Reflections of a DJ

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 17, 2025 181:57

Episode 372: "2025 Wrap-Up” This week on @RoadPodcast we're joined by @Kazi, @Shwcase and @DJMarcoPenta to close out 2025 with a full wrap up of what actually mattered this year, breaking down Top 5 Club Bangers before diving into why songs are taking longer to connect, the lack of label support, and whether release dates should move back to Tuesdays so audiences can learn records before the weekend (14:13). The crew gives @Kehlani her flowers and talks about the success of “Folded” (19:33), then unpacks how rappers who once made club hits are now making gym or car music, GRWM and ‘vibey' records, why “Whim Whammiee” feels like a novelty song, and how labels treat these tracks like penny stocks for quick money (31:10). A standout conversation follows on whether NYC DJs play edits or originals, genre flexibility in New York and what actually makes an edit better than the original (41:08). This leads into the Top 5 Edits (41:20) and a discussion on edit oversaturation after viral moments and why DJs lean on edits before developing their own style (51:32). The crew then reveals their Top 5 Editors of 2025 (1:23:01) and moves into Top 3 Overrated Tracks (1:39:40). The episode continues with Top 3 Artists (2:01:01), a wider Top Artists of 2025 conversation featuring Bad Bunny jokes, Drake talk, Beyonce's unmatched versatility for DJs, and why legacy artists remain essential in 2025, ending with Crooked's top three (2:18:03). They also cover Top 3 Back in Rotation (2:16:01), Crooked's stories from @Moochie's party at @RecordRoom in New York and why it stood out (2:47:00), Top Live DJ Sets (2:33:01), Favorite Moments from the year (2:53:01), and the most valuable lessons learned heading into 2026 (3:03:01). This episode is sponsored by @SoundCollectiveNYC, an industry-leading music school, musical space and community located in downtown Manhattan for aspiring DJ's, Producers, Musicians and more. You might know Jon Lovett as the host of the podcast Lovett or Leave It or as one of the hosts of the influential Pod Save America show. On those shows, Jon and others talk about big events in politics and try to make sense of it all. Which is hard. But it turns out that America itself, the very Constitution of this nation, may have a fatal flaw it in it, a loophole that could be activated and instantly make it a totalitarian country (or, depending on how you see things, even more so). It's a loophole, Jon Lovett tells us, first brought up by Kurt Gödel, last name pronounced like the ladies' undergarment. He was an influential mathematician and logician from Eastern Europe who found the loophole while studying for his citizenship test. He passed but, crucially, never revealed the loophole even though his pal Albert Einstein wanted him to. And then Gödel died in 1978, secret still safe. So you'll be able to sleep safe.Hey Sleepy Heads, is there anyone whose voice you'd like to drift off to, or do you have suggestions on things we could do to aid your slumber?Email us at: sleepwithcelebs@maximumfun.org.Follow the Show on:Instagram @sleepwcelebsBluesky @sleepwithcelebsTikTok @SleepWithCelebsJohn is on Bluesky @JohnMoeJohn's acclaimed, best-selling memoir, The Hilarious World of Depression, is now available in paperback._________________________________________________________________________Join | Maximum FunIf you like one or more shows on MaxFun, and you value independent artists being able to do their thing, you're the perfect person to become a MaxFun monthly member.

Start with honesty: none of us has a spotless record, and pretending we do only delays the obedience God asks of us today. We dig into the parable of the two sons to show why repentance is measured by action, not memory, and we highlight Rahab's story as a powerful reminder that God writes redemption into the lives of imperfect people who choose faithfulness now. From there, we turn to Titus 2 and get practical about the virtues that steady a home and strengthen a community. Temperance, dignity, sensible speech, and the work of teaching what is good give our faith credibility. Revelation 19 then lifts our eyes, reminding us that the wedding feast of the Lamb and the triumph of the Rider called Faithful and True are not abstract theology but the anchor for perseverance and hope when the world feels hostile and disordered. We round out the conversation with Psalm 147's comfort for the brokenhearted, Proverbs 31's sober counsel to leaders, and a Medal of Honor spotlight on Sylvester Bonnafon Jr. History speaks, too: we read FDR's Pearl Harbor address and Harry Truman's 1949 Christmas message, drawing lessons about courage, clarity, peace, and service. Through Scripture and history, we argue for a life that names evil, loves neighbors, and trusts God for victory. If this resonates, share it with a friend, leave a review, and subscribe so you won't miss what's next. Proverbs 17:20–24 contrasts the inward distortion of the wicked with the steady discernment of the wise. A perverse heart finds no good, and a deceitful tongue falls into trouble. Foolish children become grief to their parents; a merry heart strengthens like good medicine, while a broken spirit dries up the bones. The wicked take bribes in secret, but understanding sets wise eyes toward the right path, while the fool's gaze wanders to the ends of the earth. In today's Morning Manna, Rick Wiles and Doc Burkhart explore how inner character shapes destiny, how joy nourishes life, and how wisdom fixes its eyes on the way that leads home. Remember when he swore up and down he had "direct evidence" of Trump-Russia collusion? Turns out, it was about as real as a Hollywood set: all smoke, mirrors, and a script written by his own fever dreams. The House censured him for it in 2023, called him out for peddling fairy tales that wasted millions in taxpayer dollars and turned our intelligence community into a bad spy novel. But hey, in Democrat land, lying isn't a bug—it's the operating system.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The story of Jacob's sons is messy, painful, redemptive, and beautiful. It's the story of betrayal and forgiveness, grief and healing, famine and provision. But more than that, it's the story of how God takes a broken family and forms a people through whom He will bless the whole world. From the very beginning, God's heart has been to include the outsider and heal what's been fractured. This series invites us into that story—not just to watch it unfold, but to find ourselves in it. Because God is still using crooked sticks to draw straight lines—and to build His family today.

1. Texas Declares Muslim Brotherhood & CARE as Terrorist Organizations Action Taken: Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a proclamation designating the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CARE) as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations. Implications: These groups are now prohibited from acquiring real property in Texas. Governor’s Statement: Abbott cited their alleged goals of imposing Sharia law and supporting terrorism globally. Background: CARE is described as a domestic organization linked to Hamas and implicated in supporting terrorism. The Muslim Brotherhood is portrayed as an umbrella group with affiliates like Hamas. Federal Context: Senator Cruz has pushed for federal designation for over a decade. Legislative efforts have faced resistance from State Department bureaucrats. Cruz introduced bipartisan legislation with Senator John Fetterman to designate affiliates first, then the global organization. Political Dynamics: Discussion of partisan challenges and rare bipartisan cooperation. Praise for Fetterman’s independence and criticism of Democratic Party’s internal politics. 2. Gambling Crisis in Professional Sports Issue: Widespread corruption linked to prop bets (bets on specific game events rather than outcomes). Examples: NBA and MLB scandals involving players and coaches fixing aspects of games. Detailed case: Cleveland Guardians pitchers allegedly manipulated pitches for betting gains, earning hundreds of thousands of dollars. Risks: Increased vulnerability due to proliferation of sports betting. Individual players can easily influence prop bets (e.g., throwing a ball instead of a strike). Senate Investigation: Cruz launched an oversight inquiry via the Senate Commerce Committee. Letters sent to MLB and NBA requesting information on integrity measures. Concerns: Potential for corruption in college sports. Discussion on whether leagues can self-police or if Congress should intervene. Please Hit Subscribe to this podcast Right Now. Monsoon Voyagers follows the voyage of a single dhow (sailing vessel), the Crooked, along with its captain and crew, from Kuwait to port cities around the Persian Gulf and Western Indian Ocean, from 1924 to 1925. Through his account of the voyage, Fahad Ahmad Bishara unpacks a much broader history of circulation and exchange across the Arabian Sea in the time of empire. From their offices in India, Arabia, and East Africa, Gulf merchants utilized the technologies of colonial capitalism — banks, steamships, railroads, telegraphs, and more — to transform their own regional bazaar economy. In the process, they remade the Gulf itself. Drawing on the Crooked's first-person logbooks, along with letters, notes, and business accounts from a range of port cities, Monsoon Voyagers narrates the still-untold connected histories of the Gulf and Indian Ocean. The Gulf's past, it suggests, played out across the sea as much as it did the land. Monsoon Voyagers doesn't just tell a vivid, imaginative narrative—it teaches. Each port-of-call chapter can work as a stand-alone module. And the brief “Inscription” interludes double as turn-key primary-source labs—perfect for document analysis, quick mapping, and mini-quant work with weights, measures, and credit instruments. It invites undergraduates into a connected oceanic world and the big questions of world history, while graduate students get a method—how to read vernacular archives across scales and languages to design their own transregional, archive-driven projects. Episode 370: DJ BOOGIE BLIND "The Death of Originality in DJ Culture" This week on @RoadPodcast, the crew sits down with @BoogieBlind to talk about his Bronx roots, coming up with Lyrics to Go, and learning from Roc Raida (2:10). Blind shares how he chose DJing over basketball after seeing Roc Raida's success and reflects on the original “X-Men Rules” (9:10). He pays respect to Clark Kent, opens up about his battle DJ mentality, and talks about “protecting his energy” in an era where copying is normalized (12:10). Crooked and Blind discuss the “me against the world” mindset of battle DJs, how relationships change as you grow (15:16), and the difference between people's online personas and real-life character. Boogie calls today's scene “the most cut-and-paste generation of DJs” and addresses imitation, technology, and Serato's impact (26:05). They debate content vs. ability, give props to younger DJs pushing boundaries (24:01), and Blind shares his approach to sets: half battle DJ, half party rocker (32:01). He recalls playing @Shaboozey at Dante's Hi-Fi, discusses vinyl culture, and opens up about self-doubt, crowd control, and staying a fan of the craft (44:01). Blind also speaks on his party “Easily” (51:01), the mic game in the 2010s (1:00:01), his love for island music and production (1:13:01), and the crew's take on quick mixing (1:27:01).
