In January 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather and his fourteen-year-old girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, launched one of the most terrifying killing sprees in American history. Over eight days across Nebraska and Wyoming, ten people were murdered in shootings, stabbings, and home invasions that blindsided communities and left entire towns sheltering indoors.Their victims ranged from Caril's family to strangers who simply crossed their path. As police scrambled to make sense of the violence, Starkweather embraced the fear he created. Fugate told investigators a very different story, claiming she had been taken hostage and believed her family was still alive. Starkweather supported her version, then reversed himself, pointing the blame back at her.Captured after a high-speed chase in Wyoming, Starkweather was sentenced to death and executed in 1959. Fugate, only fifteen at the time of the crimes, was convicted of murder and served seventeen years before being released. More than sixty years later, questions about her true role have never been fully resolved. Was Caril Ann Fugate a prisoner, a participant, or something in between?Follow True Crime Recaps for more cases that changed the course of American true crime history.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been predominantly in the news for many months. Most recently as both President Trump and the Secretary of Homeland Security have made remarks that FEMA should be abolished. More recently a 20-person council has been established to examine how best the federal response and recovery efforts to disasters should be accomplished. This then is the topic for this podcast.Craig Fugate the podcast guest served as President Barack Obama's FEMA Administrator from May 2009 to January 2017. Previously, he served as Florida Governor Jeb Bush's Emergency Management Director from 2001-2007 and Governor Charlie Crist from 2007-09.Fugate led FEMA through multiple record-breaking disaster years and oversaw the Federal Government's response to major events such as the Joplin and Moore Tornadoes, Hurricane Sandy, Hurricane Matthew, and the 2016 Louisiana flooding.FEMA's effectiveness in dealing with more than 500 Presidentially declared major disasters and emergencies under Fugate's leadership restored the faith of the American people in the Federal Government's ability to respond to disasters.Prior to his tenure at FEMA, Fugate was widely praised for his management, under Governor Jeb Bush, of the devastating effects of the 2004 and 2005 Florida hurricane seasons (Charley, Frances, Ivan, Jeanne, Dennis, Katrina, and Wilma). On January 21, 1958, nineteen-year-old Charles Starkweather changed the course of crime in the United States when he murdered the parents and sister of his fourteen-year-old girlfriend (and possible accomplice), Caril Ann Fugate, in a house on the edge of Lincoln, Nebraska. They then drove to the nearby town of Bennet, where a farmer was robbed and killed. When Starkweather's car broke down, the teenagers who stopped to help were murdered and jammed into a storm cellar. By the time the dust settled, ten innocent people were dead, and the city of Lincoln was in a state of terror. Schools closed. Men with rifles perched on the roofs of their houses. The National Guard patrolled the street. If there is a cultural version of PTSD, the town suffered from it. Starkweather and Fugate's capture and arrest, and the resulting trials about the killing spree, received worldwide coverage. The event would serve as the inspiration for the movie Natural Born Killers and Springsteen's iconic album Nebraska. Today, the story has dropped far from the national consciousness. With new material, new reporting, and new conclusions about the possible guilt or innocence of Fugate, the tale is ripe for an updated and definitive retelling. In Starkweather, bestselling author Harry N. MacLean tells the story of this shocking event and its lasting impact, a crime spree that struck deep into the heart of the heartland.Harry N. MacLean joins Ed Opperman to discuss this book and more.BookWebsiteBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.
I met Matthew Fugate circa summer 2017, when LoCo Think Tank was really starting to become a thing, and Matthew was a fresh-in-town Realtor. I remembered him well for two reasons 1) He was enthusiastic about LoCo Think Tank but could never remember my business name or my name - he'd shout from across the street in Old Town - Hey LoCoNoCo Guy! and 2) He made a big splash with a bus bench purchase, featuring himself in a suit with a suggestive pose, and the message “For a Good Time, Call Matthew Houston Fugate” with the phone number below. He's grown his business and his skills since, and in 2023, he started his own brokerage and property management firm. Gabrielle Judge, I met more recently, in that when I suggested to Matthew that he should share his story on the show - he said “Dude, you gotta have my girlfriend on too - she's like blowing up on tik-tok and Instagram! And indeed - this is so. In less than 2 years, #antiworkgrilboss Gabrielle has over 220K followers on Tik-Tok, over 300K followers on Instagram, a growing Substack following - and a book coming out! Hopefully, her followers will spur new listeners and followers of @thelocoexperiencepodcast! - follow and share today! Despite the clicky-bait hashtag though, this girl is anything but opposed to work - if it's work of the right kind, and honoring to both employer and employee. This conversation gets very real, very early, with Gabrielle and Matthew both sharing their upbringing with alcoholic, abusive, and mentally unstable home environments - and both moved early into their own struggles with substance. In 5th grade, Matthew traded a Pokemon card for a stolen bag of weed, rolled it into joints at 5 bucks per, and began a series of substance abuse peaks and valleys that eventually left him on the streets - until it was time for a change. Matthew came to his new life in Northern Colorado straight out of rehab - and he's been sober and growing his business ever since. Gabrielle's journey is no less dramatic or inspiring - but you'll have to listen to get it - because she's the #antiworkgirlboss and she's here sharing with Matthew and me on The LoCo Experience! On a quiet afternoon in January 1980, veteran park ranger Paul Fugate set out on a routine patrol in Arizona's Chiricahua National Monument, promising to return shortly. He was never seen again. Despite extensive searches, not a single trace of him was found. Was it a tragic accident in the rugged wilderness, or did something more sinister happen? Join us as we revisit the mysterious disappearance of Paul Fugate. We first covered this case back on December 1, 2018. At that time, no other podcasts had covered Paul's case and very few shows were even focusing on wilderness disappearances. Since then, the wilderness disappearances sub-genre has exploded with amazing shows like Park Predators & National Park After Dark. With our 6 year anniversary coming up fast, we thought it would be fun to redo our first episode from the ground up, so we ditched the original show notes and came into the case fresh, with new perspectives on what might have happened. In 1958, 19-year-old Starkweather went on a killing spree that shocked the nation. He took his 14-year-old girlfriend, Caril, with him. The story of that crime spree has become a legend in true crime history, and Starkweather and Fugate have been portrayed as villains on par with Bonnie and Clyde. In this episode, I revisit this case by speaking with best-selling true crime author Harry MacLean. His new book Starkweather: The Untold Story of the Killing Spree That Changed America takes a comprehensive look at this case and comes to some new conclusions about Caril Fugate's guilt or innocence in the murders.
