This episode was originally released on March 3, 2015. Listen to help prep for the next episode of our new season, The Old Man is Still Alive. She was the raven-haired beauty whose lily-white persona was forged by her supporting roles in Gone With the Wind and several Errol Flynn swashbucklers. He was the real-life swashbuckler, the heroic lover/drinker/fighter whose directorial debut The Maltese Falcon, was an enormous success. They met when Huston directed de Havilland in his second film, In This Our Life, and began an affair which would continue, on and off, through the decade, as he joined the Army and made several controversial documentaries exposing dark aspects of the war experience, and as she waged a war of her own, taking Warner Brothers to court to challenge the indentured servitude of the star contract system. De Havilland's lawsuit went all the way to the California Supreme Court, and had massive implications on the future of labor in Hollywood and beyond.  To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Vi dykker dybere ned Robin Hood-filmene 'The Adventures of Robin Hood' (1938), 'Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' (1991), og 'Robin Hood: Men In Tights' (1993) Værter: Tobias Gilbert, Martha Sofie Wallstrøm Hansen, Otto Troels-Smith & Sarah Eline Nygaard

This week, I'm reading the eighth chapter of the Peter David penned movie novelization of the 1991 Rocketeer film.  This chapter introduces us to the Laughing Bandit, the role the villain Neville Sinclair is playing probably inspired by Errol Flynn swashbucklers from the era. There were also some cameos in the novelization (not in the film) with famous actors and films being made at the time Clark Gable (Gone with the Wind), George Reeves (Gone with the Wind, later famous for Superman), Mae West, and Margaret Hamilton (The Wizard of Oz).  There was a part of this scene that always confused me as a kid, since Neville Sinclair ends up stabbing one of his co-stars, Charlie.  I could have sworn as a kid that there was a whole side plot involving Charlie having discovered Neville's German spy moonlighting activities and Neville wanting to get him out of the way  But, to my knowledge, there never was a scene like that, and we actually don't even know about that side of Neville in the movie yet (we do in the novel, though).   I think that scene was just meant to show how self-centered and manipulative Neville could be as well as a plot device for a wedge to be driven between Cliff and Jenny, giving Neville a chance to move on Jenny.  But, the novel gives additional details that highlight his motives.  Turns out other people had similar questions about this scene - see here.  Thanks for listening! ∞∞∞∞∞∞∞∞  Signup for the mailing list for a free special edition podcast, a demo copy of The Thirteenth Hour, and access to retro 80s soundtrack! Please join me in welcoming my friends, Dr. Mary Reid Gaudio and Gino Gaudio, filmmakers and founders of the Tony Gaudio Foundation, who joined us today to discuss the magnificent film they will soon debut about Oscar-winning cinematographer, Gaetano Gaudio, the first Italian-born filmmaker from Italy to win an Academy Award. And his story is fascinating. In 1906, Gaetano “Tony” Gaudio, a young man from Calabria, set out for the American Dream, arriving in the United States with a passion for cinematography, which was just developing in the motion picture industry. His family ran a successful photography studio in Cosenza, Italy, so making pictures was in his DNA. Tony eventually made his way from New York to Hollywood, where he quickly grew to be one of the most prized cinematographers in the industry, working with Hollywood's elite such as Betty Davis, Errol Flynn, and dozens of others. He won an Academy Award for his work in 1937 for Anthony Adverse. His statuette is missing, just like his story was for decades, until Gino, Mary, and other descendants of the Gaudio family brought his story to life in this documentary, with the hope of also finding his prized Oscar. Please join my interview with Gino and Mary on all video and audio platforms of #littleItalyPodcast, #DeborahKobyltLIVE and the #LittleItalyOfLAPodcast. This week on The Video Store Podcast, we're diving into some adventurous waters with four pirate films you might not have rented yet, but are worth a look. These films span decades, showing how Hollywood has captured the allure of swashbuckling adventures over time. Whether you're a fan of classic Hollywood, musicals, or big-budget ‘90s action, I've picked a lineup that I think captures the spirit of the genre in different ways. Here's what's on this episode:Captain Blood (1935)If you're curious about Errol Flynn's big break, Captain Blood is the film to watch. Directed by Michael Curtiz, who later went on to make Casablanca, this movie was released during the Golden Age of Hollywood and set the standard for pirate films to come. In it, Flynn plays Dr. Peter Blood, an Irish physician turned reluctant pirate, a role that became iconic for him. Olivia de Havilland co-stars, marking the first of eight films they'd appear in together. The movie was actually adapted from Rafael Sabatini's 1922 novel, and what's interesting is that Flynn wasn't the studio's first choice. Warner Bros. originally wanted Robert Donat, but when he turned it down, they took a chance on Flynn, who was then unknown. The film went on to be a hit, and Flynn's career took off from there.Treasure Island (1950) Disney's first fully live-action film was Treasure Island, adapted from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel. This film captures the heart of the classic pirate tale with Bobby Driscoll as Jim Hawkins and Robert Newton as the unforgettable Long John Silver. Newton's portrayal of Silver is what many credit with shaping the “pirate accent” we recognize today, especially that exaggerated “Arrr.” For a lot of people, myself included, this is the definitive version of Treasure Island, so it's a must-watch for anyone wanting a straightforward adaptation of the classic tale. The Pirate Movie (1982)The Pirate Movie is very different from the last two films. It is more of a campy, musical rom-com take on The Pirates of Penzance. If you're looking for a quirky, offbeat experience, this film, starring Kristy McNichol and Christopher Atkins, is definitely that. Though critics weren't fond of it when it was released, it's gained a bit of a cult following since then. One interesting thing about this movie is that it openly riffs on the Gilbert and Sullivan opera it's based on, adding a lot of modern (for the time) references. It's worth a watch if you're into musicals and don't mind a less traditional approach to a pirate story.Cutthroat Island (1995)Last up is Cutthroat Island, an ambitious, big-budget adventure directed by Renny Harlin and starring Geena Davis and Matthew Modine. Known mostly for being a notorious box office bomb, it has gained some appreciation over the years for its impressive stunt work, practical effects, and for putting a female pirate in the lead. Davis plays Morgan Adams, a captain on a quest to find hidden treasure. While the film's financial failure might have overshadowed its merits at the time, there's a lot to admire. It's also one of the last pirate movies before Pirates of the Caribbean would revive the genre nearly a decade later. If you're ready for a bit of pirate escapism, these four movies offer different takes on the genre, from classic Hollywood adventure to musical satire to large-scale nineties action. Listen to the show to hear a little more about each film and why they're worth watching, and maybe even renting, this week. This is a public episode. This month, I was pleased to welcome back Dan Mecca & Conor O'Donnell, two friends & the hosts of The Film Stage's excellent podcast The B-Side, which covers movie stars in a fascinating way, by focusing not on the films that made or kept them famous but on the ones that actors made in between. Equally skilled at coming up with highly original show themes for their guest appearances here, Dan & Conor joined me in Season 4 to discuss the role of work in the films of director Ron Howard & in 2022, we focused on the transition that gifted crew members such as Jack Fisk & Douglas Trumbull made to the position of director. This season, they're back to celebrate the '90s to early aught renaissance of old-fashioned Errol Flynn-style swashbuckler pictures. Charting the resurgence in genre popularity after the surprise success of ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES (& the Bryan Adams theme song), Dan & Conor walk listeners through the changes '90s filmmakers made from not only the '20s & '30s but also the sword spectaculars of their more fantastical '80s counterparts. Focusing primarily on the films FIRST KNIGHT, THE MASK OF ZORRO, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, & PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, we dissect the style, actors, productions, & filmmakers of these films & others in this same genre or old-fashioned adventure epic mold from A KNIGHT'S TALE to THE MUMMY to CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON & beyond. Along the way, we coin a new catchphrase in "buckle some swash," I tell a story about a dude I went out with once who didn't realize that Keith Richards & Mick Jagger were two different people, & we go on several memorable tangents. It's a delightfully spirited feature-length chat that's fun for all... who are all for fun. Dan & Conor's Bio: A producer & filmmaker living in Pittsburgh, Dan Mecca started The Film Stage with Jordan Raup in college at Buffalo & Conor O'Donnell is a post-production supervisor based in New York City & also serves as a critic for The Film Stage. The Rocketeer is a 1991 film set in the late 1930s that follows the story of Cliff Seacord, a stunt pilot who becomes a superhero known as the Rocketeer. The movie was initially released as a Disney film but later changed to Touchstone due to its uncertain target audience. The film has pacing issues and struggled to find its audience, but has gained a cult following in recent years. The cast includes Billy Campbell as Cliff, Jennifer Connelly as Jenny, and Timothy Dalton as the villain Neville Sinclair. The movie draws on real rumors and Hollywood history, incorporating elements like Howard Hughes and Errol Flynn. It also features nods to Betty Page and the Zeppelin. Overall, The Rocketeer is a nostalgic and visually appealing film that blends adventure, romance, and superhero elements. We are going way back in time, to good ole 1935, and reviewing one of the greatest swashbuckling pirate flicks of all time. Captain Blood! With Errol Flynn and Olivia De Havilland in their first major cinema roles. Plus, the great Basil Rathbone (Sherlock Holmes and the Sheriff of Nottingham) collides with Errol Flynn in a marvelous sword fight on the beach. Directed too by Michael Curtiz of Casablanca, to name a small film. You just don't get that same kind of high adventure glory these days. And if you think that the 1930s of cinema may be a little archaic, well you just need to dive back in time and find out how sophisticated and dialed in the motion picture industry was at this point. They don't call it the golden age of cinema for nothing. Fantastic sets, battling miniature Manowar ships, stunts galore, artistic cinematography, solid pacing, and acting to just put a smile on your face. The 30's to 40's just deliver the best pirate films. Joining me on the show today, is comic book creator and good buddy, Jack Foster of Reckless Eyeballs. featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2591: Bill Newton Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 8 June 2024 is Bill Newton.William Ellis Newton, VC (8 June 1919 – 29 March 1943) was an Australian recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to a member of the British and Commonwealth armed forces. He was honoured for his actions as a bomber pilot in Papua New Guinea during March 1943 when, despite intense anti-aircraft fire, he pressed home a series of attacks on the Salamaua Isthmus, the last of which saw him forced to ditch his aircraft in the sea. Newton was still officially posted as missing when the award was made in October 1943. It later emerged that he had been taken captive by the Japanese, and executed by beheading on 29 March.Raised in Melbourne, Newton excelled at sport, playing cricket at youth state level. He joined the Citizen Military Forces in 1938, and enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) in February 1940. Described as having the dash of "an Errol Flynn or a Keith Miller", Newton served as a flying instructor in Australia before being posted to No. 22 Squadron, which began operating Boston light bombers in New Guinea late in 1942. Having just taken part in the Battle of the Bismarck Sea, he was on his fifty-second mission when he was shot down and captured. Newton was the only Australian airman to receive a Victoria Cross for action in the South West Pacific theatre of World War II, and the sole Australian to be so decorated while flying with an RAAF squadron. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:38 UTC on Saturday, 8 June 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Bill Newton on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Brian Standard.

Daily hydration. Lekkere smaken, laag in calorieën of volledig zonder suikers. MIke's audio starts out trash for 3 minutes, then all systems are normal. Have no fear! Cinema 9 did a movie called The Island last week. Everybody was pissed. Louis Gossett Jr. bit the big one recently, but apparently there will be no Iron Eagle series marathon going down. Govier's mom's boyfriend from 1988 had an ancient sundial in his yard plus he wanted to be a swashbuckling pirate like Errol Flynn. You guys go Joe Lowry or Joe Yori? Which movies do you own outright in your Amazon video library? Govier has 12 or so in his library as the guys review Mike's library. Did Govier overdraft his bank account to purchase the 1993 rollerblading classic Airborne. Tom Green is in town just in time for opening day in Detroit while Tim Robinson is also doing a live show the same day. Get ready for some John Tesh Roundball Rock! Carrot Top is apparently tailor made for Eyes Wide Shut parties. Govier provides a quick appraisal of the hotels of downtown Detroit. One story didn't go too well for him. What's the better show: Detroiters or I Think You Should Leave? We got your emails! Travis from Cinema 9 & 93-94 A Music Pod kicks it off. Travis was there in the 90's, but he wants to know what type of animal all the guys would like to be if they could. Plus it's time for another round of name that random guy from Hartland High School in 1997 who had a pointless nickname like Horse. Get ready for Uncle Luke & some Doo Doo Brown coming your way! YouTube etiquette when it comes to liking or subbing videos is a thing. Luke has a problem with Sand Cranes. The adventures of Finn Gurrer continue! Where will Finn take us this week? That's what you're about to find out. Kirk Cousins or Finn's cousins? Steve has your upcoming 2024 solar eclipse report for those of you in the United States who want to catch a glimpse of this unique event. Steve is our astronomer of record. If he doesn't know, ask Google. Mike reminisces about the 1994 eclipse that his science class went outside to see in May of 1994. Steve also has thoughts on the new True Detective, including the music choices. Of course we couldn't end the show without sneaking in more Israeli/Palestinian murderous chaos. 7 members from chef Jose Andres charity called World Central Kitchen were targeted with drone strikes by the IDF & Jose Andres is furious about it. We love you all! This talk show is not the same without you listening and emailing us your highly entertaining thoughts. We close the show with I'll Bear by Car Colors. George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast to review five all-time great classic films released on Blu-ray in December.  We go through each of the films and the included extras to help you decide if you want to add these films to your home collection. We start with the highly requested  TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932) from MGM starring Johnny Weissmuller and Maureen O'Sullivan.  This terrific casting made this film a hit on its initial release and led to a series of films.  But this is the one that started it all and the new 4K scan means that you now get to see and hear the film in the best condition since its initial release.  The same can be said for our next film, ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) starring Greta Garbo in her first "talkie" film.  Garbo shines, and the film still packs a punch 93 years after its initial release.  Next is the Academy Award-winning film THE GREAT ZIEGFELD (1936) starring the irrepressible William Power, Best Actress winner Juice Rainer, and Myrna Loy in the biopic on the famous entertainer.  We review all of the extras on this packed disc and George details the restoration and many of the stars of the film.  Our fourth film is the powerful drama MADAME BOVARY (1949), starring Jennifer Jones, Van Heflin, Louise Jourdan, and James Mason.   We discuss the powerful teaming of director Vincente Minnelli and composer Milos Rossa and their importance to the film.  And we detail the extras, especially the MGM 25th Anniversary retrospective film.  We wrap up our discussion with the fan favorite GENTLEMAN JIM (1942) starring Errol Flynn in his favorite role and directed by one of his favorite collaborators, director Raoul Walsh.  This is pure entertainment at its best, combining drama, comedy, and sport. The disc is loaded with extras and makes for a tantalizing release.Purchase links:TARZAN, THE APE MAN (1932)MADAME BOVARY (1949)THE GREAT ZIEGFELD  (1936)GENTLEMAN JIM (1942)ANNA CHRISTIE (1930) The Extras Facebook pageThe Extras Twitter Warner Archive & Warner Bros Catalog GroupOtaku Media produces podcasts, behind-the-scenes extras, and media that connect creatives with their fans and businesses with their consumers.
