And this week's episode of CockTales: Dirty Discussions has range, okay? From backshots and braids to funerals and family group pics, we cover it all. Kiki talks about heading to Louisiana a few hours after recording for her grandfather's funeral and gives an update on the emotional rollercoaster that came with it (yes, grandma got her group photo and yes, it's on YouTube). Meanwhile, Medinah just took her braids out in the most luxurious way and is deep in her "enjoy and romanticize every moment" era. We're talking young love, grown crushes, being a tender-headed Black girl just trying to function, and the ridiculous things we believed about sex back in the day. There's also a new cocktail recipe (Heaux on the Rocks), a ridiculous listener confession, and of course, a little indecisive date suggestions from Diane.

Amanda Jones has had quite a career, as evident in this really insightful conversation about her journey as a film and television composer. One of her latest projects, Number One on the Call Sheet, is a prolific, eye-opening two-part Apple TV+ documentary featuring candid conversations with some of the entertainment industry's biggest stars, like Angela Bassett, Halle Berry, Jamie Foxx, Idris Elba, Whoopi Goldberg, Viola Davis, Denzel Washington and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, to name just a few.Amanda's career includes BET's Twenties from Lena Waithe, OWN's Cherish the Day, produced by Ava DuVernay and A Black Lady Sketch Show, produced by Robin Thede and Issa Rae. We learn about the empowerment she received from this powerful group of Black women so early in her journey.Amanda earned her first Emmy nomination for Home, an Apple TV+ series and became the first Black woman nominated for an Outstanding Music Composition for a Documentary Series or Special (Original Dramatic Score) Emmy. Later, Amanda was awarded a Daytime Emmy Award for Home. The idea of following one's passion resonates heavily throughout this conversation. Amanda shares that her love of sounds, more specifically music, started around the age of 3. After graduating from Vassar College and later, studying film scoring and orchestration at Berklee College of Music, she landed an internship with Hans Zimmer and it was an opportunity at Lionsgate that helped give her a more 360-degree sense of the business side of things.Other takeaways from this multifaceted chat hone in on creating a sonic language for films and TV, the importance of asking questions, communication and collaboration during the creative process, having a strong creative voice, knowing when to delegate as well as fighting off stigmas reserved for women of color and mothers.A co-founder of Composers Diversity Collective, Amanda's other credits include Somebody Somewhere, Good Trouble, Naomi, Young Love, 7 Days, Dreamland: The Rise and Fall of Black Wall Street, Definition Please, Moving On, The Perfect Find, Mea Culpa, Jodie and the new Apple TV+ series, Murderbot.
In this heartfelt and humor-filled episode, Mining Minds sits down with the unforgettable Patti Haye — mother, grandmother, storyteller, and true pioneer of family life. At 87 years young, Patti takes us on a powerful journey through her life growing up post World War II, navigating early motherhood, and supporting a family through decades of cross-country moves, strikes, and the Alaskan wilderness. With stories that span barefoot days in the Yakima Valley to raising children in harsh winters and small mining towns, Patti reminds us of what resilience looks like. She talks about building homes from scratch (literally and metaphorically), the challenges of living frugally, and the joys of doing it all with love. From all of us at Mining Minds — Happy Mother's Day! To the women holding it down in work boots, office chairs, at home, or in the classrooms — this episode is for you. "Meet the Khumalos" dives headfirst into the whirlwind of family feuds, suburban antics, and unexpected friendships. At the heart of the chaos is Grace Khumalo (Khanyi Mbau), who appears to have it all—a picturesque home, a devoted husband (Bonga Dlamini), and a charming son (Jesse Suntele). But her peaceful life is turned upside down when her former high school rival, Bongi Sithole (Ayanda Borotho), moves in next door.Bongi, a sharp-witted businesswoman, brings along her thriving family, including her husband (Siyabonga Shibe) and two brilliant daughters (Khosi Ngema, Alizwa Sikhafungana). From the moment Grace and Bongi lock eyes, their old rivalry reignites, sparking a battle of pride, status, and wit.Things take an outrageous turn when the two mothers discover that their children are secretly dating. Determined to put an end to the budding romance, Grace and Bongi launch into a series of wild and increasingly elaborate schemes. Meanwhile, their love-struck kids do their best to outmaneuver them, sneaking around under their watchful, and often hilariously misguided, eyes. With sharp humor, heartfelt moments, and larger-than-life antics, Meet the Khumalos is a rollercoaster ride of love, war, and the unpredictable bonds that form when families collide.

We continue our David Lynch arc with his 1990 film 'Wild at Heart.' This episode dissects the film's frenetic energy, its blend of surrealism and conventional storytelling, and its status as a Southern Gothic road movie. We examine standout performances by Nicolas Cage and Laura Dern, discuss the film's controversial scenes and critical reception, specifically Roger Ebert's divisive review, and explore Lynch's recurring themes of innocence, optimism, and Americana. In May 1996, 24-year-old Julianne Williams and 26-year-old Laura Winans set off on a weeklong camping trip in Shenandoah National Park. The two experienced hikers were eager to immerse themselves in the beauty of the Virginia wilderness. The adventure was a celebration of sorts. Julie and Lollie, as they were known to friends, had recently moved in together in Vermont, a major step in their relationship. The young women had not yet come out to their families back home in the Midwest, and were still adjusting to life as an openly gay couple. On May 31, 1996, Julie's father reported the couple missing as they'd been due home three days earlier. The two women's bodies were discovered the next day. They'd been brutally assaulted and murdered. A widespread investigation to find their killer ensued, but would ultimately lead to the wrong man. Julie and Lollie's families would have to wait decades for answers, and the close of their case would be deeply disappointing for some. Tune in for a comprehensive look at one of Lynch's most fascinating films.
