If you're not getting your period, it's easy to think that it's not a big problem. However, a missing period is likely a sign that you're doing things that are not serving you and potentially keeping you from living the life you want. This is particularly the case with hypothalamic amenorrhea (HA). Today's guest shares her perspective on why this is the case for many women and what they can do about it. Whether or not you have HA, if you're a woman with goals and the way you eat and exercise impacts those, this episode is a must-listen! About Dani Sheriff Dani Sheriff is a period recovery coach for women with hypothalamic amenorrhea, a Fertility Awareness Certified Practitioner, and is studying to be a Functional Nutrition Counselor. She's the host of The Hypothalamic Amenorrhea Podcast and the creator of The HA Society, a community for women who want to get their period back and then optimize it. Her mission is to free up mental space for those stuck in the diet-hard mindset so that they can do their life's greatest work. Dani is Australian-born but lives in Austin Texas with her husband Jake, baby girl Zara, and German Shepherd Jasmine. What Can Interrupt Your Cycle and Why it Matters Although you can survive without a menstrual cycle, it is still very important for your health. Dani explains how your cycle can be interrupted by HA, especially given stress from societal pressures. The ironic truth is that, by working out and dieting too hard to fit a certain image, you can be doing real harm to your health. Dani describes that, while training as an athlete, this began affecting her. Although she was told by some health experts that this was not a big deal, she began to see just how it was impacting her wellbeing. That's when Dani decided to learn more about HA and devote herself to helping women like her overcome it. The Importance of a Well-Integrated Life Dani goes on to talk about how not striving for “perfection” can actually help you achieve your goals in the end. By trying to make the perfect meal or hit every workout goal, you're missing the point. Instead, simply using what you know about health and nutrition to best serve your needs at the moment will lead to more sustainable results without added stress. When there's only so much stress that we can handle, it's crucial not to put more on your plate than necessary. If you focus too much on what doesn't really matter, you'll overload yourself and your health will suffer. By focusing on what's best for your mental health as well as your physical welfare, your overall wellbeing will surely improve. Would you describe yourself as a perfectionist? How has that impacted your health? Leave a comment on the episode page! They are different things.” [8:28] “There are opportunities waiting that women are not taking up because they're too focused on eating as little as possible and getting as many workouts as they possibly can… It's a rabbit hole we go down and they're not looking up from it and asking where else they can add value to the world.” [20:58] “Health and wellness was never meant to be the goal of our life. It was meant to be something that allows us to pursue the goals of our life.” [23:32] “You are one hundred percent capable of living so much bigger than you are right now and playing so much of a bigger game. Insider's Secrets to the Hiring Nightmare Episode #396 with Deena Meldgin & Courtney Dalton There's nothing more important than having the right people around you. But the challenge is finding those right people. There are a few things you need to do before you even think about hiring, and Kirk Behrendt brings in two ACT coaches, Deena Meldgin and Courtney Dalton, to share their secrets to attracting and keeping the best team members. Hiring can be a nightmare — and it doesn't have to be! For the best tips on hiring and to feel better about the hiring process, listen to Episode 396 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: Invest in your current team members. Find alternatives before you think about hiring. Core values are essential for successful hiring. Your favorite people care about the same things as you. Highlight core values in ads to attract the right people. Lean into your team for the hiring process. Quotes: “It all leads back to core values and making sure that you have an established vision before you even start the hiring process.” (4:31—4:37) “There was a big issue with a team member, and I kept saying, ‘The issue is that they're not a good core values fit.' And I kept getting brushed off until it hit them in the face that, ‘Yeah, you're right. They're not a bad person; they're just not a great fit for the direction the practice is going, and for the belief that the practice has, and how it wants to move forward.' So, all roads lead back to core values.” (5:24—5:48) “Another way to really attract people that align with your values is to really call it out in your ad, ‘Here's what we represent.' I absolutely love that, because I think that your best team members, or the best team members in dentistry, they have a job. They have a position right now. Right? And they're looking for something else because of a cultural change or a leadership change. And so, if our ads stand out and share what we represent, we're more likely to attract people who align with those values.” (11:50—12:21) “[Get] creative with putting out — even in our social media — like, how can we continue to attract people who are excited about our values, excited about who we are? People aren't looking for an ad that talks about all of their responsibilities. They're looking for something that stands out. So, go into it as if you're on the other end. What's going to stand out? Even ask some of your team members. Maybe you're looking for a hygienist. As a hygienist, what would stand out to you? What are some things that you would like to see in order to click that button and apply?” (17:14—17:48) “If at all possible, if we can avoid the hiring crisis right now, because everyone's in it and everybody's feeling it, is there an alternative within who we have to get everybody realigned? Do we really have to hire? Is the issue that someone wants to leave who is unhappy? Can we have more frequent check-ins with that team member and get back in alignment? Will that solve the problem? Is it on the clinical end or the admin end? It's so easy to say, ‘Okay, we'll terminate, and we'll stop this working relationship.' But is that the easiest thing right now? No. There's not a whole lot of bite. So, maybe, really, the answer is more internal than external.” (18:00—18:43) “Sometimes, tapping into your own team who already does align with how you think and your core values, that's one of the best assets that you can tap into, is to network through them. If they are a good fit with you, they probably know people who are a good fit with them and inherently would be a likely good fit for you. And if you lean into your team when you do have those people come in, ask them their opinion. If your team is really strong and your team feels like this wouldn't be a good fit, they're probably right. If they love that person, even if they do know that person, or they don't, and they say, ‘Yes! We would love to work with them,' listen to your team....
It's likely that you have nutritional deficiencies even if you're very intentional and informed about your diet. This is especially the case for expecting mothers. Today's guest is here to explain some lesser-known, but very important, considerations about prenatal nutrition. About Julie Sawaya Julie Sawaya is a co-founder of Needed along with Ryan Woodbury, a perinatal nutrition company focused on optimal nourishment before, during, and after pregnancy. As fellow nutrition nerds and mamas-to-be, they were shocked to realize that they were super deficient in key prenatal nutrients. They dug into the research and realized they were far from alone. Most prenatal vitamins are designed to meet the bare minimum needs, leaving mama deficient after giving so much to grow a healthy baby. So, Julia and Ryan started Needed to meet their needs and that of every woman before, during, and after pregnancy. Locating Quality Prenatal Supplements Julie describes how she vets the many ingredients for her supplements. It has taken years of research and partnership with perinatal nutritionists. This has often meant going beyond existing research and guidelines to create a unique product. Julie recommends looking for supplements that have nutrient forms that your body can best utilize. That often means ones with the most active form of the ingredient. To find these, Julie looks for forms of nutrients as they exist in nature to support the mechanisms by which the body processes them. If you find these in the dosages that best support your needs (which are pretty high for prenatal women), you'll know you have a good supplement. Taking Care of Yourself to Support Your Pregnancy Beyond supplementation, Julie sees her mission as empowering women with information. There's a lot on your mind as you prepare for and go through pregnancy. The more you know, the better you'll be able to contend with all that's going on in your and your baby's body. She also stresses the importance of self-care. Ultimately, prenatal vitamins are for your health as much as they are for the baby. That's why taking vitamins, even before conception, will help ensure that you start out with the nutrient reserves you'll both need from the beginning. Even after the pregnancy, you'll want to keep taking those nutrients. Julie explains why continuing supplementation for a while after the baby is born will help rebuild much-needed stores of nutrients. How has nutrition played a role in your pregnancy journey? Leave a comment on the episode page! In This Episode What led Julie to form a prenatal supplement brand [5:00] How Julie determines the best formulations for her supplements [10:20] What to look for when searching for the best prenatal supplement for you [15:10] The important distinction between folic acid and methyl folate [22:15] Education and self-care as empowerment for expecting mothers [28:00] The importance of taking prenatals after pregnancy [32:15] How supplements for men can help support conception [43:30] Quotes “It really doesn't matter if you're eating as balanced as you can; it's just a function of our modern food system that food alone is not cutting it and that prenatal vitamins are designed to fill in the minimum gaps, not to set women up for optimal health.” [7:58] “Looking to nature, as well as to science, as well as to in-practice experience, is really important.” [25:35] “What you do during pregnancy doesn't have to be your new normal but, it can be something to focus on.” [39:40] Review Fed and Fearless on Apple Podcasts! Kris welcomes Early Education pioneer Carol Levins to the show. Carol created a school from nothing and ended up with a business that now has 14 locations, serving over 3,500 children. Carol talks about how a passion for learning sparked her path in education, how she crafted her teaching positions to elevate her teachers and keep them for 20‒35 years, how her door to door marketing led her to get to know the families on a personal level, and her advice for exiting a business. [33:40] The most important thing is to understand what your mission statement is. For Carol, it's to provide the highest quality early childhood educational program available. Knowing how to train and fuel yourself appropriately, especially as a female athlete, goes way beyond just lifting weights. Whatever other pursuits you enjoy also require the knowledge and understanding necessary to train for your body's unique needs. Key Takeaways If You Want to Improve Your Cycling, You Should: Work to change your mindset and educate yourself about the right training practices for your body and age Ensure that you are fueling your body properly to have the energy you need to feel and train better Work with a coach to keep muscles on your skeleton while pushing the pedals properly and mobilizing fat Badass Bosses on Bikes With Marissa Axell Marissa Axell is a cyclist and cyclist coach who has dedicated her work to teaching women cyclists how to be badass bosses on their bikes. She helps women understand not just the skill but also the nutrition, recovery, and training that works well for female cyclists at every age. Disappointed by the lack of information and representation in the female cycling work, Marissa took her years of experience and created a space and program that, frankly, I wish I had known 20 years ago when I first got onto a bike. Chasing Quality, Not Fatigue We have been conditioned for years that we have to be on every adventure and embody the all-or-nothing mentality. While Marissa is an advocate for high-intensity interval training, she has framed it in a way that does not set your body to chase fatigue but instead chase quality. Focusing on your exercise quality and intensity will do more for your fitness, physiology, weight, and long slow distance effects than going above your threshold ever will. As we age, we have to remember to change our mindsets and training practices to best serve our here and now bodies in a way that still delivers the results we expect. Changing the Mindset of Women Athletes It has only been in the last five or so years that we have started to understand how women of different ages need to train. We are cyclical beings which means that we need to match our training to the cycles of our bodies and our lives to see improvement. Fueling, recovery, and intensity are some of the most important factors for making long-term and sustainable fitness goals. While it is natural to want to see rapid change and be told what to do, it is not always the most effective. Finding the mix that works for you while having a constant conversation around fueling practices and rest is the key. Are you ready to reevaluate your training and nutrition practices when it comes to cycling or other exercises outside of strength training? Share which activities you enjoy doing the most with me in the comments section of the episode page. In This Episode How to start introducing the idea of periodizing your training (9:45) The most common training mistakes that female athletes need to approach differently in cycling training (13:33) Why changing your mindset around how you train as you age is crucial to your success (21:01) Examples of High-Intensity Interval Training on a bike and why it may not be what you imagine (25:29) Why you need to be fueling properly for your activity level and body composition (30:04) Quotes “It is really important to sit down with your client or athlete and just allow them to dream about what the best scenario ever would be. And then I kind of reverse engineer how we can make that happen, and rest is by and large a big part of that.” (11:47) “Cycling, that sport, is so stuck in traditions a lot of times. And we didn't really know until about five years ago that women really needed to train a little bit differently once they are over the age of 40. So we are still fighting this ingrained traditional sense of training, and we are still fighting a little bit of the patriarchy and misogyny.” (17:14) “I want you to think more about how to keep that muscle on your skeleton; that is what is going to help you stay comfortable and keep you peddling for a longer duration. It's not the hours in the saddle.” (21:49) “Would you take your sports car to the gas station and fill it up with 2 gallons of gas and then go for a 4-hour drive through the mountains? Probably not, because you would be worried about running out of gas. And that is literally the same thing you are doing when controlling or restricting your intake, and then trying to train on top of that.” (32:09) “It's hard to distinguish the correct information from the noise. And so that is where we come in, and we talk about fueling your body for the tasks at hand.” (34:22) Featured on the Show Join the Group Strength Nutrition Unlocked Waitlist Here AXN Fitness and Coaching Website Follow Marissa on Instagram | Facebook Join the Confident Cycling Collective Facebook Group Here Check out the full show notes here! In this episode of the psychedelic medicine podcast, Allison Feduccia, PhD joins to discuss the intersection of psychedelic medicine and women's health. Dr. Feduccia is a neuropharmacologist, psychedelic researcher, and builder of virtual and in-person communities. She is cofounder of two prominent organizations, psychedelic.support and Project New Day, and is additionally a scientific advisor for Eastra. Alli has been researching psychedelics since 2004 when she first began studying MDMA and has subsequently been involved in the field through work at numerous universities, the NIH, and MAPS. In this work she seeks to spread evidence-based knowledge, connection to resources, and strategies for individuals to maximize potential therapeutic benefits of psychedelics through safe and responsible practices. In this conversation, Alli responds to questions touching on all areas of women's health and the impact psychedelics could have specifically for female patients. A major theme of the discussion is the interplay between psychedelics and hormones. While this is a topic with little in the way of scientific research, Alli shares some interesting ideas about how the neuromodulation of psychedelics could interact with endocrine systems, and how serotonin receptors within the uterus could explain certain anecdotal reports of various effects of psychedelics on menstrual pains or irregularities. In a similar vein, Alli discusses some of the physiological effects of psychedelics, particularly in relation to blood flow, and how these non-experiential features of these compounds could actually be helpful properties for women with certain conditions. This insight leads to interesting avenues for future drug development and also stresses the importance of studying psychedelics at different doses so that the positive health effects can be isolated. Alli also talks about the potential for psychedelic healing in the context of postpartum depression, sharing an evocative family story which illustrates simply how crucial and overlooked this issue has been in healthcare. The advances in mental healthcare coming out of psychedelic research provide a promising path forward for such conditions, however. In this episode: How psychedelics could help with premenstrual discomfort Concerns about taking psychedelic substances while pregnant Psychedelics and postpartum depression How psychedelics could impact hypoactive sexual desire disorder Psychedelics interactions with menopause Potential role for hormones alongside set and setting for impacting the psychedelic experience Quotes: “It may be that psychedelics could really affect women's moods as they go through these different life stages, and help them feel better.” [4:45] “Maybe this concept of neurotransmitter modulation with our sex hormones may be a target for drug development work as well.” [23:42] “This is also pertinent to transgender women who may be using hormones. This type of modulation on mood or physiological symptoms—this could be really applicable too for helping to really have the body adjust and be more balanced to changes in hormonal fluctuations in the body.” [26:59] Links: Psychedelic.support website Project New Day website Eastra Health Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui
Hourly or Salary? Episode #382 with Robyn Reis Whether you decide on hourly or salary, be sure to do your homework! And to help you determine which may be best for your practice, Kirk Behrendt brings back Robyn Reis, an HR expert from Bent Ericksen, to share everything to consider when choosing hourly or salary for your employees. To learn about the benefits, pitfalls, and the laws you need to know, listen to Episode 382 of The Best Practices Show! Main Takeaways: There are advantages and pitfalls for both hourly and salary. Consider every circumstance that a salary is going to cover. Quarterly audits are essential for salaried team members. Have all expectations in writing to avoid future problems. Schedule regular check-ins with team members. Be sure to follow the wage and hour laws in your state. Quotes: “It's all about predictability. People think that when I give somebody a salary, it's predictable. They know when they're going to get their paycheck, how much they're going to get paid. It works for a lot of people. But the caveats that go along with a salary are twofold. One is classification of the employee is first and foremost. And that is, are you exempt or nonexempt? No matter how you pay somebody — hourly, salary, commission, per diem, in blueberry pie — it has to be determined whether they're exempt or nonexempt. That's according to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. And that's part of the Wage and Hour Division laws that govern how much taxes are taken out and all that good stuff.” (4:36—5:28) “What you want to think about when it comes to that predetermined or predefined salary is, are you making sure that they're getting paid for the time that they work? So, even as a salaried employee classified as nonexempt, you still need to clock in and clock out. You still need to verify your time. That's part of the record retention requirements and the timekeeping. Again, keeps everything fair and equitable. People are being compensated for the time that they work.” (8:56—9:29) “When you do give a salary to a nonexempt employee, you want to make sure that you're accommodating or counting on all the hours you expect them to work.” (10:45—10:56) “[Expectations are] absolutely huge because a team member has to understand, a) how do they earn their paycheck, and b) when there are some incongruencies that there is something to go back to to say, ‘Wait a minute. This is what I understood.' So, having it in writing is key. It's not only for the team members' understanding, but for protection of the doctor so that they can say, ‘Yes, I'm following all the employment compliance laws that I need to follow for my particular practice in my state, and this is where we start our relationship and our channels of communication.'” (13:23—14:05) “Putting it in writing means that there is less chance of, ‘Wait, nobody ever told me that,' or, ‘I thought it was this way.' Putting it in writing lessens the chance of miscommunication. And when push comes to shove, there's no, ‘He said she said,' or, ‘I thought she meant that,' or, ‘He promised me this.' Every lawyer everywhere will tell you, if it's not in writing, it didn't happen, much like the patient records.” (14:05—14:31) “Putting it in writing is really, really important for that employer-employee relationship. No misunderstanding, no question marks. ‘These are your hours. This is your schedule. This is what is expected of you. These are your benefits. And this is what you're going to be compensated.'” (14:52—15:10) “The pitfalls are, when you do a salaried employee, you still have to watch your hours. They still have to track their hours. So, as a nonexempt employee, they still have to track their hours. I would recommend that somebody who pays their team on salary, once a quarter, go back and audit, ‘Are we in alignment with what the expected hours per week were, what the hourly rate calculates out through the salary, and did we miss any overtime timeframes...

Known as the “green-haired Oprah of LinkedIn,” she was one of the first people on LinkedIn Live and currently has the longest-running daily channel on LinkedIn with fully original content. In this episode, Goldie recalls the resistance she faced when she decided to make video content on LinkedIn before any other platform, explains why innovation is a driving force in her work, and helps you figure out what style of content creation you're best suited for. The Finer Details of This Episode: Goldie discusses her “LinkedIn-first” streaming platform and some of the other content creators she's involved with. Tired of listening to various gurus and coaches online on what you should do to improve your well-being? Do you feel frustrated because no matter how hard you try following all their advice and tips, you keep on struggling because they don't fit your personality or lifestyle? Perhaps, you should find your sense of self through empowered wellness. In this episode of the Live Your Personal Best podcast, I speak with Allison Pelot, a dynamic fitness trainer, and energy coach specializing in rapid permanent change through corrective exercise, metabolic nutrition, and energetic alignment. Allison is also the author of Finally Thriving: Your Guide to Empowered Wellness. Listen to this episode to be aware of what works for your well-being, instead of constantly looking outside yourself for answers, and what you should do if you're lost in the process. Episode Timeline [2:10] Allison shares what's in her book Finally Thriving: Your Guide to Empowered Wellness. [4:46] Allison explains what empowered wellness is. [5:48] Allison talks about how you can start practicing empowered wellness. [10:48] Allison reveals her background. [20:39] Allison explains why humans are all designed to thrive. [24:15] Allison leaves her one last piece of advice. Key Takeaways Empowered Wellness means you own your experience. Connecting with yourself can help you choose what works for you, especially when you're being presented with opinions and ideas. If you heavily really on someone else's opinion for your self-care, at some point, you'll feel lost and disconnected. If you're looking to practice empowered wellness, give yourself space. Take out the things you don't need, like distractions of your life. Prioritize your life every day so you can put yourself first. Take all the noise to have that extra space to bring in new opportunities and changes. Don't put too many restrictions on yourself. Don't overcomplicate yourself. Connect with your inner child so that you can connect with the powerful parts of yourself. You already have everything that we need. You need to remove all the blocks that prevent you from acquiring all of them. Quotes “It's okay not to do anything sometimes.” - Allison [8:34] “Give yourself space for grace.” - Allison [10:39] “The energetic intertwines with the energetic more than we realize.” - Allison [17:07] “You definitely deserve to be happy. In today's episode, Matt and Garrett continue the discussion on market narratives, particularly those aspects surrounding the real estate market. They discuss submarkets which mean markets that are near each other but are not the same and how that translates into all the assumptions buyers and sellers are making about marketplaces. They start off by giving a comparison between Seattle and West Seattle, with the latter having a 5% appreciation and the former having a 1% appreciation on homes in the market - West Seattle becoming a submarket of Seattle which is the main market. The hosts talk about how to interpret data or assumptions made about marketplaces, the importance of engaging in research regardless of what other agents are saying about the marketplace, why you need to pay attention to the specific data about the little submarkets, and understanding what makes a particular neighborhood wanted. They also explain why understanding your marketplace and submarket is so very important. As you listen in today, you will learn some valuable lessons including the value of doing your market research and of not allowing interest rates to dictate your level of success. At one time it was the fight for Seattle, then they started fighting for the suburbs, and now they're realizing the suburbs are out of control, and they're going like, 'We could actually have a better chance by going back into the city, and seeing if we can maybe get a shot at a home with less competition.'” “The condo building that has more amenities with open-air spaces, gyms, and other things in it, is probably going to perform better than a building that doesn't.” “I had some specific data points that I always checked in on and we've talked about absorption rates I would check in on. I would sit down for a couple of hours and run the data on different price points and different marketplaces.” “If you can figure out the differences in marketplaces, you can guide your people so much better.” “If I can have an agent that's working in my corner that is highly educated, I'll take that all day long as we're out there going to battle trying to find a house.” “Whatever your given marketplaces, especially the larger marketplaces, don't assume that there's a blanket 'This is what our marketplace is doing.' And don't push that story on your clients.' In this episode of the Psychedelic Medicine Podcast, Joel Castellanos joins to discuss the emerging topic of psychedelic therapies for pain-related conditions. Dr. Castellanos is a Board certified physical medicine and rehabilitation and pain management physician and an associate professor in the department of anesthesiology at UC San Diego school of medicine. He earned his medical degree from University of Toledo college of medicine and has since completed a two year program in healthcare administration during his residency at University of Michigan, as well as a fellowship in pain medicine at UC San Diego school of medicine. Most recently he completed the integrative medicine fellowship from the University of Arizona. In this conversation, Dr. Castellanos introduces the topic of psychedelics as a therapeutic modality for various pain conditions. Dr. Castellanos explains that much of the pain management field focuses on neuromodulation as the basis for particular therapeutic techniques, so psychedelics—which have profound modulating effects within the brain—naturally seem promising. However, research into this topic is still developing, with studies from the seventies providing some initial data which is now being corroborated and expanded by contemporary research. Dr. Castellanos shares the details of this work, explaining how combined psychedelic treatment and mirror box therapy could prove to be particularly efficacious for individuals suffering from phantom limb pain. In light of the upcoming trials led by Dr. Castellanos and his colleagues at the Psychedelic Health Research Initiative at UC San Diego, he also discusses certain special considerations for working with amputees as guides or facilitators of psychedelic therapy. The double blind randomized controlled trial investigating the efficacy of psilocybin therapy for phantom limb pain will be conducted first and is currently enrolling. This study seeks to test the efficacy of psilocybin therapy for this condition as well as elucidate its potential mechanism of action through brain imaging. Click here to enroll. In this episode: An overview of the literature on psychedelics and pain Albert Lin's experience treating his phantom limb pain with combined psychedelic and mirror box therapy Why psychedelics may be a great alternative to many current treatment options for chronic pain Stories of healing resulting from psychedelic therapy in patients who have suffered with chronic pain How to enroll in Dr. Castellanos' upcoming trial for patients with phantom limb pain Quotes: “It's really interesting to me that neuromodulation - modulating the nervous system - is such a big part of pain medicine—and no one had really looked at psychedelics as an option when they are something that really modulates the nervous system in a profound way.” [4:24] “I don't want people to think that this is going to be a panacea, that this is going to be the cure for everything and everyone's pain because we need to do the research, we need to do the work and really answer the clinical question on who this is going to be most efficacious for.” [7:50] “Where there has been the most evidence so far and the most work done is in the headache patient population, which is definitely needed. There are so many people who suffer from migraines, from cluster headaches, and it can be really debilitating.” [17:45] “In the same way that patients who have had PTSD or have severe anxiety or depression it helps to do some talk therapy with those [psychedelic therapy] sessions, maybe some movement therapy during the psychedelic sessions may be beneficial [for treating pain].” [23:26] Links: Enroll in Dr. Castellanos' upcoming study through PHRI at UCSD Dr. Castellanos on Twitter Psychedelic Health Research Initiative at UC San Diego Psychedelic Medicine Association Porangui

The Department of Veterans Affairs is one of the most complex organizations in government. At the center of this complexity is VA disability ratings and compensation; a program developed over 200 years ago to compensate service members while they recovered from service. Today, this program is convoluted, lengthy and often the most challenging process a Veteran must endure during transition to civilian life. Daniel Gade, a retired Army Officer, combat-wounded amputee and author of Wounding Warriors: How Bad Policy is Making Veterans Sicker and Poorer joins host Fran Racioppi to challenge the current one-size fits all approach to VA disability compensation calling it outdated and antiquated; as well as providing recommendations for reform. Daniel served in the Bush and Obama administrations and was the Republican nominee in the 2020 election to represent Virginia in the US Senate.Read the full episode transcription here and learn more on The Jedburgh Podcast Website.Highlights:-Daniel breaks down the VA disability claims process through a personal account of his combat and non-combat related injuries, including a detailed account of being wounded twice in Iraq and the events leading to the loss of his leg.-We explain the numbers behind the VA, the increase in disability claims over the last two decades, the addition of bi-partisian policy and the cost of disability claims as related to other VA education and health programs.-After losing his leg in Iraq, Daniel explains how he took control of his rehabilitation by focusing on the future, what factors would aid in his recovery and what must be done to “self-rescue.”-Daniel used extreme sports like triathlons and cross-fit to prove he could recover and raise his expectations of himself and his ability to thrive as an amputee.-The concept of “Stolen Valor” demonstrates how too many people misrepresent their service, the level of their injuries and their disabilities to increase their payments from the VA leading to increased policy complexity and bureaucracy.-Daniel defines the term “permanent and total” and shows how it allows veterans to avoid treatment to ensure continued compensation.-The path to reform requires three initiatives: focus on employment, link compensation to treatment, separation of military-related injuries vs those incurred while in the military.Quotes:-”It causes veterans to see themselves as sick, or as disabled, or as useless and worthless.”-”Receiving benefits from government has become much more normalized across society.”-”We should be much more careful about how we use the word disability. The current process uses disability for anything wrong with a veteran.”-”The VA spends more on veterans staying sick than veterans getting better.”-”The VA's priority is on paying people disability benefits. Not on rehabilitating them, educating them, housing them, or helping them in other ways.”-“It ripped a chunk out of my thigh and I woke up in a ditch.”-”I was in a surgeon's care in 37 minutes and my blood pressure was 60 over 0.”-”My philosophy has always been find a solution and engage in whatever the solution might be.”-“I realized right then that I wanted to be a person who can do anything.”-”The veterans' Iron Triangle is the most difficult Iron Triangle in all of politics.” Daniel's Three Daily Foundations to Success:-Hug my kids-Connect to something greater than yourself-Find a way to serve othersThis episode is brought to you by Jersey Mike's, 18A Fitness and Analytix Solutions.

Welcome to the first Monday of the first week of a new year! I like looking at the New Year as a way to reset. Even if I'm working towards the same goals, a new year gives me a fresh start and a burst of energy to make sure I'm on the right track. I like to spend the first week of the year taking the time to evaluate my goals, come up with a plan, and prepping my mind with the right attitude and focus going into the next season. With that, I wanted to invite you on this journey with me! This week I will be releasing 5 podcast episodes called the Week One Reset. Through this week I will be walking you through how to go from ideas of goals to actual implementation, full of motivational tips and actionable activities for you to do each day. It's common for people to write down their resolutions when the new year approaches. Although some people have seen success in this endeavor, unfortunately, that's not the case for the majority of those who attempted to change something in some of the aspects of their life. In this first episode of Week 1 Reset, I discuss the most crucial factor contributing to the new year's resolutions. I also shared some action steps that you should be working towards this 2022. #1 Reason Why New Year's Resolutions Fail Episode: https://www.weekonereset.com/goals Episode Timeline [2:00] Emily discusses the rationale behind Week 1 Reset. [2:58] Emily shares the importance of making new year's resolutions. [5:41] Emily explains why new year's resolutions work. [7:19] Emily shares her insights on why it's great to have new year's resolutions this 2022. [7:31] Emily discusses the importance of determining what goal you should be working towards to ensure the success of a new year's resolution. [8:00] Emily shares the specific steps you should do when determining the goals you should achieve this 2022. Key Takeaways Even though many people discourage themselves from making new year's resolutions, it's still best to set some for yourself this 2022. To achieve your new year's resolution, you should plan and surround yourself with uplifting communities. Contrary to popular belief, new year's resolutions work for many people. Look for goals that you can control. If possible, make sure that when you create these goals, you can feel like you can work on them, and they can change you no matter what circumstances you're in. Many people fail to achieve their new year's resolutions because they have the wrong goal. List down all the possible goals you might have for yourself. These goals might be short-term or long-term. These goals should cover different facets of your life. These goals should make you happy and fulfilled. Ask yourself what goals you'll be proud to accomplish by the end of the year. Say your goals out loud and observe how it transforms into a physical object as you create sound waves from these goals. Quotes “It's true that you don't need a new year's resolution, but if you have this itch in the back of your mind like I've been wanting to make this change, I've been wanting to do this thing. I've been wanting to accomplish something that I just didn't know when to start, and this is that nudge. This is a great starting point. So since you're already here, why not make it?” - Emily [3:43] “This is the year to set a resolution. This is the year for personal development.” - Emily [6:15] — Are you struggling to meet your new year's resolution every time? Perhaps, you have fallen into some traps that hinder you from meeting your goals. Listen to an additional 15-minute episode discussing the number one reason why new year's resolutions fail and a step-by-step plan on how you can avoid that path: https://www.weekonereset.com/goals Learn more about your ad choices. Kris wishes everyone a holiday season, whether this is your favorite time of year or you can't wait to get to 2022. Then, she welcomes Janaki Patel of the Kiddie Academy. Janaki talks about how she went from one person at an open house and questioning what she was doing in child care to now having her dream team and close to 500 children served. Janaki shares the great story of how she and her husband Hemal met and continue to support one another's biggest dreams. She talks about marketing and enrollment, why it's important for leaders to support their teams yet have clear boundaries, and what type of leadership vibe she attributes Kiddie Academy's success to. Key Takeaways: [9:16] The Kiddie Academy brand has three schools, with another one in construction and about to open soon. It's located in the mid-central area of Maryland, 30 minutes from Baltimore and an hour from D.C. The peaceful and quiet neighborhood is something Janaki very much appreciates. [14:06] Janaki shares how getting the first location in 2015 meant so much to her and was very much literally her “second” baby. [18:02] Janaki talks about drawing the line on where you spend your time and the importance of spending time with loved ones as a leader. Your child will grow up and eventually move on, and your business might not be there, so it's important to make memories with your children (or loved ones) while they are still around. [19:07] Fun Fact: Janaki met her wonderful husband on an Indian Matrimonial Website! She has since said “OK” to their dreams and they bring the best out of each other. [23:09] Coming from the corporate world at M&M, Janaki has learned several things to be a strong and effective leader. Your team will trust you when you show you trust them. Her team knows she has their back, and they have hers. Second, when your team knows the “why” behind what they are doing, they will be more likely to do it well and stay longer at their job. [28:15] Janaki discusses how she kept several teachers on the payroll for COVID-19, and how they kept their culture going during challenging times. Quotes: “It makes me proud that I made his dream a reality. I'm living his dream but it has also helped me build my own.” — Janaki “You get that dream team when you are there for them.” — Janaki “We are successful because we're together.” — Janaki “You can be the face of the business, the celebrity of the brand, and be the owner that people want to have friendships with. Just like we like to know the chef at a restaurant, but we're not expecting the chef to come out and clear the plates.” — Kris Mentioned in This Episode: Kris Murray The Child Care Success Company The Child Care Success Academy The Child Care Success Summit The Ultimate Childcare Marketing Guide: Tactics, Tools, and Strategies for Success, by Kris Murray The 77 Best Strategies to Grow Your Early Childcare Program - FREE! Like we are accomplishing all these things on the outside and it looks good. But inside it's crumbling in some areas.” - Erin “I always feel on. And if I'm not producing - I feel like it was a waste of time and a waste of day. So I really had to challenge where this came from. Why do I have to believe that I have to be producing something?” - Rachel “Everything is opposing. We have pain and we have pleasure. We have happy, we have sad. So why can't we experience more of the joy and the ease and the flow of your business than always feeling like you have to grind as if that's like the badge of honor.” - Rachel --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theconfidentwoman/message
If You Want To Set Yourself Up For Success, You Should: Identify your limiting belief patterns Replace your negative self-talk with positive affirmations Release your bad habits and commit to the new 2.0 version of yourself every day Have you ever considered that your yo-yo dieting or emotional eating rollercoaster could be coming from how you see yourself subconsciously? Many women use food to cope with life or unmet needs, which is where the self-sabotage starts. Mindful eating and getting to the root cause of your negative self-talk are two massive pieces of the puzzle regarding our identity and how it impacts our weight. Finding Your Sparkle Again with Deborah Capaccio Deborah Capaccio has helped hundreds of middle-aged women permanently overcome their problems with yo-yo dieting and emotional eating by focusing on living an authentic, true life. The way we think about and speak to ourselves directly impacts the bad habits we engage with, which is why it is Deborah's mission to help other women find their sparkle again. Getting Clear on How Your Subconscious Beliefs Manifest Women, especially those of us in middle-age, tend to give themselves to everyone else and leave their needs in the dust. Instead of working from a place of deficit, it is important to take yourself off the hook and identify what you are saying to yourself on a daily basis. When you take the time to look at where you are working from to get through your day and identify how you may be speaking negatively to yourself, you can stop the external manifestation of those beliefs and exchange them for something that will serve you better. Brain First, Body Second One of the most powerful things you can do to reverse stubborn weight gain and ultimately live a more fulfilled life is to reprogram your brain from negative self-talk to positive self-talk. Deborah's ‘Fit Mind Formula' helps women form healthy habits based on constructive affirmations that feel in line with who they want to be in this world. When women decide to do something, it is game time. You owe it to yourself to live your life from a place of abundance and happiness. Deborah is proof that if you change your mindset and show up as your authentic self, your reality and your body will follow. Are you ready to stop self-sabotaging by changing the way you see yourself subconsciously? Share what surprised you most about the connection between mindset and bad habits with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “It wasn't until I found this method that is easier than you can even imagine, to sort of shift my deep brain thinking first, that my body results followed second.” (5:15) “Really you can take this tangible advice, and start to flip that script, and realize the negative self-talk is so damaging, and it needs to stop right now.” (13:49) “Visualize your 2.0 version every day. You are not going to be working from a deficit anymore.” (20:54) “It is really important to nudge women if they are ready for it. A little slight nudge, a nudge ourselves, to sense that urgent. That even though things are fine right now, if we continue on this path, will they be fine?” (25:43) “It is never, ever too late to redefine and rediscover that true authentic identity, and pave a path for so many women to follow you.” (28:28) In This Episode Why women need to get out of the negative brain patterns surrounding body image (8:50) What you can do to flip the switch when it comes to your negative self-talk (11:49) How to replace your negative identity beliefs with daily positive affirmations (14:18) Ways to cultivate a more fit mind when it comes to body image, exercise, and food (18:32) Tips for setting new intentions for yourself in middle-age and beyond (26:26) Resources Mentioned: Use Promo Code ‘podcast' for 10% off the Essentially Whole Magnesium Restore Supplement Book a Free Consultation with Deborah Here Sparkle Girl Website Follow Deborah on Instagram | Facebook | YouTube Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes: Essentially You Episode #143: How to Give Yourself Grace During Your Biggest Healing Struggles with Arielle Lorre Essentially You Episode #149: Why Mindfulness and Mindset are Key to Healing Miracles with Elaina Ray Essentially You Episode #224: How to Finally Let Go of Emotional Eating and Self-Sabotage with Natasha Allen
Do you ever feel like there are so many things to get done that relaxing is downright impossible? Are your body and brain so busy that sitting still just doesn't feel like rest? If you are feeling this way, you are far from alone. The art of resting and sitting with your emotions takes patience and practice; it is something I have been working on for years and have yet to perfect. The most important thing to realize is that rest looks different for everyone. Whether it is watching a lighthearted movie or TV show, reading a good book, or simply slowing down your pace, relaxation is ultimately whatever you need it to be. While it may seem like the more you get done now, the more you can rest later, this usually is not the case. Instead, by learning how to sit still and just be, you will ultimately save yourself time and energy in the long run. Tune into this week's #straightfromcait episode for a conversation about what to do when you suck at relaxing. Learn about when I first began my practice of sitting, how to become the observer of your emotions and how to reduce your speed to get more done. Quotes • “It was that day that my practice of relaxation and resting and sitting began nearly sixteen years ago, in a tiny hostel in Buenos Aires.” (03:50-04:00) • “I have this internal belief that if I do more now, I can rest more later.” (04:35-04:45) • “If I just stop once in a while and allow myself to rest in whatever way I feel, I end up still getting all the things done that actually need to get done.” (06:24-06:36) • “Allowing myself to deep dive into fiction is what moves my business forward because that's where my ideas come from, that's where my brain has time to exercise itself and come up with ideas.” (10:57-11:07) • “My best advice is to reduce your speed of doing things by 10-20%. Feel free to keep yourself moving and, at the same time, just make an attempt to be more present, more focused and move a little more slowly.” (12:38-12:55) • “Relaxation and resting in a world that tells us we're not supposed to is a rebellious act and it is a practice....If you start practicing rest today, you might feel lazy, guilty, non-productive and all of those things for at least the first few weeks, if not longer. It takes practice also to move through those emotions.” (13:51-14:18) Links https://facebook.com/groups/friedtheburnoutpodcast https://instagram.com/friedtheburnoutpodcast XOXO, C If you know that it's time to actually DO something about the burnout cycle you've been in for too long - book your free consult today: bit.ly/callcait Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

If You Want To Want To Avoid Autoimmune Disease, You Should: Listen to your symptoms, advocate for yourself, and ask for more testing Calm your inflammation by focusing on gut health, nutrition, and lifestyle Implement breathwork and meditation to live a more balanced life The prevalence of autoimmune disorders in the past 50 years has risen so drastically that autoimmune disease is now the 3rd most common category of health issues in the United States. So what is causing so many Americans to develop these conditions? While many factors contribute to your overall health, food and gut health are the foundation for a working immune system. Finding a Balance with Donna Mazzola Dr. Donna Mazzola is a Pharmacist with a Master's degree in Functional Medicine and Human Nutrition. After obtaining her Doctorate in Pharmacy, Donna realized that it is only by finding a balance between medicine and nutrition that we can impact disease. After receiving her Hashimotos diagnosis in 2015, she created her blog Dr. Autoimmune Girl to help others identify the root causes of their diseases and take back control of their health. Understanding the Why Understanding the ‘why' behind your autoimmune condition can be a frustrating journey. The greatest challenge that people suffer from is the unexplained symptoms that can go unanswered for years before receiving a diagnosis. Donna knows that in order to better control what is happening in your body, you have to understand it better. By asking the right questions, learning how to decipher our labs, and advocating for ourselves, we can delay the progression of symptoms and take back control of your autoimmune disease rather than letting the disease control you. Heal Your Gut to Heal Your Condition Autoimmune conditions are proven to be the gateway to other illnesses down the line, which is why it is so important to be mindful of your symptoms and address your autoimmune condition as soon as possible. The majority of us live in a chronic inflammatory state without realizing it, and a gut protocol will always be your best friend when finding healing. Whether you have an autoimmune disease or not, starting with your gut is key if you have unexplained symptoms. Focusing on your gut health has many side benefits when it comes to not only autoimmunity but your overall health and longevity. While you may not like to hear it, it is time to identify your drivers of inflammation in order to heal your autoimmunity and find the balance you are missing. Are you ready to get to the root cause of your autoimmune condition, alleviate your symptoms, and find real balance and healing? Share your biggest takeaway from this episode with me in the comments section of the episode page. Quotes: “It is so important that we raise awareness of autoimmunity. We talk about the pandemic going on, but I look at autoimmune disease as the other pandemic that is going on that nobody is talking about.” (5:32) “Empowering yourself to understand these things and understand how these things are connected will allow you to ask the right questions.” (17:45) “When we start talking about how to mitigate that, it's focusing on those triggers; it's identifying what those triggers are, and removing them, mitigating it, and recognizing how your body responds when it is exposed to it. So for me, it is all about being in tune with your body.” (24:01) “Control what you can control, and provide your body with what it needs so that it can control the rest.” (28:04) “If you are able to overhaul your diet and recognize the nutrients you can get from whole foods; you are nourishing your body to function at a cellular level where it needs to be.” (44:23) In This Episode The importance of understanding the ‘why' when it comes to what an autoimmune disease truly is (9:10) How Covid-19 could be affecting your likelihood of triggering an autoimmune disease (19:33) The role of inflammation when dealing with your immune system symptoms (21:29) Understanding the spectrum of autoimmunity and how food can help put you in remission (31:40) What you should be focusing on if you want to shift away from the ‘Standard American Lifestyle' and the diseases that come with it (37:46) Resources Mentioned: Use Promo Code drmariza to get 15% Off Your Paleovalley Order Get Donna's new book The Immunity Food Fix here! How's your stress? I often feel like we're all stressed and that's the norm. But just because there's an expectation that we're feeling stressed doesn't make it okay. As today's guest explains, all this stress can have a severe negative impact on your health. About Rachel Doyle, RD Rachel Doyle is a Registered Dietitian who helps people overcome digestive issues with the healing power of food and functional nutrition. She works with clients individually and in group programs in her virtual private practice, RAD Nutrition. With a Master's degree in Nutrition and additional training in integrative and functional nutrition, Rachel uses gut health principles, the mind-body connection, and functional lab testing to help clients find their root cause and regain control of their health. Understanding the Common Causes of Gut Problems In this episode, Rachel delves into some common sources of various gut issues. One that she frequently sees is low levels of stomach acid. When we don't have enough of it, we'll have trouble breaking down and digesting food. This leads to a whole host of potential problems, from bloating and reflux to bacterial infections and overgrowth. Rachel also sees a lot of people with bacterial imbalances, various gut infections, and mineral deficiencies. Many times these problems exist in tandem and can lead to a slew of issues. She explains what to look for if you suspect there's a problem and steps to take to address it. The Connection Between Your Gut and Your Stress Levels In addition to these physical root causes of gut problems, is stress. Stress can come from many sources. Overwork, poor sleep habits, high-intensity exercise, past trauma, environmental toxins, and diet can all cause harmful levels of stress. Even though we can't control all these factors, there are steps that anyone can take to reduce stress in their life. Rachel explains how to start talking to yourself in order to accept that you don't need to live in a constant state of stress. Mindset is often at the center of this healing process. Before you can do anything else, you need to believe that recovery is possible. Sometimes the root of stress lies in the gut itself. By treating gut health and mental health together, Rachel has seen how actual and lasting healing occurs. How can mindfulness practices improve your overall gut health? Today I'm excited to talk to Lindsay Doztlaf about how to build a coaching reputation. She is the owner and founder of the Coaching Masters mastermind, the host of the podcast, Mastering Coaching, which is how I found her, and she is a coach of coaches. Lindsay is here to discuss everything from how she built her personal brand, how she thinks about getting out there, and how she found her first few clients, as well as her thoughts on building your reputation, identity, and your message. HIGHLIGHTS: Why Lindsay thinks relationships are critical for reputation How she finds places to network What pitfalls to avoid when starting your coaching business QUOTES: "It's like the very first step for me was identifying as a life coach and just being able to tell people that that's what I did." "I didn't look specifically for entrepreneur groups or marketing groups, things like that. I was just going to meet other business people to talk about my business." "What I teach is, “But don't forget to also be a really good coach” because that helps with all of it. If you know, “My clients get results. I am really good at what I do,” it's going to affect everything. Promoting your business on social media can be scary and overwhelming. But it's also a useful tool that, when used properly, can get you in front of the people who need your services the most. If you're an entrepreneur with a personal brand and want to reach more potential clients, today's guest has some great advice for you! About Martine Cadet Martine Cadet is a Social Media Content Coach and Creator for Female Coaches. She helps her clients convert viewers into paying clients, never run out of things to say, and become confident in connecting with their audience by mastering the skill of storytelling on their social platforms. Martine's system helps her clients increase their social media presence for their personal brand on Instagram and Facebook organically. She is a mom of two, a wife, and a sister that decided to go for her dream. She designed an online business that excites her every single day. Martine is the Founder and owner of Kaderique Media, LLC, a Boutique Digital Media Agency supporting small business owners so they can brand themselves online and expand their visibility on her TV Network Visualize and Create Network. Being Consistent Without the Stress In this episode, Martine breaks down the essential aspects of successful social media marketing. Whatever you do, being consistent is the most important thing. With your busy life, posting all the time might seem too daunting. That's why Martine stresses that consistency is based on how you define it. Whatever you decide to do, stick to it. If you want to post a video every Friday afternoon, then that's what you need to do. It's what your audience expects. By being the boss of your schedule, you won't get caught in the trap of feeling that you need to be showing up all day every day. To be consistent without it taking over your life, Martine wants you to have clear goals. Commit to regularly sitting down and planning your goals. With your long-term and short-term goals established, you can work backward to plan out how your posts will get you there. Building a Community Around Your Business We all want to feel a sense of belonging. Being part of a community is something we all value. Martine explains how she centers her business around the community that she built. She explains how gathering the people you want to serve in one place lets you best provide them with what you have to offer. To build a successful online community, Martine stresses the importance of quality over quantity. It's better to have a smaller number of engaged members than lots of unengaged ones. It's up to you to curate who's in there. To keep your community engaged, make posts that foster conversations. People like to talk about themselves. Ask them questions that get them responding. This will provide helpful information that you can use to engage with individual members on a deeper level. What role can social media play in your business? Leave a comment on the episode page! In this episode of the Millionaire Mindcast, we have a wonderful guest Mike Sarraille, who shares his military journey, how his life was saved by a comrade during a combat mission, leaderships, why self-preservation is vital for being a leader, the significance of training and managing talent, feedback loop and self-assessment, and the secrets on how to be a millionaire! Mike Sarraille is an entrepreneur, a keynote speaker, an expert in leadership development, talent acquisition, and talent management, a retired U.S. Navy SEAL officer and a former enlisted Recon Marine and Scout-Sniper, a former principal at Echelon Front, a management consulting firm alongside the co-authors of Extreme Ownership, Jocko Willink, and Leif Babin. He is the founder, managing partner, and CEO of EF Overwatch, a specialized executive search firm, and talent advisory that finds high-performing business leaders for senior, executive, or other critical leadership positions. Also, he co-authored the book, ‘The Talent War: How Special Operations and Great Organizations Win on Talent' and a columnist for Men's Journal and Men's Fitness under ‘The Everyday Warrior' column. When Mike retires from the military after 20 years of service, that's when he starts having self-reflection, conceptualizing things, and learning from his experiences. He realized that leadership, skills, and characteristics evolved during those dark times in the military field. Thus, he let himself grow and learn the things he must know and use this to make a new career in entrepreneurship. Now, he has become one of the experts in this field. Prior to that, he experiences ups and downs. But even with having that tough-guy persona, he believes that in order to stay in the game, you should not be afraid to talk to people when you're feeling off, and ultimately seek God's help. One thing that he encourages young people to do! Some Questions I Ask: For those who don't know who Mike is, and what EF Overwatch is, give us a little bit of a background, and history real quick? (00:52) Being able to humanize such a dark part of the military, and still be able to perform and function insanely, where do those that come from? (02:58) Going back to your own journey, what were some of those moments that you felt like you wanted to quit, and what got you pushing through? (05:33) You mentioned, leadership, skills, and characteristics evolved during some of those dark times, what does your reflective process look like? How should people who want to be great leaders deal with trauma or challenges, process some of these things, and use them as weapons instead of hiding them out and being ashamed of them? (08:10) How did you have this patience and persistence to keep pushing every day no matter what was in front of you? (14:03) You talk about recharge, what do you do to refill the cup? (16:59) If you were to give yourself an award for quality or characteristic that you're at least led to that you felt was your superpower that you had a little bit of an edge on your brothers and sisters, what would that be and why? (19:05) How do you unplug and come home and still live intentionally with your wife, your family, and your health beyond just the “job or the career that you've chosen for yourself”? (20:42) With the people around you that you give permission to kind of hold you accountable, how critical is that not only in the team and in the organizational environment but in the personal environment for people to really achieve optimum and peak performance and just get the most out of themselves in life? (23:23) It takes time to be an expert in a particular field, how do you communicate that to the young hustler? (33:27) What are some of the best organizations doing in terms of motivating, inspiring, empowering, and really equipping their people? How are they helping them sharpen their axes, and what does that look like in today's landscape? (37:29) How does preparation tie into this civilian and entrepreneurial world? (44:51) Just give us a broad spectrum on what the Talent War Group has to offer for the individuals that want to engage with you guys? In this episode, we have with us Jay Gabrani, an Accountant who left a significant position in Price Waterhouse to pursue his desire to become a businessman. True enough at the age of 25, he left his corporate career and went on to start his own businesses fulfilling a dream he kept telling his mother back in the day. It was in 2005 just right about after his first child was born did he get on real estate. He was able to make a seven-figure real estate portfolio out of it. But truth be told, it was not after many trials and challenges that he was able to reach that peak in his real estate career. Then came along, what he did not expect, the death of his wife. That's when after that, he took many years of sabbatical to make sense of everything and to take care of his children. Unprepared for what was to come at that time, as spouses, they did not have anything, like insurance, wills, and things to this effect. All he had was his real estate properties and these saw them through those times to tide them over. After years of hiatus, he realized so many lessons and that's when he put up Prepared Fathers to empower fathers and spouses, for that matter, to take financial responsibility seriously for their own family's welfare and for what is unforeseeable to come. Listen in to Jay as he walks us down his journey of making it big in real estate despite of many setbacks as well as the trial that shook his life and his children's, made him retreat from the world for quite a while and the lessons those circumstances brought about; not to mention the confident spirit that made him rose from the bottom and began an enterprise that would empower other fathers to secure their family's future. What You Will Discover in This Episode: It's not about resources it's about being resourceful Why you need to exercise due diligence especially when you become a more sophisticated investor How real estate saved him and his family a whole lot from financial problems during that most difficult time in his life How to prepare yourself for life's curveballs ahead Why did he start his business "Prepared Fathers" What are "money apps" and how do these helps organize your life A thing or two about saving and investing, and being creative in earning money at a young age What are the checklists you need into consideration to be financially prepared? Quotes: “It's not about resources, it's about being resourceful.” “First step, you must get a “Will” because if something happens, the last thing you want your family to deal with is the financial stress on top of whatever emotional stress.” “The non-negotiable in my house, you must figure out ways that you're going to earn money because they always want things.”“I have a saying with the children's skills, pay the bills.” “What skills do I teach my kids? They are: marketing skills, sales skills and investing skills.” “As long as you're teaching your children that they can be in science, in art, in sport, whatever it is, it doesn't matter, whatever their passion is, it's great. They can utilize those skills.” Resources: For financial checklist, you must need to know about, click here: www.preparedfathers.com/fire Connect with Jay Gabrani Website LinkedIn Facebook Pinterest Instagram Resources: No Money Down by Robert G.
