Perry Mason! This episode is chock full-o SPOILERS, so if you haven't watched S:1 (WTF), then skip this one. We have a Special and a Shorty this week too! Elaine was singing the praises of the original Fred Steiner's Perry Mason theme song from early on. The closer we got to the end of season 1, the more she heard the original theme under the end credit music. In the finale, there was no mistake about it. Steiner's theme was loud and clear under the Terence Blanchard end credits. Blanchard also composed music for a number of Spike Lee movies, including Da 5 Bloods, which we talked about in Episode 11, BlacKKKlansman, and Bamboozled. Check out the original theme f and the end music from the HBO series finale on our page. Steiner also worked on TV shows like Star Trek (TOS), The Twilight Zone (TOS), and Gunsmoke. His film credits include The Night of the Living Dead (1968), Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi , and The Color Purple. Our S;2 predictions:Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys), Della Street (Juliet Rylance), and Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) will definitely be back (since they are all in place!!) and Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham) will be working for Hamilton Burger (Justin Kirk) who will move into the D.A, role. With Ennis is out of the way, Detective Holcomb (Eric Lange) may be back, and he may have it in for Paul Drake. D.A. Maynard Barnes is humiliated and pissed off af, but the last we heard from him, he still intended to run for mayor. So we might see the return of Stephen Root, although I think Travis would prefer he devote his time to Barry, and I hope he keeps showing up in Lincoln Project anti-Trump ads! Listen to this episode to hear us argue about the fate of Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany.)Season 2 may be The Case of the Velvet Claws, the first of the Perry Mason novels by Erle Stanley Gardner and S6: E22 of the original series.

Portrayers of Perry in order of goodness (cut out of the podcast - I was accused of being boring): The peerless Raymond Burr Richardo Cortez - this guy is lively but he lacks the gravitas of Burr. Generally, as an actor he has verve without subtlety. He starred in the original 1931 The Maltese Falcon. Fun to watch how it is different from the classic of the same name shot in 1941, starring the best cast ever assembled. Donald Woods - Bland. Warren William - Warren has the most Perry appearances after Burr. His Perry is most un-Perry-like. His Perry is interchangable with his Philo Vance. William has an old-timey, stagey acting style that I don't like. But you may. Non-Burr Perry Mason films: The Case of the Howling Dog (1934) -Warren William The Case of the Curious Bride (1935) -Warren William FYI: 1st film appearance by Errol Flynn in a bit part! The Case of the Lucky Legs (1935) - Warren WilliamThe Case of the Velvet Claws (1936) - Warren WilliamThe Case of the Black Cat (1936) - Ricardo Cortez The Case of the Stuttering Bishop (1937) - Donald Woods Books:Erle Stanley Gardner: The Case of the Real Perry Mason by Dorothy B. Perry Mason is the longest running lawyer show in American television history. Its original run lasted nine years and its success in both syndication and made-for-television movies confirm its impressive stamina. Mason's fans include lawyers and judges who were influenced by this series to enter their profession. The Mason character was created by mystery writer Erle Stanley Gardner and delivered his first brief in the novel The Case of the Velvet Claws (1933). From 1934 to 1937 Warners produced six films featuring Mason. A radio series also based on Mason ran every weekday afternoon on CBS radio from 1944 to 1955 as a detective/soap opera. When the CBS television series was developed as an evening drama, the radio series was changed from Perry Mason to The Edge of Night and the cast renamed so as not to compete against the television series. This Episode: Case of the Baited Hook from Perry Mason adapted for radio aired December 21, 1957. Robert Dawson confronts Albert Tydings, his partner, about $80K missing from Carol Stanley's trust account.
