Teen-Turn, a charity dedicated to empowering young women from underserved and underrepresented communities to pursue STEM careers, delivered its spring "Teen-Turn Super Session" at the University of Limerick on Saturday, April 5th. The event brought together over 60 girls from Connacht and Munster for a day of hands-on learning, mentorship, and exploration of university life. Teen-Turn Super Sessions are a key part of Teen-Turn's mission to provide the training and support necessary for girls to make informed decisions about their educational and career paths, particularly in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). With the guidance of industry professionals, university staff, and Teen-Turn alumni, participants engage in intensive, collaborative sessions, upskilling and working on their current after-school program projects and gaining invaluable insights into the world of STEM. This Super Session focused on guiding girls working in teams to code mobile apps that address real-world challenges. The girls also developed accompanying business plans, marketing strategies and pitches, which will be showcased at a Technovation Regional Pitch Event in May. Technovation activities aim to equip girls aged 10-18 with the skills to become tech entrepreneurs and leaders. "We were thrilled University of Limerick was able to host this Super Session event and to introduce the girls to the campus, explore the opportunities within the Computer Science and Immersive Software Engineering departments and meet the incredible staff and students there," said Iseut Mangan, Regional Manager for Teen-Turn. "For some of these girls, this was their first time visiting a university campus and it was an exciting moment that could shape their future educational and career choices. By familiarising themselves with the campus, they can better visualise themselves as university students. The support they receive from mentors is essential in helping them believe in themselves now so as to achieve a STEM career in the future." The Teen-Turn Super Session featured mentors specifically from the Immersive Software Engineering department at UL, who guided the girls through coding exercises, app development, and business plan creation. Additionally, some of Teen-Turn's alumnae, who participated in many Super Sessions during their journey with Teen-Turn and are now first-year students in Immersive Software Engineering at UL and Biomedical Engineering in MTU, joined the event as a peer mentors, sharing their experiences and offering advice to the girls. Teen-Turn's programmes, including after-school activities, Saturday PLUS clubs, and work placements, provide girls with the skills, confidence and resources to navigate the STEM education system and make informed decisions about Leaving Certificate subject choices and third-level course options. Teen-Turn remains with the girls throughout their journey, from Junior Cert to job, offering continued support through college years and into the workforce. By connecting participants with female role models in the industry, Teen-Turn ensures that girls from all backgrounds have access to the tools and inspiration they need to succeed. "We believe that no girl should be limited by her background, home circumstances or geography when it comes to choosing a career in STEM," said Iseult Mangan. "The programmes we offer start at second level and continue with the girls through college and into the workforce. We help break down barriers and create a supportive community where girls can thrive, explore their potential, and set their sights on a future in technology and innovation." This Super Session event underscored Teen-Turn's ongoing commitment to skilling and supporting the next generation of female leaders in STEM.

The MTU Innovation Challenge 2025 has once again demonstrated the transformative power of student-led innovation, as interdisciplinary teams from across the globe came together to tackle real-world challenges posed by local, regional, and international organisations. Over the course of the last eight weeks, 11 teams of students from across Munster Technological University's six campuses in Cork and Kerry collaborated with their peers from Ud'A University in Italy, Murang'a University of Technology in Kenya, the University of Skövde in Sweden, and the University of Crete in Greece. Together, they engaged in solving a diverse range of innovation challenges supported by expert mentoring and training in design thinking and stakeholder engagement. Each team worked closely with real-world organisations to develop creative, practical solutions to problems currently affecting those organisations. The teams were supported by a group of volunteer mentors from across MTU without whom the challenge would not be possible. This year's participating organisations come from a wide variety of sectors, including healthcare, agriculture, assistive technology, AI, and nonprofit services. Challenges ranged from implementing AI solutions for business process automation to designing accessible healthcare devices to improving sustainable farming tools and community engagement platforms. Students tackled projects including the development of an AI-powered supply chain tool for tech firm Aspen Grove, the design of a paediatric syringe driver lockbox for Cork University Hospital, and a reimagined neck support brace for Motor Neurone patients at Marymount Hospice. In the nonprofit and community space, students designed an interactive app for Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind to engage users in a service dog's journey, contributed to a digital portal for clients at the Crann Centre, and explored improvements to solar-powered irrigation systems and data platforms with Kenyan start-up SowPrecise. Carole O'Leary, who spearheads this initiative at MTU, said: "These projects are not hypothetical scenarios, these are real issues facing organisations right now. What's remarkable is how our students rise to meet these complex challenges with such creativity, empathy, and professionalism. The benefits are two-fold: the organisations gain fresh perspectives and potential solutions, while students gain hands-on experience and the confidence to innovate in the real world." To mark their achievements, two standout teams were each awarded a €1,000 prize for their innovative and impactful solutions: Team Marymount 1 and Team SowPrecise 1. All students participating in the challenge received a Digital Badge in recognition of their engagement, collaboration, and contribution. From a stakeholder perspective, the benefits were evident. "The MTU Innovation Challenge has been such a highlight for me this year, and it is so exciting and rewarding to work with the students at MTU," said Orlaith Leo, Leo Senior Physiotherapist at Marymount Hospice. "To put my clinical head together with their creative minds has been so valuable, and they've come up with some brilliant ideas I could never have imagined." Gemma Leo, Business Support and Project Manager at the Crann Centre, shared similar praise: "The apps that we saw were absolutely beautiful - so a massive congratulations to the students. I can totally see that if we can get them built, our clients would use them." The 2025 challenge welcomed the most academically diverse group to date, with participation from both undergraduate and postgraduate students across a wide range of disciplines. These included programmes in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering, Software Development, Computing, Creative Digital Media, Animation and Visual Effects, Business Information Systems, International Business, Marketing, Economics, Data Science and Analytics, Artificial Intelligence, User Experience and Service Design, Electrical and Electronics...

Munster Technological University is inviting experienced professionals to apply for the final places in its elite Cyber Innovate programme. The programme is designed to equip participants with the skills to launch and lead cybersecurity start-ups, strengthening Ireland's position as a cybersecurity innovator. Cyber Innovate is co-funded by the Government of Ireland and the European Union through the ERDF Southern, Eastern & Midland Regional Programme 2021-27. Now in its second year, the programme also aims to address historical diversity imbalances in the cybersecurity sector. In its first year, five out of the 12 successful applicants were women, and the programme organisers are keen to see that trend continue. Ronan Coleman, Director of Cyber Innovate, said: "Most start-up programmes focus on commercialising a pre-existing idea. Cyber Innovate is different. From day one, participants dive into real-world challenges, engaging directly with industry leaders in financial services, technology, telecoms, agriculture, and smart maritime. They work alongside cybersecurity and IT professionals to uncover pressing problems they face, and design practical, high-impact solutions." As part of the programme, successful applicants receive a €38,000 tax-free scholarship, along with fees for a 10-month Postgraduate diploma. Students will be based full-time on site in the Rubicon Centre business incubator at MTU. "The goal of the scholarship is to give students the breathing space to learn and to fully commit to validating the opportunity for a cybersecurity startup," said Sarah O'Donovan, Programme Manager of Cyber Innovate. A key partner for the programme is Georgia Tech VentureLab, which specialises in the lean start-up I-Corps methodology for validating the commercial opportunity for a potential product or service. To date, I-Corps has led to 1,357 start-ups that have since raised a combined $3.16billion in funding. The first year of Cyber Innovate launched in September 2024 and is currently ongoing. Its students, organised into five teams, identified over 450 customer problems or needs, and narrowed that to 38 concepts before shortlisting to one project for each team to focus on. The student teams are currently working on prototypes, business models and business plans with the aim of raising funding for their start-ups this summer. Applications for the 2025/26 programme close on Monday 31 March, and further information is available at https://cyberinnovate.ie/. "The application process is simple: we want to encourage people from a variety of backgrounds to apply, even if they haven't worked in cybersecurity before now," said Ronan Coleman.

eSentire, a leading global Managed Detection and Response (MDR) cybersecurity services provider, has announced that it has awarded the annual "Sean Hennessy Bursary" to Munster Technological University (MTU)computer science student, James Spillane. This year, eSentire is also celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the opening of its international headquarters and Security Operations Centre (SOC) in Cork, Ireland. eSentire established the Sean Hennessy Bursary award in 2021, in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science at MTU, in response to Ireland's growing cybersecurity skills shortage. According to Cyber Ireland's 2024 Security Snapshot Report, the cybersecurity industry employs approximately 8,000 professionals in Ireland, an increase of 8% since 2022. The Sean Hennessy Bursary provides college financial aid, as well as the opportunity to participate in a nine-month internship with eSentire. The scholarship is named in honour of the late Sean Hennessy, a former eSentire team member who was instrumental in establishing and managing eSentire's Global SOC in Cork in 2015. Sean Hennessy passed away in 2016. This is the fourth year that the Sean Hennessy Bursary has been awarded to a MTU student. Impressively, the three previous recipients of the award are all currently employed with eSentire's Global SOC in Cork, Ireland. Each of them has reached various stages of eSentire's Career Development Program, which fosters and supports security analysts' growth through attainment of internal and external certifications, mentoring and progression. "I am delighted and honoured to have been selected as this year's recipient of the Sean Hennessy Bursary," said James Spillane, 2025 eSentire Sean Hennessy Bursary winner. "I would like to sincerely thank everyone at eSentire for this incredible opportunity to further explore the fascinating world of cybersecurity, which is a passion and interest of mine. I am also grateful to MTU for their support and guidance through my studies. Receiving this award is an honour and a fulfilling achievement, I want to thank everyone involved for this prestigious opportunity." eSentire has been protecting organisations from known and unknown cyber threats for 20+ years, providing complete attack surface coverage on premises and in the cloud. With 2000+ customers in 80+ countries, eSentire provides Exposure Management, Managed Detection and Response, and Digital Forensics and Incident Response services designed to build an organisation's cyber resilience and prevent business disruption. eSentire protects the world's most targeted organisations, with 65% of its global base recognised as critical infrastructure, vital to economic health and stability. eSentire operates the largest SOC in the Southwest region of Ireland, and as a global leader in providing award-winning cybersecurity solutions, eSentire has contributed to the broader development of the Cork region and its security analysts are highly trained experts on the frontlines of cybercrime. "The 10-year anniversary of the opening of our Global SOC and headquarters in Cork is an important milestone for us," said Ciaran Luttrell, Vice President of eSentire's Global Security Operations. "We have grown our operations and currently employ over 50 staff members, we have completed over 25 SOC analyst internships, and this is the fourth year of our special bursary program honouring the memory of Sean Hennessy." "Reflecting on our ten years in Cork, we are especially proud to have led the way in contributing to the growth of the cybersecurity community," continued Luttrell. "It is through programs such as the annual bursary, our work as Chapter Leads with Cyber Ireland, the sponsorship of CorkSec, a Cork-based Def Con meetup group; and most recently, our partnership with Cyber Innovate, an incubator program supporting cybersecurity start-up companies, which launched in 2024. A new survey of 500 Irish third-level students conducted by TELUS Digital Ireland reveals that an overwhelming 85% of students plan to remain in Ireland after completing their studies, highlighting a strong commitment to contributing to the country's workforce and economy. The research - conducted for MTU's LGBTQ+ FLAG week sponsored by TELUS Digital - provides key insights into the career aspirations, workplace preferences, and values regarding diversity, inclusion, and social responsibility of students in Ireland. When asked about their ideal workplace, nearly half (45%) of respondents indicated a preference for large multinational corporations. Meanwhile, 24% said they want to work for small to medium enterprises (SMEs), 16% expressed a desire to be self-employed, and 11% said they would like to work in start-ups, the public sector, or government. Commenting on the research findings, Logan Davidson, Global Account Manager, TELUS Digital Ireland, said: "As businesses continue to evolve, it is vital to understand and align with the expectations of new graduates to attract and retain top talent in Ireland's competitive job market. At TELUS Digital, we are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and supportive workplace where everyone feels empowered to be their authentic selves. This commitment extends beyond our offices into the communities we live, work and serve. That's why we're honoured to sponsor MTU's LGBTQ+ FLAG Week, reinforcing our belief that inclusivity is not just a principle we uphold - it's something we actively practice. Through meaningful initiatives and engagement, we strive to create a culture where both our team members and communities can thrive." Diversity and inclusion remain a priority for Irish students entering the workforce, with 73% emphasising mental health awareness and support as the most critical aspect. Additionally, 60% consider gender equality to be a key workplace value, while 44% prioritise disability awareness. Furthermore, when asked about the importance of diversity in senior leadership, 46% stated it was important to them, while 25% considered it slightly important. Sustainability and corporate social responsibility (CSR) also play a crucial role in employment decisions, with 59% of students stating they are more likely to apply to organisations that continuously promote sustainable and responsible business practices. "For me, being part of a diverse workplace means feeling seen and valued for who I truly am," said Mattilie Browne, third-year Software Development student and Chairperson of the MTU LGBT+ Society Cork Campuses, "As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, it's incredibly empowering to know that there are companies out there - like TELUS Digital - that genuinely care about creating inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive. Diversity in the workplace isn't just about representation; it's about fostering an environment of mutual respect, understanding, and support." An increasing number of students expect companies to take a stance on social issues, with 80% agreeing that workplaces should actively address external societal challenges such as racial injustice, inequality, accessibility, and the digital divide. Students remain optimistic yet realistic about their job prospects post-graduation. When asked how long they anticipate securing a job, responses were as follows: 53% expect to find employment within four months. 42% anticipate it will take around eight months. 6% believe it will take up to a year. Since 2007, TELUS Digital and its team members have impacted the lives of more than 1.6 million people across the globe through our volunteer activities and charitable giving, including Community Board donations. TELUS Digital Ireland is the digital CX innovator that designs, builds and delivers next-gen solutions, including AI and content moderation, for global and disruptive brands.

Munster Technological University is pleased to announce the launch of a pioneering PhD research project titled "Exploring the Optimisation of Ireland's Response Rate to the Challenges and Opportunities Afforded to Industry and Enterprise by GenAI". The research is supported by TU Rise and aims to seek to nurture and support innovative enterprises, elevate the global competitiveness of Irish based companies, expand export opportunities and ultimately lead to increased revenues and employment across key industry sectors. The research will be undertaken by Mr. Patrick Shields, MBA, who brings over 20 years of domestic and international Leadership and Management experience in industry. Patrick's research will focus on how businesses can harness GenAI to drive efficiencies and respond effectively to global market demands. With AI set to disrupt traditional business models, informed adoption, responsible usage, and proactive skills development are critical for long-term success. The supervisory team is led by the Principal Investigator and First Supervisor, Dr. Angela Wright School of Business, supported by the Second Supervisor and Head of Department, OPD, School of Business, Dr. Breda O'Dwyer. Industry Mentor Ms Sharon Lehane and AI Mentor Dr Sourabh Bharti bring wide-ranging expertise in AI research, enterprise collaboration, finance, and machine learning, ensuring the project is guided by a robust mix of academic and practical insights. Through close collaboration with industry partners who opt into the research, Mr Shields will co-create best-practice frameworks that businesses can implement. The work aligns with the Irish Government's ambition to have 75% of Irish businesses using AI by 2030 and will address policy needs at both national and EU levels, including the emerging regulations and standards highlighted by the NSAI Standards and Assurance Roadmap for AI. This PhD research has the potential to significantly benefit Irish enterprises by identifying practical solutions to the challenges posed by GenAI, contributing to Ireland's competitiveness and supporting businesses in adopting AI responsibly. It responds to Ireland's National Digital Strategy and ensures that insights will feed back into MTU's wider work in preparing students and industry partners for an AI-driven future. Dr Angela Wright of the Department of Organisation and Professional Development said: "We are delighted to have received this funding to support this PhD work and candidate. The findings of this research will be at the cutting edge of modern business and enterprise and will address the most compelling element to appear on the world's technological stage, namely Generative Artificial Intelligence, and all of the implications that this technology will have on industry." Dr Angela Wright continued, "The expert research team are excited to oversee this research with Patrick, as it will be pertinent, timely and will enable industry to be armed and ready for what lies ahead. Student Inc. has announced the national launch of its 13-week student accelerator summer programme. Backed by a network of 9 Irish universities, an international university, and the Higher Education Authority (HEA), Student Inc. will provide 75 students across Ireland with the opportunity to turn their entrepreneurial ideas into reality in the summer of 2025. The programme, originally developed by Munster Technological University and the Rubicon Centre, offers €4,000 in seed funding, intensive coaching from seasoned entrepreneurs and investors, and a hands-on learning experience. Throughout the summer, students will engage in workshops and mentoring sessions aimed at developing practical innovation skills and navigating the complexities of the business world. For the 2025 iteration there is a specific strand of the programme geared to the creative sector, Creative Student Inc.. This is being spearheaded by IADT Media Cube. Student Inc. has already supported the launch of over 30 student start-ups, including notable ventures like Gasgon Medical, founded by MTU alumnus Vincent Forde. His company has transformed safety in intravenous infusion within hospitals. Through a hybrid delivery model, Student Inc. ensures a broad geographical reach, allowing students to stay at their home universities and campus incubators, surrounded by experienced entrepreneurs while benefiting from world-class mentoring and training online. This approach promotes nationwide participation and connects students from various disciplines with industry leaders, mentors, and like-minded peers. A recent enhancement to the programme includes the integration of Universal Design (UD) principles, providing participants with the tools to incorporate accessibility and inclusivity into product development from the outset. This forward-thinking addition ensures that Student Inc. continues to lead in fostering innovation that benefits all. An external evaluation has awarded Student Inc. an exceptional Net Promoter Score of 85, placing it among the top entrepreneurial programmes worldwide. Carole O'Leary, Student Inc. Programme Manager, stated: "We are thrilled to see the continued growth and success of Student Inc. as the programme gains momentum and delivers even greater impact each year. With 41% of alumni launching businesses after completing the accelerator and an additional 36% planning to start a business in the future, the programme has clearly had a transformative effect. Students consistently emphasize the value of collaborating in multidisciplinary teams and cultivating entrepreneurial mindsets as some of the key benefits of their participation." The upcoming campaign, set to launch in the New Year, will spotlight the success stories of Student Inc. alumni, feature inspiring testimonials, and showcase engaging events aimed at attracting Ireland's next generation of student innovators. Applications for the summer 2025 programme are now open to all students from the partner universities, welcoming applicants from any discipline or year of study. Munster Technological University's Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering hosted the first national PowerGRID2025 conference in the Bishopstown Campus last week. The event attracted 100 registered delegates from a wide range of power industries, technology and energy sectors to explore the challenges and opportunities of an evolving power grid. The high attendance reflects the importance of innovation and digitisation required for Ireland's grid infrastructure upgrade that is essential for the state to meet its energy transition goals. The power grid is undergoing a monumental transformation to meet growing electricity demands while supporting ambitious climate action goals. The goals include: Targeting a 51% reduction in emissions by 2030 through the Climate Action Plan. Increasing Ireland's power system from 75% integration of renewable energy sources will increase this to 95% by 2030. Ensure the modernised power grid must also support a projected increase in Irish electricity demand from 33 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2022 to 56 TWh by 2030 and 80TWh in 2050. To support this growth the electricity grid requires significant upgrades with a growing need for skilled professionals in designing, developing, and operating modern grid systems. MTU, with the support of industrial partners, has heavily invested in its power engineering training facilities, and the first graduate class from the MTU, Springboard Supported Postgraduate Certificate in Smart Sustainable Power Engineering, presented their work at the conference. This upskilling comes at a critical time as the digital technologies in modern grid and substation design require engineers to span both electronic, communication, cybersecurity and electrical engineering domains at a level not previously supported in university programmes. Commenting on the event, Ross Kelly, H&MV, said, "The skills needed to engineer a modern digital substation are so broad that no one person could know it all, so a new role is needed for a system integrator. This person needs to know a little bit about power systems, AC/DC, Battery/UPS, primary and secondary equipment, SCADA, protection schemes, networking, cyber and Level 3 and 4 commissioning.." Applications for the 2025 delivery of this programme are now open at https://springboardcourses.ie/details/13707.
