City officials, including Mayor Ollie Clemons, defended the increase, citing inflation and a $1.6M budget shortfall. Finance Director Rachel Yarbrough explained the city’s reliance on gas revenue and the need for higher property taxes. Residents voiced concerns about affordability, lack of a city manager, and the sharp increase’s impact, especially on seniors. Clemons assured measures to ease the burden for older residents but emphasized the necessity of the hike to sustain city services. Two more public hearings are scheduled, with the final one on July 14. STORY 2: Advanced voting for Public Service Democratic runoff begins Advanced voting for the Democratic special primary runoff for the District 3 Public Service Commission seat began Monday and runs through July 11, with polling stations open daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Keisha Sean Waites, a former Atlanta City Councilwoman, faces clean-energy advocate Peter Hubbard, with the winner advancing to challenge Republican incumbent Fitz Johnson in November. Waites led the initial primary with 47.2% of the vote but fell short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. Eligible voters include those who voted Democratic or did not vote in the June 17 primary. Election Day is July 15, and voters must bring valid photo ID and vote at their assigned location. STORY 3: Popular eatery Tin Drum expands to Kennesaw Tin Drum Asian Kitchen has opened a new location in Kennesaw at 1155 Barrett Parkway, offering a variety of Asian dishes from China, Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Popular menu items include the Singapore curry chow mein and sesame chicken rice bowl, alongside an expansive boba tea bar featuring favorites like brown sugar pearl milk tea. Founded in 2003 by Steven Chan, the restaurant aims to inspire and delight customers with its inclusive mission. Franchise managers Taran and Ramneek Singh, longtime fans, are excited to bring Tin Drum to Kennesaw. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. Break: INGLES 1 STORY 4: Austell man shot, killed on Fourth of July Cobb Police are investigating the fatal shooting of Cody Chavous, 33, of Austell, in Mableton on Friday. Officers responded to reports of a shooting at 300 Concepts 21 Circle, where they found Chavous with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital but later died. The Major Crimes Unit is leading the investigation and urges anyone with information to call 770-499-3945. STORY 5: Mableton residents could see new tax as city grapples with $9.5M county agreement Mableton Mayor Michael Owens plans to propose a special service district (SSD) tax to cover a $9.5M payment to Cobb County for police and transportation services through 2026. The SSD would levy a citywide millage rate, targeting funds specifically for public safety. Owens emphasized transparency and fairness, aiming to avoid a general property tax. The city must pay $3M by May 2026 and $6.5M by December 2026, with collections starting soon. Owens seeks a long-term deal with Cobb to stabilize costs and avoid annual renegotiations. The SSD proposal will go before the City Council within 90 days, with revenue projections expected by year-end. Break: STORY 6: Red Cross: Make an immediate difference by giving blood or platelets now The American Red Cross urges donors to give blood or platelets this summer, with Type O blood most needed. Severe weather and summer challenges can deplete supplies, making donations crucial for trauma patients and others. Donors can schedule appointments via RedCrossBlood.org, the Blood Donor App, or 1-800-RED CROSS. Those who donate by July 14 will receive Red Cross x goodr sunglasses, while donors from July 15-31 will get a Fandango Movie Reward. Upcoming Cobb County blood drives run through August, with locations including Marietta, Austell, Kennesaw, and Acworth. All blood types are needed, and donors must bring valid ID. Use RapidPass to save time by completing pre-donation steps online. STORY 7: Cobb EMC considering term limit extension Cobb EMC members will vote this summer on a proposed bylaw amendment to extend board term limits from four to five terms. The amendment, aimed at preventing a complete board turnover within 24 months, was approved 5-3 by the board to appear on the ballot. While some directors support the change to retain institutional knowledge, others, like Rudy Underwood, oppose it, citing prior commitments to term limits. A recent survey showed members are divided, with 49.2% favoring current limits and 43.3% supporting the extension. Voting begins in August, with the final decision at the annual meeting on Sept. 13. Welcome in for another edition of the Morning Espresso from the SDH Network, brought to you by Oglethorpe University, Atlanta's premier undergraduate learning experience and soccer powerhouse.WPSL Pro is going to launch in the fall of 2026 as a 2nd division women's professional league in the United States. Georgia Impact, whose season will start soon in the traditional amateur WPSL summer league, is one of the teams who has filed a LOI to join the league. Cleveland is the latest to join, with leaders from the city's NWSL expansion bid pivoting to WPSL Pro and bringing with them plans to build a $50M, 10K seat stadium in downtown for a women's team and a MLS Next Pro side. Initially, WPSL Pro looked at launching as a 3rd division league, but they will step up after the new USL Super League decided to launch as a 1st division league rather than the 2nd division. This league will provide many more professional opportunities to women and will enhance the player development pathway in the United States, while also creating many more opportunities to work in the game off the field. With Canada's Northern Super League kicking off last night, it's an exciting time for women's professional soccer in this hemisphere. Mikel Arteta and Arsenal handled their business in Madrid yesterday, winning on the night and 5-1 on aggregate to advance to the Champions League semifinals. Madrid is seemingly imploding with petty comments after the loss from players complaining about Arsenal's approach on the night (don't lose 3-0 in the first leg), nasty challenges becoming the norm lately, and increased talk about Carlo Ancelotti leaving the club. Sky Sports reports this morning that he will leave after the Copa del Rey final on April 26. While Xabi Alonso has been talked about for a while as the successor, new reports bring Jurgen Klopp's name into the mix. Inter had to sweat more than Arsenal, but they will join them in the semifinals after a draw last night and a 4-3 win on aggregate over Bayern. The treble is still on for Inter at this stage. Manchester United will face a level of pressure perhaps never known in the second leg of their Europa League quarterfinal with Lyon today. If they don't advance and then go on to win the Europa League and book a place in the next Champions League, they stand to lose out on over £85M in winnings, nearly £20M more in winnings for the Europa League title, and losses in sponsorship agreements for missing out on Europe entirely in the 2025-26 season. For a club that was reportedly close to being out of money on hand by Christmas, can they handle losses of that level? What does next season look like for them if they don't win the Europa League?Atlanta United's U18's defeated Inter in penalties at the Generation adidas Cup Round of 16 yesterday in Florida. In the fifth part of this six-part series on Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf welcomes back guest and good friend Charlie Workmon, President and CEO of Riverstone Logistics. In this episode, Charlie W discusses making the move to take over Riverstone Logistics full time with his full focus and effort.  He discusses the transition as well as asking Charlie M to serve as his formal mentor in 2021.  They discuss the mutually beneficial mentorship meetings that they held every two weeks, which included a formal agenda and walking through the influential Keith J. Cunningham book together, "The Road Less Stupid: Advice from the Chairman of the Board."  Charlie W talked about reflecting on the phrase: Know the game you're playing.  As Charlie W began to embrace the practice of "Thinking Time" that he took from Cunningham's book, he began to see clearly that Riverstone would be a people-centric and a client-centric platform for loving people well.  And not to be the biggest or the best but just to be on the journey and improve a little bit each day.  This belief would eventually be infused into the Company's purpose to love, serve, and improve. In 2021, Charlie W also came to the realization that the Company needed to be well capitalized in order to be able to run further faster.  This realization would eventually lead him to facilitating a transaction and to bring in a sponsor (i.e., a group of investors) who believed in the vision and to come help them take the Company to a completely different level in a way that's meant to love people. Charlie W cited the connection that he made with Harold Baron, the former CEO of Nolan Transportation, and the key leader behind the strategic money and group of private investors who would invest in RLX.  Harold is now the Chairman of the Board of Directors for RLX.   Charlie W reflected on the day that transaction closed in mid October 2021 and the gravity of that transaction.  He knew that they had put the Company in a really good position for the future, and that this was setting the stage to not just survive but to flourish with open hands.  The stage had been set to have rapid growth with strong financial backing.  Riverstone Logistics has seen impressive growth with revenues increasing from $13M in 2020, tripling to $42M in 2021, then doubling to $85M in 2022, more than doubling again in 2023 to $191M, and projected to reach $300M in 2024.  RLX has been recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in Charlotte by the Charlotte Business Journal for the past three years, and they completed their first acquisition late last year. Charlie W says that RLX today is a sunrise company who's best days are ahead of us.  Their operations reach across 31 states and three countries with 650 Extra Milers ("Extra Milers" being the term given to RLX's full-time employees).  RLX is a multi-modal logistics company with a successful Final Mile division as well as a growing brokerage division.  Their big customers are Lowe's, The Home Depot, IKEA, HD Supply, Crate & Barrel, Ashley Store licensees, and GE Appliances.  Charlie W explains that they are playing the part of a company that is set to do business differently.  He says that they have a "Field of Dreams" mindset where they bring key people in ahead of the need while waiting to see if their client would also join the company.  A mindset of "If you build it, they will come."  And, Charlie W says that they strive to over serve their clients, that they're structured to serve and love them well, that they have a transparent cost model, and that they work with their clients to share costs and help rein them in.   And he says that they focus on being open hands, being transparent and reliable, and enroll them on the front end as to what is a fair margin for their services. Charlie W unpacks the inspiration behind the company's Purpose statement "to use our God-given talents and opportunities to love our neighbors, serve our communities and improve our industry," which he and the management team crafted in late 2021. In the fifth part of this six-part series on Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf welcomes back guest and good friend Charlie Workmon, President and CEO of Riverstone Logistics. In this episode, Charlie W discusses making the move to take over Riverstone Logistics full time with his full focus and effort.  He discusses the transition as well as asking Charlie M to serve as his formal mentor in 2021.  They discuss the mutually beneficial mentorship meetings that they held every two weeks, which included a formal agenda and walking through the influential Keith J. Cunningham book together, "The Road Less Stupid: Advice from the Chairman of the Board."  Charlie W talked about reflecting on the phrase: Know the game you're playing.  As Charlie W began to embrace the practice of "Thinking Time" that he took from Cunningham's book, he began to see clearly that Riverstone would be a people-centric and a client-centric platform for loving people well.  And not to be the biggest or the best but just to be on the journey and improve a little bit each day.  This belief would eventually be infused into the Company's purpose to love, serve, and improve. In 2021, Charlie W also came to the realization that the Company needed to be well capitalized in order to be able to run further faster.  This realization would eventually lead him to facilitating a transaction and to bring in a sponsor (i.e., a group of investors) who believed in the vision and to come help them take the Company to a completely different level in a way that's meant to love people. Charlie W cited the connection that he made with Harold Baron, the former CEO of Nolan Transportation, and the key leader behind the strategic money and group of private investors who would invest in RLX.  Harold is now the Chairman of the Board of Directors for RLX.   Charlie W reflected on the day that transaction closed in mid October 2021 and the gravity of that transaction.  He knew that they had put the Company in a really good position for the future, and that this was setting the stage to not just survive but to flourish with open hands.  The stage had been set to have rapid growth with strong financial backing.  Riverstone Logistics has seen impressive growth with revenues increasing from $13M in 2020, tripling to $42M in 2021, then doubling to $85M in 2022, more than doubling again in 2023 to $191M, and projected to reach $300M in 2024.  RLX has been recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in Charlotte by the Charlotte Business Journal for the past three years, and they completed their first acquisition late last year. Charlie W says that RLX today is a sunrise company who's best days are ahead of us.  Their operations reach across 31 states and three countries with 650 Extra Milers ("Extra Milers" being the term given to RLX's full-time employees).  RLX is a multi-modal logistics company with a successful Final Mile division as well as a growing brokerage division.  Their big customers are Lowe's, The Home Depot, IKEA, HD Supply, Crate & Barrel, Ashley Store licensees, and GE Appliances.  Charlie W explains that they are playing the part of a company that is set to do business differently.  He says that they have a "Field of Dreams" mindset where they bring key people in ahead of the need while waiting to see if their client would also join the company.  A mindset of "If you build it, they will come."  And, Charlie W says that they strive to over serve their clients, that they're structured to serve and love them well, that they have a transparent cost model, and that they work with their clients to share costs and help rein them in.   And he says that they focus on being open hands, being transparent and reliable, and enroll them on the front end as to what is a fair margin for their services. Charlie W unpacks the inspiration behind the company's Purpose statement "to use our God-given talents and opportunities to love our neighbors, serve our communities and improve our industry," which he and the management team crafted in late 2021.
