This choice was influenced by a shifting political tide and the support of powerful figures like Pompey, who wanted a symbolic cleanup of government corruption. Verres was a well-connected billionaire and a former follower of the dictator Sulla, making the prosecution a high-risk endeavor for Cicero. Cicero positioned himself as a crusading outsider fighting against a "crooked establishment" to protect the interests of the Roman people. By taking on this case, Cicero aimed to prove that he could challenge the most entrenched members of the Senate. So Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is out there saying, “Italy and I never beg.” Strong line. Very cinematic. You can almost hear the orchestral music and see the wind machine doing its thing.But then comes the part that makes you tilt your head like a confused newsroom intern: the suggestion that the leader of the United States shows up, and somehow there's resistance to the photo op. With Donald Trump.Now pause right there. Because in today's political ecosystem, Trump could walk into a room, solve a Rubik's Cube blindfolded, donate a million dollars to charity, and the headline would still somehow be: “Man With Opinions Causes Mild Atmospheric Disturbance.”So when Meloni says she doesn't understand why the President behaves this way toward allies, and that it's “a pity he doesn't show the same determination with the enemies of the West,” I have questions. Not rhetorical ones. Real ones. The kind that come with raised eyebrows and a slow sip of coffee.First, “behaves this way” is doing a lot of emotional lifting there. That phrase is like a diplomatic suitcase stuffed with assumptions, interpretations, and at least three editorial board meetings.Because what exactly is the behavior?Is it negotiating aggressively? Is it not doing the usual global handshake ballet where everyone agrees on everything in public and contradicts it in private? Or is it simply that Trump doesn't perform the “everyone is my best friend” theater that global politics has quietly standardized?And this is where the irony starts doing gymnastics.We're told constantly that Trump is unpredictable, brash, difficult. Yet somehow he's also the only president who manages to trigger simultaneous confusion and moral disappointment across continents for not behaving like a polite bureaucratic suggestion box.Meanwhile, the idea that leaders might not always be thrilled about photo ops with him gets treated like breaking news. As if international diplomacy is supposed to be a yearbook signing session where everyone writes, “Stay cool, best ally ever.”But let's step back into Meloni's critique: why not show the same determination with the enemies of the West?That's the part that sounds noble until you realize the assumption baked inside it. It assumes everyone agrees on who the enemies are, how you “show determination,” and what counts as effective action versus performative action.Because in modern geopolitics, “determination” can mean anything from sanctions, to speeches, to carefully worded statements that are strong enough to trend on social media but soft enough to survive translation.So here's the quiet question underneath all of it: are we talking about real policy disagreement, or are we talking about style disagreement dressed up as moral clarity?Because style is where things get interesting.Trump operates like a geopolitical highlighter. He doesn't just underline the sentence, he circles it three times and writes “FIX THIS” in the margin. That's not subtle. That's not delicate. But it is unmistakable.And unmistakable is something global politics often pretends it doesn't need, while secretly relying on it when things get messy.Now add the media layer, and the whole thing becomes a hall of mirrors with press passes.One leader says something. Another reacts. A third interprets the reaction. Then analysts interpret the interpretation. And somewhere in there, the original sentence has evolved into something that barely resembles its birth certificate.So when headlines suggest tension, disagreement, or “pity,” what I hear is something simpler: different expectations colliding in a very public room with very expensive lighting.And let's be honest, photo politics matters more than people admit. A picture with a world leader is no longer just a picture. It's a signal. Republican U.S. Senate candidates Andy Barr and Daniel Cameron make last‑minute campaign stops across Kentucky as the primary approaches, Louisville city leaders detail plans for nearly $1 billion in new state funding, a longtime member of the Kentucky General Assembly passes away, and a Laurel County neighborhood devastated by last year's deadly tornado continues its path toward recovery.

The South Carolina Supreme Court didn't split on this. All five justices agreed — Becky Hill's comments to the jury during Alex Murdaugh's murder trial were improper enough to reverse the conviction. The court found Hill told jurors not to be fooled by defense evidence, to watch Murdaugh's body language, and that deliberations shouldn't take long. Her motive, according to the ruling: a book deal that needed a guilty verdict to sell. Hill pled guilty to perjury in December 2025 for lying about her actions under oath.The justices also took apart former Chief Justice Jean Toal's handling of the new trial motion. Toal applied the wrong legal standard, putting the burden on Murdaugh instead of requiring the State to prove the comments couldn't have influenced the verdict. The court said the State failed that test. Toal also improperly questioned individual jurors about whether the Clerk's statements changed their votes — a direct violation of jury deliberation protections.The ruling sets boundaries for retrial. Prosecutors spent twelve-plus hours on financial crimes evidence the first time around. The court called it excessive and ordered any future trial to limit that material to evidence directly tied to the motive theory. AG Alan Wilson says the State will retry. Murdaugh remains incarcerated on his financial convictions.At the same time, our ongoing interview with Blanca Simpson — the Murdaugh family's housekeeper for fifteen years — continues to surface details the first investigation apparently had no interest in pursuing.
