Send us a textSteve Smith of the Vapors stops by to discuss their latest release, Wasp in the Jar, their upcoming tour, and their longevity career. *****Best known for their massive 1980 worldwide hit “Turning Japanese,” The Vapors continue to bring their individually styled brand of music to fans old and new in the form of high-quality live performances and the ongoing development of critically acclaimed new material. The band, formed in 1979, had already gained a substantial live following around their hometown of Guildford, Surrey and in London, when they were brought to large UK audiences with their support slot on The Jam's iconic 1979 “Setting Sons” tour, by then managed by The Jam's Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller's father John. The release of debut single “Prisoners” in 1979 was followed by 1980's “Turning Japanese “alongside the classic first album New Clear Days. The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London's Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020's comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they're stronger and more relevant than ever. The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl's “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). They continue to deliver polished shows featuring songs spanning their entire 45-year history. Join host Sandy Kaye to discover the story of Jay and the AmericansLong before arena tours and pop stardom, Sandy Yaguda—later known by his stage name Sandy Deanne—was just a Brooklyn kid with a dream, harmonizing with friends on the street corner. As a founding member of Jay and the Americans, Sandy helped shape one of the most enduring vocal groups of the 60s, delivering classics like “This Magic Moment,” “Come a Little Bit Closer,” and the unforgettable “Cara Mia.” But Sandy's journey wasn't just about chart hits—it was about survival, reinvention, and ultimately reclaiming a name and legacy that defined an era.In this episdoe we explore Sandy's life in rich detail—from his early days growing up in the working-class neighborhoods of Brooklyn, through the meteoric rise of Jay and the Americans, and into the turbulent times that followed their initial success. Sandy was born in Brooklyn- a place where doo-wop was more than a sound—it was a way of life. He grew up on street-corner harmony and fell in love with the layered vocals and emotional intensity of rhythm and blues. While still in high school, he formed a vocal group with classmates. Their mutual love for music brought them together in basements, school hallways, and street corners, practicing complex harmonies and dreaming of stardom.Originally named The Harbor Lites, the group tried out different names and lead singers before settling into what would eventually become Jay and the Americans. But first, they needed a "Jay."They found their original “Jay” in Jay Traynor, a smooth-voiced singer who helped bring the group's early material to life. With Traynor on vocals, the group recorded their first hit, "She Cried," which soared to the Billboard Top 10 in 62. That success put them on the map, earning them opening gigs for heavyweights like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.Despite the breakthrough, Jay left the group soon after, disillusioned with the pressures of sudden fame. The band then discovered David Blatt, a charismatic young singer who would become the new “Jay”—and go on to be known as Jay Black. With Black's commanding vocals, Jay and the Americans evolved from a promising doo-wop act into pop legends.Jay and the Americans became regulars on TV everywhere.Their slick stage presence, powerful vocal blend, and boy-next-door charm made them one of the most beloved groups of the decade. By the early 70s, musical tastes had shifted. Psychedelic rock, protest anthems, and heavier guitar-driven sounds began to dominate the charts. Jay and the Americans, with their romantic, harmony-driven style, began to fade from the mainstream. The group disbanded in 73.Jay Black went on performing solo under the name “Jay and the Americans,” believing he had the legal right to use it. Sandy focused on behind-the-scenes work in the music industry, producing and managing other acts. Still, the legacy of Jay and the Americans never left him.In the early 2000s, Sandy Yaguda, along with Howie Kane and Marty Sanders, initiated a legal battle to reclaim the name “Jay and the Americans” and in a court ruling, the original members won the rights to the name. They recruited a new lead singer, Jay Reincke, and the reformed Jay and the Americans began touring again.Today, Sandy Yaguda continues to perform with Jay and the Americans to sold-out audiences across the U.S. proving that good music truly never fades.Sandy Yaguda is the custodian of a golden sound. This episode is a must-listen for fans of classic pop, 60s nostalgia, and anyone who's ever wondered what happens after the hits stop coming—but the music never dies.

Rhode Island's multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, will be celebrating 50+ years in the business with the release of "Sound of Waves," a new 13 song album, their first in 37 years. In 1982, John Cafferty was commissioned to write and perform the soundtrack for a film that turned out to be "Eddie and the Cruisers,' a rock cult classic with a triple platinum soundtrack. Cafferty's soulful, raspy voice propelled the movie's theme "On the Dark Side" to # 1 on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" rose into the Top 10 of the Billboard AC charts. Today John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour around the world. That tour will bring them to NYC for an album release concert at the Cutting Room on Thursday, April 10th, the same date as the album release, from Moonstone Music. According to Cafferty, the new album almost didn't happen. After almost four decades of not writing and recording new music, he was encouraged by Bruce Springsteen to do it again. Over the years, Cafferty and company have jammed on stage with many of the greats of rock and roll, including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Dion, and opened on tour with the Beach Boys, Foreigner, and Bryan Adams. Starting May 28th, Cafferty joins Rick Springfield on his "I Want My 80s Tour" for selected dates, along with John Waite and Wang Chung."The 'Sound of Waves' album is a celebration of a lifetime legacy as musicians and 50+ years as a band. The songs are newly written with a respectful reflection of colors from an era of music's diverse history and the precious life moments and loving relationships that have served as our hearts' inspiration," said Cafferty. The title track from the group's 1985 album, "Tough All Over" became their second # 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts and the song "C-I-T-Y" reached the Billboard Top 20. Over the years, John has placed 35 songs in major motion pictures. They included Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky "IV," and "Cobra." The Farrelly Brothers hit films "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber Too," & Eddie and the Cruisers I and II. The lead single from the group's upcoming album is "Day In the Sun," which was spotlighted in Peter Farrelly's film "Rick Stanicky." Here's a video link of a live performance: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1xHCR8BDus All songs on the new release were written by Cafferty. The Rhode Island rockers put out their first "Greatest Hits" album in 2022 on Iconoclassic Records. In addition to band founder Cafferty, two original members remain in the group. They are guitarist Gary Gramolini and saxophonist Michael "Tunes" Antunes. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

We're at it again! Excavations below the crust of some pretty simple-minded teenage pap that seemed to occupy the Billboard Top 100 in the year 1960. Marketers had found the right blend of country, rhythm, pop, sentimentality and rock and this led to a churning out of as much and as they could as fast was possible. The result was a mixed bag: quantity over quality in most cases. We call it spit-balling these days. We'll dig into the substrate of popular music that did not make the Top 40, and in some cases, the Top 100. We'll hear from Wanda Jackson, Billy Bland, Donnie Brooks, Johnny Preston, Esther Phillips, and a few dozen others in this week's show. Not withstanding what we do here, we have to consistently remind ourselves of the classic Tony Soprano quote: “'Remember when' is the lowest form of conversation.” So, we're mining for the ones we don't necessarily remember. And the big news? It's a rare two-parts-over-two-weeks extravaganza. Hope you can join in

— Tuned In is an inspiring story of one man's relentless pursuit of a dream, and a revealing testimony to the power of music in all our lives. The unique confluence of Jim Wilson's two careers - piano technician/confidant to the stars and a globally successful recording artist - has led to extraordinary experiences with some of the world's most exalted music legends: singing Beatle songs with Paul McCartney, limo rides with Elton John, road trips with Carole King, and horseback riding with Dan Fogelberg. But beyond this everyman's unique telling of intimate celebrity tales, Tuned In is an inspiring story of one man's relentless pursuit of a dream, and a revealing testimony to the power of music in all our lives. Emerging from a troubled childhood in a broken West Texas home, a young man moves to Los Angeles to pursue fame and fortune as a singer-songwriter. He soon strays from his mission when his piano tuning sideline blossoms into a career as piano technician to the entertainment industry's biggest names. His help in the development of the world's first MIDI-adapter for acoustic piano leads to him sharing adventures, sessions, meals, and laughs with dozens of his childhood heroes. His front row seat provides him with a rare and fascinating view into their creative processes. But when his world is shattered by his dearest friend's sudden and untimely death, he is forced to question the true meaning of success. He returns to his heart's purpose, takes a leap into the unknown, and sets out on a solo career, recording and performing his signature style of piano-featured instrumentals. Valeria interviews Jim Wilson — He is an Acclaimed Composer and Performer — the author of TUNED IN: Memoirs Of A Piano Man: Behind The Scenes With Music Legends And Finding The Artist Within. Jim Wilson could have simply dismissed himself as a competent piano tuner-technician, even an exceptional one. But he was, and is, so much more. From a broken home in Amarillo, Texas to a multi-award-winning recording artist, Jim Wilson's journey is a captivating tale of showbiz glamour, personal tragedy, self-discovery, and dogged determination. And, as is typical of Jim Wilson, he's turned out to be a pretty good wordsmith. Tuned-In: Memoirs of a Piano Man is a page-turner and a life-changer. It's a self-help book in the form of an autobiography. It is entertaining, revealing and full of lessons for musicians, fans, and all readers. Jim Wilson's life direction was set when he was given a guitar at age 7, then began composing songs at age 9. Soon after moving from West Texas to LA in his early 20's, he gained a reputation as a respected piano technician, catering to the highest echelon of the music industry. Jim helped develop the first MIDI-adapter for acoustic piano in the 80's, which became an instant hit with artists and studios around the world. It was the shocking, untimely death of his closest friend that forced Jim to question the whole purpose of his life. With the love and support of his musical heroes — most significantly his friend and mentor, Dan Fogelberg — Jim set out on a solo career, composing, recording and performing his signature style of piano-featured instrumentals. Four of Jim's ten recordings have hit the Billboard Top-20, he's had two PBS specials, and his music has been streamed over 75 million times by fans around the globe. He was recently made a “Lifetime Member” of the Recording Academy. He enjoys scuba diving, skiing, pilot lessons, and mountain biking. Tuned In is Jim's first book. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Steve Singiser. Steve is formerly a contributing editor at Daily Kos Elections and now is a contributor at The Downballot.Steve's Music Pick: Def LeppardDo you wanna get rocked? If the answer is yes and the decade was the 1980s, it's likely Def Leppard was at least partially responsible for the rocking. With two massive albums released four years apart, the band's songs provided the soundtrack for a generation.Pyromania lit the fuse, so to speak, with “Photograph” bursting through televisions on MTV and with “Foolin'” and “Rock of Ages” cracking the Billboard Top 40 chart. The production skills and songwriting savvy of “Mutt” Lange was key. A de-facto sixth band member, his contributions transformed the group from a solid British hard rock/heavy metal band to one that took over the world with massive pop/rock crossover success. Infinite hooks, layered vocals, processed everything, pre-choruses everywhere -- those are Lange trademarks that helped lure in listeners.Hysteria followed after a number of setbacks and delays. Drummer Rick Allen lost an arm and Lange initially pulled out of the project due to exhaustion. But once things came together, the album took off like a rocket. “Pour Some Sugar on Me” was the jet fuel to power Hysteria after initial just okay sales numbers. Eventually seven singles were released, including #1 hit “Love Bites,” fulfilling the ambitions of creating a hard rock Thriller.Unfortunately, guitarist Steve Clark lost his battle with alcoholism shortly afterward. His songwriting contributions and playing style are missed from future releases, though Vivian Campbell has proven to be a solid replacement. There's plenty to love from the first two albums, prior to the band's breakthrough, and Adrenalize and Euphoria still contain highlights (we urge you to check out “Paper Sun” from the latter album). This is also a story about loyalty. Def Leppard's line-up has been remarkably consistent through the years. When Rick Allen lost his arm, band members gave him the time to recover and learn to play in a different way. When “Mutt” Lange couldn't produce Hysteria, the band realized the project couldn't move forward without him. When Steve Clark needed help, the band gave him time off and got him into rehab as many times as possible. The band still is a huge draw on tour because songs as good as these don't die. Listen in, enjoy the tunes and feel free to rock, rock ‘til you drop.
“Forwards” For more than 40 years the Welsh band the Alarm have been one of the most consistent acts on the planet, playing songs with conviction, heart and belief. With almost 20 studio albums under their belts, along with a discography that includes live albums, box sets and EPs, The Alarm are one of those bands where you pretty much want everything they put out. From albums like Declaration to Strength to their brand new one Forwards, The Alarm are a completist's band. Speaking of Forwards, it's a remarkable record—singer/songwriter Mike Peters has never sounded better, his voice alive with muscle and belief. The Welsh band have had a remarkable career that's filled with endless highlights-- they toured with U2 and Bob Dylan, played at Queen's Live at Wembley concert in 1986, been on IRS's the Cutting Edge and American Bandstand, had hit singles all over the world even cracking the Billboard Top 50 here in the States, and wrote a song that became the official Welsh anthem for Euro 2020. Dave and Milt take a trip back to February 2nd, 1980, to review and critique the Billboard Top 10 hits of that week. They find Tom Petty's 'Don't Do Me Like That,' Rupert Holmes' 'Escape (The Pina Colada Song)', Kenny Rogers' 'Coward of the County,' and Michael Jackson's 'Rock With You,' among others. They also engage in playful banter and trivia about musical notes and historical facts, recap the top songs of the week, and make their substitutions for songs they feel deserve a spot in the top 10 but didn't quite make it.
