Lama Zopa Rinpoche highlights the importance of practicing Guru Puja (Lama Chöpa), as it integrates many important practices. He cites Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo, who stated that the Guru Puja practice contains all the importance of the complete sutra and tantra. He also mentioned how His Holiness Song Rinpoche often praised the Lama Tsongkhapa tradition by expressing how Gyalwa Ensapa was different from Milarepa. They both achieved enlightenment in one brief lifetime during a degenerated time, but Gyalwa Ensapa did so while eating delicious food and living a comfortable life. The reason is because his heart practice was Lama Chöpa, which integrates the three deities: Yamantaka, Guhyasamaja, and Chakrasamvara.Lama Zopa says it is a very profound practice that will lead you to achieve enlightenment more quickly. Pabongka Dechen Nyingpo advised that this practice is like one key opening hundreds of doors of the Buddha's teaching. The main meaning of puja is pleasing the guru. It is only by doing so that you can achieve realizations and enlightenment.Lama Zopa urges us to make this important practice heartfelt; it shouldn't become mere words. He details the practice of generating strong bodhicitta, generating the deity, making offerings, blessing the offerings, taking vows, and dedicating the merit. From April 10 to May 10, 2004, Lama Zopa Rinpoche gave extensive teachings during the Mahamudra Retreat at Buddha House in Australia. While the retreat focused on Mahamudra, Rinpoche also taught on a wide range of Lamrim topics. This retreat marked the beginning of a series of month-long retreats in Australia. Subsequent retreats were held in 2011, 2014, and 2018, hosted by the Great Stupa of Universal Compassion in Bendigo.Find out more about Lama Zopa Rinpoche, his teachings and projects at https://fpmt.org/

According to the World Health Organisation, roughly 1 to 2 people die from snakebite in Australia each year. The good news is this is significantly lower than the 1920's when the Sydney Morning Herald reported about 13 people were dying each year.Today we hear from Joyce, who bucks modern statistics which tell us that 74% of victims are male, with an average age of 46, and interestingly, with around 54% of bites happened at home. She's joined by her friend Frances and together, they share the story of what happened when along a spectacular, grade 5 track, over 3 hours from the nearest road, she describes what felt like a sharp stick hit her ankle.Learnings from this episode: First Aid Training (preferably Wilderness (WFA) or Remote First Aid (RAFA) or Remote Area First Responder is essential for you and also those you walk with or meet along the way. How to treat a snake bite - what they did. The importance of carrying more than 1 snake bandage. When calling for help in the bush in coverage, call 000. Anecdotally, Police (rather than Ambulance) may be better equipped to locate you in a remote location (ie. away from roads/tracks/etc.) The incredible benefits of walking with a group where you know the skills and capabilities, rather than strangers (support, first aid, navigation, bushcraft, tasks, team management, etc) Understand that your backpack may not travel in a rescue helicopter. Pack smart. The value of debriefing with your group after a crisis. Taking a moment to take it all in and be gentle on yourselves. Utmost importance of being prepared: packing everything you need. Luke 2:1-7 - "No Room in the Inn"

Mary and Joseph have traveled some eighty miles from Nazareth to Bethlehem to be registered for the Roman census. The journey took at least three days. They finally arrived first at Jerusalem and then would have continued the five or six more miles south to Bethlehem. But when they arrived there, the place was packed. Joseph pushed his way inside the inn to beg and plead for a room for by now the birth of Jesus was imminent.   Some commentators believe that this was an inn which had a long history. It was known as Chimham's Inn (2 Sam. 19:38-40; Jer. 41:17) and was built by that loyal servant of David after he became a member of David's inner circle.   Can you imagine the innkeeper seeing Mary about to have a baby and still telling Joseph that there was "No room!" "We are full. You can see that for yourself. There's not one room vacant." Then, as an afterthought, he said, "But there's the cattle shed. Maybe you could make do there."   "No room!" But that was not really true. Think about it! There was the innkeeper's own room, but he never once considered that. No indeed! Let these peasants with the Nazareth accent make do with the shed. The "cattle shed" of such an Eastern inn was often a cave, which seems to have been the case here.   So, in a rough, cold cave attached to an ancient inn, the Son of God entered into human life. Oxen shook their shaggy heads, and camels looked around with disdain. The floor was unspeakably foul. Bats flew in and out. No hot water, sanitation, or midwife was available. In the nearby inn, paying guests called for food and drink and sang songs or sought their beds.   The awesome Child was born at last. Joseph knocked some boards together to make a manger and lined it with straw, and the wondrous Child slept, wrapped in swaddling clothes. The word Luke used for "swaddling" is one of his medical terms. It means "bandages," so even in the midst of newborn life is a hint of death.   “No room!” No room for Jesus! I hope you get the picture. We read in 2 Corinthians 8:9, “For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich.”  The Creator of the universes comes into this world, robed in human flesh and is born a dirty cave used for the animals of the travelers staying in the inn. The innkeeper or anyone of the travelers probably had the opportunity to give up their room for this precious Baby to be born, but they selfishly denied and rejected this awesome and wonderful privilege!   I love what Oswald Chamber says on his December 25 devotion in Utmost for His Highest: “Jesus Christ was born into this world, not from it. He did not evolve out of history; He came into history from the outside. Jesus Christ is not the best human being, He is a Being Who cannot be accounted for by the human race at all. He is not man becoming God, but God Incarnate, God coming into human flesh, coming into it from outside. His life is the Highest and the Holiest entering in at the Lowliest door. Our Lord's birth was an advent.” “Just as Our Lord came into human history from outside, so He must come into me from outside. Have I allowed my personal human life to become a "Bethlehem" for the Son of God? I cannot enter into the realm of the Kingdom of God unless I am born from above by a birth totally unlike natural birth. "Ye must be born again." This is not a command, it is a foundation fact. The characteristic of the new birth is that I yield myself so completely to God that Christ is formed in me. Immediately Christ is formed in me, His nature begins to work through me.”   Yes, like that dirty cave, our hearts are dirty, sinful, deceitful, and desperately wicked (Jeremiah 17:9), but Jesus is willing to be born into it, cleanse it, and make all the difference in the world for you! Do you have room in your heart today for Jesus?   God bless!

Baseball, Romance, Announcers,  & Music Baseball has to have the right announcers to be truly enjoyed… their excitement, their tone of voice makes the game more exciting right? I see a lot of  great  baseball plays on YouTube. The announcer always adds an extra thrill to the games.   Baseballs being caught at 100 mph bare handed,  acrobatic leaps and catches, painful slides.. The really good announcers describe these amazing plays with such verve, your imagination ALMOST fills in the actual plays… but not quite.  Because really you want the real action .  Even more importantly, the announcers have to know how to describe each play when they are calling plays because millions do just listen to the game rather than watch it .Vince Scully goes down in History as the best announcer because he could paint that picture of each play.   The baseball announcer is absolute key to the enjoyment and thrill of the game. For through the sermons she compiled, Oswald Chambers has been my spiritual mentor for nearly forty years. In this episode of The Living Room, biographer Michelle Ule shares the incredible story behind this classic devotional and Biddy Chambers - the woman who captured her husband's words and shared them with the world. It is an inspiring episode in so many ways! I hope you are challenged like I was to use my giftings for God's glory - no matter the pain and sacrifice that might be involved. Pride Is The Utmost Evil!

Pride Is The Utmost Evil!Jeremiah 9:23-24 “Let not the wise boast of their wisdom or the strong boast of their strength or the rich boast of their riches, but let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness, justice, and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,' declares the Lord.” The definition of pride, according to the Oxford Dictionary, is “a feeling of deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired." Do you see how it says you have a deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one's own achievements? We have no achievements that we have done completely on our own. Everything we have is because God is so good. We owe everything to Him.Yet, we often try to take credit for the things that we do. We congratulate ourselves on a job well done, all the while forgetting to acknowledge the part that the Lord played in our success. God doesn't want us to be unhappy with the things we have done; He just wants us to remember His part in all of it. When we start to take credit for everything we do, we start to think about God less and less. We put ourselves first and Him second, or maybe even further down on the list. This can be dangerous. If we decide we want to do things on our own, God will let us. He is not about to force Himself on us. The reason things go smoothly in life is because God is working all things for our good. He is in the details. He is opening up some doors and windows, and He is closing others. You wonder why that meeting at work went so well. He was there preparing the hearts of the people in the meeting so they were ready to hear what you had to say. What if He hadn't done that, though? What if we were truly on our own?God is behind the scenes so much of the time. Sometimes, we are aware of what God has saved us from; however, sometimes, we have no idea the things He saved us from. Our teacher mentioned in class yesterday that she thinks she probably doesn't praise God enough because she doesn't know all the things He saved her from. She was talking about how joyful and praise-filled the 33 workers were when they were rescued from the mine in Chili back in 2010. They were buried 2 miles underground for 69 days. They truly knew what God had saved them from. They knew their rescue and their survival underground was not their own doing. When we are just going about our everyday lives, we don't realize all the things that God is doing for us, especially if nothing extraordinary is happening. If we have a disease or an illness, we might get to see the Lord working powerfully in that situation. There can be plenty of times when we can see the Lord working in our lives. However, in the good times, in the times when all seems to be working in our favor, these are the times when we can start to fall for the lies of the enemy that are in all of us. When we are killing it at work, we can start to get prideful and think that it is all because we are really great at what we do. When we are killing it as a parent, we can start to think that our children are doing so well because we are such great parents. When things are going great, we tend to take our focus off of God and put it on ourselves. I don't even know if we do it consciously or if it is just an unconscious thing we do. I think it is human nature, almost like our default setting. When things are bad, when we are struggling, and when we need something from God, we turn to Him and ask for help. When we receive the help we asked for, we can see it came from God, and so we find it easier to praise Him and give Him the Glory. However, when we are in a good place, we tend to feel like we don't need God. We feel as though we have it all under control. This is where our pride starts to rear its ugly head again. God is always in control. We always need Him in good times and in bad. It is important to stop and realize that the reason things are going so well is because God is working all things for your good. Yes, you can probably gain some success on your own, but not nearly as much success as you can have if you partner with God. C. S. Lewis said, “According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere flea bites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind…… it is Pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began.” Wow, that is quite the statement. What stood out to me about that statement was that unchastity, anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that are mere flea bites in comparison. Can you imagine? The article I found (CLICK HERE for the article) said that everyone should read the chapter called Pride in C. S. Lewis's book “Mere Christianity.” The author of the article also said that C. S. Lewis was not stating his exaggerated view. Instead, he was summarizing the teachings of all the great Saints through the ages. Why do the great spiritual leaders, Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant alike, unite around this conviction? Because it is so clearly and solidly taught in Scripture. I will post a link for this article in the show notes so you can read how the author shows how this idea is solidly taught in scripture. If pride is the root of all evil, what is the root of all that is good? John Chrysostom once remarked, “For just as pride is the root of all sin, so “humility is the root, mother, nurse, foundation, and bond of all virtue.” Humility is so important. Jesus is the best example to follow for humility. Andrew Murray captures it well, “Christ is the humility of God embodied in human nature; the Eternal Love humbling itself, clothing itself in the garb of meekness and gentleness, to win and serve and save us.”The apostle Paul may well have been thinking of this very scene in the Upper Room when he urged the believers in Philippi: Have this mind among yourselves which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Phil. 2:5–8).Humbling ourselves is not always easy, and we worry that if we humble ourselves, we might miss out on all the world has to offer. However, it says in Matthew 23:12, " Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” We can be free to humble ourselves here on Earth, trusting God will exalt us. That sounds like a much better plan than to exalt ourselves and have to have God humble us. Don't you agree?Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, we ask you to help us be humble. Show us where in our lives we need to grow more in humility. Be gentle with us, Lord. We want to learn. We want to wipe pride out of our lives once and for all. If we are not quite ready for this step Lord, we ask that you work on our hearts and you get them ready. We don't want anything to stand in the way between you and us. We want direct, unobstructed access Lord. We love you so much! We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus's holy name, Amen!Thank you for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. Just a reminder that mentoring is tonight. I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 11th of October, 2023, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Isaiah 26:3-4: “You will keep him in perfect peace, Whose mind is stayed on You, Because he trusts in You.Trust in the Lord forever,For in Yah, the Lord is everlasting strength.”What a beautiful scripture! Then we go to Psalm 18:2:“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”And then lastly, the Book of Hebrews 2:13: “I will put my trust in Him.”Now, I looked up the Oxford Dictionary to find out the literal meaning of the word “Trust,” it said, “Trust is a firm belief in the truth, reliability or ability of someone or something.” Now, come on, who can we trust today? Very few, we can't even trust ourselves, can we? Many years ago, I asked a very dear friend of mine, a lawyer, about legal trust. He said a legal contract is not even worth the weight of the paper it is written on because people can change it and abuse it. I said, “What is utmost trust?” and he told me a phrase in Latin, “uberrima fides”, which means “utmost trust.” So, in other words, if a man comes to you and wants to buy something and you give him a gentleman's agreement, a handshake, assuming that he is a trustworthy, godly man, that handshake is worth more than any piece of paper. Now we come to the crunch, and the crunch is this - there is One who will never leave us, He will never forsake us. He has promised us that. He will stand with us when everybody else runs away. He will keep his agreement with us until death do us part. Who is He? Oh, He is the Carpenter's Son from Nazareth. His name is Jesus, the soon-coming King. Have a wonderful day, Jesus bless you, and goodbye

Anne is a consummate professional. Liked and respected by everyone on both sides of the bar (Plaintiff and Defense), Anne shares her philosophy on how to treat cases and opposing counsel. Her approach is refreshing and leads to better results for her clients all across the board. I have head many cases with Anne and can confirm she practices what she preaches.
