Former England men's spinner and current England men's U19s Head Coach, Michael Yardy, tells Stumped the future of English cricket is in good hands as his side prepare to face their Indian counterparts in a two-match Test series. He also gives us his take on India's 14-year-old batting sensation, Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who's been the standout player for the tourists so far. And, we debate whether South Africa's stand-in captain Wiann Mulder did the right thing declaring himself just 33 runs short of Brian Lara's record for the highest individual score in a Test innings.Photo: Richa Ghosh and Jemimah Rodrigues of India celebrate hitting the winning runs following the 4th Women's Vitality IT20 match between England and India at Emirates Old Trafford on July 09, 2025 in Manchester, England. She's won and been nominated for several Laurence Olivier awards for her work on stage and she's even directed opera. Now starring in a new film adaptation of Deborah Levy's novel, Hot Milk, Fiona plays Rose, who goes to Almería, Spain with her daughter, Sofia, played by the brilliant Emma Mackey, to try to find a cure for Rose's mysterious paralysis at an experimental clinic. Fiona joins Nuala McGovern live in the studio to discuss it.The Scottish Parliament is looking for opinions on a proposed bill which would change the laws on prostitution in the country. It targets those who buy sexual services by creating a new criminal offence of paying for a sexual act. If passed, it would criminalise those buying sex, while decriminalising those selling it. The woman behind the bill, MSP Ash Regan, speaks to Woman's Hour about why she wants the change, and responds to criticisms that it could make sex work less safe. Today government ministers have launched a review of UK parental leave and pay to reset the system and speaking yesterday the Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said people were scared of having children because of the high costs and she wanted “more young people to have children, if they so choose”. But getting to become a parent can sometimes require ongoing fertility treatment meaning time away from work. And Fertility Matters at Work are calling for those undergoing this support to have the legal right to take time off for their appointments. They've published a report on it and the author Becky Kearns joins Nuala. She's the co-founder and CEO of Fertility Matters at Work. A new production of Eugene O'Neill's A Moon for the Misbegotten, starring Ruth Wilson, is on at the Almeida theatre in London. Nuala is joined by multi award-winning director Rebecca Frecknall to discuss the central character Josie, and why the father-daughter relationship at the heart of the play spoke to her. Women's cricket in England has been through trials and tribulations recently. In this episode of the PowettPlay Podcast, hosts Jordan Shannon and West Indies cricketer Kieran Powell break down the 3rd T20 between West Indies and Ireland, where the West Indies cruised to a dominant 61-run victory. The duo reflect on the key talking points including Shai Hope opening the batting, something Kieran has long called for. While the performance was clinical, the match had all the hallmarks of a final game of a tour, raising some deeper questions. In a bold moment, Kieran poses the thought-provoking question: Do players still care about representing the West Indies? Or is international cricket becoming more of a shop window for franchise opportunities? Jordan believes it's not just a Windies Indies thing but also insists the pride of wearing your countries colours still holds weight a debate that transitions naturally into the thrilling World Test Championship clash between South Africa and Australia. The Proteas' win was more than just a victory on the field; Kieran believes it was a significant moment for the future of Test cricket, especially amid rising talk of a two-tier Test system. The All Sport Breakfast
D'Arcy Waldegrave: Test cricket is increasingly becoming a side show

The All Sport Breakfast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 13, 2025 3:03 Transcription Available

The World Test Championship final is heading for quite the finish. As we sit, South Africa needs 69 runs to get their hands on the Mace, still the coolest trophy in sport. This means the game will actually get to day 4, a triumph in itself after the first two days where wickets tumbled with T20-like regularity, the game devolving into a war of attrition. It's as if the players didn't want to be there, and it's easy enough to understand why. In the brave new world of T20 franchise baboonery —the money-soaked technicolour chimpanzees' tea party circus masquerading as cricket— test cricket is increasingly becoming a side show, a curious look back to the days where patience was a virtue. Although most players will run with the line that it is a true test and the pinnacle of the sport, this archaic 5-day concept is growing more and more difficult to justify. Hard core cricket fans will never turn their backs on the glory of the old school, so the long game will always have its place. But as the years tick by, the nature of the diminished human attention span, coupled with the financial and calendar-based stresses of keeping 5-day exchanges afloat, the game will slowly fade. The new generation of cricketers, with the avalanche of money and lack of hugely demanding physical and mental exertion T20 offers, could hardly be blamed for focusing their talents anywhere but the shortest form. The WTC, although a laudable concept, still needs to work to hold the attention of fans. A pertinent first move would be to base the final in the top qualifier's backyard. The detached energy of the bemused Lords spectators suggests that they're there because they're members, there for the experience, not because the care about the final result. As a lover of the long game, I hope that the WTC will remain and as time passes, the ICC will develop the series to bring the best of the exchanges to the fore. But with the demands placed on a time poor populace, the obscene money available to the players for little or no effort, and the wholly insignificant nature of the results of franchise T20 exchanges, hope might be all us old fellas have. From the bowling front, Kieran praises Akeal Hosein for opening the bowling during the powerplay, highlighting that this mirrors his franchise cricket success and is quickly becoming his specialist role. This launches a wider discussion on the CPL (Caribbean Premier League), and how vital it is for player roles in the West Indies T20 team to be reflected and reinforced in franchise cricket. The Lucknow Super Giants splashed a massive amount of cash on Rishabh Pant in the Indian Premier League 2025 mega-auction. But things went horribly wrong for both Pant and his franchise this season. LSG failed to make it to the playoffs, and Pant endured a historic low in the competition.Questions were raised about Pant's ability as a T20 batter and as a leader of the side. In the latest episode of the Sledging Room podcast, Akshay Ramesh, Saurabh Kumar, and Kingshuk Kusari discuss what went wrong with the Lucknow-based franchise and their captain. They also delve into the fortunes of the Delhi Capitals — Pant's former side — who failed to qualify for the playoffs despite starting the tournament in riveting fashion.Delhi amassed a strong squad this season but suffered an incredible collapse in the second half. Constant changes in their batting order and the failure of their spinners in the final few matches overshadowed individual brilliance from the likes of KL Rahul and Tristan Stubbs. Delhi were also hurt by the failure of their management, who were unable to provide the squad with the right replacements when needed. Here's a recap of the near misses from this season of the tournament, with a special focus on the future of LSG captain Rishabh Pant.Produced by Prateek LidhooSound mix by Suraj Singh

In any case, he enjoys working far too much to give it up, but reluctantly agrees to talk about Lilian's proposal later.During the cricket innings break Hannah chastises her ‘Elite' team-mates for batting so poorly and can't understand why Chris and Adam aren't taking it more seriously. Jolene however is loving how well her ‘Underdog' team performed in the field. Alice joins Justin and Lilian on the boundary edge, apologising for not being more receptive yesterday to Lilian's idea of leaving Ambridge. She now thinks Lilian should go ahead and do whatever is best for her and Justin. Once Alice has gone though, Justin makes it clear to Lilian he's still not keen. The cricket ends in defeat for Hannah's team, with everybody repairing to The Bull for drinks and a T20 photograph. Chris and Alice tentatively agree to spend more family time together with Martha, and Alice says she'll accompany Adam to keep an eye on Helen when she goes for her date at Grey Gables on Wednesday.

Zainab wonders when it'll be over – at least Fallon's pies were delicious. Natasha sympathises with Tom over the loss. Henry isn't impressed with his play. He can barely hit the ball. He doesn't think he'll go in for the T20 next week. Encouraging Tony offers to give him some tips. Natasha's concerned over Henry hiding his phone earlier. Tom begins the conversation awkwardly and Henry soon works out Natasha's spoken to him. He assures Tom he wasn't looking at anything inappropriate, repeating that he was just checking the weather.

In this episode of the show, Binksy, Jamie and Stu look back at week 6 of IPL 2025, which saw the top 7 sides break away, Vaibhav Suryavanshi score a 35-ball century, Mumbai demolish Rajasthan, KKR win a final-ball thriller, Punjab secure a crucial two points against LSG, England name their first Test squad of the summer, and plenty more! We start this week by talking about Sunday's double-header, which saw KKR seal a nervy 1-run victory against RR to keep their slim playoff hopes alive, and Punjab Kings take a big step towards the semi-finals with an impressive victory against LSG. We spend a long time discussing Vaibhav Suryavanshi's cover drive, as well as the skill and quality of Arshdeep Singh as the battle for the Top 4 heats up. From there, we move to Stu's claim that this tournament is tracking towards a Mumbai Indians v Gujarat Titans final. Ryan Rickelton joined Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav in the runs this week, while Trent Boult continues to take wickets alongside Jasprit Bumrah. For GT, it's the top 3 of Shubman Gill, Sai Sudharsan and Jos Buttler who continue to shine alongside their balanced bowling attack led by Prasidh Krishna. We discuss how IPL form could lead to Test opportunities, and whether the upcoming match between these two sides could be a preview of the big dance. One side who haven't been flying high in 2025 is Sunrisers Hyderabad, and despite their tiniest of tiny chances of sneaking into the playoffs, we decide it is time to bite the bullet and discuss what went wrong this season. The short answer is everything, but without Baldy there to defend him somehow the conversation turns to whether Pat Cummins is a marquee player in T20 cricket and how SRH could look to improve their bowling attack in 2026. We round out the show by talking some Test cricket, thanks to England naming their first squad of the summer to take on Zimbabwe in a one-off fixture. The boys evaluate the squad, noting Ben Stokes on the comeback trail, an injury to Jordan Cox, a potential debut for Sam Cook, Shoaib Bashir's inclusion and what bearing any of it could have for an exciting summer to come. A groundbreaking new partnership for New Zealand Cricket, in an effort to keep the country's top players from joining other global T20 franchises. New Zealand Cricket have joined forces with the financial backers of a new franchise in North America's Major League Cricket - a competition that has a value of at least $200 million. The move could help keep leading players and coaches in the Black Caps set-up, instead of becoming global T20 freelancers. CEO Scott Weenink told Mike Hosking they're taking a two-pronged approach. He says this presents an opportunity to diversify their revenue streams into the most lucrative global sporting market, while also creating opportunities for their high performance staff and players. The new team —which is yet to be formally named or have their location confirmed— will debut in the 2027 season. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
