Have you been looking into boosting your strength training client's results using advanced training techniques and come across lengthened partials as a possible approach to bust out of plateaus? Dr. James Steele returns to the podcast to talk about his latest study that goes into whether it's worth your time or not, and how you might be able to use this information for your strength studio clients. Our conversation goes through what most trainers think versus what the results of the study actually say, and we also go into whether older exercise studies still hold up, if there's more room to improve when you think you've hit your genetic ceiling, and more. If all roads lead to Rome and you want to know which one an exercise scientist would take, then check out this episode. ━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚡ Get Your FREE, No-Nonsense Guide To Growing Your Own Successful Strength Training Business ━━━━━━━━━━━━
I'm honored to talk with JAMES STEELE, of the investigative reporting team, Barlett & Steele. He and DON BARLETT worked together for over 50 years, won journalism's highest awards, wrote nine books. Don Barlett died this past fall. Their 1991 Philadelphia Inquirer series America: What Went Wrong? showed how Wall Street and Washington were squeezing the middle class and fueling income inequality and led to a best-selling book. That was 1991 B.C. Before Clinton. They have been on that beat ever since. We did an episode in 2012 on their Betrayal of the American Dream. Jim and I talk about their partnership, about how we got here, and what it feels like to have your warnings ignored. Learn more: barlettandsteele.com

Bronco update -- previous guest James Steele waited for 2yrs for his 2023 2dr Ford Bronco Sasquatch, and he just traded it in. For what? A 2024 4dr Bronco Raptor of course. We discuss.... Mercedes has been fading in the US luxury sales race, finishing 3rd in 2023 behind BMW and Lexus. In fact, Audi is catching up, which is big news. Mercedes' plan for 2024? Start selling less expensive vehicles and throttle back on the BEVs that their customers seem not to want. Trauma surgeon safety -- our trauma surgeon Dr Stephan Moran gets into regional differences in car crash and fatality rates. Albuquerque is the least safe city. Which is best? Toyota, Stellantis, and Mercedes Benz are investing in Vertical Take Off and Landing (VTOL) companies like Joby. Is that a smart move? CoC says yes. The average price of a new car or light truck in the US in 2023 was $47,000. In this week's episode of the Discover Strength Podcast, I had the pleasure of sitting down with a world-renowned expert on the benefits of resistance training for metabolic health. Dr. Giessing is a professor of Sports Science at the University of Koblenz-Landau. He's also a coauthor on a number of research papers we've discussed on this podcast in the past.Dr. Giessing has worked closely with Dr. James Fisher and Dr. James Steele on a number of different projects. The paper we specifically discuss today is on the effects that resistance training has on metabolic health. For this discussion, we focus specifically on a paper published in 2021, in which Dr. Giessing's group investigated the effects of a resistance training intervention on patients receiving routine care for Type-2 diabetes (T2D). This minimum dose exercise approach was given as an intervention along with a normal standard of care to help patients understand and maximize their own metabolic health. The results of this study, which last over 2 years, and is still having intermediate check-ups are fascinating. It appears that along with dietary interventions and education about T2D, minimum dose resistance training (very similar to what we practice at Discover Strength) was extremely effective in improving overall markers of metabolic health.Dr. Giessing and I discuss important takeaways from this paper, as well as practical implications for those that may already be diabetic, or are on their way to becoming T2D, based on lifestyle and overall metabolic health.I recommend listening and taking notes on this one, as well as sharing it with anyone you may know who is suffering from T2D, or has below-average metabolic health.Check out the paper HERE!Dr. Giessing is also an author and has written one of the best books ever on High Intensity Training. Last December, with Argentina minutes away from a World Cup championship, friend of the show Yoel texted David “congratulations.” David was furious, and soon after (with less than 2 minutes left in extra time) France's Mbappe scored a game-tying goal to send the match into penalty kicks. (Argentina ended up winning or Yoel might have become ‘former friend of the show.') David says he doesn't believe in jinxes at all but his actions suggest otherwise. We talk about a paper on this phenomenon of “half-belief”: when your behavior and your stated beliefs don't align. Plus Tamler and David take a survey and discover that they lead radically different inner lives. James Steele's Tweet Caspi, A., Shmuel, E., & Chajut, E. (2023). We recently visited Dr. James Steele, Dr. “Pak”, and Milo Wolf at Solent University to film some of their research methods and interview them about the innovative, high-quality approaches they take. These guys aren't just any group of muscle nerds though, they are actively working to improve how sports science is conducted, using and promoting the tools of open science. What is open science you ask? Make sure to tune in to learn, as you might be surprised that despite science being the best tool we have to answer life's questions, it has many systemic issues from peer review, to the publishing process, to the reward systems in academia, to the gaps in training that sports scientists often have.

In this week's episode of the Discover Strength Podcast, we are excited to continue with our Exercise Myths and Misconceptions Mini-Series with Dr. James Fisher and Discover Strength CEO, Luke Carlson. We'll discuss another prevalent myth in the fitness industry: the idea that "more is better" when it comes to exercise and results. These two friends and colleagues were kind enough to sit down and discuss, in their own words, some of the most pervasive myths still running rampant in our industry. While there are plenty to choose from, we decided to focus on the myths and misconceptions from our very first podcast ever with Dr. Fisher (HERE).This five-part mini-series will cover some of the most widespread myths and misconceptions and hopefully set the record straight on some of these topics once and for all.Our fifth and final episode focuses on the ideal training frequency for resistance training. We hope to once and for all breakdown and dispel the common notion that "more is better". We'll look at what the research actually has to say regarding frequency. We'll also look at how recovery should factor into your workout frequency, and finally, we'll discuss why the "more is better" archetype simply doesn't apply to proper resistance training.Dr. Fisher has conducted some of the definitive work on ideal exercise frequency. Along with his colleagues, Dr. James Steele, Dr. PAK, and Dr. Brad Schoenfeld (all previous podcast guests), they have collectively or individually published numerous papers on this exact topic of the ideal exercise frequency.Like many things in the fitness industry, we are often led to believe that more is better because it allows fitness influencers and charlatans to sell complicated programs for what need naught be that complicated. The ideal exercise frequency is typically anywhere from 1-3x/week. The key factor is all about the intensity of effort in the individual workout, and how you recover outside of your workouts. We need to consider things like stress, not just from exercise, but from life, and how those things influence your recovery ability. If you want to learn more about proper recovery and how to maximize it, check out our previous episode with NYT-Best Selling Author Christie Aschwanden (HERE).The reality is one to three full-body workouts per week, with a high level of intensity of effort, is more than enough for MOST people. We don't need MORE exercise, we need smarter, harder, more efficient exercise. If you or someone you know is interested in trying a FREE Discover Strength Introductory workout, please send them our way! Our guest James Steele discusses his Bronco's arrival and the long process he endured before it (finally) got to him. Btw - despite the delay, he loves it. Morgan is returning to the US with a $70K wood-framed sports car that looks a lot like a Morgan from 1955. But now it sports a modern 255HP BMW engine and transmission. The guys, ummm, like it. Adams spots a 2019 Nissan GTR, and we agree that after 15 years it still doesn't make much sense. Note to Nissan: put the GTR drivetrain into the Z and an Infiniti sedan or SUV. People would *lap up* an Infiniti facsimile of the BMW M5 or X5M. The guys then talk about their first-ever cars as well as their favorite rides. Finally trauma surgeon Stephan goes into the parts or sections of various interiors that can cause injuries during a crash. Spoiler alert: electronic parking brakes are better than pedal operated ones.
Cutting taxes for the rich over the past 40-plus years has had a huge impact, leaving less money for public programs that benefit millions of Americans while enriching a tiny percentage of the population, reports James Steele. As average people struggle, the wealthy and big businesses benefit.

He's collaborated with a number of our other guests including Dr. Brad Schoenfeld, Dr. James Steele, Dr. Stuart Phillips, and more. This week Dr. Fisher and I discuss the extremely interesting area of research on Dynapenia vs. Sarcopenia. Dynapenia as defined by "PubMed": Dynapenia (pronounced dahy-nuh-pē-nē-a, Greek translation for poverty of strength, power, or force) is the age-associated loss of muscle strength that is not caused by neurologic or muscular diseases. Dynapenia predisposes older adults to an increased risk for functional limitations and mortality.Sarcopenia as defined by "PubMed":Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by progressive and generalized loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength and it is strictly correlated with physical disability, poor quality of life and death. Risk factors for sarcopenia include age, gender and level of physical activity. While our listeners are probably familiar with discussions with their own trainer around Sarcopenia (age related muscle loss). There's reason to think that Dynapenia (age related strength loss), could be a more important indicator of overall health and functionality as we age. We came to our fourth (and probably last) episode of our Volume Month. After interviewing 3 amazing guest, one of my favourite came last! In this one, Dr. Eric Helms is sharing the theoretical as well as practical side of increasing training volume to make better gains. You'll learn why you should probably not get carried away with increasing the number of sets in your program too quickly, and why if you're progressing as an intermediate or advanced lifter, you're probably doing things right, and it's needless to worry about whether you could be progressing even faster. Time-Stamps: 1:10 - Why is training volume important? 3:38 - Is progressive overload or volume driving growth? 6:29 - What's a good starting volume for an intermediate lifter? 12:23 - Discussing the Schoenfeld high volume study (long back and forth) 22:30 - How can we implement these high volume studies in real life? 27:05 - How do we know if we could/should increase our training volume? 30:33 - How much faster will you progress on higher volumes? 34:50 - How much volume does Eric do? 38:05 - How many sets per session do you do? 40:14 - Where can we find your work? nsta: @ssdabel Our blog and courses: https://www.sustainableselfdevelopment.com The SSD Community: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sustainableselfdevelopment Podcast: https://soundcloud.com/abelcsabai Previous episodes of the volume month: Dr. James Steele: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYpAlDtcpLI Mike Israetel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifoX_HJeGA4 Menno Henselmans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hy58UUYomAg
In the 3d episode of our Volume Month edition, Dr. James Steele comes on the podcast to talk about training volume, and how a lot of people might be overlooking factors such as training effort when trying optimize their workouts. After Menno Henselmans and Mike Israetel, I thought I'd bring on someone who represents a different line of thinking about the subject of training volume, and can offer a new perspective on this. Dr. Steele is an associate professor and researcher in the field of exercise science, and is a principle investigator for the not-for-profit organization UKActive. Hope you enjoy the episode! Time-Stamps: 1:27 - What are the main drivers of muscle growth? 5:55 - How important is volume for muscle growth? 10:13 - How to best quantify volume 14:43 - The more volume the better? 21:50 - Effort and its role in muscle growth (volume or effort?) 24:10 - Is HIT training enough to get someone to their genetic potential? 27:25 - Volume and rate of muscle growth 30:10 - Training to failure - how important it is? 38:25 - What's a good starting point for someone with a training protocol? 42:30 - When is it warranted to reduce training volume? 46:10 - Super slow training 53:05 - Conclusions + Where can we found your work? insta: @ssdabel Our blog and courses: www.sustainableselfdevelopment.com The SSD Community: www.facebook.com/groups/sustainableselfdevelopment Podcast: https://soundcloud.com/abelcsabai Dr. Steele can be found at: james.steele@solent.ac.uk UK Active Research Institute https://www.ukactive.com/research-institute/

Early January 2018, I took a flight back to my homeland (UK) to visit the James's over at Southampton Solent University for the most gruelling workout ever, a meat feast and some very engaging and intellectual conversation. Here's the workout routine they put me through: MedX Knee Extension (1 timed-static-contraction maximum force output test following by 3 drop-sets to failure) Z-Bar Bicep Curls (3 drop-sets to failure - on the third set, I had to ask for a bin incase I puked ... ) Chin-up (Single-set-to-failure) Chest press (Single-set-to-failure) Dips (Single-set-to-failure) Chest press (Single-set-to-failure) MedX Lower Back (Single-set-to-failure) This episode is an in-person 3-way podcast. Colin Marshall sits down at the University of Southern California with School of Architecture professor James Steele, author of many books on architecture and architects, including, just over twenty years ago, Los Angeles Architecture: The Contemporary Condition. They discuss the how the city's conflict with "autopia" has gone since then; the obsolescence of not just the freeways, but the city itself; whether Los Angeles has gone from too architecturally crazy to not architecturally crazy enough; the evidence for downtown's non-revival, and what a fatal inertia and incrementalism may have to do with it; the Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything (BANANA) mentality as expressed not just in Los Angeles but the whole of America; how creative individuals can somehow add up to an uncreative city; what the Case Study houses meant to Los Angeles architectural history, and why they failed; whether the "L.A. School" of architects like Frank Gehry, Thom Mayne, and Eric Owen Moss every really cohered into a movement; how current Los Angeles architecture doesn't express the zeitgeist, possibly because the city no longer has one; what he would change in a new edition of Los Angeles Architecture (and how much more grim his assessment would become); the emergence of a dense, connected city within a less dense, less connected one; the most fascinating architectural ideas to come out of USC; what he sees in his students' attitudes toward Los Angeles' built environment; the "excitement combined with confusion" he feels on his increasingly frequent trips to Asia; popular fantasies of changing Los Angeles, like halving distances or vastly increasing its transit; and how we nonetheless feel curious about what lies ahead in the city's future.
Aired 09/16/12 Last week I interviewed longtime reporters Don Barlett and James Steele regarding their new book, THE BETRAYAL OF THE AMERICAN DREAM, looking at the relentless economic, financial, and governmental process over the last 40 years to enrich the largest corporations and richest individuals at the expense of the middle class. This week I'll talk with another wise and experienced Pulitzer prize winner with a long term perspective, HEDRICK SMITH, about his newest book, WHO STOLE THE AMERICAN DREAM? I don't think it's a coincidence nor do I think it's redundant to turn so soon to the same questions being pursued by another savvy journalist. HEDRICK SMITH had already won a Pulitzer by 1973, the year that the post-WWII boom for the middle class began to wane. Real wages for all Americans had risen pretty consistently from the war years, and have done so almost not at all ever since. I point this out to highlight the fact that Smith has witnessed first-hand the rise and long fall of the middle class and brings that experience to this book and this conversation. http://americawhatwentwrong.org/ http://barlettandsteele.com/
