This episode was recorded in Reno, Nevada, during the 2025 Western Dairy Management Conference.Dr. Hutjens' presentation focused on herds producing seven pounds of milk fat and milk protein per cow per day, and the genetics, on-farm management and nutrition to make that happen. The panel discusses where components could top out, how added dietary fat has influenced components and the importance of high quality forage to de novo fat synthesis. (4:09)The panel explores how well nutritionists are keeping up with rapid genetic change in milk component production and how farmers respond to recommendations for things like rumen-protected fatty acids and supplemental fat. Dr. Nelson shares some of the unique challenges and opportunities faced by the California dairy producers he works with. (11:56)Dr. Hutjens gives some benchmark values for energy and protein efficiency. The panel debates the merit of energy-corrected milk per stall as an efficiency measure, with the consensus being it might lead to crowding, which would then probably decrease milk and component production due to decreasing cow comfort. The group also discusses selecting for feed efficiency and the heritability of feed efficiency. (16:33)The panel dives into the topic of feed ingredients. High-oleic soybeans and high quality forages are a focus in some parts of the country. Dr. Nelson discusses non-forage fiber sources available in the California market, such as citrus, plums, apples and carrots. The group talks more about how high-sugar byproducts influence rumen fermentation, which is different from starch, as well as benefits in palatability, digestibility and intake. (21:03)Dr. Hutjens talks about benchmarks for milk components and different strategies for increasing component production. Rumen-protected amino acids, purchased fats, roasted high-oleic soybeans and urea are discussed. The group also talks about what might happen if milk processors start asking for less milk fat, for example. Dr. Hutjens talks about how nutritionists can help balance rations to yield different results for different markets. (33:04)Panelists share their take-home thoughts. Vært: Signe Frederikke PedersenSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, Ken Lain, The Mountain Gardener, shares how to stop leaf spot on purple leaf plums. Excessive rain often leads to leaf spot diseases on trees, causing blemishes, holes, or tearing on foliage - signs of plant stress. While typically not fatal for mature trees, these bacterial infections thrive in humid, warm conditions and are spread by birds and insects. How do you stop leaf spot from spreading? Today's episode is filled with the big questions of our age. These are the things that government top brass are pouring over day in, day out: Is Martin Lewis up there with Galileo and Mozart? Can you put goodwill on your shelf? And most divisively, is wee ever fine in a paddling pool? It's a show that asks questions rather than answers them, and you the you the listener are left to make up your own minds on these contentious issues. What we can guarantee, however, is wall-to-wall Elis and John certified bangers: top-tier anecdotes, a classic Cymru Connection, a wonderfully chaotic Made Up Game, and a toe-curling Oasis-based shame to round things off. Sit back and enjoy the Elis and John vibes in your area. You can get involved with this crazy old thing we call the Elis and John show by emailing elisandjohn@bbc.co.uk, or WhatsApping 07974 293 022.

Junk Journalling and the Plums
Date: 12th of August, 2025Location: Madeira, PortugalA Note To The Runners: Get my book here.Join The JL Mentorship: Fill out the form here.Buy me a coffee here: My go-to order is a long black. Poem #1:All morning I thought of figs. Quietly, they sit, beside my makeshift dining table. The tree talks louder the further August goes on. I run into the highest point of blue I can reach, till the mountain says no more.My legs bear the dust, I'm grateful I bought water.Would I just be a rock without this life that bleeds through me?Off the mountain, In thick accent, I'm handed ameixas In small plastic, a dozen or so?Are these from your home?My Father's. Plums. They'll do. Days before it was beetroot and corn.Returning to my stone walls,I think of the fig tree. Waiting to nourish me. I take just one. One fig for now.Poem #2:Every epoch is paired with a flavour.Lands that felt like the last frontier were salty.Late summers in France, peaches under castle shade. Some years, I made myself sick, overdosing on Camembert. Saved my bread, and Swiss Chocolate. Taste is amplified by the seasons,And multiplied by the company.Yet, it becomes cemented to my coreIn the days I feel most alive. The European Summer of 25' Will be remembered by the subtle sweetness,Of the fig tree in the North of Portugal.Plastic buckets full,Must be eaten,In two days. These days will be remembered by the honeying of figs,And the forgingOf the manI am becoming.

The egg industry is calling for better labelling of products using imported eggs, and for all imports of eggs and egg products to be checked at the border. The British Egg Industry Council says there's been a rise in imports and they're concerned that eggs contaminated with salmonella are not being picked up. Plums used to be a big crop for British farms back in the 1960s, but over the decades the amount grown here has fallen dramatically. However, one farm in Kent believes the tide is turning. WB Chambers near Maidstone say new varieties, new orchards and new technology are extending the growing season and providing consumers with British plums for longer. As part of our week-long focus on harvest, we see how this year's oil seed rape crop has fared. We visit a farmer in East Yorkshire who used a drone to help seal the pods with a special sealant a couple of months ago, to stop them falling off too early. He says it's saved a lot of crop - and money.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

With Usagi Yojimbo: Ten Thousand Plums, Stan Sakai enters his forty-first year as the rabbit ronin's chronicler. Each decade represents about a year in the title character's life, which you can track if you're paying attention to the seasons surrounding Usagi's adventures. If you're paying even closer attention, you can map his footsteps across sixteenth-century Japan and anticipate his next conflict or reunion, but don't worry if you lack such concentration. As you'll hear in today's episode, Sakai certainly does not. Usagi Yojimbo Ten Thousand Plums begins with a fox spirit and her daughter struggling to survive. Sickness has taken the child, and the mother seeks help from a nearby village. They reject her despite having access to the Shogun's prized plum orchard and the healing umeboshi (pickled plums) it produces. By the time Usagi, his cousin Yukichi, and the bounty hunter Gen arrive, fury has rained down upon the town, creating a dangerous suspicion of outsiders. With Ten Thousand Plums, Stan Sakai continues to explore the themes of deceptive appearances, selflessness, and selfishness, which he thoroughly dug into with the previous Usagi Yojimbo storyline, The Crow. We chat with Sakai about this current preoccupation, how it challenges Usagi and Yukichi, and where it could lead the cousins. No major spoilers lie within our conversation, but Stan Sakai does tease a few things that will undoubtedly spark intense curiosity for longtime Usagi Yojimbo readers. The Sword of Narukami is in play. Could another famous sword re-appear, too? Following Ten Thousand Plums' first three issues, a new story entitled "Tabo" should prove to be Stan Sakai's most personal comic yet. It was written shortly after his younger brother Kenneth passed away, and Sakai kindly expands on what this tale means for him and his family. You'll hear how "Tabo" places Usagi and Yukichi on a pilgrimage in search of the miraculous goddess called "The Mother," forcing Usagi to confront his skepticism in ways he never has before. The first issue of Usagi Yojimbo Ten Thousand Plums is now available from Dark Horse Comics and Dogu Publishing. The second issue will arrive on April 16th, and we have an exclusive preview of its first five pages on the Comic Book Couples Counseling website. Make sure to keep up to date on all things Usagi Yojimbo by visiting Stan Sakai's website and Instagram. This week's episode is sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Podcast Summary Unlock the secrets of the resilient beach plum, Prunus maritima, and learn how these tenacious plants help fight coastal erosion while offering a rich tapestry of horticultural history. We'll explore the historical significance of the Cape Cod Beach Plum Growers Association and discover the quirky connections between its founders, the environmental elements they studied, and the playful coincidences they encountered. Through stories filled with both horticultural insight and wit, we celebrate the legacy of these dedicated individuals who refused to let the allure of the beach plum fade into obscurity.
