Then, Sen. Ruben Gallego joins Jon Lovett to talk about how Democrats can win on immigration and how to run a localized race when all politics feels national. 1. Texas Declares Muslim Brotherhood & CARE as Terrorist Organizations Action Taken: Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation designating the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CARE) as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations. Implications: These groups are now prohibited from acquiring real property in Texas. Governor’s Statement: Abbott cited their alleged goals of imposing Sharia law and supporting terrorism globally. Background: CARE is described as a domestic organization linked to Hamas and implicated in supporting terrorism. The Muslim Brotherhood is portrayed as an umbrella group with affiliates like Hamas. Federal Context: Senator Cruz has pushed for federal designation for over a decade. Legislative efforts have faced resistance from State Department bureaucrats. Cruz introduced bipartisan legislation with Senator John Fetterman to designate affiliates first, then the global organization. Political Dynamics: Discussion of partisan challenges and rare bipartisan cooperation. Praise for Fetterman’s independence and criticism of Democratic Party’s internal politics. 2. Gambling Crisis in Professional Sports Issue: Widespread corruption linked to prop bets (bets on specific game events rather than outcomes). Examples: NBA and MLB scandals involving players and coaches fixing aspects of games. Detailed case: Cleveland Guardians pitchers allegedly manipulated pitches for betting gains, earning hundreds of thousands of dollars. Risks: Increased vulnerability due to proliferation of sports betting. Individual players can easily influence prop bets (e.g., throwing a ball instead of a strike). Senate Investigation: Cruz launched an oversight inquiry via the Senate Commerce Committee. Letters sent to MLB and NBA requesting information on integrity measures. Concerns: Potential for corruption in college sports. Discussion on whether leagues can self-police or if Congress should intervene. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. The story of Jacob's sons is messy, painful, redemptive, and beautiful. It's the story of betrayal and forgiveness, grief and healing, famine and provision. But more than that, it's the story of how God takes a broken family and forms a people through whom He will bless the whole world. From the very beginning, God's heart has been to include the outsider and heal what's been fractured. This series invites us into that story—not just to watch it unfold, but to find ourselves in it. Because God is still using crooked sticks to draw straight lines—and to build His family today.
Live from Crooked Con, Dan Pfeiffer talks with Sarah Longwell, David Shor, Terrance Woodbury, and Carlos Odio about what the voters are telling us about what they're looking for in this unprecedented moment, how we can recapture the groups that moved away from Democrats last year, and how much should we pay attention to polling. Then, Governor Andy Beshear sits down with Alex Wagner to explain how he broke the rules, and how other Democrats can follow suit. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Live from Crooked Con, Jon Lovett talks to Hasan Piker, Symone Sanders Townsend, Tim Miller, and Jessica Tarlov about why Democrats are the party of humorless scolds, how they let that happen, and how the Republicans crackdown on free speech presents and opening for Democrats to be the fun, welcoming party again. Then, Sen. Chris Murphy joins Dan Pfeiffer to talk about the threats we face and why it's more important than ever for leaders to communicate directly with Americans. The 2024 election closed the book on the old way of thinking about political geography. Famously blue areas moved right. So did famously red ones. We need a new strategy that works as well in supposedly safe states like New Jersey as it does in tossups like North Carolina and Wisconsin. Alyssa Mastromonaco hosts Rep. Sarah McBride (D–DE), Rep. Janelle Bynum (D–OR), Anderson Clayton, chair of the North Carolina Democratic Party, and Ben Wikler, former chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party to talk about how we can fight our way back to power everywhere on the map. Live from Crooked Con, Tommy and Ben look back at the last year since Trump was re-elected and unpack the worst and most surprising moments of Trump 2.0 foreign policy, including the president's bogus claims that he's a “peacemaker,” the continuing horrors of Russia's war on Ukraine, the administration's incoherence on China, and the catastrophic gutting of USAID. Then the guys are joined by Representatives Yassamin Ansari and Ro Khanna to discuss the future of Democratic foreign policy. They talk about how the next generation of Democrats should lead on immigration, Israel, Iran, climate change, Venezuela, and more. Monsoon Voyagers follows the voyage of a single dhow (sailing vessel), the Crooked, along with its captain and crew, from Kuwait to port cities around the Persian Gulf and Western Indian Ocean, from 1924 to 1925. Through his account of the voyage, Fahad Ahmad Bishara unpacks a much broader history of circulation and exchange across the Arabian Sea in the time of empire. From their offices in India, Arabia, and East Africa, Gulf merchants utilized the technologies of colonial capitalism — banks, steamships, railroads, telegraphs, and more — to transform their own regional bazaar economy. In the process, they remade the Gulf itself. Drawing on the Crooked's first-person logbooks, along with letters, notes, and business accounts from a range of port cities, Monsoon Voyagers narrates the still-untold connected histories of the Gulf and Indian Ocean. The Gulf's past, it suggests, played out across the sea as much as it did the land. Monsoon Voyagers doesn't just tell a vivid, imaginative narrative—it teaches. Each port-of-call chapter can work as a stand-alone module. And the brief “Inscription” interludes double as turn-key primary-source labs—perfect for document analysis, quick mapping, and mini-quant work with weights, measures, and credit instruments. It invites undergraduates into a connected oceanic world and the big questions of world history, while graduate students get a method—how to read vernacular archives across scales and languages to design their own transregional, archive-driven projects. A quick heads-up: Traditional local musical interludes (see below for credits and links) will punctuate our voyage as chapter markers you can use to pause and reflect—as we sail from Kuwait to the Shatt al-Arab, then out across the Gulf to Oman, Karachi, Gujarat, Bombay, and the Malabar coast. We'll return via Muscat and Bahrain, dropping anchor once more in Kuwait. Music Credits and Links: Prologue: The Logbook1. KuwaitInscription: Debts2. The Shatt Al-ʿArabInscription: Freightage3. Episode 370: DJ BOOGIE BLIND "The Death of Originality in DJ Culture" This week on @RoadPodcast, the crew sits down with @BoogieBlind to talk about his Bronx roots, coming up with Lyrics to Go, and learning from Roc Raida (2:10). Blind shares how he chose DJing over basketball after seeing Roc Raida's success and reflects on the original “X-Men Rules” (9:10). He pays respect to Clark Kent, opens up about his battle DJ mentality, and talks about “protecting his energy” in an era where copying is normalized (12:10). Crooked and Blind discuss the “me against the world” mindset of battle DJs, how relationships change as you grow (15:16), and the difference between people's online personas and real-life character. Boogie calls today's scene “the most cut-and-paste generation of DJs” and addresses imitation, technology, and Serato's impact (26:05). They debate content vs. ability, give props to younger DJs pushing boundaries (24:01), and Blind shares his approach to sets: half battle DJ, half party rocker (32:01). He recalls playing @Shaboozey at Dante's Hi-Fi, discusses vinyl culture, and opens up about self-doubt, crowd control, and staying a fan of the craft (44:01). Blind also speaks on his party “Easily” (51:01), the mic game in the 2010s (1:00:01), his love for island music and production (1:13:01), and the crew's take on quick mixing (1:27:01).

From Jesus' humility, St. Paul draws implications for the Christian life. Christians put the salvation they have received into practice with fear and trembling, knowing that God works according to His good pleasure in Christ. Rather than grumbling as the ancient Israelites, Christians are to live as God's children and reflect the light of Christ into the darkness of the world. St. Paul's joy over the Philippians holding fast to the Word of God remains strong, whether his imprisonment ends with his death or his release. Rev. Dr. Martin Dressler, pastor at Salem Lutheran Church and School in Black Jack, MO, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Philippians 2:12-18. To learn more about Salem Lutheran, visit salembjmo.org. “Letters from Prison” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that studies Philippians, Colossians, and Philemon. Even when Paul was imprisoned for the sake of Christ, the Word of God remained unbound. The apostle's letters from prison still fill us with the same joy that his chains could never silence. Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God's Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen. Submit comments or questions to: listener@kfuo.org
Episode 369: DJ NICK DAVIS "How a Midwest DJ Is Breaking Into Bigger Markets" This week on @RoadPodcast, the crew chops it up with Kansas City's @djnickdavis. They reflect on meeting Nick early in his journey and stress how crucial it was to travel and experience other DJ scenes at a young age (00:55). The conversation shifts to the Midwest nightlife explosion, with cities like Wichita and Salt Lake City hosting incredible parties (06:50), and Nick breaks down how he's built his out-of-town bookings through word-of-mouth and collaborations with Salt Lake City's finest @bangarangthedj (10:04). He shares the origin story of his party Goodies and how it became a way to bring major DJs to KC who otherwise wouldn't have come. Nick also reveals how he approaches travel gigs, opens up about wild KC “bottle wars,” and partying with Chiefs players like Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Patrick Mahomes (19:54), as well as how a single Chiefs game can shift the entire nightlife energy. Crooked dives into the KC sound with shoutouts to Kstylis and Tech N9ne (21:11), while Nick discusses the differences between KC and St. Louis artists (31:10) and the Bay Area's influence on Kansas City's culture (34:20). He opens up about doing everything himself to build Goodies (38:01), and the crew speaks on the risks and sacrifices they've all made to pursue DJing full-time (45:01). Later, Nick reflects on the internal conflict of balancing his identity as a solo artist vs. his event brand (1:05:01), and the group talks about work-life balance, delegation, and building long-term movements rooted in community and humility (1:14:52). Toward the end, Nick shares where he sees himself in five years, speaks on launching his Patreon, and vents about what grinds his gears (1:17:01). The episode wraps with a conversation about DJ goals, DMC dreams (1:21:05), viral routines from legends like @skratchbastid and @trayze (1:32:02), and why Nick hates the word “content”—even while feeding the algorithm (1:33:02).
Listener Robert Brown sent us a photo of a robin with a crooked beak and we finally get through to Elizabeth Carney, who has questions about groups of crows on a beach and sandhoppers.

Pretty nice First Amendment you've got there. Would be a shame if something were to happen to it. Trump's FCC comes for Jimmy Kimmel, and Disney rolls out the red carpet. Michaela Watkins and Colton Dunn set their brains to “rot” to talk Hunting Wives, James Gandolfini, political acceptance speeches, and how drunk our Drunk Histories really got. Colton loses his shoes, but we all win, with a rousing game of Was I In This?, and we give our aging faves their flowers now, before they're pushing up daisies.Get tickets to LOLI NYC & more upcoming shows at Crooked.com/events.Get tickets to CROOKED CON November 6-7 in Washington, D.C at crookedcon.com.For a closed-captioned version of this episode, click here. Caving to a pressure campaign from Donald Trump's FCC, Disney pulls Jimmy Kimmel's show off the air. Tensions rise in the wake of Charlie Kirk's killing, as Trump and his allies blame the left before a suspect is in custody. Minnesota Rep. This week, Trump dodges the crypt and rakes in the crypto. Congress comes down with a bad case of RFK Jr., and the Epstein survivors have Jeffrey's old pals in a cold sweat. A die-hard Latino MAGA voter (Oscar Nuñez) stops by to explain why, despite all evidence, sí Trump puede. Oscar and Alex Borstein go on the record to guess all the news that's fit to print.
