Olson is the Co-owner of Transport Express, a Minnesota-based freight brokerage she acquired with her business partner, Amanda Haire, in 2021. Lisa and I found ourselves talking about a frequently asked question in our communities: Won't thinking about my dark stuff make me worse? This is a typical fear of many people endeavoring TMS work. I have such empathy for the perceived quandary - it makes sense that paying attention to seemingly negative content might make it grow. Yet, we both know this is the opposite of truth. Then Lisa suggested a juxtaposition: let's consider the difference between rumination and excavation. Whereas rumination is automatic and unproductive, excavation is intentional and leads to healing. I took the challenge of explaining it through the lens of JournalSpeak, and here we are! I think this episode will enable you to challenge your resistance and open yourself to the incredible transformation that JournalSpeak offers. Lots of love from both of us!
Send us a textThe mental health landscape has fundamentally shifted, especially in the wake of COVID-19. Rhonda Hodge, founder of Harmony Psychiatric Services, offers a refreshing alternative to the conventional 15-minute medication check-ups that have dominated psychiatric care. With dual credentials as both a therapist and nurse practitioner, Hodge created her practice to treat patients holistically—combining medication management with therapy, movement, and nutrition support. What sets Harmony apart is their commitment to treating humans, not just symptoms. Hodge poignantly shares how witnessing an over-medicated foster child inspired her career pivot: "I had to hold up her head because she was so over-medicated and I just knew that things needed to be done differently." This experience catalyzed her mission to create psychiatric care that truly sees the whole person. Her practice has evolved to include transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for treatment-resistant depression, hiking groups, academic coaching, and executive functioning support. The conversation takes a fascinating turn when Hodge discusses neurodiversity as a brain style rather than a disorder. She celebrates the engineers, entrepreneurs, and brilliant minds who think differently, while acknowledging the pandemic's role in revealing neurodiversity as people lost their ability to "mask" during isolation. Equally compelling is her transparent approach to provider wellness—creating flexible schedules that honor her team's personal lives—which directly translates to better patient care. As mental health needs continue to escalate nationwide, Harmony is expanding geographically while maintaining their person-centered philosophy. Perhaps most touching is Hodge's acknowledgment of how difficult seeking help can be: "That first call is actually really hard to make." Whether you're struggling personally or supporting someone who is, this conversation offers both practical guidance and deeply compassionate insights. Whether you're an aspiring or experienced freight broker, listen to this episode with our returning guest from Rocket Shipping, Gabe Pankonin, as he shares his expert insights on upcoming NMFC code changes! Gabe explains how the NMFC changes could represent a significant shift in transportation, the opportunities for brokers to provide proactive analysis, and more about cold calling success, resolving operational challenges, and understanding the impact of class changes! About Gabe Pankonin Gabe Pankonin has always had a knack for sales and relationships - a skillset that has led him to run a successful, fast-growing freight startup in the industry. After several years servicing E-comm companies moving big and bulky freight, one painful reality set in: Brands had the marketing skills to grow quickly, but they were NO match for outdated LTL shipping solutions. Gabe saw this issue plaguing the LTL space...that as shippers get bigger and start to handle more shipments, half of their business turns into the logistics of just getting things to people's homes Which is why he started Rocket Shipping; Mid-Market Managed Transportation! Rocket's Core Values are an extension of Gabe's deeply held beliefs. Faith, Family, Joy, Grit, and Integrity. Ultimately, the goal Gabe set for Rocket has and always will be to build predictable and repeatable revenue and to impact the people who work with and at Rocket Shipping for many years to come!

Kristin Kay of Manhattan Associates talks about their Active TMS, continuous innovation & automated testing, & why transportation is more complex than ever. IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS: [04.20] An introduction to Kristin, and Manhattan Associates. “We don't view supply chain as a cost center – it can be a competitive advantage, if you start to remove some of the siloes between your solutions.” [06.18] The biggest impacts on the transportation industry right now, and why the industry is more complex than ever before. “It's a whirlwind! We have a lot of different things coming into play. Macro economic shifts, sky high customer expectations, pressure to hit sustainability targets… Depending on the industry, the days of just managing your transportation are gone.” [09.17] Why Transportation Management Systems often come with their own set of problems, and the biggest TMS challenges Manhattan see with their customers. “Whatever challenge comes up, sometimes that challenge isn't the biggest problem. The problem is how inflexible either your systems or operations are. If they're inflexible, you don't have options.” “The burden of maintaining integrations between all of these systems takes a lot of time. We find that teams are spending more time managing their systems and TMS than managing their freight. And that can be a red flag wherever you have volatility.” “As things change, your pendulum swings between ‘I really need to save money' to ‘I really need to give service to customers'… But there is an answer between speed and cost, and we need to be able to react to that.” [12.58] What connectivity and integration speed and ease looks like with Manhattan's Active TMS, and the impact on key focus areas like visibility, collaboration and flexibility. “Transportation is a team sport… And that connectivity is the heartbeat of agility.” “If you're going to do any software implementation, decide: ‘What are my key KPIs, how do I know what's right, how do I build that confidence?' So that when I turn that switch on, I'm getting those benefits – not just creating more questions.” [16.57] Manual versus automated testing, how automated testing works with Manhattan, and the business benefits of continuous validation and accelerated deployments. [19.37] How automated testing can help to reduce risk and allow businesses to make informed, data-driven decisions in a climate filled with risk and unexpected disruption. [23.34] The importance of communication and transparency, the power of partnership, and how customer-driven enhancements make Manhattan's Active Transportation Management unique. “True innovation can't happen in isolation, it happens through partnership.” “It really comes down to the end user experience. If that's bad, it doesn't matter how good your integration is, or how great your reporting is, or how fast you can change. If people don't like using the product, you're going to have trouble.” [27.29] Why scalability means more than just scaling up or down, and how continuous innovation helps businesses with future-proofing, allowing them to stay ahead of the game without having to constantly overhaul systems. [32.24] What Manhattan's synchronization of operations and end-to-end unification mean for teams and businesses. [35.59] A case study exploring how Manhattan helped a grocery client shift their mindset, unify, embrace dynamic planning and unlock big benefits. [40.08] What we can expect from Manhattan in the second half of 2025.
