Send us a textWhat if the path to career success and personal fulfillment requires embracing fear rather than avoiding it? Jill Schulman, Marine Corps veteran and author of "The Bravery Effect," reveals a transformative understanding of bravery that challenges conventional wisdom.Forget everything you thought you knew about courage. Schulman defines bravery as "taking voluntary action in the presence of fear toward a worthwhile goal" - a skill anyone can develop with practice. Through compelling insights drawn from military experience and positive psychology research, she illustrates how workplace fears of rejection, failure, and uncertainty create a devastating compound effect when we consistently choose to step back rather than forward. The conversation delves into practical strategies for building your "bravery muscle," including visualization techniques that leverage the fear of regret and tools for navigating difficult conversations with authority figures. Schulman's POISE model (Purpose, Observed behavior, Impact, Seek understanding, Enact plan) provides a framework for speaking truth to power while minimizing potential negative consequences.Perhaps most surprisingly, Schulman reveals how true bravery involves vulnerability - admitting when you need help, actively seeking feedback, and creating what she calls a "brave tribe" around you. The Marine Corps phrase "embrace the suck" encapsulates her central message: discomfort isn't something to avoid but rather the essential ingredient for growth and achievement.Whether you're hesitant to share ideas in meetings, reluctant to pursue a promotion, or struggling to create a team environment where candor thrives, this episode offers evidence-based approaches to transform fear from an obstacle into a catalyst for meaningful change. The latest round of negotiations for a global plastic treaty ended in failure. Speaking to the Eco-Business Podcast, Doug Wooding, managing director of Hong Kong-based nonprofit Ocean Recovery Alliance, said that countries do not need to wait for a treaty, and should enact polluter-pays laws that mandate firms to recover the plastic they put into the market and finance the chronically under-funded circular economy. Tune in as we discuss: What now? INC5.3? Is no treaty better than a watered down treaty? Recycled content mandates versus virgin plastic caps Pressure brands not petrochemical producers Action is possible without a treaty The need for regulatory consistency for plastics What will a realistic treaty look like? KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is “not scared of all types of bombs”. So says former police commander Willem Els, who is now with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) as Senior Training Coordinator in the ENACT organised crime programme. Els tells BizNews that the “bomb” dropped by the General last Sunday took “tremendous courage”. Els, who trained the General in Bomb Disposal, described him as a”disciplined officer, a straight talker, a straight shooter, a straight walking” officer who is doing “the right thing as a policeman in his heart, in his actions…”, stressing: “He's a policeman in heart and down to the bone.” Apart from training the General, Els also worked with him on s number of foreign missions, and the two even had to “hot extract” former President Thabo Mbeki and then Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma from a coup in Haiti. They also worked together in Mozambique “where we lifted arms caches and destroyed huge, huge numbers of arms and munitions”, as well as in Equatorial Guinea in preparation of an African Union Summit. Els warns that it would “hurt” President Cyril Ramaphosa “very much” if he deals with the general's allegations of police-underworld links by using the “old playbook that the ANC (African National Congress) has been using ever since they came to power”. As for threats that black and white citizens could even riot together if the KZN general is not treated right, Els notes there are people who say “we might see a repeat of 2021 if people feel that they're not being listened to…”

New Hampshire has removed the income cap for families applying to its Education Freedom Account program, making it the first state in New England to offer school choice to all K-12 children. Governor Kelly Ayotte signed the program expansion into law on June 10. Previously, first-time applicants had to have incomes below 350% of the federal poverty level to qualify.Total program enrollment will be limited to 10,000 students in the first year of the program's expansion. If more students apply than there are spaces available, the program will prioritize current participants and their siblings, students with special needs, and low-income students.New Hampshire's four-year-old EFA program is one of the most family-empowering school choice laws in the country. EFAs can be used for a wide variety of approved education expenses. Each child's EFA is funded by the state's “per-pupil adequate education grant amount,” plus any additional aid that would have been allocated in a public school (for example, if the student qualified for free- or reduced-price lunch or special-needs funding or was an English-language learner). The state contracts with the nonprofit Children's Scholarship Fund New Hampshire to administer the program.New Hampshire follows Tennessee, Idaho, Wyoming, and Texas in expanding educational opportunities available to their children this year. It's time Oregon gave the same chances to students here, too.

This week parents, educators, and students nationwide are celebrating National School Choice Week, an annual event highlighting education options available to K-12 children today. School choice means empowering parents to choose the educational environments that will best help their children succeed. To really improve academic outcomes in Oregon, families must be able to send their children to schools that meet their learning needs. Here are three ways Oregon leaders can expand educational opportunity during the 2025 Legislative Session, now underway in Salem: Raise the cap on virtual charter school enrollment so successful charter schools can serve more students. Currently, school districts may prevent students from enrolling in virtual charter schools if three percent of the district's students are already enrolled in a virtual charter school sponsored by another district. Expand public school transfer policies so students can attend different public schools with open seats. This would help district schools respond to students' needs and reward those that achieve better outcomes. Enact an Education Savings Account (ESA) program so students choosing to opt in can use their state-level, per-pupil education funds where they learn best. 17 states currently have ESA programs. When parents have choices, students have better opportunities to learn, grow, and reach their potential. Oregon education policies should expand students' options, so all children can have an effective, meaningful, and empowering school experience.

The Texas Legislature is facing pressure to find creative ways to reform the state's toll road system amid a growing chorus of vocal critics, including some Republican state lawmakers. From 2001 to 2021, Texas built more toll road miles than nearly all other states combined, according to the Dallas Morning News ongoing investigation, “Toll Trap.” In other news, Texas Republicans are demanding the Biden administration stop selling unused parts of the border wall that runs along the U.S.-Mexico divide; two malls in Dallas-Fort Worth are ready to help shoppers with a growing technology service: drone deliveries. Stonebriar Centre in Frisco and Hulen Mall in Fort Worth are rolling out deliveries through Wing drone service and DoorDash, the popular app for getting items to your door. Both malls are part of Brookfield Properties, which has shopping centers across the country. Over 50 merchants are available to folks within roughly 4 miles of the malls for deliveries from Wing, which is part of Google's parent company, Alphabet; And more people today may care about the future of downtown Dallas — but sometimes it feels like many of them have a different take on where the heart of the city is. The Portland Tribune recently reported that Oregon elementary students' academic proficiency remains “significantly lower than pre-pandemic levels.” It also noted that while every state “experienced a decrease in average assessment scores,” “compared to every other state, Oregon was third last for improvement in reading test scores….” All children deserve effective educational options that will help them succeed in school. Here are three ways state leaders can help K-12 students get their education back on track when Oregon's 2025 Legislative Session begins in January: Raise the cap on virtual charter school enrollment so successful charter schools can serve more students. School districts may prevent students from enrolling in virtual charter schools if three percent of the district's students are already enrolled in a virtual charter school sponsored by another district. Expand public school transfer policies so students can attend different public schools with open seats. This would create incentives for district schools to respond to students' needs and reward those that achieve better outcomes. Enact an Education Savings Account (ESA) program so students choosing to opt in can use their state-level, per-pupil education funds where they learn best. 17 states currently have ESA programs. To really improve education outcomes in Oregon, we need to make it possible for families to enroll their children in the schools that best meet their academic needs and goals.
