Bicentennial Man was the 40th highest grossing movie of 1999, opening December 17th in 4th place and taking in $87 million dollars worldwide on an almost literally unbelievable $100 million dollar budget. It's also the one movie of the year to star the late Sam Neill. Directed by Chris Columbus with script by Elia Kazan's son Nicholas Kazan, based on the short story “The Bicentennial Man” AND the novel “The Positronic Man” by Isaac Asimov, with perhaps the most phoned-in score James Horner ever wrote, Bicentennial Man stars Robin Williams, Sam Neil, Embeth Davidtz, Wendy Crewson, Oliver Platt, Kiersten Warren, Hallie Eisenberg, John Michael Higgins, Bradley Whitford, Stephen Root, and noted January 6th Capitol Insurrectionist, Jay Johnston. This week, John and Julia talk "family films", uncanny valleys, Williams, and, of course, Sam Neill.

Widow’s Bay Apple TV+'s Widow's Bay (2026) arrives with a siren song of small-town mystery and supernatural scares, firmly planting itself in that eerie territory somewhere between Stephen King‘s entire back catalogue and “Parks and Rec”(Not that Quinny would know)… Created by Katie Dippold and starring Matthew Rhys alongside Kate O'Flynn and Stephen Root, The series follows a skeptical small town mayor trying to revitalise a struggling island community… while said community politely insists that no… it is, in fact, extremely cursed. It’s seaside charm, folklore that refuses to stay folklore, and a creeping sense that the local tourism slogan probably shouldn't be “The next Martha’s Vineyard and definitely not cursed”.  With its blend of horror and comedy, it's the perfect playground for trope-spotting and an amount of nervous laughter. Joining you on this misty journey are your fearless hosts: Dion, Jill, and Quinny. Together, they dig into the show's classic horror beats, lingering dread, and the straight up “NOPE” energy of creepy frickin’ clowns.  Also in this episode… Because tonal consistency is overrated, the team also wanders into: The Sheep Detectives (2026) — a delightfully odd mystery comedy where a flock of sheep attempt to solve their shepherd's murder (yes, really, and yes, we have questions). A reflection on the recent passing of Sam Neill, the beloved Jurassic Park star, who died aged 78—leaving behind a remarkable legacy across film and television. Synopsis Tom Loftis is the skeptical mayor of a sleepy, supernatural New England island town. As he tries to boost local tourism, he must contend with superstitious locals, a centuries-old curse, and bizarre hauntings that threaten residents and visitors. https://youtu.be/6PBwVH1Hob4 As always, a big Widow’s Bay welcome and thank you to all you tourists and…LOCALS… who join in with the LOCAL conversation on the Twitch stream, live each Tuesday night at 7:30pm AEST… FOR LOCALS…  And an especially huge thanks to any of you mushroom addled baddies who are kind enough to support us by casting a cursed coin or two into our jar via Ko-Fi, or subscribing on twitch… every bit helps us to keep the lighthouse shining.;because we’re still scared of the dark… and clowns. Crime Writers On...True Crime Review

Mayor Tom Loftis wants to turn his struggling, New England island town into a thriving tourist attraction. But some residents believe Widow's Bay is cursed, and his efforts to boost it are stirring up its otherworldly forces. Tom is thwarted by his staff's bumbling ineptitude and a series of supernatural encounters that shake his confidence. As the skeptical mayor slowly becomes a believer, he works to break the curse in which any island-born natives die if they leave for the mainland. Emmy nominees Matthew Rhys, Kate O'Flynn, and Stephen Root star in the surprise hit Apple TV series “Widow's Bay.” The show is a balance of absurdist office comedy and part Stephen King novel. Can a misfit group of heroes decipher why their island community is haunted, protect its inhabitants, and reverse the fate of its native-born residents — including Tom's son? OUR SPOILER-FREE REVIEWS OF "WIDOW'S BAY" BEGIN IN THE FINAL 11 MINUTES OF THE EPISODE. This week we are reviewing Apple TV's summer sensation, Widow's Bay, a horror comedy set in a "cursed" New England hamlet. Starring Matthew Rhys, Stephen Root, Kate O'Flynn, Dale Dickey, and Kevin Carroll, the series blends dry workplace humor with Stephen King-esque frights. With sea hags, crawlspace clowns, and a desperate mayor's office, Widow's Bay finds its unique brand propelling itself into the number one show on Apple TV. We discuss its bracing first season, its incredible performances, and its unlikely provenance from the mind of a former Parks & Recreation writer.

The Rough Cut

Widow's Bay Editors – Isaac Hagy, ACE; Kyle Reiter, ACE and Jen Bryson The editors of Widow's Bay may not live on a cursed New England island, but after years of working together across shows like Atlanta, Station Eleven and Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Isaac Hagy, Kyle Reiter and Jen Bryson have developed the kind of shared creative history that makes them feel right at home in one. Created by Katie Dippold for Apple TV, Widow's Bay stars Matthew Rhys as Tom Loftis, the skeptical mayor of a strange little island town where the locals believe the place is cursed. Tom would very much like to turn Widow's Bay into a thriving tourist destination. Unfortunately, the island has other ideas. The series also stars Kate O'Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey. For Isaac, Kyle and Jen, the show was another chance to reunite with longtime collaborator Hiro Murai and post producer Kaitlin Waldron. Isaac's creative relationship with Hiro goes back nearly twenty years, starting with no-budget music videos before eventually leading to Atlanta. Kyle joined that extended creative family through Kaitlin Waldron and Atlanta, while Jen came up through the same post team, beginning as a post PA before eventually moving into the editor's chair. In our interview, the editors talk about how the show was first described to them as something close to "ten episodes of Teddy Perkins," with additional reference points including Jaws, John Carpenter films, Stephen King stories and the specific textures of rural coastal New England. The island itself was designed to feel contemporary, but also strangely out of time — a place without cell phones, without modern comforts, and possibly without a sensible tourism strategy. Today, we are joined by Kate O'Flynn from the Apple TV show Widow's Bay. We got the chance to discuss her superstitions, which include some rather interesting bird-related ideas. We also spoke about her recent turn taking the lead in Ep. 4 of Widow's Bay, "Beach Reads", which sees O'Flynn's character, Patricia, assistant to Matthew Rhys' Mayor Tom, organising a town party while dealing with some old school "friends". It's safe to say that, thanks to an ominous party-planning book, things take a turn for the supernatural. We also discuss if she walked away with any party tips from this experience.. Thanks to Kate for sitting down with us for this wonderful chat about the show, now streaming on Apple TV. About "Widow's Bay" In "Widow's Bay," something lurks beneath the surface. Mayor Tom Loftis (Rhys) is desperate to revive his struggling community. There's no Wi-Fi, spotty cellular reception and he must contend with superstitious locals who believe their island is cursed. He wants these people to respect him. They don't. They think he is soft and cowardly. And he is. But Loftis is determined to build a better future for his teenage son and turn the island into a tourist destination. Miraculously, he succeeds: tourists are finally coming. Unfortunately, the locals were right. After decades of calm, the old stories that seemed too ludicrous to be true start happening again. Blending genuine horror with character-driven comedy, "Widow's Bay" features an ensemble cast led by Rhys, Kate O'Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll and Dale Dickey. The supporting cast includes K Callan and Emmy Award winner Jeff Hiller. Hailing from Apple Studios, "Widow's Bay" is created, showrun and executive produced by Dippold. Murai executive produces through his banner Chum Films alongside Carver Karaszewski, Claudia Shin and Rhys. Murai directs five episodes this season, in addition to directors Ti West, Sam Donovan and Andrew DeYoung.

Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman, marking my 109th episode of VideoFuzzy titled "Luther, Earnest and The Doctor," reporting the progress I've made in cataloging thousands of VHS transfers and digital recordings, and as of this coming month, June of 2026, I'm marking nine years of VideoFuzzy! [2:20] I celebrate that milestone in part with Part 2 of my conversation with musician, media critic and longtime friend Mikey Heinrich from Minneapolis. Part 1 posted as part of sister podcast effort VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack "Ep. 17: Long Way Down" at https://bit.ly/3MJkPkK  In part 2, we chatted primarily about "Knives Out 3: Wake Up, Dead Man" and "Doctor Who." [IG] Mikey Heinrich can be found at his YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@MikeyHeinrich and blogs Doux Reviews: https://www.douxreviews.com/ and 42nd Vizsla: https://the42ndvizsla.blogspot.com/ [31:06] My Fuzzy Feature talked in some detail about the series premiere of BBC's "Luther," [IG] starring Idris Elba in the title role, Detective Inspector John Luther. CONTENT WARNING: Some discussion of animal cruelty was critical to the investigation and therefore unavoidable. I talked about the child abduction case he took on at the top of the episode, and the parents of astrophysicist Alice Morgan, played by Ruth Wilson. They were found shot dead in their home along with the family's dog. Luther's investigation loops in his supervisor, DSU Rose Teller, and his new partner, DS Justin Ripley, and coincides with developments in his separation from Zoe, his wife, played by Indira Varma, namely her lover Mark North, played by Paul McGann. [1:01:30] In Cross Connections, I trace connections for Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson through my media collection. I identify Stephen Root, Jon Curry and Ben Schwartz as Golden Threads. Also Colin Salmon, David Allan Grier, Robert Englund, Ken Jenkins, Rob Morrow, Maura Tierney, Tzi Ma, Patrick Fischler, Todd Stashwick, Caterina Scorsone, Frances Conroy, Diane Farr and Christian Clementsen. Fond Reflection to Eric Dane and his many years on "Grey's Anatomy." [1:14:14] In my Classic Collection [VHS-to-DVD transfers], I cataloged discs 2001 through 2025. Comments on "Grey's Anatomy," Chelsea Handler's appearance as host of the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards and comments at the recent roast of Kevin Hart on Netflix. Also, "The Simpsons," [IG] "Glee," [IG] "Mike & Molly," "Undercovers," "Castle," "Rubicon," "The Office" and "Community." [1:29:38] In my Current Collection [direct to digital], I archived the National Theatre presentation of Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest" [IG] starring Ncuti Gatwa, Hugh Skinner, Sharon D. Clark, Ronke Adoluejo, Eliza Scanlen and Amanda Lawrence. [1:31:28] In Book Reports, I chat about Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre," Emily Brontë's "Wuthering Heights," Daphne du Maurier's "Rebecca" and Margot Douaihy's "Scorched Grace," all of which I can trace as recommendations at one time or another by the "All About Agatha" podcast. It's Apple TV+ this week on the podcast, as that's the last place on TV, or at least one of them, that's still taking big creative swings and also releasing episodes serially. Longtime contributor Omar Gallaga joins Neal Pollack this week to discuss two Apple+ shows. The first, Margot's Got Money Troubles, based on a novel by Rufi Thorpe, comes to us from David E. Kelley, who's been making TV for decades. But this show feels fresh and modern thanks to a winning lead performance from Elle Fanning and a nuanced look at the Only Fans universe. The cast, which includes Nick Offerman, Greg Kinnear, Nicole Kidman, and Marcia Gay Harden, is uniformly excellent, but Michelle Pfeiffer steals the show with a late-career master turn as Margot's mother, a performance so fully realized it doesn't even feel like she's acting.Much more stylized, but no less effective, is Widow's Bay, a new comedy-horror semi-anthology series from comedy writer Katie Dippold, which embraces and deconstructs horror tropes with unabashed delight. It's like the X-Files meets Northern Exposure, with a touch of Twin Peaks and Parks and Recreation. The cast includes Matthew Rhys, Kate O'Flynn, and Stephen Root, and a bevy of monsters and supernatural happenings that bedevils a cursed Massachusetts island. Four episodes in, and Widow's Bay is already a TV legend. Omar and Neal give it their highest recommendation, and no one has better taste than they do.Enjoy the show!

Hey hey, it's DtW on the way, and we're setting up shop in Widow's Bay! Dan and Raul are checking out the homey storefronts, the peaceful coast and the one nice diner in a spooky island town on AppleTV. This is a town that has been compared to Pawnee from Parks & Rec by way of Stephen King, and the description is as apt as the town is very cursed but the people are quite kooky. Mayor Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, is trying to wrangle the odder elements of the isolated community enough to turn it into a tourist destination in an effort to save the floundering town. However, despite his shaky skepticism, the forces of strange and scary are descending on the town like a fog, sometimes literally, and only the quirky loons like Stephen Root's Wyck know how to deal with it. The show is both funnier and scarier than the trailers hinted at, but do these qualities mesh into a solid watch? Listen to this pod and be forewarned!

They begin with George Saunders's Vigil, an inventive, full-cast production featuring Judy Greer, Stephen Root, and McLeod Andrews, where a youthful ghost serves as a death doula to an unrepentant oil tycoon. The conversation then turns to Xochitl Gonzalez's Last Night in Brooklyn, narrated compellingly by Elizabeth Rodriguez, a sharp, observant look at friendship, ambition, and gentrification in mid-2000s Brooklyn. Send us a textWe had questions the moment Playdate 2025 opened on a joyless car chase and a baffling lacrosse scene—and then Isla Fisher strolled in with the “Mama Mafia” and Alan Ritchson arrived like a golden retriever with black-ops training. That's the whiplash of this Prime Video action-comedy: when the energy is right, it's hilarious; when the foundation wobbles, even a decent gag falls flat.We break down why the first act muddies everything a comedy needs to thrive—clear relationships, clean stakes, and jokes that sit inside structure. The stepdad-stepkid bond veers from clingy devotion to cold indifference, making the “learning to protect” arc impossible to buy. Then the movie's best ideas surface: coin-sock mayhem at a Chuck E. Cheese knockoff, a killer phone-call bit mid-car-chase, and Stephen Root delivering a masterclass in character POV in under five minutes. We dig into how Ritchson nails a weird tone—sweet, blunt, and physically sharp—while Kevin James never finds the same wavelength.Yes, we get into the clone twist. On paper, it's a playful genre swing that could power the back half. In practice, CGI crowds replace practical chaos, the chase geography collapses, and a sharp final brawl is undercut by shaky-cam that hides the good choreography. And then there's the choice that derails goodwill: the “kaboom” that wipes out a building of clone kids. Dark comedy needs purpose and release; this feels like shock for shock's sake and breaks the one humane thread the movie earns with CJ.We don't just roast—we rebuild. Tighten the stepdad arc, anchor the chase with real geography, keep the coin-sock, bring Mama Mafia back for a third-act save, and swap the finale's cruelty for a convoy of silver vans whisking kids to safety. With a strategic recast and a structural pass, this could have been a tight, rewatchable romp.If you enjoy craft talk—comedy structure, tone management, practical vs CGI, and performances that recalibrate scenes—press play. The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs | Death and Legends

Challenge Accepted

In this solo Thanksgiving episode of Challenge Accepted, Frank breaks down The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, the Coen Brothers' Netflix Western anthology that has quietly become one of his holiday staples. Story by story, he digs into how each vignette wrestles with death, chance, and human nature, from Tim Blake Nelson's singing gunslinger to Tom Waits' stubborn prospector and that iconic "First time?" hanging meme. Along the way, Frank talks about why the film feels so cozy despite its bleak themes, how the Coens use digital cinematography to shape tone, and what these stories say about nihilism, love, and our place in nature. He also shares a life update about Thomas, explains why Bob's Burgers Thanksgiving episodes are next on the docket, and invites listeners into a holiday mood filled with gratitude, movies, and a little existential dread. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - … Timestamps And Topics 00:00 – Thanksgiving vibes and a Western anthology about death Setting the stage for a cozy Thanksgiving viewing tradition with The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, its Old West setting, and its obsession with mortality. 00:30 – Solo episode, schedule shuffle, and Thomas' big life update Why this is a solo show, Jonathan stepping in for a bit, and celebrating the arrival of "little Thomas" as a new geek in the world. 01:48 – Story 1: Buster Scruggs and our love of violent antiheroes Tim Blake Nelson's singing cowboy, the bright musical tone hiding casual brutality, and how the film forces us to realize we have been rooting for a monster. 03:49 – Myth-making, digital cameras, and the Coens revisiting a 20-year-old story How the segment plays like a live action cartoon, the use of bright digital cinematography, and what it means to film a story they wrote when they were young and fearless. 07:17 – Story 2: Near Algodones and the "First time?" meme James Franco's unlucky outlaw, Stephen Root in full chaos mode, armored pots and pans, botched hangings, and how that viral "First time?" moment taps into nihilism. 12:11 – Chaos, chance, and the pretty girl in the blue dress Reading the ending as both "enjoy the moment" and "life has no grand design," where you might meet someone perfect at the exact moment you cannot do anything about it. 13:24 – Story 3: Meal Ticket and brutal exploitation Harry Melling's limbless orator, Liam Neeson as a cold manager, freak show roots, the math-doing chicken, and the quiet horror of being treated as a "meal ticket." 17:57 – The cliff, the stone, and the unseen choice Why the rock in the river says everything without dialogue, and how the story captures helplessness when your fate is decided by someone else's bottom line. 19:24 – Story 4: All Gold Canyon, Tom Waits, and living with nature Tom Waits' prospector, "Mother Mercury," working with the land instead of stripping it, Mr. Pocket, and a rare Coen story where the character actually survives. 21:35 – Eggs, owls, and taking only what you need Reading the owl nest scene as a lesson in balance: taking one egg instead of all, and how the valley reclaims itself when humanity eventually moves on. 26:10 – Story 5: The Girl Who Got Rattled and the unfairness of the frontier Alice's journey on the wagon train, dependence on men in the Old West, Billy Knapp's gentle cowboy charm, Mr. Arthur's grit, and a fragile romance on the trail. 29:15 – President Pierce, the war party, and a tragic misread The dog as foreshadowing, the tense ambush, Arthur's desperate instructions, and Alice following her assignment a moment too soon. 32:33 – Story 6: The Mortal Remains and a stagecoach to the afterlife Five strangers in a stagecoach, bounty hunters as philosophical guides, competing views of humanity, and the slow realization that everyone on board is already dead. 35:05 – Looking into their eyes as they "try to make sense of it" The slider's chilling explanation of his job and how it mirrors us watching story after story, trying to understand death and never quite managing it. 37:42 – Why Buster Scruggs might be the ultimate Coen Brothers sampler Connections to Raising Arizona, Fargo, and Hudsucker Proxy, experimenting with digital, and why Frank considers this film a masterclass in filmmaking. 38:57 – Bob's Burgers Thanksgiving tournament and holiday plans Kicking off the Bob's Burgers Thanksgiving episode bracket on social media and inviting listeners to vote and share their favorites. 39:37 – Challenge Accepted contact info and gratitude for listeners How to email the show, where to find Challenge Accepted online, and a heartfelt thank you to everyone spending their Thanksgiving season with the podcast. Key Takeaways The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is a surprisingly cozy Thanksgiving watch that pairs warm, nostalgic vibes with stark meditations on death and human nature. The opening Buster Scruggs segment lures you in with music and comedy, then forces you to confront how easily we celebrate violent "heroes" until the cost is made personal. Near Algodones turns a simple bank robbery into a darkly funny loop of bad luck and hanging attempts, with the "First time?" moment becoming a perfect meme for quiet resignation. Meal Ticket is one of the bleakest Coen stories, laying bare how talent and passion can be discarded the second a more profitable novelty appears. All Gold Canyon offers a rare bit of hope, showing a prospector who survives and a valley that proves nature will outlast any one human. The Girl Who Got Rattled underlines how dangerous and unfair the frontier was for women, building a gentle love story only to let chaos tear it apart. The Mortal Remains recontextualizes the entire film, framing the bounty hunters as observers of human confusion about death and the afterlife, much like the audience. Altogether, the anthology works as a meditation on luck, mortality, and acceptance, urging us to live, observe, and appreciate moments even when the ending is inevitable. Memorable Quotes "We are rooting for him as well. He tortures this man before finally killing him, but again, we are rooting for him. Then the Man in Black arrives." "You meet the girl that likes you back when there is nothing you can do about it, and life is that way. It is chaotic and it is fruitless sometimes." "No matter how hard you try, sometimes life will just give you nothing, and an outside source may make that decision for you." "We take what we need, not necessarily what we want, and nature can continue growing as those birds will now hatch." "You just got to roll those dice. You just got to play the cards you get and move forward."
