Did you know women represent only 33% of employees in the Tech industry? And according to Accenture half of women who go into the tech industry drop out by the age of 35. Knowing those stats, it's great when you hear of a company that is beating those odds. I wanted to know what is making the difference, so I've invited Laura Baldwin, the President of O'Reilly Media to share what they are doing at O'Reilly with all of us. Meet Laura Baldwin Laura Baldwin began working with O'Reilly Media in October 2001 as Chief Financial Officer and added Chief Operating Officer to her responsibilities before becoming O'Reilly's first President in March 2011. Prior to O'Reilly, she consulted for the publishing industry with BMR Associates, managing diverse large projects. Her media career started at Chronicle Books, where she was CFO for ten years, contributing to its successful distribution and gift business launch. Laura's diverse experience in banking, corporate governance, and media fuels her passion for the industry. She credits her leadership ethos to her all-girls high school, where she was taught that leadership is available to anyone who demonstrates initiative and drive regardless of their gender. At O'Reilly, she helped to create a diversity scholarship program and continues to advocate for an inclusive and open workforce. In this episode Laura and I discuss: ·         O'Reilly's executive team stat (45% women) and companywide stat of 43% women ·         When O'Reilly realized there was a discrepancy in their company, and something needed to change. ·         What they are doing differently, which has allowed them to sustainably achieve these numbers. ·         O'Reilly's current focus to help their people continue to have flexibility and manageable workloads. 5 Things That Cause People to Lose Trust

Most people, without training and mindset work, are uncomfortable giving others feedback. Without training and mindset work, giving feedback is perceived as a hard conversation. This is largely because of uncertainty of how the receiver is going to respond to the feedback. The fear is that the receiver will at minimum take offense and withdraw. They could also become defensive and lash out. I think we can all admit that there have been times when we avoided giving feedback for this reason. We've avoided giving feedback to protect ourselves, even though it would give the other person an opportunity to change their behavior and increase their chances of positive outcomes. On the other side of that equation, when we don't get quality feedback it leaves us with a gap in knowledge and unable to even consider making changes. Trust answers the basic question, can I rely on you? How much trust someone has in you is in relationship to the level to which they believe you can be relied upon. In this episode I'm sharing five things that will cause people to lose trust in you.

Analiza's book, and our conversation, focused on the myths we women, buy into that hinder our growth as leaders. Not too long ago, I was listening to an episode on The McKinsey Podcast, produced by McKinsey & Company. The episode was titled Busting myths about women in the workplace. Interesting. Not myths that we women hold about ourselves. Rather, the myths that are held about women in the workplace in general. Then recently I came across an article by Gallup titled The Path to Gender Parity in Leadership, published March 8, 2024. Emilie Aries on Systems-Level Solutions to Pay Equity

I'm going to get a bit vulnerable here and be transparent that on the Women Taking the Lead podcast I have not given a lot of time to the topic of pay equity. Part of it is because I'm typically not working with women around the areas of negotiating salary. That may come up when a client of mine is being offered a promotion but typically, I'm not dealing with the issue of disparities in pay. And what my guest is going to really underscore for us today is pay equity is not something that comes about because women have good negotiating skills. I know, shocker. Because that's what we've been led to believe for a long time now. If only women would develop certain skills, there wouldn't be so much inequity. My guest Emily Aries is calling BS on that. Meet Emilie Aries: Emilie Aries is a speaker, podcaster, author, and the Founder & CEO of Bossed Up, an award-winning leadership development and career services company committed to closing the gender leadership gap. Aries has worked with leaders at Fortune 500 companies to support retention, diversity and inclusion, and human resource initiatives, and has been featured in media outlets including the Washington Post, CNN Money, Buzzfeed, and more. Her book, Bossed Up, serves as a practical roadmap for women who want to set themselves up for sustainable, long-term career success and step up as the boss of their lives. In this episode Emilie and I discuss: Current stats on pay inequities (it's not just a problem for women) Why developing negotiation skills is not solving the gender gap in pay. What has proven to be effective in closing pay gaps across genders, ages, races and abilities. Hello and welcome to Women Taking the Lead. Incredible talents are often overlooked, underutilized, or placed in situations that are bound to fail. Every now and again, as I'm connecting with each of you on LinkedIn, I'll ask if you have any topic suggestions for the podcast. I recently got a response that immediately piqued my interest. The response read, “One thing I struggle with as a leader is gender stereotypes and expectations on how a female leader needs to act. People assume female leaders need to always be nurturing and soft, and when they need to be direct or decisive people find that harsh. If you have a podcast that addresses this issue and how to overcome it, I would love to listen.” Me too! So here it is. Resources Leadership Coaching. Have you ever worked on a team going through a lot of change? I'm guessing you have many times and in many different scenarios. I'm also guessing your experience of that change had a lot to do with the level of trust that the team had for one another and the leaders of the team and/or organization. When there is a high level of trust the impacts of the change are softened. When there is low trust change can be traumatic. Clearly, we want to work in teams that have high trust but if that's not the current condition, how do we get there? To answer that question I've asked Malia Monaco to join me for this episode.   In this episode Malia and I talk about: ·         The work that Malia does for leaders and organizations through Positive Intelligence involving change management and trust building. ·         What it takes to build trust in teams and what becomes possible when trust grows. ·         Why it's important to get to the root of the problem rather than tackling the symptoms, which is where many organizational initiatives go wrong. ·         How our belief system will shape what we see around us and determine whether we bring harsh judgment or blameless discernment to our reactions. ·         While insights are important, they only make up 20% of sustainable long-lasting change what makes up the other 80%. Are you ready to redefine failure and discover how to tap into confidence? I'm chatting with Dr. Brittney Ezell, a former athlete and motivational speaker, who shares her unique perspective on failure, courage, and quitting. Here are the key takeaways from this thought-provoking discussion: 1. Failure is Not the End. Brittney emphasizes that failure is not the opposite of success but an integral part of it. It's an event, not a quality of a person. Instead of fearing failure, we should embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow. 2. Courage is a Choice. Courage isn't an inherent trait; it's a choice we make when faced with challenges. By acknowledging that courage can be summoned when needed, we can build our confidence over time. 3. Confidence is Rooted in Past Success. Confidence is not something we can instantly generate. It's a product of our past successes. Building confidence is like stacking small wins, which eventually lead to a strong belief in oneself. 4. The Importance of Mentorship. Surrounding yourself with mentors who hold up a mirror to your potential can be transformational. They help you see your unique strengths and capabilities. 5. Quitting vs. Pivoting. Quitting is giving up on yourself; it's discarding your skills, experiences, and unique qualities. Pivoting, on the other hand, is about redirecting your path while retaining your core self. Dr. Brittney Ezell will be a keynote at The Maine Women's Conference on October 25 in Portland, Maine. This conversation is a little taste of what she is going to share at the conference and I encourage you to come to Maine, come to the conference and see Brittany in person. It's nearly impossible to be your best at work when you are dealing with hot flashes, fatigue and brain fog. This is especially true when there's no support for what you are going through. There are changes on the horizon, but we'll usher in these changes much more quickly if we can become active participants in the solution. Are you curious about neurodiversity in the workplace? Did you know that nearly 30% of the population falls into the neurodivergent category, including individuals with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and more? Understanding neurodiversity is crucial because it challenges the notion that processing information differently is a deficit. Instead, it recognizes that people are just different, and accommodating their unique needs can lead to increased productivity, innovation, and happiness. This episode offers valuable insights and practical advice for leaders to promote neurodiversity and create inclusive workplaces where individuals can thrive. Meet Katherine McCord Katherine, a physically and neurodiverse woman herself, built her career on inclusive innovation in People Operations and HR Tech. She lives by the motto that different is not a deficit. In 2014 she founded Titan Management, a national people operations consulting firm, and then in 2021 she shook up HR Tech by designing the first ever fully accessible, anti-bias Applicant Tracking System plugin that fires the resume and showcases company diversity! Featured at Web Summit, HR Disruptor, SHRM, and London School of Business, she makes an energetic, interactive, education-based speaker who always brings some spice! In this episode Katherine and I discussed: The definition of neurodiversity and understanding that these differences are not deficits but rather natural variations. The significance of making accommodations for neurodivergent individuals in the workplace and the need for leaders to create psychological safety, listen to employees' needs, and provide appropriate accommodations to enable their comfort and productivity. How, by standardizing accommodations to make them available to everyone, not just neurodivergent individuals, leaders can create an inclusive work environment where everyone feels supported. Using Humor! Katherine shares her personal experience with neurodiversity and suggests using humor as a tool to diffuse tension and normalize differences. Why, If you are a neurodivergent leader, sharing personal experiences and being open about one's own neurodiversity can establish trust, create psychological safety, and encourage open conversations about diversity, mental health, and physical differences.   Connect with Katherine: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/katherine-mccord-093bb343/ Resources Episode Show Notes: Transcript and links mentioned in this episode.
