Conas taoi? How are ye? Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast, where we tell Irish myths set to original music. Things are heating up in this episode as we continue to follow Diarmuid and Gráinne in their flight from the Fianna's hounds. We had a long conversation about how to contextualise this story within the Fianna Saga that we've been working on - that's going to be up on Patreon (and on our YouTube Members feed) along with all our post-show chats and reflections! Following their 12-point comeback to draw with Kerry last week, Galway welcome Connacht rivals Roscommon on Saturday (21st February 2026) in Round 4 of the National Football League. The in-form Rossies have beaten Monaghan and Armagh to sit in second place on four points, one ahead of the Tribesmen. Roscommon won the last league clash in Salthill back in 2023. Two years previously, goals from Paul Kelly and Tomo Culhane gave the maroon and white a 2-16 to 1-13 result. Roscommon captain Diarmuid Murtagh acknowledged the year had begun in ideal fashion. == Throw-in at Pearse Stadium on Saturday is 7pm and we'll have LIVE coverage here on Galway Bay FM.
Jeremy Atherton Lin's Deep House (Allen Lane) is an unexpected romantic comedy haunted by centuries of gay ghosts. It's 1996, and Jeremy, a young American, has met the British boy of his dreams – just as, amid a media frenzy, US Congress prepares the Defense of Marriage Act, denying same-sex couples rights including immigration. Via forests and deserts, London fashion shows and East Village hotel rooms, they eventually shack up illicitly among unlikely allies in San Francisco. Combining cultural history with radically intimate memoir, Deep House is a journey through the queer archives and the innermost tale of two boyfriends who made a home in the shadows of a turbulent civil rights battle. Atherton Lin is in conversation with Diarmuid Hester, author of Nothing Ever Just Disappears (Allen Lane). In partnership with bet365 and Gambling.com, this week's #Racehour Podcast is out now! Fresh back from Lapland (and hopefully thawed out), Stephen Cass joins Diarmuid Nolan and Tony Keenan for a proper deep dive into the week in racing. There are 5 Cheltenham ante-post fancies on the table – including a juicy 33/1 poke for the Albert Bartlett – plus chat on Lulamba's Arkle plans, Act Of Innocence, Haiti Couleurs, and why Diarmuid reckons Sam Thomas is on the brink of becoming the UK's top trainer. Tony covers all the Irish angles too, from JP McManus handicap plots to the Charles Byrnes case with the IHRB.
Sam and Diarmuid preview the Fidelity Investments Grand Prix at Wellington tonight. In this episode, we dive into the data behind the first five star of the Wellington 2026 calendar. Historically, winning the Fidelity Investments GP has been a harbinger of a record-breaking year (Kent 2025, 2017, Fuchs 2019). We break down the EquiRatings Prediction Model for tonight's class, forecasting a challenging track with a predicted 10 hitting the Jump Off. Kent Farrington starts as favourite but he will face a challenge from Daniel Bluman and the high-risk, high-reward "wildcard" Richard Vogel. Also, is tonight the night Ben Maher ends a long wait for a GP win?
In this brand-new Masterclass Special, Gary Fox sits down with Diarmuid Corcoran of Chartered Capital to unpack the money questions Irish founders avoid - until it's too late. They talk openly about why money can still feel like a “dirty word” in Ireland, why founders can be brilliant at making money but hesitant to manage it, and how wealth often compounds simply because of maths. Diarmuid breaks down the core principles of long-term investing (without the hype), the psychology that causes people to panic at the wrong time, and the practical founder moves that build real security - like taking a salary, using pensions properly, and keeping “fun investing” firmly contained. If you've ever said “I'll start later,” “I'll wait for the markets to settle,” or “my business is my pension,” this episode is the reset. Important note This episode is education and perspective - not personalised financial advice. Always do your own due diligence and speak to a qualified advisor/accountant for your circumstances. Show notes What you'll learn Why the “rich get richer” is often compounding in action Why Ireland has a unique relationship with money (scarcity mindset + property-first thinking) The hidden risk of “safe” cash: inflation eroding purchasing power Time in the market vs timing the market (and why “waiting” usually backfires) The psychology behind bad money decisions: recency bias, fear headlines, and the Dunning–Kruger effect “Set-and-forget” investing, and why boring usually wins The founder dilemma: all eggs in the business and no personal de-risking plan Pensions: why they can be tax-efficient, protective, and misunderstood The “de-risking” concept approaching retirement (and the 2008 lesson) A simple way to start investing regularly (and remove emotion from the process) The “playpen” rule: keeping speculative investing (stocks/crypto/startups) to a small % Founder mistakes Diarmuid sees constantly: Not taking a salary early Not paying a spouse/partner (where relevant) Being far too cautious in long-term pension funds Missing employer pension matching More about Chartered Capital: Chartered Capital Initial Query Form (https://bit.ly/4a89Mcp) for people who want to get in touch. Activist Lawyer Podcast, host Sarah Henry sits down with Diarmuid Brecknell, solicitor at Phoenix Law, to discuss his pivotal role in securing justice for victims of historical abuse and families affected by the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Diarmuid shares his experience of working on inquests, inquiries, and actions against public authorities, and sheds light on his involvement in some of the most high-profile and sensitive cases in recent years. Tune in to hear about the challenges, triumphs, and the ongoing fight for accountability in some of the most complex legal battles in Ireland. Diarmuid is a Solicitor in the Public Law, Inquests, and Inquiries Department at Phoenix Law. He completed his LLB at Ulster University before graduating from the Institute of Professional Legal Studies at Queen's University Belfast in 2025. Diarmuid specialises in inquests, inquiries and actions against public authorities and is instructed in some of the most high-profile and sensitive cases in the jurisdiction. He also acts in several high-value civil claims arising from the actions of both public bodies and private organisations. Diarmuid has assisted in some of the most contentious and complex legal challenges brought against public authorities in recent years. His experience includes involvement in the landmark Supreme Court case Re McGuigan & McKenna (the “Hooded Men”) and the Court of Appeal decision in Re Barnard (the “Glenanne Series”), which resulted in an order for a fresh investigation into more than 120 murders, Operation Denton. He is also instructed in the significant civil actions flowing from these matters and has played a key role in securing substantial settlements for victims and survivors in claims against the PSNI, MOD, and other state bodies. Diarmuid's extensive inquest and inquiry experience includes appearing in the historic Stardust Fire Inquest in Dublin, one of the largest and most complex inquests ever held in Ireland. Representing families who had campaigned for justice for over four decades, Diarmuid was part of the legal team that ultimately secured unlawful killing verdicts for all 48 victims, a landmark outcome that overturned 40 years of injustice and fundamentally reshaped public understanding of the tragedy. Diarmuid's experience also includes the Ballymurphy Inquest, which examined the deaths of ten civilians killed during the introduction of internment in 1971. After nearly five decades, the Coroner found that all of those who died were entirely innocent of wrongdoing and that their killings were unjustified and unlawful. In addition, Diarmuid has worked on the Hickson Public Inquiry into historic child sexual abuse committed by Bill Kenneally in Waterford from 1970-1990s. Phoenix Law acted for survivors in their pursuit of transparency and accountability from institutions such as An Garda Síochána, Tusla, and the political leadership of the period, all of which had received reports of abuse but failed to intervene, allowing it to continue. Diarmuid is also currently instructed by over 380 victims of Michael Shine, one of the largest and most significant institutional-abuse cases ever brought in the State. He has helped progress the matter from its earliest stages to its current point, where a government-led scoping exercise is now underway to determine the most suitable model for a formal public inquiry. Throughout this process, he has represented survivors before senior public officials, including the Taoiseach, ensuring that their voices and experiences remain at the centre of the emerging investigative framework. Alongside his public law work, Diarmuid continues to act in multiple high-value civil claims and has experience in complex commercial litigation in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. For more on Diarmuid's work, check out: https://www.phoenix-law.org/
Ceannródaí Gaeilge agus céad Uachtarán na hÉireann, tá neart léinn dírithe ar Dhubhghlas de hÍde in imeacht na mblianta. Mar sin féin, is léir nach bhfuil sé éasca teacht ar thuiscint dhomhain phearsanta air mar dhuine. Fear ildánach, iltréitheach agus casta ab ea é; fear a chur cló éagsúil air féin ag brath ar na cúinsí ina raibh sé ag aon am ar leith, agus a choinnigh méid áirithe de féin faoi cheilt go poiblí. Ach, d'fhág Dubhghlas de hÍde na mílte scríbhinn ina dhiaidh – dialanna, litreacha agus saothair chruthaitheacha atá anois ina dtaisce stairiúil do thaighdeoirí. Déanann an clár faisnéise seo a chuid scríbhinní a chíoradh chun léargas nua a fháil ar de hÍde. Mar chuid den chlár, thug an tOllamh Emeritus Liam Mac Mathúna agus an Dr Máire Nic an Bhaird cuairt ar Leabharlann Náisiúnta na hÉireann chun scríbhinní de hÍde a fheiceáil agus a phlé, agus tá léargas freisin ar shaol agus saothar de hÍde ón Dr Cathal Billings agus an Dr Éadaoin Ní Mhuircheartaigh. Le píosaí drámata léite ag an aisteoir mór le rá Diarmuid de Faoite sa chlár freisin, tá de hÍde tugtha chun beatha ar shlí nach bhfuil cloiste againn roimhe. On today's podcast I had the privilege of speaking with Irish actor Diarmuid Noyes, the co-lead of the movie ‘Christy', which has been winning awards in Ireland and abroad and rave reviews from movie critics everywhere. Diarmuid plays the character Shane in the movie brilliantly, as he wrestles with the job of trying to steer his brother Christy on the right path and at the same time, not to derail his own life. Diarmuid talks in detail about the huge preparation that goes into getting a part like this right, the process around the whole movie and the special bond that has grown between the novice actors and the more experienced actors like himself and Emma Willis, who played his wife Stacey in the movie. He has been acting since he was nine years of age, a career shaped in some ways by a crush on Mary Kate Olsen and personal circumstances, and even now he still finds this crazy profession challenging. Diarmuid is extremely humble, finds praise a difficult thing to accept and for some strange reason he gives himself too hard a time. Yes Diarmuid, you are a brilliant actor. Enjoy the show... Christy opens in Irish cinemas on the 29th August, and in Britain from the 5th September. The book I referred to at the end of the podcast is called The Surrender Experiment. An award winning retailer has praised the county's local gift card for its ease of use and commission free nature after enjoying a bumper 6 months of sales through the card. Second generation family run business Moran's Menswear opened its doors in 1970 and celebrates 55 years in business in 2025. The menswear retailer joined the Love Tipperary Gift Card when it launched in November 2024, with over €5,000 of gift cards spent in the store in 6 months. The Love Tipperary Gift Card is backed by County Tipperary Chamber and Tipperary County Council, with 300 businesses accepting the card. Both physical and digital versions of the card are available. Moran's Menswear was founded in 1970, moving to its current shop in Thurles in 2020 before the first lockdown. In the past 5 years, the retailer has tripled the size of the store, added a private wedding room and won the Drapers award for Best Independent Menswear across Ireland and the UK. Diarmuid Moran, owner of Moran's Menswear, said the Love Tipperary Gift Card supports their ethos as a business: "We're proud supporters of the independent sector and the power of shop local. If a person shops with Amazon that money is leaving Ireland but if you buy local it stays local and gets reinvested in the economy through jobs and the support local businesses provide to community projects and clubs. The Love Tipperary Gift Card is all about encouraging people to shop local and providing support for local businesses, so we are very happy to be a part of it. I think it's a great initiative for Tipperary. "One of the main benefits of the Love Tipperary Gift Card is the fact that it's commission free. For example, I had a One4All Gift Card in the store today for €100 and I gave €12 of that to One4All in commission. In comparison, accepting the Love Tipperary Gift Card is 100% commission free. Another major benefit is the ease of use. I can swipe the physical version while the digital version is added to the recipient's digital wallet so they can 'tap to pay'. "We've accepted over €4,000 of Love Tipperary Gift Cards since the initiative launched in November 2024, and I think that is down to the ease of use for merchants accepting the card and recipients spending it. Moran's Menswear is a destination store which caters to a broad market, from 15 years of age upwards, so when people come into the store to spend their Love Tipperary Gift Card they could be buying anything from branded items to wedding attire, shoes to accessories. "It's our aim to make every customer feel welcome, so when they are spending their Love Tipperary Gift Card at Moran's, they're receiving the best individualised service. One thing I've noted is that when customers have the Love Tipperary Gift Card to spend they tend to trade up and spend more on top of the Gift Card value." Diarmuid encourages local organisations to consider using the cards as rewards, and urges businesses who are not currently accepting the card to register: "The Love Tipperary Gift Card is a positive initiative for Tipperary and is ideal for organisations to use as rewards because it is a tangible way they can show support for their community. I'd like to see the Love Tipperary Gift Card becoming even more embedded within the community, and more organisations using the cards for rewards, ringfencing reward spend into County Tipperary. "For local businesses in County Tipperary, it's very simple. If you're not part of the Love Tipperary Gift Card then people are not going to visit your business to spend their cards with you. As a business, you have to keep reinventing and moving forwards, and that includes participating in positive community initiatives that benefit the community like the Love Tipperary Gift Card. €5,000 of additional spend in just over 6 months is a positive for any independent business." Michelle Aylward, Chief Executive at County Tipperary Chamber said: "We introduced the Love Tipperary Gift Card as a means to provide tangible suppor...

We're on the edge of a cliff and the way out is through - through the obfuscations and extractive values and downright lies of predatory capitalism. Through to authenticity, and integrity and finding language for how we can be who we really are, what our souls yearn to be. And that language is not always English. This week's guest, Diarmuid Lyng, speaks Irish - one of the older, indigenous languages of these islands. Listening to him is a genuinely fabulous experience in the truest sense of the word in that it lifts us to the place of myth and fable where our oldest stories are held, and we can reconnect with the bones of who we are so that we can carry our knowing forward into who we could yet be: who we will have to be, I'd say, if we're going to make it through the current pinch point; and who we will love being.Diarmuid is co-owner of Wild Irish Retreats and Nature of Man. He is a former Wexford hurling captain and a host on the Irish Newstalk's flagship sports programme 'Off the Ball'. With Wild Irish Retreats he is part of a team that is focused on the rejuvenation of the Irish language in relation to nature reconnection. With Nature of Man he runs retreats and online programmes with men that creates a space for them to do their own internal spiritual work. He also takes teams/groups of all kinds to the woods for overnight camps that focus on connection; to self, teammate and place. In all of this, Diarmuid is uncovering in people a previously hidden energy source that benefits the individual, the society and the web of life - and he does it with such authenticity, integrity and a really humble sense of what it is to be human in the world at this moment, that I found this whole conversation a genuinely magical exeperience. I hope you do too.
