fWotD Episode 2514: Argosy (magazine) Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Saturday, 23 March 2024 is Argosy (magazine).Argosy was an American magazine, founded in 1882 as The Golden Argosy, a children's weekly, edited by Frank Munsey and published by E. G. Rideout. Munsey took over as publisher when Rideout went bankrupt in 1883, and after many struggles made the magazine profitable. He shortened the title to The Argosy in 1888 and targeted an audience of men and boys with adventure stories. In 1894 he switched it to a monthly schedule and in 1896 he eliminated all non-fiction and started using cheap pulp paper, making it the first pulp magazine. Circulation had reached half a million by 1907, and remained strong until the 1930s. The name was changed to Argosy All-Story Weekly in 1920 after the magazine merged with All-Story Weekly, another Munsey pulp, and from 1929 it became just Argosy. In 1925 Munsey died, and the publisher, the Frank A. Munsey Company, was purchased by William Dewart, who had worked for Munsey. By 1942 circulation had fallen to no more than 50,000, and after a failed effort to revive the magazine by including sensational non-fiction, it was sold that year to Popular Publications, another pulp magazine publisher. Popular converted it from pulp to slick format, and initially attempted to make it a fiction-only magazine, but gave up on this within a year. Instead it became a men's magazine, carrying fiction and feature articles aimed at men. Circulation soared and by the early 1950s was well over one million.Early contributors included Horatio Alger, Oliver Optic, and G. A. Henty. During the pulp era, many famous writers appeared in Argosy, including O. Henry, James Branch Cabell, Albert Payson Terhune, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Erle Stanley Gardner, Robert E. Howard, and Max Brand. Argosy was regarded as one of the most prestigious publications in the pulp market, along with Blue Book, Adventure and Short Stories. After the transition to slick format it continued to publish fiction, including science fiction by Robert Heinlein, Arthur Clarke, and Ray Bradbury. From 1948 to 1958 it published a series by Gardner called "The Court of Last Resort" which examined the cases of dozens of convicts who maintained their innocence, and succeeding in overturning many of the convictions. NBC adapted the series for television in 1957.Popular sold the magazine to David Geller in 1972, and in 1978 Geller sold it to the Filipacchi Group, which closed down the magazine at the end of the year. The title has been revived several times, most recently in 2016.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 01:09 UTC on Saturday, 23 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Argosy (magazine) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Arthur Neural.

Carroll John Daly, born on September 14, 1889, in Yonkers, New York, carved an essential niche in detective fiction as a pioneering figure in the hardboiled crime genre. His early life was marked by versatility; attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City and engaging in roles such as usher, projectionist, and actor. Notably, he ventured into entrepreneurship, opening the first movie theater in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Unlike contemporaries like Dashiell Hammett, who drew from real-life detective work, Daly's journey into the hardboiled genre was unique. He lived a quiet life in White Plains, New York, until the age of 33 when his first crime story was published. Despite his reserved demeanor, Daly's literary creations, characterized by gritty narratives and tough protagonists, laid the foundation for the hardboiled genre. Carroll John Daly's seminal contribution to detective fiction is epitomized in "The False Burton Combs," a groundbreaking crime story published in Black Mask magazine in December 1922. While Daly may not be lauded solely for the quality of his writing, his distinction lies in being the first to amalgamate the defining elements of the dark, violent hardboiled story. The narrative precedes the works of iconic figures like Dashiell Hammett and Mickey Spillane, influencing an entire generation of crime writers. Daly's popularity in his time was unparalleled; the mention of his name on a magazine cover alone could boost sales significantly. In a Black Mask readers' poll, Daly even surpassed Hammett and Erle Stanley Gardner in popularity. Today, his writing may be viewed as a nostalgic blend of quaint and camp, but it's essential to recognize Daly's pivotal departure from mainstream detective fiction, drawing inspiration from the Wild West rather than Victorian-era mysteries. Carroll John Daly, often considered the progenitor of hardboiled crime fiction, left an indelible mark on the genre. While his writing may be seen today as a bridge between quaint and camp, Daly's significance lies in being the first to blend all the defining elements of the dark, violent hardboiled story. His popularity during his time was unparalleled, influencing not only contemporaries like Hammett but shaping the trajectory of dozens of writers who followed. By rejecting mainstream detective fiction conventions of his era, Daly drew inspiration from Westerns, featuring tough, urban heroes reminiscent of gunslingers. Creating the first hard-boiled story, "The False Burton Combs," Daly, along with Hammett, established the rules of the hardboiled genre that future writers would adhere to or break, setting the stage for a transformative era in detective fiction. Jeffrey Marks is a long-time mystery fan and freelancer . After numerous mystery author profiles for The Armchair Detective, Mystery Scene, and other genre publications, he chose to chronicle the short but full life of mystery writer Craig Rice. That biography (Who Was That Lady?) encouraged him to write mystery fiction. His works include Atomic Renaissance: Women Mystery Writers of the 1940s/1950s, a group biography of women, including lesbian authors, who had written in the years following WWII and their impact on the genre. Marks had corresponded to many of them during his time working on the Rice biography. He also published a biography of mystery author and critic Anthony Boucher entitled Anthony Boucher. He received a grant while working on that book. It was nominated for an Agatha and fittingly, won an Anthony.Marks is currently working on a biography of Erle Stanley Gardner, a book on Gardner's work with his Pre-Innocence Project, Court of Last Resort, and a dual biography of the two men who wrote as Ellery Queen.Marks has also written mystery fiction. His earliest works were short fiction, and he has won some regional awards for those works. He published four short story anthologies on various themes, including Canine Crimes and Canine Christmas from Random House, which included Marks' stories about a queer detective. He's currently working on a series of semi-autobiographical mystery short stories that will appear in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. These tackle issues surrounding gay men in the 1970s.His work has won a number of regional awards including the Barnes and Noble Prize and he was nominated for a Maxwell award (DWAA), an Edgar (MWA), three Agathas (Malice Domestic), two Macavity awards, and three Anthony awards (Bouchercon). Marks retired from teaching in 2020, and today, he writes from his home in Cincinnati, which he shares with his husband and three dogs.Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/jeffrmarks/Twitter https://twitter.com/jeffrmarksInstagram https://www.instagram.com/jeffrmarks/Website http://www.jeffreymarks.com*****************Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 to promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers. You're invited to a party in celebration of would have been Dame Agatha Christie's what would have been her 132nd birthday.  Tonight, we have a panel on The Golden Age of Mystery in her honor.  Taking part are two talented mystery author's Greg Hickey and Katherine Kovacic! And my fellow podcaster with the delightful; Madame Perry's Salon, Jennifer Perry!  This is truly a party in honor of Agatha Christie and mysteries she helped to bring to the world. Dorothy L Sayers, Margery Allingham, Ngaio Marsh and Agatha Christie were considered the four Queens of the Golden Age of Mystery.  There were men too, including Anthony Berkeley, G. K. Chesterton, Freeman Wills Crofts and Austin Freeman. And then there is the American group including; Mary Roberts Rinehart, Ellery Queen, Erle Stanley Gardner and S. S. Van Dine they had a similar style to their British counterparts. Greg, Katherine, Jen and I have a ball just talking about these great writers and the classics they brought to life and of course we talk about the birthday girl, Agatha.  It's a fun chat.

After the success of the Marlowe movies, Chandler knew the detective was a sure-fire hit, but in the end had very little involvement with the radio program. Van Heflin was the first actor to portray the cynical sleuth in a series that debuted in 1947, a scheduled summer replacement for The Bob Hope show. With his restrained yet forceful handling of the part, Heflin turned Philip Marlowe into a slicker sleuth than most. Chandler reportedly disliked Heflin's portrayal, believing it was “thoroughly flat,” according to a letter sent to writer Erle Stanley Gardner. Marlowe returned to the airwaves in the fall of 1948, played by Gerald Mohr. The Broadway actor's baritone voice was perfect for the fictional Los Angeles detective, and Mohr played him as a “packed personality” who would even rough up a street urchin to get information. Marlowe was a lone wolf who hired himself out to anyone who could pay his “ten-a-day plus expenses.” When the series left the air in 1951, CBS had begun production of a television pilot in the hopes of adapting the character for the tube. Mohr went along for the ride but the pilot didn't sell. No worries, the actor soon found himself being offered strong supporting roles in television series and motion pictures by nearly every major TV and film studio. Philip Carey was cast as Marlowe in an ABC 1959-60 TV series and Powers Boothe portrayed the celebrated detective in a top-notch HBO series from 1983-1986.

The June 17th, 1947 edition of Billboard Magazine reviewed the first Marlowe episode. It was noted that similar shows were expected to pull a rating of 7.5. The magazine stated that “Milton Geiger's adaptation adhered to Red Wind's language almost to the letter, and captured most of the colorful, almost poetic flavor. “On the debit side was the enormity of the job of breaking down Chandler's complex plotting within the thirty minute limit. The program galloped through the first fifteen minutes as the action unfolded. “The Second half pace slowed down to a crawl, however, as everyone desperately strove to clarify the proceedings. Repeated conjecture and explanation of the cast's intricate relationships unfortunately had confusion rampant by the end.” The reviewer was quick to point out that “Even films, found that ninety minutes was hardly enough to cram in all of Chandler's ideas. Perhaps the shorter stories will prove more suited for air. Their flair for mood and language certainly is hard to surpass. “The commercials were harsh and repetitive, stressing that Pepsodent is "preferred three to one" by American families. Foote, Cone & Belding seems to be trying its Lucky Strike technique on the dentifrice. It's a three to one bet that the incessant "three to one" chatter becomes as notorious as LS/MFT.” On the lead Billboard stated: “Heflin's emoting in the role of the tough guy with a heart was effective, with excellent character projection. Lurene Tuttle, as the woman in the case, put on her usual good performance. Producer James Fonda struggled valiantly to keep the pacing level, but was handcuffed by the urgency of the story. The script contained an inside joke. The name of Lola's dead lover was changed to Johnny Dalmas, the name of the original detective in Chandler's “Red Wind” before the story became Marlowe's. Chandler thought it was flat. Van Heflin was too recognizable. He didn't like picturing Heflin's face emoting Marlowe's lines. Erle Stanley Gardner told Chandler the show's plot and narration moved too fast to be understood. There was a bigger argument at stake within the industry: Were summer replacements a worthwhile investment? Sponsor Magazine claimed that it cost advertisers money to take a thirteen-week hiatus. It was money lost in the form of lower summertime ratings. But, You couldn't just blame it on Summer replacements though. For example, Bob Hope's 1946-47 rating was 27.6, but his combined rating for June and September 1947 was 14.4. People spent more time outdoors in warm months. It didn't matter what was on the air. Plus, there was still no way to effectively measure car radio ratings. Given that Hope's show cost twenty-one thousand weekly dollars to produce, while Marlowe cost just four thousand, Pepsodent was getting a bargain. By the end of summer, Marlowe was the highest-rated summer replacement series on the air.

La Jolla, California. 1947. We're at 6005 Camino de la Costa at the home of Raymond Chandler. It's been three years since the fifty-nine year-old wrote a full length novel. Instead he's worked on two screen plays. Chandler co-adapted Double Indemnity with Billy Wilder, and penned The Blue Dahlia. Both earned him Academy Award nominations. Looking for more income, his agent has negotiated a deal for Chandler to help bring a thirteen-week summer series to NBC. It'll sub for Bob Hope on Tuesday nights. The main character? Chandler's detective Philip Marlowe. To date Marlowe had been the focal point of four novels and four films — including two almost simultaneously released this past winter. This will, however, be the first time that Philip Marlowe comes to radio's airwaves in a regular show. Tonight, we'll go back in time and spotlight that summer's highest-rated replacement series The Adventures of Philip Marlowe, starring Van Heflin. ___________ Raymond Chandler was born on July 23rd, 1888 in Chicago, Illinois. He spent his early years in Nebraska until his father, an alcoholic railway civil engineer, abandoned the family. In 1900 his Irish mother Florence moved with Raymond to England. Chandler went to Dulwich College in London. In 1907 he became a naturalized British subject and took a job as an Admiral, but resigned. He grabbed a reporter position at the Daily Express and later the Westminster Gazette. Unhappy in England, Chandler wanted to be a writer, so he returned to America in 1912. He settled in San Francisco, where he took a correspondence course in bookkeeping. His mother joined him there soon after. They moved to Los Angeles in 1913, where he strung tennis rackets, picked fruit, and found steady employment with the Los Angeles Creamery. But then, The U.S. and Canada finally joined World War I. In 1917 Chandler enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He saw combat in the trenches in France and was twice hospitalized with Spanish flu. He was in flight training with the Royal Air Force when the war ended. He returned to Los Angeles and began a love affair with Cissy Pascal, a married woman eighteen years his senior. She amicably divorced her husband in 1920, but Chandler's mother disapproved of the relationship and refused to sanction the marriage. For the next four years Chandler supported both. His mother passed away in 1923. Raymond married Cissy on February 6th, 1924. Having begun in 1922 as a bookkeeper and auditor, by 1931 he was a highly paid VP at the Dabney Oil Syndicate. But he suffered frequent mental health breakdowns. He drank too much, skipped work, was promiscuous with female employees, and he publicly threatened suicide. Chandler was fired in 1932. Detective and suspense shows had been on radio since the medium's inception. They were often similar to dime store novels. Sherlock Holmes began in 1930. Chandler taught himself to write pulp-style fiction by analyzing a novelette by Erle Stanley Gardner. His first story, "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", was published in Black Mask Magazine in 1933. His lead character was called “Mallory.” It took him five months to finish the story. Erle Stanley Gardner wrote entire stories in three or four days. He later said, “Wandering up and down the Pacific Coast in an automobile, I began to read pulp magazines. This was in the great days of Black Mask. It struck me that some of the writing was pretty forceful and honest, even though it had a crude aspect. I decided that this might be a good way to try to learn to write fiction and get paid a small amount of money at the same time. I spent five months on an eighteen-thousand word novelette and sold it for one-hundred-eighty dollars. After that I never looked back, although I had many uneasy periods looking forward.”

Geared more towards action than courtroom drama, it mixed mystery and soap opera, with attorney Perry Mason sometimes even exchanging gunfire with criminals. Erle Stanley Gardner's literary success with the Perry Mason novels convinced Warner Brothers to try its hand, unsuccessfully, with some motion pictures. However, the Perry Mason radio show stayed on the air for 12 years. As The Edge of Night, it ran for another 30 years on television, but Gardner disliked the proposed daytime television version due to a lack of his own creative control. He ultimately withheld his endorsement of the daytime TV show, forcing the name change.

Perry Mason! This episode is chock full-o SPOILERS, so if you haven't watched S:1 (WTF), then skip this one. We have a Special and a Shorty this week too! Elaine was singing the praises of the original Fred Steiner's Perry Mason theme song from early on. The closer we got to the end of season 1, the more she heard the original theme under the end credit music. In the finale, there was no mistake about it. Steiner's theme was loud and clear under the Terence Blanchard end credits. Blanchard also composed music for a number of Spike Lee movies, including Da 5 Bloods, which we talked about in Episode 11, BlacKKKlansman, and Bamboozled. Check out the original theme f and the end music from the HBO series finale on our page. Steiner also worked on TV shows like Star Trek (TOS), The Twilight Zone (TOS), and Gunsmoke. His film credits include The Night of the Living Dead (1968), Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi , and The Color Purple. Our S;2 predictions:Perry Mason (Matthew Rhys), Della Street (Juliet Rylance), and Paul Drake (Chris Chalk) will definitely be back (since they are all in place!!) and Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham) will be working for Hamilton Burger (Justin Kirk) who will move into the D.A, role. With Ennis is out of the way, Detective Holcomb (Eric Lange) may be back, and he may have it in for Paul Drake. D.A. Maynard Barnes is humiliated and pissed off af, but the last we heard from him, he still intended to run for mayor. So we might see the return of Stephen Root, although I think Travis would prefer he devote his time to Barry, and I hope he keeps showing up in Lincoln Project anti-Trump ads! Listen to this episode to hear us argue about the fate of Sister Alice (Tatiana Maslany.)Season 2 may be The Case of the Velvet Claws, the first of the Perry Mason novels by Erle Stanley Gardner and S6: E22 of the original series.

“Why Do You Write Pulp?” with G. W. Thomas and M. D. Jackson. A casual conversation on why and how we write the stuff we do. What is pulp? What makes a pulp writer? Why is Erle Stanley Gardner a pulp writer and Ernest Hemingway not? Why is Raymond Chandler considered a darling of the literary scene while Dashiell Hammett is not? When dis we first discover pulp writing and what was our "gateway drug" into the world of pulp fiction? Along the way M. D. Jackson talks a little about his new book Wild Incorporated: The Shattered Men. G. W. Thomas spills the beans on his new project, Devil's Gulch. Fascinating conversation from two lifelong pulp fiction aficionados. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/darkworlds/message
