In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the new animated film on Netflix that has everyone talking. It's called “KPop Demon Hunters,” and was an instant success when it was released back in June. It's gained so much momentum that it was shown in a limited release on the big screen - just for two days and in only 1,700 theaters - in a sing-along format. Despite that limited release, it still won the entire box office for the weekend, giving Netflix its first number one box office title in its 18-year history. Several songs from its soundtrack are simultaneously in the Billboard Top 10. So… what in the world is “KPop Demon Hunters” about, and is this something our kids should be watching? The answers might surprise you. Episode Links Given that the movie has the word “demon” in the title, it's not surprising that today's conversation raised issues regarding the paranormal world. Dr. White gave a series at Mecklenburg Community Church (Meck) called “Paranormal” that you may be interested in checking out - particularly the installment that maps out the spiritual world. You can find that series on Church & Culture HERE. Dr. White mentioned that when it comes to what you allow your kids to watch, including this movie, what's most important is to seize the opportunity to have really good spiritual conversations with your kids. He referenced a recent blog written by our MecKidz team - the children's program at Meck. The blog is titled “‘KPop Demon Hunters': How to Engage Movies and TV with your Kids,” and can be found HERE. Finally, there are a number of articles that were used as source material for today's conversation. If you're interested in going down the “KPop Demon Hunters” rabbit hole, you can check these out: Itzel Luna and Jake Coyle, “‘KPop Demon Hunters' gives Netflix its first box-office win,” AP News. Chloe Veltman, “Fans across the country raise their voices at 'KPop Demon Hunters' singalongs,” NPR. Stephen Thompson, “'KPop Demon Hunters' and the band Babymetal hit fresh milestones on the pop charts,” NPR. Isabel Ong, “We're Not Afraid of Monsters and Demons Anymore,” Christianity Today. Sopan Deb, “‘KPop Demon Hunters' Has Everyone Bobbing Their Heads. Especially Parents,” The New York Times. Stephen Armstrong, “Kpop Demon Hunters: the Netflix film giving Disney nightmares,” The Telegraph. Scott Greenstone, “It started with friends at home. Now Dungeons & Dragons is in its stadium era,” NPR. Samantha Masunaga, “‘KPop Demon Hunters' might win the box office. Why Netflix won't say,” Los Angeles Times. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. We'd also love to hear from you if there is a topic that you'd like to see discussed on the Church & Culture Podcast in an upcoming episode. Bad Bunny's Historic Puerto Rico Residency Captivates Fans Worldwide

Bad Bunny

Bad Bunny is commanding headlines and social media this week with his larger-than-life residency in Puerto Rico, known as "No Me Quiero Ir de Aquí," which continues to redefine what a live music experience can be. Every night he's transforming San Juan's Coliseo José Miguel Agrelot into a homecoming party that's part cultural phenomenon, part musical spectacle. The residency is historic: thirty shows running weekends only until mid-September, with special guests like Lebron James and local legends dropping by. The demand has been so overwhelming that the first nine shows were reserved exclusively for Puerto Rico residents—reinforcing the show's vibe as a family reunion for the island.Bad Bunny surprised fans on Monday by dropping a new single, "Alambre Púa," which blasted onto streaming platforms just hours after he debuted it live for three consecutive nights as the residency's opener. The track channels high energy and sits beside hits from his chart-topping album "Debí Tirar Más Fotos," which remains a fixture in the Billboard Top 10 as of July and continues to rack up hundreds of millions of streams. Benito's musical set each night features a marathon thirty-song performance—no intermissions, just pure intensity as he swings through reggaeton, trap, salsa, and Puerto Rican traditional sounds. The residency isn't confined to the arena. Outside, the energy spills into street parties known as "San Benito Fest" where ticketless fans join the celebration with food trucks, DJs, pop-up photo booths, and local artists selling exclusive merchandise. International brands like RITZ and Wendy's are partying along, launching themed promotions and giveaways to match the residency's unique vibe—a free-for-all overflow that has made Puerto Rico one of the hottest travel destinations online this August. According to LATV, mentions of "Bad Bunny" have surged on Tinder, resulting in record-breaking swipes and a spike in tourism, showing just how much Benito's residency has influenced the island far beyond the music scene.Social media is ablaze. Viral posts and reels have captured iconic moments, including celebrities and fans shouting out the now-famous phrase “¡Acho, PR es otra cosa!”—a rallying cry of pride and joy that Bad Bunny has made central to the experience. Even global stars like Kylian Mbappé have joined in, underlining the event's far-reaching influence. Instagram feeds are flooded with behind-the-scenes glimpses and reactions. A recent viral post playfully calls Bad Bunny "my baby daddy," racking up tens of thousands of likes and comments, a sign of Benito's unmatched charisma and connection with his audience.Bad Bunny's influence isn't restricted to music and parties. He will soon appear in Adam Sandler's "Happy Gilmore 2," adding “actor” to his already rich resume. Meanwhile, his music continues to break streaming records, as ChartMasters shows, holding strong with billions of plays for singles and albums released earlier this year.Fans are sharing moments from the 20th show last night, including images tagged by official Bad Bunny news accounts and fan stories about the unique inclusivity and energy of the residency. The residency has been described as a "living, breathing tribute to Puerto Rican identity, music, and joy," uniting generations in a celebration that amplifies the heart of the island. The phrase "No Me Quiero Ir De Aquí" on the big screens sums up how everyone feels—no one wants this chapter to end.Listeners, thank you for tuning in. It's August 21, 1982, and Dave and Milt are back in the Time Machine, swimming in the Billboard Top 10 like it's the world's most awkward pool party. Chicago is apologizing all over the place with “Hard to Say I'm Sorry,” Fleetwood Mac is politely asking you to “Hold Me,” and Survivor is still living off that “Eye of the Tiger” Rocky money. Along the way, we detour into soda-related TikTok challenges (yes, apparently Sprite is dangerous now), celebrity death news (spoiler: not good news), and listener emails that range from insightful to “are you sure you hit send on the right show?” You'll also get trivia, remakes, a live “Kids in America” cameo from Billy Joe Armstrong, and a heated swap-out session where we boot some Top 10 squatters in favor of better songs from the same era. We break down Chicago's yacht-rock-adjacent apology, Fleetwood Mac's post-breakup awkward magic, and Steve Miller's “Abracadabra” (spoiler: it's about bras). Then it's all Mellencamp all the time—his name changes, his childhood surgery, his failed acting gigs, and yes, the time Mark Wahlberg tried to rap “Hurt So Good” for reasons unknown to mankind. By the time we get to “Eye of the Tiger,” we've covered Paul Anka swing covers, the movie Swingers (which is not about what you think), and every ridiculous tangent your mother warned you about. We close with some song swaps, listener feedback, and a reflection on how the early '80s somehow made both syrupy ballads and aggressive workout anthems coexist on the same chart without anyone's head exploding. Johnette Napolitano was born on September 22, 1957, in Los Angeles, California. From a young age, she showed signs of being musically gifted—learning songs by ear and absorbing the sounds of everything from show tunes to soul. Her powerful voice and introspective writing would later become the soul of a band that defined a piece of the alternative rock era. But long before that, she was a quiet observer of the world, turning emotion into melody and poetry. In the early ‘80s, Napolitano co-founded the band Dream 6 with guitarist James Mankey. By 1986, they had changed their name to Concrete Blonde, thanks to a suggestion from R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe. It was a perfect fit: hard and soft, beautiful and brutal—just like their music. Johnette's voice, smoky and commanding, cut through the clutter of the decade's pop polish. The band quickly developed a cult following with their blend of post-punk edge and lyrical depth.Concrete Blonde broke into the mainstream with their 1990 album Bloodletting, which captured the darker tones of Napolitano's songwriting. Its hit single “Joey”—a heartbreak anthem about addiction and love—became a signature track, reaching the Billboard Top 20. With its aching delivery and confessional lyrics, “Joey” made Napolitano a powerful voice for emotional realism in rock, and Bloodletting earned gold certification. After the band's initial breakup in 1994, Napolitano didn't slow down. She formed the duo Pretty & Twisted, collaborated with punk icon Holly Vincent in Vowel Movement, and later pursued solo projects. Her solo work—especially the Sketchbook series and the 2007 album Scarred—showcased her knack for raw storytelling, shifting between haunted ballads and fierce rock with the same honesty that marked her earliest work.Concrete Blonde reunited several times over the years, releasing Group Therapy in 2002 and Mojave in 2004, both reflecting a matured sound while staying true to their roots. They toured again from 2010 to 2012, reigniting their bond with longtime fans. Napolitano's performances during these years were filled with the same fire that first drew listeners in—proof that her voice, both literal and artistic, remained as vital as ever.Life in the Desert and Creative LegacyToday, Napolitano lives in Joshua Tree, where she rescues horses, creates visual art, and continues to write music on her own terms. She's contributed songs to film soundtracks and occasionally releases new work, often quietly and independently. Fiercely original and unapologetically herself, Johnette Napolitano has never chased fame—only truth. And in doing so, she's built a body of work that resonates deeply with those who've loved, lost, and lived out loud.@ConcreteBlondeOfficialWebsite.com

Strap into the time machine and set the dial for July 1986, a time when Top Gun ruled the box office, synthesizers ruled the airwaves, and Kenny Loggins ruled… something. In this episode, Milt and Dave wade knee-deep through the Billboard Top 10 from a summer that gave us everything from Loggins' “Danger Zone” (still trying to make aviator sunglasses cool) to Simply Red's “Holding Back the Years” (still holding back… the energy). Expect the usual: unsolicited nostalgia, suspiciously convenient personal stories, and yes, Milt somehow manages to rhyme “Spinal Tap” with “Trader Joe's nap.” Don't ask. Highlights include: A passionate defense of Janet Jackson's “Nasty,” because someone had to. A soul-searching breakdown of Billy Ocean's “There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry),” which succeeds. It does indeed break down. Two grown men pretending to know the difference between Howard Jones and Howard Johnson. And the moment Peter Gabriel's “Sledgehammer” rolls in and flattens the competition like, well, a sledgehammer. Plus: Johnny-themed trivia (because there are apparently way more songs about guys named Johnny than anyone needed), some light shade thrown at the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and a very necessary refreshing of the chart — where Dave and Milt save the Top 10 from itself by swapping in some ‘80s underdogs. Are you still reading these silly show notes? Honestly, bless your heart. You're a true Time Machiner. Or you're just really bored at work. Anyway, on this week's episode, Dave and Milt climb into the Time Machine and rocket back to June 21, 1975 — the land of lava lamps, fringe vests, and an absolutely bonkers Billboard Top 10 Albums chart. We're talkin' Elton, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Beach Boys, and even Alice Cooper giving us all the Welcome-to-My-Nightmare vibes (spoiler: it's not a lullaby). But wait — Milt's back from Africa! That's right, our Chartmeister went on a literal safari. Lions. Giraffes. Possibly cursed sand. He's got stories, and Dave is mildly concerned for his health and sanity. Oh, and intern Jack "The Fact Machine" Nathanson drops in to host a chaotic 80s music trivia quiz that somehow leads to Warrant, Mr. Roboto, David Lee Roth, and yes, Michael Bolton co-writing a KISS song. You can't make this stuff up. The episode ends (because it has to) with the boys politely kicking some albums off the list and replacing them with stuff they actually like. Sorry, Chicago, but y'all were in your weird phase.

In this radical episode of Past Tens: A Top 10 Time Machine, Dave and Milt hop in their DeLorean — flux capacitor fully operational — and set the date for June 16, 1984. They're not just cruising through the Billboard Top 10; they're living it like extras in Footloose. The episode kicks off with a heartfelt and totally tubular tribute to Dave's late father — think The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi, but with better dad jokes. From there, it's a parade of parachute pants, popped collars, and personal memories as they discuss the artists who ruled the airwaves: Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, and Cyndi Lauper — basically the Justice League of 1984 pop. Of course, it wouldn't be Past Tens without a few twists. There's a Playdate Quiz that would stump even The NeverEnding Story's Atreyu, a musical mashup segment that's more chaotic than Gremlins after midnight, and their signature song substitution game — think Indiana Jones swapping the idol for a bag of sand, but with Huey Lewis tracks. Some highlights: 00:54: A heartfelt memorial for Dave's father, complete with more heart than Kevin Bacon dancing alone in a warehouse. 08:33: Pop Culture Highlights: Ghostbusters hit theaters, Purple Rain was on the horizon, and nobody put Baby in a corner (yet — Dirty Dancing was still a few years away). 15:22: Countdown kicks off — Night Ranger's “Sister Christian” taught us all what "motoring" really means (spoiler: it's not what your dad thinks). 38:01: Musical Mashups — imagine Footloose meets Thriller but performed by the cast of Revenge of the Nerds. 39:22: Laura Branigan's “Self Control” — the unofficial soundtrack to sneaking out past curfew in 1984. 44:54: Huey Lewis reminds everyone that the heart of rock and roll is still beating — even if it's wearing leg warmers. 59:33: Steve Perry's “Oh Sherrie,” a ballad so powerful it could get E.T. to phone home twice. 01:19:50: Cyndi Lauper's “Time After Time” — guaranteed to make even the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man misty-eyed. 01:23:15: Cyndi's legendary ties to the wrestling world — she could literally have body-slammed a Goonie. Milt also teases his upcoming trip to Africa, though we're unclear whether he'll be traveling by Toto song or Temple of Doom bridge. It's a journey that's equal parts nostalgia, musicology, and a John Hughes movie montage. Crank up your Walkman and join the ride — just don't feed Milt after midnight.

Send us a textSteve Smith of the Vapors stops by to discuss their latest release, Wasp in the Jar, their upcoming tour, and their longevity career. *****Best known for their massive 1980 worldwide hit “Turning Japanese,” The Vapors continue to bring their individually styled brand of music to fans old and new in the form of high-quality live performances and the ongoing development of critically acclaimed new material. The band, formed in 1979, had already gained a substantial live following around their hometown of Guildford, Surrey and in London, when they were brought to large UK audiences with their support slot on The Jam's iconic 1979 “Setting Sons” tour, by then managed by The Jam's Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller's father John. The release of debut single “Prisoners” in 1979 was followed by 1980's “Turning Japanese “alongside the classic first album New Clear Days. The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London's Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020's comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they're stronger and more relevant than ever. The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl's “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). They continue to deliver polished shows featuring songs spanning their entire 45-year history. Website: https://www.thevapors.co.uk/Lost 80s Live Tickets: https://lost80slive.com/buy-now/*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D.
