This week is a deep dive into 3 things I've learned from doing 250 episodes of DREAM THINK DO. These keys might seem counterintuitive. They are: 1.) Embrace Comparison, 2.) Be a Novice and 3.) March Through the Mess. We'll dig into what each of them mean… the stories and strategies (and science too) behind them… AND how they can help us make 2020 our best year yet! Also, I want to say THANK YOU for being with my on this DREAM THINK DO journey. Whether this is your first DTD episode or your 250th… I'm so glad we're in this together! Listen To The Podcast: RESOURCES: Episodes Mitch Mentions: BRING YOUR AWESOME! with Neil Pasricha. - Episode 247 Beating the Comparison Trap - Episode 183 Overcoming Comparison with Good Morning America's Sara Haines - Episode 32 The Four Tenents for Yoga and for Life with James Miller - Episode 248 PTG - Post Traumatic Growth - Episode 172 More Info on the episode: In this episode, we talk through 3 key things I've learned from doing 250 episodes of DREAM THINK DO. MAJOR THEMES: Embrace Comparison Become a Novice March through the Mess EMBRACE COMPARISON: Obviously, a comparison is something we have to be VERY careful with. Great thinkers have warned us about it since the dawn of time: [Tweet "“Comparison is the thief of joy.” - Theodore Rosevelt"] [Tweet "“Never compare your beginning to someone else's middle. Comparison is poison.” - Jon Acuff"] [Tweet "“Personality begins where comparison leaves off. Be unique. Be memorable. Be confident. Be proud.” - Shannon Alder"] So you might wonder why I would ever say… “Embrace Comparison.” But this idea was sparked when I interviewed Neil Pasricha - for DTD Episode 247 - “Bring Your awesome!” He had 6 best selling books and two of those books have spent 100 weeks on the NYT bestseller list! Amazing. Before I hit “record” for our interview, we got to talk for a bit. As we were chatting I congratulated him about the success of his books and I asked him what it felt like to have an NYT Best Selling book. Without skipping a beat, he said, “Do you know what happens the minute you get an NYT best selling book?” I said, “What?” He said, “You start to see all the people who have TWO NYT best selling books, and you start to feel pressure to get your second!” We wound up talking about how he shakes that feeling off… and just keeps doing his thing. BUT he confessed that's something he really had to watch out for. That was a powerful moment and I really appreciated his transparency. It's something I NEVER have to deal with… ha! Just kidding… of course. In fact, we dove into this subject in depth in episode 183. For me, negative comparison can creep up… as I interview people who have done amazing things!!! Especially if those achievements involve things I aspire to do too! I can feel it sneaking up and it threatens to steal the job of having a great conversation with an awesome person. So I need to look to evolutionary psychology for a little awareness… so I can keep things healthy. As you probably know… “evolutionary psychology” is the theoretical approach in the social and natural sciences that examines psychological structure from a modern evolutionary perspective. It seeks to identify which human psychological traits might actually be evolved adaptations - that is, the functional products of natural selection or sexual selection. In this episode, we'll talk about “Upward” and “Downward” comparison and how to stay on the helpful side of going “tribal!” One of the best ways I can do that is by asking questions like: How can I be learning from this person? What are they doing that I want to do? How can I be helping this person? These simple but powerful questions help to direct my thinking towards healthy comparison and help me to be fully present and enjoy connecting with ...
Are you one of the many people mesmerized by beautiful lettering? Even if art and design aren’t your thing, you’ve probably seen Instagram photos or Facebook posts that feature amazing, stylistic handwriting, and you may have wondered, “How do they DO that?” Today’s show is about two people who have turned their passion for lettering into a business that teaches even the most skeptical letterer how to create something beautiful with basic markers and paper. Colin Tierney is the Chief Execraytive Officer and the guy behind Crayligraphy. He runs Tierney Studio, an independent design company specializing in lettering, calligraphy, illustration, and branding. Colin has worked with clients from all over the world, and his work has been published in several books, featured on the web, and recognized and awarded around the globe. Veronica Ruiz is an Educraytor and lettering artist based in Denver, CO. Drawing letters has been her passion since she was first exposed to the wonder of typography in her graphic design classes at the University of Central Florida. Veronica loves sharing everything she’s learned in her lettering journey with others through her Instagram and blog. How Crayligraphy began You are probably wondering, “What is Crayligraphy?” Colin explains it simply as “the art of stylistically writing with a marker.” You don’t have to look far to find it, feel its hypnotic power, and realize its popularity. From a blog that he started about 10 years ago to document his progress in learning hand lettering and calligraphy, he progressed to Instagram posts, tutorials, and workshops that feature what he calls, “Crazy Crayola Calligraphy”---”Crayligraphy.” The feedback he received led to requests to teach others his craft, so he started teaching and doing workshops. Now he has a website and a huge demand from people who want to learn from him, so there are Crayligraphy workshops all over the country, along with his trained team of “Crayligraphers,” like Veronica who hosts workshops in their cities. TWEET: Crayligraphy is the art of stylistically writing with a marker.” @crayligraphy #chasingdreams The creative community If you’ve ever undertaken a creative endeavor, then you know the hesitancy most people feel in sharing their work. Colin and Veronica say that this is an important step in your journey because everyone starts out at the beginning. This community as supportive and focused on helping people improve. Crayligraphy supplies are affordable, and anyone can learn to do it well----with practice. Never be ashamed to let others see your work! TWEET: “ Never be ashamed to let others see your work!” @crayligraphy #chasingdreams Next on the agenda What’s up next for Crayligraphy? The plan is to keep holding workshops all over the country but to expand to online courses to open the accessibility to everyone around the world. Colin and Veronica see Crayligraphy expanding into other creative endeavors also, with a book and their own special markers coming in the not-too-distant future! They emphasize that anyone can learn this art form with consistent practice of a mere 20 minutes/day, and an art and design background is NOT required! Cornell Thomas is a speaker, author, and founder of the Positivity Summit movement. He is also the first repeat guest on the show! He was featured in Episode 59 to talk about the Positivity Summit, which was scheduled for last September. Things changed though, and Cornell had to make a pivot move, refocus, and forge ahead. Sometimes that’s exactly what dream-chasers must do. When we change direction, we don’t always take the time to evaluate and reflect, but that is what we are doing today. TWEET: Ep. 76: “Sometimes that #BAD thing can be the #BEST thing”. @CornellThomas Moving forward with peace of mind We’ve all experienced a time when the best-laid plans just don’t work out. Sometimes there are factors beyond our control. The question is: How do you respond? Do you crumble and cry or do you move with the flow, make the needed adjustments, and move forward? Cornell tells us why the September dates for the Positivity Summit just would not work. Everything happens for a reason, and the resulting newly-designed Summit is going to be better than ever! The Positivity Summit is March 10-11, in Allamuchy, NJ. Cornell explains how he determined to make the Positivity Summit in March happen in a bigger, better way—even to the point of incurring the out-of-pocket expenses that were required. He gives a glimpse into the panel of the Summit’s amazing speakers, teachers, authors, entrepreneurs, coaches, and PR/branding experts. Hear the story of how Cornell’s perseverance led to an Olympic athlete being secured as a speaker. Cornell can certainly tell us a thing or two about that! He tells the inspiring story of his connection to Tony Robbins, and how Tony came to write an endorsement for one of his books. It didn’t happen by chance, but by the strength and determination that comes from never giving up on your dreams. Cornell tells us the lesson he’s learned about the immense kindness from a small act, and the impact that comes from pouring into people. The battle scars that come from the struggle to be relentless will only make you stronger and ready to fight for MORE! Dr. Kyla McMullen earned her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC), where she was also a Meyerhoff Scholar. She earned her Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan (2007-2012). While earning her Ph.D. she was also a faculty member at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. At Wayne State University she taught computer literacy courses to over 2,000 students. Professor McMullen is the first underrepresented woman to earn a Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Michigan. She is currently a tenure-track faculty member at the University of Florida’s Computer & Information Sciences & Engineering Department. Dr. McMullen has a personal commitment to encouraging women and minorities to pursue careers in computing and other STEM fields. She is the author of "Beautiful, Black, and Brainy" and "Brilliant is the New Black" which showcase hundreds of exceptional young African Americans who excel in STEM fields and don't fit the typical "scientist" stereotype. TWEET: Ep. 64: Kyla McMullen - Don’t Tell Me “If” Because I’ll Just #Work Twice as #Hard When they said, “IF I graduate” that just made me work harder. When Kyla McMullen began her graduate school work in Michigan she was told by an advisor that the workload would be extremely demanding. And there was one other thing. She would be the first African-American woman to graduate with a Ph.D. So when her advisor said, “If you graduate, you’ll be the first,” she took it as a personal challenge. The “IF” nature of the statement made it sound like there was a question as to whether she could do it - and that’s the moment she determined that she would. If you take the time to listen to this episode you’ll get a taste of Kayla’s optimistic and can-do attitude that has propelled her to achieve her Ph.D. and even go beyond. A crazy couple of blog articles that got Kyla lots of attention. As Kyla McMullen has been working hard to build her career she’s spent a good deal of energy toward the promotion of African-American people in the sciences. Her desire is to see more and more people of color both discover and utilize their brilliance by becoming scientists. Two articles she wrote in her efforts to draw attention to the work done by black scientists blew up the internet with thousands of shares. They are “Beautiful, Black, and Brainy” an article that highlights black women in science and “Brilliant Is The New Black,” which highlights black men in the scientific community. You can hear why Kyla decided to write those articles as well as learn about the incredible impact they have had, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. TWEET: A #crazy couple of #blog articles that got Kyla lots of #attention Why perseverance beats smarts every time. You don’t have to be the most intelligent person in the room to have the highest levels of success. You just have to know how to work harder than anybody else. That’s what Kayla McMullen believes and what she’s proven with her success in the computer science field. She believes that anyone can accomplish anything if they are willing to work at it. On this episode of Chasing Dreams, you’ll hear Kyla’s story and get to hear her explain why she doesn’t think it’s her smarts that got her by, but rather her work ethic. Never measure your own success based on someone else’s success. When Aimee asked Kyla McMullen for one recommendation or piece of advice for all those people who are chasing their own dreams, Kyla said that every person needs to be careful that they don’t measure their success by somebody else’s. In other words, you are unique, so don’t compare yourself in ways that make you feel that you’re failing. Your level of expertise or accomplishment will probably look very different than the people who have gone before you so don’t be afraid to try new things on the road to success. Only you can be you, so go be the gift to the world that you are.
