What does it really take to coach at the very top of the game? And how does a 32-year-old coach find himself leading the journey of one of the fastest-rising players in world tennis? In this episode of Control the Controllables, we sit down with Maxime Tchoutakian, the coach of Vicky Mboko — a 19-year-old who has taken the tennis world by storm, breaking into the Top 10 in less than a year. But Max's story is just as compelling as the player he now coaches.Ranked 530 in the world as a player, he took the US college route at Baylor University, rebuilt his career from scratch after COVID, and walked into the Mouratoglou Academy with no clear coaching plan, only to have one practice with Victoria Azarenka and receive a call from her agent 30 minutes later. What he shares in this episode gives a rare, honest look at what it really means to operate inside the world's best tennis teams. In this episode:What it was actually like telling a former World Number 1 how to improve her game at age 26.The moment Azarenka asked him to become her full-time coach and how scary that felt. Why adaptation is the single most important skill to survive life on the WTA tour. His honest take on whether coaches are paid well enough for what they sacrifice. What makes Victoria Mboko so special and why Max believes she will win multiple Grand Slams. The brutal truth about French tennis: why talented kids keep falling short when it matters most. His biggest coaching regret and why he wishes he'd trusted himself sooner.CONNECT WITH CONTROL THE CONTROLLABLESWebsite: https://www.controlthecontrollables.co.uk/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ctc.podcast/Email us: ctc.podcast@sototennis.comMentioned in this episode:Train Smarter Anywhere: Strength & Conditioning for Tennis Players On the Go

Do you know your legal blind spots? Attorney and former collegiate strength coach Reed Wainwright explores how legal expertise reinforces professional standards in strength and conditioning. Wainwright has been instrumental in developing NSCA resources that help professionals mitigate the inherent risks associated with athletics. He highlights key areas — such as facility safety, equipment management, and emergency preparedness — that help coaches effectively advocate for their athletes and protect their careers. Emphasizing professionalism, Wainwright notes, "the more professional we act, the more professional we're perceived.” He underscores why enhancing public perception is crucial for improving compensation, overcoming stereotypes, and supporting long-term field growth. Wainwright also reflects on how his precise, methodical approach as a strength coach has translated seamlessly into his legal practice. Are you, as a strength and conditioning coach, involved in your institution's emergency action plan? Are you knowledgeable in that area? That's an area that could be a huge liability.” 8:27 “Maybe you do need a alternative licensure to become a teacher to get your foot in the door, but there are institutions that are hiring CSCS strength coaches to come in because they add value.” 17:20
This Teamcast episode is brought to you by Harry Moffitt, MCTI Director for Australia and New Zealand. During the last NFL season, Harry had the opportunity to speak with Will Greenberg, the Buffalo Bills' Head of Performance and Strength and Conditioning (S&C). Will is a wonderful human being and a great friend of the MCTI community. He describes his journey through baseball, his passion for S&C, and the positions he held prior to the Bills, from West Point to Utah State. Will has a human-centered approach to human performance. This refreshing perspective is emerging across the field and counters the approach that can overweight outcomes and treat humans as resources to be deployed for wins, profit, and utilization. Listen to Harry & Will discuss programming now and how it might be decentralized, more multidisciplinary, and less wedded to the scientists in the future. They also cover how science and scientists, though critical to the operator, should always aid a good program, never control it, and the importance of ‘struggle' in the gym, and the concept of flow, although not as something we must conjure up, but rather as something we are always in and must fight to return to consistently. They explore the role (and reemergence) of philosophical conditioning in humans and its implications for performance as Will shares a fantastic story of "The Philosophy Booth".In a tough industry – to insiders, NFL stands for Not For Long – Will provides a uniquely relaxed perspective, with many implications for MCTs.
Teachhoops.com WintheSeason.com On this episode of Coach Unplugged, the hosts delve deep into the non-negotiable role of strength and conditioning in modern basketball, emphasizing its status as a demanding contact sport. Sharing personal injury stories, they underscore the vital need for both off-season foundational work and in-season maintenance, advocating a pyramid approach that transitions from general conditioning to sport-specific training. The discussion highlights crucial elements like targeted strength training—with a special note on preventing knee injuries in female athletes through bodyweight and resistance exercises—alongside the benefits of yoga and mindfulness for enhanced flexibility and mental acuity. Crucially, they stress integrating conditioning seamlessly into practice drills and tailoring workouts to individual player needs, concluding that consistent, well-designed strength programs are paramount for preventing injuries and boosting on-court performance, from powerful lower-body movements for jumping and sprinting to upper-body strength for precise shooting and passing, all while strategically tapering efforts as the season progresses.
