Percy Fender Memorabilia Auction: Online now here: https://auctions.bhandl.co.uk/lots?term=percy%20fender&categoryCode=SME Live Auction to be held Dec 5th at 10am. Address details below At Guerilla Cricket, we are huge fans of Percy George Herbert Fender. He has a starring role in our theme tune after all. Often presented as a divisive, comical, Bertie Wooster, monocle wearing figure (he never did wear one, but his wife did), he was in fact the polar opposite. Sharp, witty, principled, forward thinking, a master tactician and someone who fought for inclusivity and fairness. Perhaps he did more to reinvent cricket than any other person of his age. A renaissance man (he wrote musicals and books), and, it now turns out, was an impeccable archivist of his own life. This year Percy's son Peter sadly died, but from that has emerged a treasure trove of papers, memorabilia and photos that Percy had assembled and Peter had lovingly kept. Much of it goes to auction on December 5th but before it does, we've had access and sight into the contents and with it an insight into Percy Fender's world, including a remarkable series of never heard before recordings that Percy made in the 1960's for his son Peter and for posterity. They chart his life, his career, most of it with Surrey, his feelings, and perhaps, most telling of all, his role in Bodyline, the 1932 Test series in which cricket went to war. Amongst some amazing memorabilia in the auction is an extraordinary letter the Percy typed towards the end of his life where he tells “the truth about Bodyline”. The auction takes place at 10.00 am on December 5th at BHL St. Edmund's Court, Okehampton Street, Exeter, EX4 1DU. It will also be live here and select “Sporting equipment and memorabilia. Listen here as Tony Bishop is joined by Dan Norcross, Jon Surtees from Surrey and most importantly, Percy's two grandsons, Guy and Nick as we learn more about the remarkable Percy and unearth his truth about Bodyline. Today I am joined by the 'voice of the British summer' in BBC Test Match Specials 'Dan Norcross'. He's had a beyond fascinating life; from being suspended at Cambridge University to; playing pub quiz machines for a living for two years, benefiting from the internet boom, setting up the infamous test match sofa (a no hold barred - drunken / ranty rival to TMS) only to get in a legal battle with the BBC, who in a weird twist of fate ended up being his eventual employers to help him achieve his dream!
Antiques Roadtrip superfan, Dan Norcross is joined by auctioneer and star of several antiquing TV shows, Charlie Ross. Charlie gives Dan his top tips for Roadtrip success and tells an anecdote with an unlikely hero, Piers Morgan.
Tim Key joins Dan Norcross in the TMS commentary box. The comedian, actor, screenwriter and poet talks about trying to be creative during the pandemic, his work with Steve Coogan and, of course, his love for the game of cricket - inculding his memories of the 2005 Ashes series.
Annie, Dan and Sam are back (well, they never really went away - they just stopped podcasting for a bit) and ready for another season of the County Championship. Naturally then, it is snowing. Double Dan for the big preview too; Dan Norcross. He of TMS (both versions) fame. Wonderful to be joined by such a brilliant orator of the game.
On day four of the first Test between West Indies and England the English fought back to score a mountain of runs. After picking up early the ninth wicket early the England batters really got stuck in and piled the pressure on West Indies. Zak Crawley was particularly impressive as he smashed a century in quick time. Advantage England. On this episode of The Cricket Podcast we are joined by Dan Norcross. Max and Ross are joined by TMS radio presenter Dan Norcross to preview the upcoming England vs India five-match test series. India's squad troubles are unlikely to stop the juggernaut of talent smashing into an England side missing their talisman Ben Stokes. We go through each of the squads, ask why Jadeja isn't as popular as he should be, ruminate whether Kohli will finally hit another test century and if England have any chance of winning this series. We also discuss the Hundred's appeal to the existing cricketing audience and its new-found sports fans, is it really the beginning of the end for county cricket or is it time for the English domestic game to evolve? Jonathan Agnew presents a review of the third day of the 3rd test between England and Pakistan. Joe Root's side forced the follow on in Southampton after bowling out Pakistan for 273, despite the efforts of visiting captain Azhar Ali who scored an unbeaten 141. England could have dismissed the tourists earlier had they not dropped three catches in the space of 10 James Anderson deliveries. Anderson ultimately finished with figures of 5-56 and is now just two shy of 600 Test wickets. Aggers is joined by Michael Vaughan and Azhar Mahmood to discuss the action, while Dan Norcross speaks to Ali and the England spinner Dom Bess. On the anniversary of Brian Johnston's final TMS broadcast, we look at the connection between Brian, his former colleague and fellow TMS legend John Arlott, and the south coast.
Jonathan Agnew presents from Old Trafford where England endured a frustrating first day in the 1st Test against Pakistan. Rain interruptions and some excellent batting from Babar Azam allowed the tourists to finish the day on 139-2. Azhar Mahmood tells Aggers why he thinks it's been a good day for Pakistan while Michael Vaughan asks whether Azam could have a similar impact on this series as Steve Smith did in the 2019 Ashes. Dan Norcross gets reaction from England head coach Chris Silverwood and Pakistan opener Shan Masood and, with a new biography about the late Bob Willis being released this week, Aggers speaks to his widow Lauren and brother David about Headingley 81, Bob's style of punditry and his love of Bob Dylan.
