The Book Leads – Episode 26: Cornell Thomas& Oh, The Places You'll Go! For this episode, Cornell, an international speaker and multi-title author, walks me through what this book means to him. It's funny that he and I both shared the same reaction when the book was first introduced to us as impactful – to Cornell by one of his students years back and to me a few weeks ago when Cornell mentioned he wanted to cover it in this episode: Wait, what did this guy just say? But it all make sense. There's big heart, great positivity, intentional impact, and an endless work ethic in Cornell's story. He's out to change the world in his own way, on his own terms, in his own skin, telling his own story. No one else's. Now having learned his story, it makes sense that he's the creator of the Positivity Summit. And his story has been crafted through up's and downs, trials and tribulations, matching the journey in the book. One theme covered here, similar to that of other episodes, is how much we're indoctrinated with a life of curriculum in our schooling, to get us ready for the work we'll be asked to do by our employers, but we're not empowered with the true lessons to prepare for what life really is – a journey of trial-and-error. This book does just that. It's a jumping off point, a foundation, to that discussion. Some highlights from this episode: Legacy. We don't have a lot of time on this rock. Check out this amazing interview with my good friend Cornell Thomas, we went deep when it comes to best kept secret for Entrepreneurs. Here is a quick bio of Cornell: Cornell is a former basketball player and coach originally from Passaic New Jersey. Cornell received a contract to play professional basketball in Portugal, when just a week before departure he ruptured his Achilles tendon. Little did he know at the time that the pain he suffered from not being able to achieve his childhood dream would lead him directly to finding his purpose. Cornell became the head men's basketball coach at Sussex County Community College at the age of just 26 years old. Having no prior coaching experience Cornell received a crash course in leadership, team dynamics, and culture. Determined to coach at the Division 1 level, Cornell left SCCC after 6 seasons to become an assistant at national basketball powerhouse Blair Academy. It was at Blair that Cornell got the unique opportunity to learn from some of the best basketball coaches (and leaders) in the country. From NCAA champions to NBA head coaches, Cornell immersed himself in all things leadership and team. After about 4 seasons at Blair Academy Cornell felt a shift. He started writing his own inspirational quotes, which eventually led to him writing a blog called the Power Of Positivity. After the blogs success Cornell decided to write a book under the same name. It was then that Cornell said to himself that he wanted to share his story with the world. With no mentorship, or speaker training Cornell embarked on his current journey 9 years ago. The amazing Dr. Jason Brooks shared the importance of being dedicated to finding your purpose and its transformative power on our lives. Cornell Thomas is a speaker, author, coach and creator of the “Positivity Summit,” designed to help unite human beings, regardless of race, religion, political preference, or socioeconomic status. This is a huge milestone for Do a Day – the 100th episode! Rather than doing a retrospective or solo episode, I wanted to bring in people from past episodes who have continued to be part of my life and continued to have an impact on how I think about things on a daily basis.   With that intention, I am SO honored to get to bring my friends Cornell Thomas and Michael O'Brien back on the show. We use the term "friends" loosely often, but these are two men I would genuinely consider friends for the personal connection we've made, and the impact we've had on each others' lives. I strongly suggest you go back to each of their episodes to hear their brilliance, and learn more about their stories. Cornell was on Episode 41 and Michael was on Episode 62.   Key Points from the Episode with Cornell Thomas & Michael O'Brien: Cornell Thomas joined again after appearing on Episode 41, which you have to listen to. He speaks on mindset, including overcoming adversity and callous the mind to become stronger from the problems we endure growing up. Cornell is also the founder of the Positivity Summit, which is a global series of events to bring together people to talk about how to build and live a positive mindset. Michael O’Brien joins us after being on Episode 62, which was a moving and inspiring conversation. Michael prevents bad moments from turning into a bad day (or longer). As Michael says, where we are now as a planet is a bad moment, to be sure. This is a point where there will be pain and suffering, but also a moment we can come out of stronger if we are willing to learn from it, and decide the way show up in these moments and on the back of them. Both Michael and Cornell have lived through very extreme moments that felt like their lives were over (for Michael, that took a literal meaning on top of the figurative one). This gives them perspective on what we face today, where lives are at risk for many, but how we live our lives is impacted for everyone. Michael said we are allowed to have two thoughts in our head, positive and negative. Cornell went deeper on this. You can have the moment thinking, “this is it, everything is ruined.” And you can have the thought of, “I can come out of this, regardless of the struggle.” The key is recognize the choice here rather than curling up and feeling like you can’t do anything. Choice can be tough to exercise, but it is a power we have. Neither Cornell nor Michael had any advanced warning in their stories, which not only shocks and surprises you, but creates a great deal of uncertainty. That uncertainty is a big part of what we are all struggling with now. Uncertainty creates a lot of difficulty, including potential questions of our identity – who are we if we don’t have our job or our role in our family? Michael reminds us we can’t find our true or new identity without taking steps, even small ones. There are positive messages around us right now. The fact that the virus is able to spread means that we all must be so connected and intertwined, which is a fact we can use positively when we’re able to come back together. Cornell reminded us that need to focus on acceptance. We can’t change anything without acceptance. We have been through so much as a people already, so we will get through this. This becomes an opportunity for us to get to things we haven’t done because of how busy we all are. One change can be the tone we have been seeing of late, with the negativity in the political scene globally. Michael brings up how the way we shape this situation defines what will come from it. The way we write this narrative defines the outcome. The idea of getting back to the way things were is something that none of the three of us hopes happens. We need to build something better rather than just going back to what we were. We talked about the butterfly effect of every moment and choice in our lives, even the seemingly tough ones. Cornell would not have his family or the impact he has today if he hadn’t gotten injured and had gone to Europe to play professional basketball. Michael has no regrets about what he has experienced, including his accident. He’s gotten to a place where he loves every scar on his body because of what he’s built as a result of them. Michael used the idea of Japanese Kintsuge pottery, which is made from joining up broken pieces using gold or other precious metals, and the new creation is far more beautiful than the original thing that had to be broken for the new version to exist. This is moment for creativity, where Cornell reminds us that thinking outside the box from a place of empathy for what people are going through can lead to new ideas that move us forward. If you have been through something before, you can either use it to build your shield or let those things crack it. But Cornell raises that we have been through all of these things before, or we wouldn’t be here, so we should recognize that we can do it. Michael asks a great reminder question for us all – share a time when you’ve faced something really hard and got through it. How did you do that? What lessons can we take from that today? There is a risk that the socio-economic divide we’ve already had will deepen if we don’t take specific action to address it. Cornell talked about the moments to find purpose, which ties to his life-long pain of not understanding why he didn’t have a dad (who died when he was just a toddler), and it did not become clear to him until he became a dad himself. We have to have faith and understand that as long as we have breath in our bodies, we can change our situation. Michael shared three ideas that can help especially in a moment like this with the challenges we face right now: When you feel the stress percolating, focus on your breath to slow everything down. Everything in our life is neutral until we label them, as Michael learned during his recovery from his accident. Nothing has meaning until we give it meaning, and we tend to be quick to do that with labels like good or bad. Through gratitude, we can see what we still have and can still do rather than just seeing what we have lost. We all have a daily responsibility to see good in the world, and these can be the building blocks for something much bigger. We can all do even little things to make people’s lives better, like letting someone merge in front of us, getting groceries for our neighbor, or whatever else we can do to help someone. Cornell Thomas, author of Extraordinary, was raised on the adage that everything happens for a reason. His mom taught him through her example that in difficult times, you look for a solution, you don’t quit. He joins Kevin Monroe to talk about finding his purpose and living an extraordinary life. In Finding Your Purpose, Even Baby Steps Are Steps We’ve all had moments where we think we discovered our purpose in life. Cornell says that happened twice before he found his true purpose. He shares how his purpose changed from basketball player to coach, then to writer. Purpose is a journey, not a destination, Kevin says. Cornell agrees that it’s a journey because it’s never-ending. A destination means that you get there at some point, so it becomes a race to the finish line. There’s no finish line to what I do, he says, because my purpose is evolving every single day. The reason so many people don’t discover their purpose is because they either get discouraged or they think there’s nothing else they could do. There’s always another step, Cornell emphasizes. You have to fight for your purpose. Kevin adds that you just have to take one step, then another, and don’t quit. Even baby steps are steps, says Cornell.  You Are Extraordinary You are extraordinary because there’s no one else like you or ever will be. So how can you not treat yourself as priceless? The difference between extraordinary and ordinary is that extra that you put in. What you do determines if your legacy becomes special. He asks listeners, who are the top three people who have influenced you in your life? Who would name you in their top three? If you’ve made someone’s top three, you’ve made a lasting impact on their life. That impact will last long after you’re gone, and they in turn may pass it on to their children. That’s legacy for Cornell. Legacy is not changing the world by yourself. Who’s Your Mahalia? We’ve bought into a fantasy that one person by themselves changes the world, Kevin comments. The reality is that no one does it alone. The sooner you figure out who your people are, the bigger the impact you will make together with them. He relates how it was Mahalia Jackson’s prompting Martin Luther King, Jr to tell the crowd about the dream, that led to his greatest speech. Who’s your Mahalia? Who is the person who sees your dream and helps you articulate it in a way you’ve never done before? Getting Through Adversity Kevin asks, what’s one thing that awakens an ordinary person to believe that life can be extraordinary? Cornell answers that for him, it has been adversity. After you’ve been through a difficult experience, you often ask yourself how you got through it. It awakens you and inspires you to make a change. If you’re in the middle of adversity, he advises you not to go it alone. Use your support network. First, ask yourself, Is this life or death? Then, what do I immediately have to start doing to slowly change my mindset? The third question to ask yourself is, Who can I bring along with me to hold me accountable for these action steps? There are going to be storms in life, Cornell says. But they are transitory and you can get through it. One week before accomplishing his dream of playing professional basketball, he suffered a career ending injury. And rather than stay in, “Why me?” mode, he turned his attention to, “What now?,” instead. Today Cornell is a global speaker, multiple title author, mindset coach, corporate trainer, and social entrepreneur. And you know what else he is? He is funny, endearing and passionate about fostering a positive mindset to overcome adversity. I absolutely adore him and I know you will too. Who is Cornell Thomas? That’s a question that even he wasn’t quite sure about until 2011. He is a former athlete, a speaker, an author, a thinker, an activist, but more importantly than any of those titles, he is a husband and father. Cornell Thomas is the youngest son of Bobby and Tina Thomas. That sentence is very important in regards to who he is, as you will hear in the show. If not for his parents, he wouldn’t be the man you see today. His father passed away when he was just three years old, and although his time with his dad was brief, he learned through others the amazing legacy that his father left behind, as a police officer and community leader. His father's passing forced his mom to become he and his siblings' everything. She was their main provider, mother, and life educator. She was forced to become an expert problem solver, and that skill was passed down to her children. Cornell's mom raised her children on the old adage, "Everything happens for a reason,” and that one lesson out of the myriads she has taught him was never forgotten. It’s what he remembered when he suffered a career-ending basketball injury, and the first thing he thinks about when any adversity comes along. In that dark times, his mom’s teachings served as his light. It was that 'bounce-back-ability' ingrained in him since his youth that has allowed him to find his purpose through the pain. What Brought Cornell to The Do a Day Podcast? That’s the question most people spend their whole lives trying to answer. He thought his purpose in life was to play professional basketball. In 2003, he received a contract to play professional basketball in Portugal. A dream he had since discovering the sport at 16. Two weeks before he was supposed to leave, he suffered a career-ending injury that reshaped his life, as he gets into in this episode. He was sickened by all of the negativity he was seeing online, and decided to start writing his own motivational quotes for his personal Facebook page. The quotes eventually led him to writing a blog, and the blog led to his first book The Power Of Positivity-Controlling Where The Ball Bounces. In 2011, he realized what his true purpose is – to inspire and motivate others. He's been fortunate enough to speak all over the world sharing his story with people from all walks of life. Daring others to say, "What Now?" instead of, "Why Me?" in the face of adversity. Key Points from the Episode with Cornell Thomas: Cornell’s lost his father to cancer when he was just three years old, leaving his mother with five young kids to raise on her own. That set Cornell up to see what it means to never quit as his mother always pushed through no matter how hard things got. In his teens, Cornell found basketball and fell in love (despite being totally uncoordinated). He learned how to play thanks to a short, Asian man named Ray. That taught Cornell you never judge a book by its color (let alone its cover). He made basketball his life, practicing constantly, including skipping the senior prom. Cornell had a dream of playing in the NBA, but he did not fully believe in himself yet. But his mother did, and kept pushing him to go for his true dream. After many years of intense practice, Cornell finally found his skills while in college and became a solid player earning accolades. The only reason he got there was sacrifice. He sacrificed other things for what he loved (basketball). But what he really loved was the idea that his mother wouldn’t have to work again because he was successful enough for let her retire. He stayed so focused on that, which is why he got to where he needed to skill-wise. He earned a scholarship to play for North Dakota, and was now playing with NBA-bound college players. His dream was taking shape as he finished school as he got an email from his agent that he had gotten a contract to play professionally in Portugal. He went home to tell his mother that it was really happening. A week before leaving, he played a half-court game casually with friends, and heard a pop. His Achille’s tendon had ruptured, and he needed surgery. After surgery, as his contract to play in Portugal had just been voided, his first real memory was his mother kissing him goodbye as she went to one of the three jobs he told her she’d never have to work again. He went into big Why Me mode, and his mother called him out. She told him to get out of Why Me mode and get into What Now mode. That’s how she had been living since his father died, so she knew it better than anyone. When you find yourself in these moments, focusing on what happened is not going to help you move forward. You have to look at what’s next rather than dwelling in what already happened that you can’t change. He worked through his recovery, and was at about 90% when he went to a training camp where he left one night to go back to the hotel just as some guys came in with guns and shot at participants including killing one of them. This was a sign to him that he wasn’t supposed to be doing this. Cornell soon was asked to coach a junior college team, which was the next sign. As a 26-year-old player, becoming a coach was almost throwing in the towel so he fought it. It took his mother telling him to go to the interview anyway for him to at least give it a chance. He ended up taking the job, and fell in love with coaching. As he became a father, it kept building, culminating in writing a book and finding his voice as a speaker. One thing he realized is that all the hours, skills and discipline he put into basketball can be translated to other parts of his life. As a coach, he realized that he has to love his players no matter what. That means not holding them to the standard he holds himself to since that’s about him, his life and his goals. His brother reminded him that if the players don’t think you love them, they won’t play for you the way you want them to. We are kicking off Black History month 2018 with a special friend of mine, Zemirah Scott. She is a philanthropist, branding marketing analyst, personal trainer, and business owner. She is a former Temple University and Montgomery County Community College student, and her mission is to supply resources and tools for entrepreneurs and small businesses to gain economic stability. Since 2013, she has been the CEO of her marketing branding company, The Difference Development Group, better known as DDG-Philly in the City of Brotherly Love. Zemirah has truly impacted communities around her by her involvement in small business development, speaking at conferences, and mentoring youth. Her desire to give back has allowed her to amplify her knowledge, expertise, and professionalism. Cornell Thomas’ father was a police officer in the city of Passaic, New Jersey. Officer Bobby Thomas passed away when Cornell was only four years old, leaving his mother to raise him and his four siblings by herself. The strength and positive mindset that Cornell’s mom displayed through his childhood helped mold him into the man he is today. Cornell is a speaker, author, basketball coach, and world changer. He is a living example of how a positive mindset can transform your life. Cornell’s “next play” mentality is what helped him triumph over adversity and turn the pain of a career-ending injury into finding his purpose in life. You can learn a lot from Cornell’s experience, so grab a pen and paper to take some notes and listen to this episode. Stop negativity when it’s a snowball. Don’t wait until it’s an avalanche. Cornell Thomas believes that most definitions of positivity nowadays are flat out wrong. The kind of positivity that makes a difference isn’t a feel-good, pollyanna attitude that denies the harsh realities of life. Instead, it’s a belief that negativity is an enemy that has to be killed early in its life cycle. In his words, negativity is like a snowball that picks up speed and eventually becomes an avalanche.
