She began taking piano and singing lessons as a child and participated in various musical productions, setting the stage for a lifelong career in entertainment.Career BreakthroughDaley's big break came when she joined Bob Hope's USO tours, performing for American troops around the world. Her participation in these tours, including the famous "Bob Hope Christmas Shows" in Vietnam, brought her significant exposure and acclaim. She performed for over 100,000 GIs, earning a place in the hearts of many servicemen and women.Music CareerAdored for her singular magic of making what's classic contemporary again, Jan Daley is the most multi-talented and beautiful "Best Kept Secret" in entertainment today. The multi-talented singer-songwriter and actress is well known as one of the music industry's “best-kept secrets.” Taking the iconic sound of traditional Jazz and reinventing it for the modern audience to enjoy, her impact has been global. She hits the sweet spot between authentic, personal presentation with just the right amount of razzle-dazzle.Jan is a highly prolific artist, often juggling multiple projects at once. She's currently working on a “Best of” album which pulls a number of smash hits from her top-selling CDs. The versatile singer has already landed a Billboard No. 1 for her album “The Way of a Woman,” (penned by Jan herself, among 5 other songs), including tracks from her acclaimed “Where There's Hope” CD which was backed by the Les Brown Jr. Swinging Big Band and the Springfield Symphony. Not to mention featuring songs from her “Broadway Memories” CD that Broadway World Magazine raves, “Daley is a mastery of dynamic vocal range… she delivers these gems in a whole new & refreshing way… Be prepared to be enthralled!” Jan has a few surprises for us, similarly from her “Live” CD, with the beautiful “The Prayer” duet and to top it off, a few Christmas Songs from her Billboard's No. 4 "Home for Christmas" CD. Expect timeless tracks, beautiful duets, and an impressive vocal range in this show-stopping CD that shows us why Jan remains center stage in the traditional Jazz world. “The Best of Jan Daley CD” has something for everyone!Miss Daley made her major breakthrough in the music industry in 2017 and 2018. Working with legendary Motown producer and writer Michael B. Sutton, she put out her first EP “When Sunny Gets Blue.” It was a worldwide hit, landing her a top spot on the AOL Smooth Music Jazz Chart. She followed it up with Billboard No. 1, “The Way of a Woman” and months later “Home for Christmas,” which rode No. 4 on the Billboard Top 10 Jazz Charts for over two months — receiving rave reviews on radio stations across the world.Recent AccomplishmentsIn 2023, Jan Daley was inducted into The Women Songwriters Hall of Fame in Washington DC. Her new song, "The Girls in Love," caught fire and went No. 1 on the International Country, Roots, and Top 40 Chart, reaching an audience of over 4 million. Miss Daley set records as the No. 1 Independent Artist for 10 weeks. The country remix of "Way of a Woman" topped out at No. 24 on the Country Music chart. Strap into the time machine and set the dial for July 1986, a time when Top Gun ruled the box office, synthesizers ruled the airwaves, and Kenny Loggins ruled… something. In this episode, Milt and Dave wade knee-deep through the Billboard Top 10 from a summer that gave us everything from Loggins' “Danger Zone” (still trying to make aviator sunglasses cool) to Simply Red's “Holding Back the Years” (still holding back… the energy). Expect the usual: unsolicited nostalgia, suspiciously convenient personal stories, and yes, Milt somehow manages to rhyme “Spinal Tap” with “Trader Joe's nap.” Don't ask. Highlights include: A passionate defense of Janet Jackson's “Nasty,” because someone had to. A soul-searching breakdown of Billy Ocean's “There'll Be Sad Songs (To Make You Cry),” which succeeds. It does indeed break down. Two grown men pretending to know the difference between Howard Jones and Howard Johnson. And the moment Peter Gabriel's “Sledgehammer” rolls in and flattens the competition like, well, a sledgehammer. Plus: Johnny-themed trivia (because there are apparently way more songs about guys named Johnny than anyone needed), some light shade thrown at the Fabulous Thunderbirds, and a very necessary refreshing of the chart — where Dave and Milt save the Top 10 from itself by swapping in some ‘80s underdogs. Are you still reading these silly show notes? Honestly, bless your heart. You're a true Time Machiner. Or you're just really bored at work. Anyway, on this week's episode, Dave and Milt climb into the Time Machine and rocket back to June 21, 1975 — the land of lava lamps, fringe vests, and an absolutely bonkers Billboard Top 10 Albums chart. We're talkin' Elton, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Beach Boys, and even Alice Cooper giving us all the Welcome-to-My-Nightmare vibes (spoiler: it's not a lullaby). But wait — Milt's back from Africa! That's right, our Chartmeister went on a literal safari. Lions. Giraffes. Possibly cursed sand. He's got stories, and Dave is mildly concerned for his health and sanity. Oh, and intern Jack "The Fact Machine" Nathanson drops in to host a chaotic 80s music trivia quiz that somehow leads to Warrant, Mr. Roboto, David Lee Roth, and yes, Michael Bolton co-writing a KISS song. You can't make this stuff up. The episode ends (because it has to) with the boys politely kicking some albums off the list and replacing them with stuff they actually like. Sorry, Chicago, but y'all were in your weird phase.

Another day, another TRPE and today we clock in at over 2.5 hours. Today we start by covering the little holiday that could "Juneteenth" and the fact that essentially zero commercial businesses are actually taking it seriously. In the spirit of Juneteenth, we get into all the celebratory cookouts and why the black folks who organize them never ever have all the things they need to actually feed the people in attendance.  Additional topics for today's show include how the content game has turned into a streamer's economy equipped with copycats, haters and groupies. We salute Kai, Speed and DDG for absolutely killing it and predict what may be next. We also take a microscopic look at why Future IS NOT in The Big 3, a review of Lil Baby's WHAM Tour and a deep drive onto where his "Baby fell off" narratives originated from *COUGHS* LIVE NATION.  We round out the show discussing the Billboard Top 50 R&B list, the Breezy Bowl, Jackson 5 Reunion Tour and a historic look at the Clips/Pharrell/StarTrak/ReUp Gang/Good Music/Rocnation hate train against YMCMB/Birdman/Wayne/Drake/Travis Scott and why this shit will continue to be an issue FOREVER!! This includes a 2025 look at the MELTDOWN verse from Travis's Utopia album that has the rap game all fucked up… yet again. All this and more on today's episode of The Realest Podcast Ever. Goode" to less-well-remembered hits like The Four Preps' "Big Man". But the guys ended up going deeper when Justin start pulling in the top songs on the R&B and country charts as well, realizing that mid-1958 is a point of huge musical overlap between the major mainstream genres.  Then, the guys also discuss some of the other Elvis-related items featured in this historical issue of this music industry magazine, including a contemporary review of King Creole and an incredibly fascinating story about Elvis bootlegs pressed into unconventional materials in Soviet Russia in the 1950s! In this radical episode of Past Tens: A Top 10 Time Machine, Dave and Milt hop in their DeLorean — flux capacitor fully operational — and set the date for June 16, 1984. They're not just cruising through the Billboard Top 10; they're living it like extras in Footloose. The episode kicks off with a heartfelt and totally tubular tribute to Dave's late father — think The Karate Kid's Mr. Miyagi, but with better dad jokes. From there, it's a parade of parachute pants, popped collars, and personal memories as they discuss the artists who ruled the airwaves: Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Duran Duran, and Cyndi Lauper — basically the Justice League of 1984 pop. Of course, it wouldn't be Past Tens without a few twists. There's a Playdate Quiz that would stump even The NeverEnding Story's Atreyu, a musical mashup segment that's more chaotic than Gremlins after midnight, and their signature song substitution game — think Indiana Jones swapping the idol for a bag of sand, but with Huey Lewis tracks. Some highlights: 00:54: A heartfelt memorial for Dave's father, complete with more heart than Kevin Bacon dancing alone in a warehouse. 08:33: Pop Culture Highlights: Ghostbusters hit theaters, Purple Rain was on the horizon, and nobody put Baby in a corner (yet — Dirty Dancing was still a few years away). 15:22: Countdown kicks off — Night Ranger's “Sister Christian” taught us all what "motoring" really means (spoiler: it's not what your dad thinks). 38:01: Musical Mashups — imagine Footloose meets Thriller but performed by the cast of Revenge of the Nerds. 39:22: Laura Branigan's “Self Control” — the unofficial soundtrack to sneaking out past curfew in 1984. 44:54: Huey Lewis reminds everyone that the heart of rock and roll is still beating — even if it's wearing leg warmers. 59:33: Steve Perry's “Oh Sherrie,” a ballad so powerful it could get E.T. to phone home twice. 01:19:50: Cyndi Lauper's “Time After Time” — guaranteed to make even the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man misty-eyed. 01:23:15: Cyndi's legendary ties to the wrestling world — she could literally have body-slammed a Goonie. Milt also teases his upcoming trip to Africa, though we're unclear whether he'll be traveling by Toto song or Temple of Doom bridge. It's a journey that's equal parts nostalgia, musicology, and a John Hughes movie montage. Crank up your Walkman and join the ride — just don't feed Milt after midnight.

Send us a textSteve Smith of the Vapors stops by to discuss their latest release, Wasp in the Jar, their upcoming tour, and their longevity career. *****Best known for their massive 1980 worldwide hit “Turning Japanese,” The Vapors continue to bring their individually styled brand of music to fans old and new in the form of high-quality live performances and the ongoing development of critically acclaimed new material. The band, formed in 1979, had already gained a substantial live following around their hometown of Guildford, Surrey and in London, when they were brought to large UK audiences with their support slot on The Jam's iconic 1979 “Setting Sons” tour, by then managed by The Jam's Bruce Foxton and Paul Weller's father John. The release of debut single “Prisoners” in 1979 was followed by 1980's “Turning Japanese “alongside the classic first album New Clear Days. The single reached Number 3 in the UK, Number 1 in Australia, and hit the top 10 in both New Zealand and Canada whilst becoming a mainstream Billboard Top 40 hit in the US. The debut album spawned further hits “News At Ten” and” Waiting for the Weekend” before the very different, but equally well received second album “Magnets” arriving in 1981, providing the singles “Spiders” and further hit “Jimmie Jones”, with the band touring extensively in the UK, US and Australia throughout this period. The band parted company late in 1981, with all members going on to have varied and successful careers across the entertainment industry. In 2016, after a decade of Internet clamour for a revival, they announced their reformation for a short series of gigs, including a sell-out show at London's Dingwalls. Over 170 gigs and 2020's comeback album third album Together and several singles later, they're stronger and more relevant than ever. The band continue to write and perform and have completed two headline tours in the UK since the pandemic, as well as appearing at the Pasadena Rose Bowl's “Cruel World” festival in May 2023, touring the US in 2024 and recording their exciting statement fourth album Wasp In A Jar (to be released on 28th February 2025). They continue to deliver polished shows featuring songs spanning their entire 45-year history. Website: https://www.thevapors.co.uk/Lost 80s Live Tickets: https://lost80slive.com/buy-now/*******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Jay and the Americans - The Sandy Yaguda (Deanne) story

A Breath of Fresh Air

Join host Sandy Kaye to discover the story of Jay and the AmericansLong before arena tours and pop stardom, Sandy Yaguda—later known by his stage name Sandy Deanne—was just a Brooklyn kid with a dream, harmonizing with friends on the street corner. As a founding member of Jay and the Americans, Sandy helped shape one of the most enduring vocal groups of the 60s, delivering classics like “This Magic Moment,” “Come a Little Bit Closer,” and the unforgettable “Cara Mia.” But Sandy's journey wasn't just about chart hits—it was about survival, reinvention, and ultimately reclaiming a name and legacy that defined an era.In this episdoe we explore Sandy's life in rich detail—from his early days growing up in the working-class neighborhoods of Brooklyn, through the meteoric rise of Jay and the Americans, and into the turbulent times that followed their initial success. Sandy was born in Brooklyn- a place where doo-wop was more than a sound—it was a way of life. He grew up on street-corner harmony and fell in love with the layered vocals and emotional intensity of rhythm and blues. While still in high school, he formed a vocal group with classmates. Their mutual love for music brought them together in basements, school hallways, and street corners, practicing complex harmonies and dreaming of stardom.Originally named The Harbor Lites, the group tried out different names and lead singers before settling into what would eventually become Jay and the Americans. But first, they needed a "Jay."They found their original “Jay” in Jay Traynor, a smooth-voiced singer who helped bring the group's early material to life. With Traynor on vocals, the group recorded their first hit, "She Cried," which soared to the Billboard Top 10 in 62. That success put them on the map, earning them opening gigs for heavyweights like The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.Despite the breakthrough, Jay left the group soon after, disillusioned with the pressures of sudden fame. The band then discovered David Blatt, a charismatic young singer who would become the new “Jay”—and go on to be known as Jay Black. With Black's commanding vocals, Jay and the Americans evolved from a promising doo-wop act into pop legends.Jay and the Americans became regulars on TV everywhere.Their slick stage presence, powerful vocal blend, and boy-next-door charm made them one of the most beloved groups of the decade. By the early 70s, musical tastes had shifted. Psychedelic rock, protest anthems, and heavier guitar-driven sounds began to dominate the charts. Jay and the Americans, with their romantic, harmony-driven style, began to fade from the mainstream. The group disbanded in 73.Jay Black went on performing solo under the name “Jay and the Americans,” believing he had the legal right to use it. Sandy focused on behind-the-scenes work in the music industry, producing and managing other acts. Still, the legacy of Jay and the Americans never left him.In the early 2000s, Sandy Yaguda, along with Howie Kane and Marty Sanders, initiated a legal battle to reclaim the name “Jay and the Americans” and in a court ruling, the original members won the rights to the name. They recruited a new lead singer, Jay Reincke, and the reformed Jay and the Americans began touring again.Today, Sandy Yaguda continues to perform with Jay and the Americans to sold-out audiences across the U.S. proving that good music truly never fades.Sandy Yaguda is the custodian of a golden sound. This episode is a must-listen for fans of classic pop, 60s nostalgia, and anyone who's ever wondered what happens after the hits stop coming—but the music never dies.

— Tuned In is an inspiring story of one man's relentless pursuit of a dream, and a revealing testimony to the power of music in all our lives. The unique confluence of Jim Wilson's two careers - piano technician/confidant to the stars and a globally successful recording artist - has led to extraordinary experiences with some of the world's most exalted music legends: singing Beatle songs with Paul McCartney, limo rides with Elton John, road trips with Carole King, and horseback riding with Dan Fogelberg. But beyond this everyman's unique telling of intimate celebrity tales, Tuned In is an inspiring story of one man's relentless pursuit of a dream, and a revealing testimony to the power of music in all our lives. Emerging from a troubled childhood in a broken West Texas home, a young man moves to Los Angeles to pursue fame and fortune as a singer-songwriter. He soon strays from his mission when his piano tuning sideline blossoms into a career as piano technician to the entertainment industry's biggest names. His help in the development of the world's first MIDI-adapter for acoustic piano leads to him sharing adventures, sessions, meals, and laughs with dozens of his childhood heroes. His front row seat provides him with a rare and fascinating view into their creative processes. But when his world is shattered by his dearest friend's sudden and untimely death, he is forced to question the true meaning of success. He returns to his heart's purpose, takes a leap into the unknown, and sets out on a solo career, recording and performing his signature style of piano-featured instrumentals. Valeria interviews Jim Wilson — He is an Acclaimed Composer and Performer — the author of TUNED IN: Memoirs Of A Piano Man: Behind The Scenes With Music Legends And Finding The Artist Within. Jim Wilson could have simply dismissed himself as a competent piano tuner-technician, even an exceptional one. But he was, and is, so much more. From a broken home in Amarillo, Texas to a multi-award-winning recording artist, Jim Wilson's journey is a captivating tale of showbiz glamour, personal tragedy, self-discovery, and dogged determination. And, as is typical of Jim Wilson, he's turned out to be a pretty good wordsmith. Tuned-In: Memoirs of a Piano Man is a page-turner and a life-changer. It's a self-help book in the form of an autobiography. It is entertaining, revealing and full of lessons for musicians, fans, and all readers. Jim Wilson's life direction was set when he was given a guitar at age 7, then began composing songs at age 9. Soon after moving from West Texas to LA in his early 20's, he gained a reputation as a respected piano technician, catering to the highest echelon of the music industry. Jim helped develop the first MIDI-adapter for acoustic piano in the 80's, which became an instant hit with artists and studios around the world.  It was the shocking, untimely death of his closest friend that forced Jim to question the whole purpose of his life. With the love and support of his musical heroes — most significantly his friend and mentor, Dan Fogelberg — Jim set out on a solo career, composing, recording and performing his signature style of piano-featured instrumentals. Four of Jim's ten recordings have hit the Billboard Top-20, he's had two PBS specials, and his music has been streamed over 75 million times by fans around the globe. He was recently made a “Lifetime Member” of the Recording Academy. He enjoys scuba diving, skiing, pilot lessons, and mountain biking. Tuned In is Jim's first book. Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are joined by guest Steve Singiser. Steve is formerly a contributing editor at Daily Kos Elections and now is a contributor at The Downballot.Steve's Music Pick: Def LeppardDo you wanna get rocked? If the answer is yes and the decade was the 1980s, it's likely Def Leppard was at least partially responsible for the rocking. With two massive albums released four years apart, the band's songs provided the soundtrack for a generation.Pyromania lit the fuse, so to speak, with “Photograph” bursting through televisions on MTV and with “Foolin'” and “Rock of Ages” cracking the Billboard Top 40 chart. The production skills and songwriting savvy of “Mutt” Lange was key. A de-facto sixth band member, his contributions transformed the group from a solid British hard rock/heavy metal band to one that took over the world with massive pop/rock crossover success. Infinite hooks, layered vocals, processed everything, pre-choruses everywhere -- those are Lange trademarks that helped lure in listeners.Hysteria followed after a number of setbacks and delays. Drummer Rick Allen lost an arm and Lange initially pulled out of the project due to exhaustion. But once things came together, the album took off like a rocket. “Pour Some Sugar on Me” was the jet fuel to power Hysteria after initial just okay sales numbers. Eventually seven singles were released, including #1 hit “Love Bites,” fulfilling the ambitions of creating a hard rock Thriller.Unfortunately, guitarist Steve Clark lost his battle with alcoholism shortly afterward. His songwriting contributions and playing style are missed from future releases, though Vivian Campbell has proven to be a solid replacement. There's plenty to love from the first two albums, prior to the band's breakthrough, and Adrenalize and Euphoria still contain highlights (we urge you to check out “Paper Sun” from the latter album). This is also a story about loyalty. Def Leppard's line-up has been remarkably consistent through the years. When Rick Allen lost his arm, band members gave him the time to recover and learn to play in a different way. When “Mutt” Lange couldn't produce Hysteria, the band realized the project couldn't move forward without him. When Steve Clark needed help, the band gave him time off and got him into rehab as many times as possible. The band still is a huge draw on tour because songs as good as these don't die. Listen in, enjoy the tunes and feel free to rock, rock ‘til you drop.
