This episode is packed with goodies as we get down to it with our guest Estefana Johnson who shocked me when i asked her to describe herself. She noted that she was "Just a Person" and didn't read off a list of her many accomplishments. We talked about how you should live as your authentic self and never mask and be your real self. Later we got into how Estefana is leading the launch of Critical Memory Integration (CMI™), a groundbreaking therapeutic model that dares to ask: What if talk therapy isn't enough?Estefana Johnson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and experienced trauma therapist with over two decades of experience in mental health. She began her career in 2001 as a Behavioral Health Technician, briefly stepping away in 2005 to teach in Japan. Her diverse background spans multiple roles and settings, including residential treatment for at-risk youth and medical social work. CMI is turning heads in the mental health world by challenging the long-held belief that trauma can simply be desensitized or cognitively reframed. Instead, it dives beneath the surface, helping clients uncover and rewrite the unconscious survival strategies still dictating their lives long after the trauma has passed. She is currently a Dosing Session Monitor at Lighthouse Psychiatry and TMS in Gilbert, Arizona, contributing both to clinical care and research trials exploring the therapeutic use of psychedelics.Real Plus - Before the Show Bob has more detail and how to proceed with the Real Plus OTR Community site. Wykład dr hab. n. med.Jacka Staszewskiego, prof. Sen i regeneracja – to najlepszy naturalny „hack”. Podczas snu konsolidujemy pamięć i oczyszczamy mózg z toksyn. Sztuczna inteligencja w połączeniu z obrazowaniem mózgu daje coraz lepsze narzędzia do diagnozy i personalizowanej terapii. Jacek Staszewski, prof. 35-Minute Yoga Nidra For Grief Grief can be present from so many different experiences. The most obvious being the loss of a loved one. Yet, grief can also be present when a relationship or a friendship ends, it can appear from the loss of a job or when you've moved out of a phase of life. The tendency that we often have is to dismiss or quickly move out of grief, yet this complex state of emotions ranging from sadness to guilt to anger is a powerful and important journey that must be felt and moved through with compassion, grace, understanding and patience. My hope is that this practice will help you feel safe so that you may remain present and grounded in your grief, thereby feeling it without fear or impatience. For it's only when grief is felt and honored that it can move through and out of the body. Here on this channel you can find many other yoga nidra offerings from me. Thank you for listening, I appreciate you. Namaste. www.yourlivewelljourney.com INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/livewelljourney FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/amandalee.intuitive/

Elsa Fouragnan is an Associate Professor and UKRI Future Leader Fellow at the University of Plymouth. We talk mainly about her work on focussed transcranial ultrasound stimulation, a new non-invasive way other stimulating (human) brains, including deep areas that can't be reached with TMS. We also discuss her childhood in French Polynesia, how she started doing research, what it's like seeing a brain during surgery, and much more. This was the first episode I recorded in-person. The audio quality is really good, with the minor exception that I made a really silly error during editing, such that quiet parts are sometimes not entirely audible. What happens when therapy and medication don't work? Treatment-resistant depression can feel like a dead end — but it's not. In this episode, clinical psychologist and ADAA member expert Dr. Jill Emanuele unpacks the nuanced differences between sadness, grief, and major depressive disorder — and why misusing these terms can delay real help. But the conversation doesn't stop there. What happens when traditional treatments for depression don't work? You've probably heard the term treatment-resistant depression, and it may sound terrifying. Dr. Emanuele and host Gabe Howard dig deep into what this label actually means — and spoiler alert: It's more about strategy than severity. You'll also discover lesser known but evidence-backed options that go beyond talk therapy and antidepressants, including: transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) ketamine and esketamine treatments radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO-DBT) electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) without the Hollywood horror spin psychedelic-assisted therapy using psilocybin Key takeaways: the difference between sadness, grief, and clinical depression what treatment resistant actually means a breakdown of advanced, research-backed treatment options why individualization is key to recovery This episode is your roadmap for understanding treatment-resistant depression on a deeper level — and for finding hope when treatment doesn't seem to be working. Whether you're managing this yourself or supporting someone who is, you'll walk away knowing there are more options — and find that labels aren't life sentences. Special thanks to Johnson & Johnson for providing funding for today's episode. Our guest, Jill M. Emanuele, PhD, is Founder and Executive Director of Urban Yin Psychology, PLLC, based in New York City. She is also Secretary and board member for the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). Dr. Emanuele completed her undergraduate studies with degrees in Psychology and Music from the University of Richmond, and her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from George Mason University. Dr. Emanuele has presented at academic medical centers, professional conferences, public and private schools, and community organizations on the topics of mindfulness, adolescent depression and suicide, adolescent self-injury, DBT, and adolescent borderline personality disorder, and co-authored book chapters on some of these important topics. She also provides education through multiple forms of media including television, radio, internet, and podcasts. Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. Gabe is also the host of the "Inside Bipolar" podcast with Dr. Nicole Washington. Gabe makes his home in the suburbs of Columbus, Ohio. Despite decades of therapy and pharmaceutical use, most patients with major depressive disorder fail to achieve full relief. In part three of our series, Harvard-trained psychiatrist and nutrition specialist Dr. Georgia Ede shares why lifestyle interventions are actually some of the most powerful tools we have for fighting treatment resistant depression.Drawing on years of clinical practice and pioneering work in metabolic psychiatry, Dr. Ede explains how metabolic health, sleep, exercise, circadian rhythm, and nutrition directly influence brain energy. She also breaks down why nutrition (especially carbohydrate restriction and ketogenic diets) hold unique promise for restoring brain function, even in people who haven't responded to conventional treatments like medication and therapy. This conversation covers:How treatment-resistant depression is tied to brain metabolismThe role of exercise intensity in improving symptomsHow sleep and circadian rhythm shape brain healthHow nutrition is the #1 lever for changeClinicians, researchers, and individuals navigating depression: this conversation is a powerful reminder that patients have more power than they've been led to believe and deserve to know the full spectrum of tools available to them. Lifestyle interventions shouldn't be “secondary”—they're foundational. Check out Metabolic Mind's model for metabolic psychiatry to learn more.

We're joined by Hongi Ngo, who developed a revolutionary technique for manipulating sleep oscillations during his PhD. Closed-loop Auditory Stimulation (CLAS), which uses bursts of pink noise which are carefully timed to a particular phase of an existing brain oscillation to either boost or dampen the target oscillation. It has been used to selectively strengthen or weaken memories, improve the immune response, reduce epileptic seizures, and even potentially to slow down age related cognitive decline.Hongi tells us how he got got the idea for CLAS, explains how it works, and tells us about some of his existing studies. He talks about combining CLAS with Targeted Memory Reactivation (TMR) and discusses the ideas for future of brain modulation methods with techniques such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Some of the key papers discussed are:Auditory closed-loop stimulation of the sleep slow oscillation enhances memory (2013)Auditory closed-loop stimulation of EEG slow oscillations strengthens sleep and signs of its immune-supportive function (2017)Thalamic spindles promote memory formation during sleep thrugh triple phase-locking of cortical, thalamic and hippocampal rhythms (2017)Examining the optimal timing for closed-loop auditory stimulation of slow-wave sleep in young and older adults (2019)Auditory stimulation during sleep suppresses spike activity in benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (2021)Shaping overnight consolidation via slow-oscillation closed-loop targeted memory reactivation (2022)Check out our NaPS website to find out more about the podcast, our research and events.
