Brooke is asking for help to save her sister, Alyssa’s life. When Alyssa was 15, she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder called polyglandular autoimmune disorder type one. This autoimmune disorder contains multiple things such as Addison’s disease, ovarian failure, hypoparathyroidism, and hypothyroidism. When Alyssa was first diagnosed she almost lost her life... We thought it was her nerve and she had multiple root canals. When Alyssa was finally diagnosed with her autoimmune disorder, her calcium was so low the doctor came in looking for a dead body... after she was diagnosed, Alyssa went through so many different trials such as almost losing her life multiple times due to trying to figure out her medication, stress, and a doctor overdosing her on medication trying to help her.  Ever since then, Alyssa has battled with keeping her body healthy ever since that day.  Everything was going good until Alyssa started showing signs of being intoxicated but she wasn’t drinking. As time went on, Alyssa’s symptoms became stronger. To the point that Alyssa was sleeping all the time. When she would wake, she would be inebriated. it got to the point in Alyssa’s health where we didn’t know what was going on. We didn’t know if she was going to wake up in the morning when she would go to sleep. There were multiple times when I have come into Alyssa’s room to find her lips blue and her face pale. I remember going over to her side and having to rub her chest to make sure she was alive.Last year, Alyssa was diagnosed with auto-brewery syndrome. Alyssa’s doctors have attempted to treat it with multiple different medications, but have yet to have much luck. Alyssa’s doctors are now recommending more aggressive medications to help her. Alyssa is most likely going to have to travel to the Mayo Clinic, or to another doctor in New York to get this treatment.

Being fed and fearless is more than just nourishing and healing your body, it’s about learning to listen to and trust it. Alyssa Chang joins me to talk about how we can all learn to befriend our bodies in order to have a better, healthier relationship with it. Because sometimes, we have to think of our body as not a part of ourselves, but a separate entity that’s connected to us, that we can speak to, listen to, and learn from.   BEFRIENDING YOUR BODY Alyssa explains how over the years she has trained herself to check-in with her body. Coming from a very athletic background, competitive volleyball followed by shape competitions, she quite literally put her body through the mill. After so long restricting and restraining her eating habits, spending obsessive hours at the gym, and ignoring what her body actually wants and needs, it was a process that didn’t take place overnight. When Alyssa first stopped her intensive regime, she, and actually many of my private clients, felt overwhelmed and exhausted in her rest. At first, she thought this was because she had more energy training, but she’s learned it was actually because her body was living in a state of fight or flight, and when she finally let it rest, the constant adrenaline had a chance to relax. Alyssa now works with her clients to define their values before they embark on any new health and fitness journey. If your regimen doesn’t align with your true core values, then why are you doing it? Another point Alyssa makes sure to emphasize when it comes to befriending your body is learning how to breathe properly. When you’re breathing deeply and regularly, incorporating an appropriate movement therapy, your body will feel more in alignment. And more than this, your body won’t crave comfort foods the way it does when you’re in a constant state of stress. If you find that you’re binging on a box of cookies at night time, it’s easy to fall into a cycle where you’ll be “good” all day the next day. But being “good” all day usually leads to undereating. Your body will then demand you make up the calories you’ve lost throughout the day, and that’s where the cookies come in. You need to break this cycle by nourishing your body properly throughout the entire day. What are you saying no to so that you can say yes to your health and fitness goals? How do you check-in with your body on a daily basis? When’s the last time you’ve noticed the way you’re breathing? Let us know on the comments on the episode page!   Got a question you’d love to hear me answer on the show? Leave me a voice message here!   In This Episode Why you need to listen to and trust your body How you can train yourself to check-in with your body on how it’s feeling Why you might feel overwhelmed and exhausted after doing some intense self-work How defining your values has a big impact on your fitness and health journey What your breathing should actually look like for optimal health How breathing and movement therapy can change what foods you’re craving How restrictive eating can lead to a cyclical pattern of overeating or binging   Quotes “It always comes down to, ‘well does it really align to what matters to you and does this provide your life meaning?’” (22:44) “You want to think about breathing fully, deeply, efficient breaths as like actually giving your internal organs a little massage.” (29:10) “I honestly feel like there will be intuitive responses that we will do as a deeply rooted need to keep us alive. So sometimes being on a very restrictive plan and falling off every so often is our body reaching a certain threshold of not being able to function anymore.” (37:15)   Links Find Alyssa Chang Online Follow Alyssa Chang on Instagram | Facebook | Pinterest | YouTube  Running an online health business? A little side note here — but they aren’t happy with the IG algorithm changes either! ON TODAY’S EPISODE: How Laura got her start in calligraphy and how her love for hand lettering turned into a business When Alyssa joined her sister at Laura Hooper Calligraphy and how she defined her role How having people on her team handling very specific tasks frees Laura up to focus on the creative side of the business The importance of investing in your business & outsourcing when possible What led to the diversity of Laura Hooper Calligraphy’s product offerings and how they determined what direction to go in The start of their calligraphy workshops & why they decided to “train the competition” The custom work they are doing The systems & boundaries they have in place to standardize their custom work The strategies they use to engage with their followers on social media Laura & Alyssa’s thoughts on the Instagram algorithm How they measure conversions from Instagram What’s coming up next for Laura Hooper Calligraphy KEY TAKE-AWAYS: “I'm very logistical and Laura is very artistic. You could say that it was a good little marriage of skills.” - Alyssa Bobbett “I've never been afraid to take risks and step out and try something new. I like to look at what we're doing, what's working, what isn't working and what do we need to change.” - Laura Hooper Leader “You could spend a week researching something and figuring it out and doing it, but think of all the other ways that you could put your actual skills to use during that week if you outsource something.” - Alyssa Bobbett “We kind of let the people tell us what direction to go in. We listen to what our clients or potential clients are asking for.” - Laura Hooper Leader “People talk about the market being so saturated, which it is, but at the same time it allows you to kind of streamline what you want to do.” - Alyssa Bobbett “There's an endless number of weddings. There's an endless number of greeting cards at Paper Source or wherever. There's plenty of work to go around.” - Alyssa Bobbett “I want everyone to be happy, and that's just not 100% feasible. You have to have policies or you're just going to be miserable all the time. You need to enforce them or else people walk all over you.” - Laura Hooper Leader “We like to use our social media as an extension of our brand.” - Alyssa Bobbett “We don't consider followers or likes to be the goal. We consider conversions to be the goal.” - Alyssa Bobbett “We're not always trying to sell to our followers. We want people to follow because it's beautiful, but we don't want them to feel like we're just using them to make money.” - Laura Hooper Leader LINKSWebsite: http://lhcalligraphy.com Facebook:  http://facebook.com/lhcalligraphy Instagram: http://instagram.com/lhcalligraphy Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/lhcalligraphy Twitter:  http://twitter.com/lhcalligraphy JOIN THE TSBC FAMILY:   Do you want to scale your business and add new revenue streams?  Are you ready to get a handle on your cash flow and tuck money away for retirement?     Maybe you are interested in increasing your visibility and fine-tuning your marketing outreach?  Perhaps you have a team that you want to nurture or need help building your team?   Our newest on demand program, Paper Camp+ can help you with all of these things and more.  The program includes 5 keynote presentations and 2 panels from a wide range of business experts.  You can watch what you need, when you need it most and revisit the videos as often as you’d like.   This course was built for anyone running a product based business, and extends way beyond the paper industry.  Enroll at www.tradeshowcamp.com/pcplus! Alyssa Wright is an artist, activist and capacity building expert. An accomplished facilitator and consultant, Alyssa works with organizations from East Africa to New England, all focused on powerfully creating social change, especially for women & children. A Co-Founder of the Massachusetts-based Recovery Theatre and a passionate advocate for the arts, Alyssa believes that when we place dignity and love at the forefront of our change-making efforts, there is nothing that we cannot accomplish together on this Earth. Playing Small Moment Because she didn’t feel that she had anything intellectual, philosophical or academic to say, Alyssa felt that her story wouldn’t necessarily help others and didn’t see the importance in sharing it. Alyssa had assumed that everyone experienced the same parental struggles that she had in her youth and that her story was just too common. Ultimately, she underestimated the significance of how she came to be who she was as a person. The Wake Up Call In July 2015, Alyssa had the opportunity to work with women and girls in East Africa with Heshima Kenya, a refugee organization. On her flight to Africa, Alyssa was filled with doubts and felt undeserving of the amazing opportunities that awaited her until she received an encouraging text from a caring friend. Once Alyssa arrived at the safe house, she was greeted by all of the girls, holding their beautiful children. The group took turns sharing their talents and when Alyssa was asked to share hers, she realized that her artistry made her feel more herself than she ever had. Alyssa was inspired and knew how she could make a difference. Style of Leadership Alyssa sees her leadership style as more of a mentorship that becomes kinship that becomes a legacy of doing the right thing. When Alyssa started in the world of philanthropy, she asked a more experienced peer how she stayed motivated when it didn’t seem they were moving the needle at all. The woman replied that they were in fact moving the needle, and to pay attention to the young people that were showing up. Those young people are what keep the movement going. With Alyssa’s leadership, it’s more than just inspiring a young person to work with her, it is making an investment in that person as a whole and making sure they are enjoying the progress, not just the goal. What Are You Excited About? Since last summer, Alyssa has been working with Tree Sisters, which has been an inspiring leadership journey for her. One of the projects they are working on that Alyssa is really excited to be a part of is a global philanthropic strategy that unearths feminine leadership within different communities while also repairing the nature around us. Current Business Challenge After working for Raising Change for seven years, Alyssa became partner and just recently received a certificate to further her leadership in her field. After building a new consulting business, Alyssa is challenged by finding her own identity and voice in an that same industry as a leader and not just an employee.
