Have you been in mourning? Maybe over a relationship or a job loss. We all go through seasons of grief and mourning. We find the great Samuel in a season of mourning in 1 Samuel 16. God asks Samuel, "How long will you mourn for Saul?" AKA It's time to move on... God loves us, but He wants to see us flourishing in His plans for us and not stopped by our own mourning. KEY VERSES: "The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you mourn for Saul, since I have rejected him as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and be on your way; I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem. I have chosen one of his sons to be king.” 2 But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.” The Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.' 3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what to do. You are to anoint for me the one I indicate.” 4 Samuel did what the Lord said. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembled when they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?” 5 Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. 6 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord's anointed stands here before the Lord.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.” 9 Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has the Lord chosen this one.”10 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 12 So he sent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.” 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David. Samuel then went to Ramah." - 1 Samuel 16:1-13 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. Samuel was told by God "how long will you mourn?" We all go through seasons of mourning, grief, sadness, etc. Without specifics do you feel like you have recently gone through or are going through a time of mourning? And how long is too long when mourning? 2. Joe talked about how Samuel had to enter into the unknown. It can be intimidating to walk into the unknown. How can we trust God while we walk through the unknown? 3. How does it make you feel that God does not need you tot be small in order for Him to be big? (In other words, God is not insecure like Saul was towards Samuel, transformation with God brings us from the small places we are and makes us great) 4. Samuel waits until the 8th man before God says "yes." What do you feel like God is leading you to wait on?

Key Verses: Matthew 26:36 36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37 He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me.” 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.” Yet not what I will, but what you will.” 40 Then he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Couldn't you men keep watch with me for one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 42 He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” 41 Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Night is coming, when no one can work.5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). It is easy to look around at our friends and communities and analyze them, scrutinize them and most commonly talk about them. It is hard to go to people and build them up. It is hard to do something about the problems we see. It is hard to build something that will last.In the Bible there is a man named Nehemiah. Nehemiah lives through the Babylonian empire. Nehemiah is not a pastor or a prophet. Nehemiah is just a dude. He is like you and me. He is somewhat successful. Nothing is special about Nehemiah until he steps into his calling. Nehemiah 1:3-4 "They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept." Many times the direction you receive comes when brokenness is revealed. Do you weep about the things God weeps over? So many dreams are lost in the waiting period. Do not be impatient with the Lord. His timing is always better than ours. Nehemiah 1: 11 "Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” Nehemiah 2:1, "In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before,2 so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.” "I was very much afraid, 3 but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?”4 The king said to me, “What is it you want?” "Then I prayed to the God of heaven, 5 and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.” Where are we going? We are going to the places we came from. Not literally. But we are going back for our friends and for our family. We are going back for our community. We are going to lay bricks for people who are hurting and broken and have no hope. One by one we are going to build. BRICK BY BRICK. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. What was your favorite part about this series? 2. What do you feel like your role is aka how are you going to lay your bricks? 3. What is it that you feel like you mourn over that God also mourns over? 4. Joe mentioned praying for opportunity and favor. Which opportunities do you want to specifically prayer over? Take time to fast. According to the Bible, there are three duties of every Christian: give, pray and fast. Biblical fasting takes a lot of discipline and strength—strength which you can only receive from God. Your private discipline will bring you rewards in Heaven, says Matthew 6. When you give God your first through fasting, prayer and giving at the beginning of the year, you set the course for the entire year. LET ME TELL YOU WHO I AM: Week 3 of the "Let Me Tell You Series." Joe talks about Romans 12:4-8, "For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, 5 so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." We all have different gifts that are to be used for the "body" or Kingdom of God. It is important to understand your gifts to see where you can make the most impact. While your gifting may not be forever, you should aspire to grow with God in your unique talents, gifts, and callings. Discussion Questions: 1. What are you planning on fasting? 2. What are you planning on fasting for? 3. Take time to complete a spiritual gifts assessment (LINK IN INSTA BIO). 4. What were your results? Were you surprised? We are the future. We are courageous. What is cool is they both go hand in hand. The future belongs to the courageous. In our ministry we really want to lead with courage and train people to be courageous. We are designed to create the future. Not only that impacts us but also everyone else. The future belongs to the courageous. The people who are going to make it in the future are the ones who will have the courage to pursue it Solomon in the Bible writes in Ecclesiastes 11 (1-6): "Send your grain across the seas, and in time, profits will flow back to you. 2 But divide your investments among many places, for you do not know what risks might lie ahead. 3 When clouds are heavy, the rains come down. Whether a tree falls north or south, it stays where it falls. 4 Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest. 5 Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother's womb,so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things. 6 Plant your seed in the morning and keep busy all afternoon, for you don't know if profit will come from one activity or another—or maybe both." 1826 Leader, Joe Ross, goes over 6 points the group is going to live by. Discussion Questions: 1. Point #1 said that we are generous. What's an area of your life where you can be more generous? 2. Who are you “investing” in right now? What are you investing in them? 3. Joe talked about being so full of God that we “rain” into others. Do you think you rain into others? What are you pouring into others? Is it godly things or is it harmful things? 4. What work do you think God wants you do? Where are you called to serve? 5. What's a time where you stood firm in your faith? What's a time you didn't? 6. Do you think you miss out on opportunities because you're overanalyzing? What do you think you can do to be in the moment? 7. What is something you need to keep working at? He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?” The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.'” “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” Lying is not new. We can go back to the beginning of time and see some of the very first mistakes made were lies. Today, people are wondering who to trust and have a lack of confidence in people actually telling the truth. We live in an era where people are no longer afraid to distort the truth for their own gain. 1826 Leader, Joe Ross, asks a series of "True or False" questions that are sure to make you think. DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: What was your favorite part about “conspiracy” over the past few weeks? Do you think the people of today are more inclined to telling the truth or distorting it? When you speak to people you disagree with - do you think you approach them informationally or relationally? What does it mean to be created in the image and likeness of God? What do you think your identity is found in? Follow us on instagram for encouragement and more information on upcoming events @1826fc.1826 meets every Tuesday at Faith Chapel in San Diego at 7pm.

1 Peter talks through suffering and not to be surprised when things come our way because the spirit and glory of God RESTS on us (ie. In the middle of suffering, God's caring spirit is shown more than ever) and then Peter gives 3 different types of suffering and why. 1. Consequences – Bad decisions have bad results 2. Persecution – Good decisions may have tough results 3. Circumstances – A broken world affects us In the midst of suffering, we can feel God's presence even more. He cares for us, and sometimes we will not know how much until we are in the midst of painful times. Follow up questions: 1. How have you seen God's caring spirit evident on your life? Or how has God been faithful to you? 2. Have you walked through anything in your life where you came out of the other side of it with a new perspective? If yes, explain! (: 3. What is something that you need to care less about? Or something you've been carrying that you need to give to God?
