We hear from: Ruth Coker Burks, the inspirational activist who tended to AIDS victims and suffers when nobody else would; It's A Sin creator Russel T Davies, who reveals his shyness surrounding gay sauna's in the 80's ultimately saved his life; and finally, we hear the story of New York couple Frank and Raphael, who share their experiences of living and embracing life with HIV.

On this week's Pop Screen, Graham has a very important and special guest: Mark's dog! And, fine, yes, also Mark, with our favourite quizmaster and Film Stories writer coming back to talk about Russell T Davies's most personal drama. Set across the early years of the AIDS crisis, It's a Sin has a cast full of breakthrough young stars, memorable cameos from acting veterans, plus Olly Alexander, whose day job in Years and Years allows us to cover the show. Not that we need much of an excuse to talk about it, or indeed Davies's day job showrunning Doctor Who for its imminent 60th anniversary specials. There's also space for digressions on Prime Ministerial cameos, the real-life inspirations behind the central characters, an appreciation of Erasure and why Russell T Davies must be hopping mad at Stranger Things right now. The T stands for "Thatcherism has left a legacy of death and division", by the way. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on April 9th 2023 I often feel very lucky that, with such a lot of telly out there in the world to be viewed, VISION ON SOUND has several regular guests who are prepared to watch certain up-to-the-minute programmes so that I don't have to, and I can concentrate on the older stuff, which is where we usually like to lurk in this show. This also means that they can sift through some of the programmes I might otherwise have missed, and tell me whether it's worth me emerging from the library stacks, and taking a look at some of the more recent gems, and seeing some of the possible future classics that television is making right now. This week LISA PARKER really wanted to tell me all about RUSSELL T DAVIES' five-part drama from 2021 called IT'S A SIN which tells the rather important story of a group of friends living under the shadow of the AIDS virus in the 1980s and 1990s. SPOILER ALERT: Be aware that LISA does reveal a lot of the plot of this series and she herself recommends in this chat that, if you haven't yet seen the show in the two years it's been available, you might want to go and watch it now before returning to listen to her overview of it. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Play Episode Listen Later Dec 18, 2022 59:50

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on December 4th 2022 Our old friend SANDY McGREGOR got in touch recently to point out that, amidst all of the ballyhoo and hullaballoo surrounding the centenary of one particular British broadcasting institution, it was easy for shows that talk about television like this one to forget that another television Channel had passed a significant milestone this year. Because, on the very weekend the BBC was proudly marking one hundred years of existence, CHANNEL FOUR also reached an impressive and remarkable anniversary, with this young and once troublesome upstart becoming forty years old. This is actually slightly worrying to me, as I remember dashing home on its very first evening of transmission, just so that I could see what seemed like a paradigm shift in British Broadcasting at the time, and, with apologies to CHANNEL FIVE and all that it does, witness the birth of perhaps the last great national broadcaster, and thereby discovered COUNTDOWN. Those next few years would certainly try to give a brand new perspective on the world to its viewers. Often challenging, sometimes controversial, and sometimes looking as if they were making it up as they go along, CHANNEL FOUR staggered along, often with the derision of the tabloids ringing in its ears, until, very suddenly, it suddenly started to gain a certain amount of respectability and become very much the discerning channel of choice, at least amongst a more youthful demographic. In its early years, and indeed throughout its entire history, this enfant terrible of national terrestrial television channels has challenged the status quo and tried to create a genuine alternative to what's on the other side, and explore the alternative culture in a manner that outlying broadcasters like ourselves can only admire, and we genuinely appreciate the fact that it still does. And, for making much of its back catalogue available, for free, streaming on ALL4, it is still pushing boundaries, which is much appreciated by the likes of us. Programmes like THE WORD, THE TUBE, THE BIG BREAKFAST, VIC REEVES BIG NIGHT OUT, and BIG BROTHER seemed to change our relationship with television itself, and many high profile dramas, which existed for a long time alongside the challenging twenty-one year run of BROOKSIDE, like A VERY BRITISH COUP, GBH, QUEER AS FOLK, THIS IS ENGLAND, NATIONAL TREASURE and IT'S A SIN, have proved that, creatively, this has truly become a channel to be reckoned with. There were also a whole raft of fine comedies; DESMONDS, SMACK THE PONY, FATHER TED, PEEP SHOW, and excellent current affairs programmes like DISPATCHES and the sublime CHANNEL FOUR NEWS still trying in its own way to speak truth to power. Whilst CHANNEL FIVE did come along later on, it never felt quite as significant a moment to me, perhaps because it took a long time to become fully national, but also because television itself had changed since the birth of CHANNEL FOUR, and national free-to-air programming was under threat from the satellite, and later still, the streaming services. These days, unfortunately, certain people amongst the POWERS THAT BE, perhaps some of whom tend to instinctively distrust those alternative or youthful demographics, have CHANNEL FOUR in their sights, and want to change the unique way it operates, despite not appearing to actually understand quite how it operates, and, as ever, when people with power who have vested interests get involved, it doesn't seem as if they intend to change it for the better. Anyway, SANDY quite rightly pointed out that we ought to do a programme about CHANNEL FOUR and put it out before the actual anniversary year was over, so here we are, trawling through another newspaper top forty list, to wish it all the best from all of us here at VISION ON SOUND. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition.

Our latest episode is for all the It's A Sin fans out there. That spectacular show won our hearts and was celebrated by the Literary Salon and almost a thousand of you at a virtual event starring its screenwriter/producer Russell T Davies. So now we're absolutely thrilled to bring you a reading from 'the real life Jill'! Jill Nalder shares her new memoir - Love From the Pink Palace - which tells the true story of her and her friends' lives during the AIDS crisis. Jill juggled a busy West End career while campaigning for AIDS awareness and research, educating herself and caring for the sick. Most of all, she shines a light on those who were stigmatised and shamed, and remembers those brave and beautiful boys who were lost too soon. 'Jill met the crisis head on… She held the hands of so many men. She lost them, and remembered them, and somehow kept going...' - RUSSELL T DAVIES Love From the Pink Palace is published by Headline and available now. If you have just listened to our epic episode with Callum Scott Howells and loved It's A Sin as much as I did, this episode dives into the issues raised in both. Today we are joined by two incredible and inspirational people who have been directly impacted by HIV: Jill Nalder who It's A Sin's character, Jill, is based on and Eugene Lynch who was diagnosed with HIV in 2013 and is now a Senior Positive Voices Coordinator at the Terrence Higgins Trust. In case you haven't watched It's A Sin yet - WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN – the show which is nominated for 11 Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards - explores the lives and loves of group of queer youngsters beginning a new life in 1980s London and soon find themselves struck by the HIV pandemic, ignored by most of the world at the time. Created by the iconic Russel T Davies, the show is now nominated for an incredible 11 awards at the Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards including a nomination for Colin's diagnosis scene - played powerfully by Callum Scott Howells - for the Virgin Media Must See Moment Award. In this episode Jill Nalder who was not only the inspiration for Jill Baxter in the show, the character played by Lydia West (check out Lydia's Reign episode - it's episode four!) but also plays her onscreen mother, reflects on losing a number of close friends in the 1980s who were affected by the HIV pandemic. She also talks powerfully about allyship whilst looking back on her own experience of supporting her friends through this time, taking them tests and visiting them in hospital. Eugene Lynch joins us to talk about his own journey from his diagnosis with HIV to today, the reality of living with HIV today and looks back on the progress we have made with society's approach to HIV and what we can do to eradicate the stigma that still persists. Plus Jill and Eugene talk about the incredible work of the Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK's leading HIV and sexual health charity which offers support, information and advice services for those living with HIV and affected by HIV or poor sexual health. This year marks 40 years since the death of Terry Higgins - one of the first people in the UK to die from an AIDS-related illness - and the formation of the charity in his name. And for 40 years their vision is for a world where people with HIV live healthy lives free from prejudice and discrimination, and good sexual health is a right and reality for all. Both Jill and Eugene share some truly inspirational stories and advice we all need to listen to so I hope their stories strike a chord with you, like they did with me. I hope you love listening to this episode and I also hope you continue to listen and find the power to Reign in your own lives. If you love this episode, please get in touch (follow me across social media @joshsmithhosts), I love hearing from you. Love, Josh xxxP.S. If you have been affected by any of the content raised in this episode, are living with HIV yourself or you know someone that is, please head to The Terrence Higgins Trust. And while It's A Sin centers on a group of gay men in London, Terrence Higgins Trust continues to work with a whole host of different people as HIV can, and does, affect anyone of any age, sexuality, ethnicity or gender. Despite this, 77% of UK adults have never had a HIV test. Routine testing needs to be increased to find people living with undiagnosed HIV in the UK. For more information on testing, for support of for more information visit tht.org.ukP.P.S I can't really believe that this and you will have heard all about it in the podcast but this very special episode of REIGN is brought to you in partnership with Virgin Media – proud sponsors of the British Academy Television Awards. Hold on to your tissues because you might shed happy and sad tears because in today's episode we are joined by the star of It's A Sin, Callum Scott Howells! ***And before we go any further, if you haven't watched It's A Sin yet, be warned there are serious plot spoilers in this episode***It's A Sin - which is nominated for a whopping 11 awards at this year's Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards - is the definition of a game changing show. Created by the iconic, Russel T Davies (the man behind the likes of Queer as Folk, Years & Years and Doctor Who) the show explores the lives and loves of group of queer youngsters beginning a new life in 1980s London and soon find themselves struck by the HIV pandemic, ignored by most of the world at the time. In his Virgin Media BAFTA TV Best Supporting Actor nominated performance, Callum plays the much loved Colin, a young Welsh lad who moves to London to become a tailor and experience queer life for the first time but is eventually devastated by the virus. Colin's diagnosis scene (it makes me cry just thinking about it ANYONE ELSE?!?) which shows him flanked by allies and his mother is also nominated for Virgin Media's Must-See Moment Award at this year's Virgin Media BAFTA TV awards, too. The award celebrates the diversity of British TV, and the moments that got our nation talking, tweeting, laughing, crying and so much more in 2021 and Callum's first ever on screen performance defines exactly that. As we get ready for the Virgin Media BAFTA TV Awards - which you can also tune in and watch on BBC One on 8th May - in today's episode we talk about the mental and emotional impact filming Colin's diagnosis scene had on Callum, the resulting positive impact that It's A Sin had on the way our society views HIV and Callum reflects on growing up in Wales and reveals how High School Musical helped find himself! WE LOVE TO HEAR IT, plus so much more! Callum is just as loveable in real life as he is on screen so I hope you love listening to this episode and I also hope you continue to listen and find the power to Reign in your own lives. Following from December 2021's Resonance 104.4fm show on the cultural impact of the HIV/AIDS pandemic with James Butler and Sarah Schulman, Juliet talks to writer Huw Lemmey about Channel 4's landmark miniseries 'It's a Sin'. Written by Russell T. Davies and broadcast across January and February 2021, 'It's a Sin' follows a group of friends who meet on London's gay scene in September 1981, just as the first British cases are being diagnosed, and charts the impact of HIV/AIDS on their sex lives, relationships, families, friendships and careers over the following decade. In this subscriber-only episode on the miniseries, Juliet and Huw talk about the conservatism of British television and their reluctance to commission it; critical reactions to the show, and call-backs to the 1980s ‘moral panic' about homosexuality; Davies' skill in writing for television; how the programme looks at the personal impact of HIV/AIDS, and its portrayal of LGBT activism and its relationship with wider British politics; and how 'It's a Sin' is ultimately a show about care, and how it represents models of queer (and straight) kinship.
