First we'll talk about why it is literally impossible for the Bible to contain actual contradictions. Then let's go to the Bible to address the following supposed contradictions in the Bible, cited by historian Marko Marina, Ph.D, at Bart Ehrman's website (https://www.bartehrman.com/contradictions-in-the-bible). 1. The Two Creation Accounts: Genesis 1:1–2:3 (cosmic, structured, 7-day creation sequence) vs. Genesis 2:4–25 (a more anthropocentric story)2. The Number of Animals on the Ark: Genesis 6:19–20 (two of every kind) vs. Genesis 7:2–3 (seven pairs of clean, two unclean)3. The Death of Saul: 1 Samuel 31:4 (fell on his sword) vs. 2 Samuel 1:10 (Amalekite killed him)4. God or Satan Inspired the Census: 2 Samuel 24:1 (God incited David) vs. 1 Chronicles 21:1 (Satan incited David)5. Jesus' Genealogy: Matthew 1:1–17 vs. Luke 3:23–38 – different names, different lineage paths6. The Voice at Jesus' Baptism: Matthew 3:17 (spoken to crowd) vs. Mark 1:11, Luke 3:22 (spoken to Jesus)7. How Many Rooster Crows? Mark 14:30 (before rooster crows twice) vs. Matthew 26:34, Luke 22:34, John 13:38 (before it crows once)8. Judas' Death: Matthew 27:5 (hanged himself) vs. Acts 1:18 (fell headlong and burst open)9. The Day Jesus Died: Synoptics: Passover day (Nisan 15) vs. John: day before Passover (Nisan 14)10. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

It is so comforting to know that no matter what situation we are going through, help is always possible. There is nothing beyond Hashem, and salvation can always come in the blink of an eye. Sometimes what is needed is deeper, more heartfelt prayer. Sometimes what is needed is a heroic act. And sometimes it is a combination of both. We do not know what else we need to do to be zocheh to the yeshuah we are waiting for, but Hashem knows. And we are able to ask Him to please place before us the opportunity to do the deed that will merit us the salvation we are hoping for. We can also ask Hashem to help us recognize that opportunity when it comes, and to give us the strength to rise to it. Everything is possible. Even the hope and belief we place in Hashem is, in itself, a great zechut. Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein related the following story, as it was told to him by the person to whom it happened. A man we will call Yosef shared that his daughter got married two years ago, at the beginning of the month of Nisan. The Shabbat Sheva Berachot was scheduled to take place in a hall in Kiryat Sefer. There were ninety people attending, which meant extensive planning for meals and sleeping arrangements. Finally, Shabbat arrived. While the tables were still being set, the generator suddenly failed and the entire hall went dark. Aside from a few candles, there was complete darkness. The hot plates warming the food shut off, and the refrigerators storing the upcoming meals also stopped working. The men were praying in total darkness, and the person in charge of the hall was running around desperately trying to find a solution. He attempted to locate a non-Jew, relying on a leniency brought in the Rama in cases of great need, but he was unable to find anyone. People nearby arranged for the food to be transferred to functioning refrigerators and hot plates, while everyone worked on strengthening their emunah and accepting that this too was for the best. Suddenly, a young man approached Yosef with an idea. He explained that he lived in the building across from the hall and had a large, beautiful living room with an attached yard. He happily offered to host all ninety guests in his home. Yosef hesitated. "It's only a few days before Pesach," he said. "Your house is surely already cleaned. How can you host ninety men, women, and little children? We would need to bring over all the tables and chairs and set everything up. Your furniture would have to be moved. Things could get damaged. Children will be running around eating chametz. And your own family is about to eat their Shabbat meal. We would be disturbing you tremendously." But the man, like an angel, pleaded again and again. Yosef was still reluctant, until the man finally said, "If you come, our joy will be even greater than yours." Seeing that there was no other viable option, Yosef agreed. Very quickly, everyone pitched in and transferred everything from the hall to the man's home. What followed was an extraordinary evening, far more beautiful than it would have been in the hall. The baal habayit was unbelievably gracious. He moved his own family elsewhere to eat and gave the wedding party full use of his home. Only once during the meal did he come in, and the guests seized the opportunity to thank him and ask how they could ever repay such an incredible kindness. He answered that he had a daughter who was still waiting for a shidduch, and he asked everyone to please give her a berachah that she should find her zivug soon. The entire crowd responded with a heartfelt berachah, filled with deep gratitude. Just a few weeks later, the man called Yosef with wonderful news. His daughter had gotten engaged. The day after the Sheva Berachot, they had received a positive response from a shidduch they were hoping for, and Baruch Hashem, it worked out. They later discovered that the young man had many offers, but when he heard about how this family had taken in ninety guests for a Sheva Berachot just days before Pesach, he chose to say yes. This man performed a heroic act by opening his already Pesach-cleaned home to so many people. That act became the catalyst for the yeshuah he had been longing for, his daughter's engagement. Hashem can always bring salvation. Our role is to pray, to seek out zechuyot, and to ask Hashem to give us the opportunities we need to get them

There are three different opinions about the status of the mincha offering of the omer that is offered for the sake of a different offering. Rav says it is completely disqualified, Reish Lakish holds it is valid, but the obligation to bring the mincha is not fulfilled and a new one must be brought, and Rava holds that it is valid and the obligation is fulfilled. Rav added another disqualified case to the list – a guilt offering of the nazir and leper. After a discussion about why he would distinguish between that guilt offering and a guilt offering for theft or misuse of consecrated property, the Gemara brings a braita that clearly contradicts Rav as it says explicitly that a guilt offering of a leper offered for the sake of the wrong sacrifice is brought on the altar. A difficulty is raised against Reish Lakish's position. If the omer offering that is brought for the sake of the wrong offering does not fulfill its obligation, how can it be offered on the altar as one can only offer on the altar items that can be eaten by Jews and this is an offering from the chadash (new grain) and the chadash is only permitted with the omer offering. Two answers are brought to resolve this difficulty. The first answer is brought by Rav Ada bar Ahava who suggests that since it will be permitted later that day, when the omer offering is brought correctly, it is not considered a forbidden item. Three difficulties are raised against Rav Ada, two are resolved but the last one is not. Rav Papa offers an alternative answer – that the actual omer offering does not permit the chadash, but the illumination of the eastern horizon on that day permits it (16th of Nisan). This suggestion of Rav Papa is further supported by claiming that Rabbi Yochanan and Reish Lakish both agreed that the chadash is permitted from that time and not from the offering of the omer, as is derived from a statement of Reish Lakish. A braita teaches that one can derive from a verse "from the cattle" that a treifa cannot be brought on the altar. However, the braita suggests that it could have been derived by a kal v'chomer, but since one can raise a difficulty against that kal v'chomer, it is derived from a verse. However, it is unclear what the difficulty could have been and the Gemara brings several possible suggestions. But difficulties are raised against each of them.

Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king. Artaxerxes Sends Nehemiah to Jerusalem In the month of Nisan in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was brought for him, I took the wine and gave it to the king. I had not been sad in his presence before, so the king asked me, “Why does your face look so sad when you are not ill? This can be nothing but sadness of heart.” I was very much afraid, but I said to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should my face not look sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins, and its gates have been destroyed by fire?” The king said to me, “What is it you want?”Then I prayed to the God of heaven, and I answered the king, “If it pleases the king and if your servant has found favor in his sight, let him send me to the city in Judah where my ancestors are buried so that I can rebuild it.” Then the king, with the queen sitting beside him, asked me, “How long will your journey take, and when will you get back?” It pleased the king to send me; so I set a time. I also said to him, “If it pleases the king, may I have letters to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, so that they will provide me safe-conduct until I arrive in Judah? And may I have a letter to Asaph, keeper of the royal park, so he will give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel by the temple and for the city wall and for the residence I will occupy?” And because the gracious hand of my God was on me, the king granted my requests. So I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates and gave them the king's letters. The king had also sent army officers and cavalry with me. When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard about this, they were very much disturbed that someone had come to promote the welfare of the Israelites.

Send us a textA nursery rhyme becomes a roadmap to redemption. We walk from Bethlehem's quiet fields to Jerusalem's crowded courts and finally to Revelation's blazing throne room, tracing how Mary's child is the Lamb who fulfills Israel's calendar with pinpoint precision and claims the title deed to history. Angels announce the news to shepherds tending Passover flocks. John the Baptist points with a single word—Behold. And the virgin birth steps out of sentiment and into necessity, establishing the sinless life required for a once‑for‑all sacrifice.Across the final week of Jesus' life, every step lands on ancient promises. On the tenth of Nisan, he is set apart as the true Passover Lamb. For five days, leaders probe and accuse, yet no fault is found. At the very hour lambs are prepared, he is lifted up; at the ninth hour when sacrifices are offered, he declares, “It is finished.” The temple's streams of blood and water echo from his pierced side, and not one bone is broken. Geography joins the testimony: Moriah—Abraham's mountain—becomes the place where substitution is perfected and debt is stamped paid. But the story doesn't end at the cross. John sees a small Lamb—slain, standing, sovereign—with seven horns and seven eyes, worthy to open the scroll and direct the course of human destiny. The Lamb's strength is not bluster; it is holy power. His knowledge is not rumor; it is perfect sight. From creation to Calvary to conquest, he alone is worthy. This is good news for everyone—Jews and Gentiles, women and men, the broken and the self‑assured—because the Lamb who was slain is also the Lamb who shares his victory.Listen to explore the thread that ties manger to altar and altar to throne, to hear how Scripture's symbols become history's schedule, and to consider what it means for a once‑for‑all sacrifice to carry your name. Today we started to read the book of Nehemiah who was in exile in Susa, the capital of the empire of the Medes and  Persians. He is obviously a very special personality for he had become cupbearer to King Artaxerxes – a very responsible and trusted position to ensure the king was not poisoned.Nehemiah records that “… my brothers came … from Judah.  And I asked them … concerning Jerusalem.  And they said to me, ‘The remnant there in the province that survived the exile is in great trouble and shame.  The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed …” [Ch. 1 v.2,3]  The Temple had been rebuilt, as we have just read in Ezra, but nothing else.In reacting to this news, “I sat down and mourned and wept for days …” [v.4].  He is then “praying before the God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments.” [v.4,5]    We prove we mean what we say, especially in loving God, by what we then do.The climax of his prayer is in v.11, “O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayers of your servants who delight to fear your name.”  Do we “delight” in fearing God?  By “name,” we primarily mean – his ‘reputation' toward those who love and therefore serve him truly.  We need to get our minds around this.Chapter 2 tells us that “in the month of Nisan” (4 months later) in serving the king as his cupbearer, but having continuing great sadness about the plight of Jerusalem that “the king said to me, ‘Why is your face sad, seeing you are not sick?  This is nothing but sadness of the heart.'  I was then very much afraid” [v.2]What should we do when we are “very much afraid”?   If we are truly godly, as Nehemiah was, we should instantly pray.  Nehemiah tells the king the cause of his sadness, saying, “Why should not my face be sad when the city, the place of my father's graves, lies in ruins …” [v.3]“Then the king said to me, ‘what are you requesting?' So I prayed to the God of heaven …” [v.4]  What instant and urgent prayer was involved here!   Imagine it!  Nehemiah then asks, “If it please the king, and if your servant has found favour in your sight, that you send me to Judah, to the city of my father's graves that I may rebuild it” [v.5]  The request is granted – because he responded in a godly way although in great fear –– there arose a challenging and wondrous opportunity.  The account that unfolds in this book from hereon is an inspiration to all who are fully committed to serve God at every opportunity.  Do you have that sense of commitment? How much will such be needed as life in this world becomes ever more uncertain – so let us all set our minds on developing that commitment more and more – and the foundation for this is to ‘feed' on God's word every day.

It's Time to Praise Jesus - Matthew 21:1-11THE TIME HAD COME! For 33 years Jesus had come as a pilgrim to the festivals; Now He comes formally presenting Himself as Israel's rightful King – pressing His claims as Israel's King in Israel's capitol!Matthew 21:1-11When the large crowd of the Jews heard that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of Him but also to see Lazarus, whom He had raised from the dead. - Jn. 12:9Jesus reveals His sovereignty - V. 1-5God sovereignly orchestrated the details so that the disciples would find the donkeys, the donkey's owners would give permission to take it, and the colt would let itself be ridden on. Trust Jesus to sovereignly orchestrate details in your life as well! Now in ancient days, kings would often ride a donkey (or mule) into the capitol if they wanted to display that they were the humble servant of their people (1 Kings 1:43-44), or a white horse if they wanted to display that they were the triumphant King.Jesus receive His praise - V. 6-11The disciples probably led the mother in front of the colt, and it followed, bringing Jesus down Olive Mountain into Jerusalem on the 10th day of Nisan, what we now call Palm Sunday. From that ridge Bethlehem was also visible. Perhaps they could see Passover lambs being brought into Jerusalem even as the Lamb of God was going in!Tell all the congregation of Israel that on the tenth day of this month every man shall take a lamb according to their father's houses, a lamb for a household…And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, when the whole congregation of Israel shall kill their lambs at twilight. - Exodus 12:3, 6And you shall take on the first day the fruit of splendid trees, and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. - Leviticus 23:40And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out!” - Luke 19:39-40And now the LORD says, He who formed Me from the womb to be His servant, to bring Jacob back to Him; and that Israel will be gathered to Him – for I am honored in the eyes of the LORD, and God has become My strength – He says, “It is too light a thing that You should be My servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you a Light for the nations, that My salvation may reach to the end of the earth. - God to His Messiah in Isaiah 49:5-6At His second coming Jesus Christ will return and masses within Israel will look on Him whom they pierced and convert in mass (Zech. 12:10; Romans 11:26-27). Then Jesus will rule the world from Jerusalem for 1,000 years, as anticipated in the feast of Tabernacles (Acts 1:6-7; Revelation 19:11-20:6). In the meantime we take the gospel to all peoples (Acts 1:8;, Matt. 28:18-20).

Also, a newborn animal and how it can't be offered and also can't be given as a tithe. Plus, the case of one who does wrong (eating forbidden fat), designates his sin-offering, becomes a heretic (so his designation is negated and the offering is disqualified), and then comes back to faith -- is the offering reinstated? What about someone who loses his cognitive abilities (at the same point where the first one became a heretic), and then he was healed - is the offering reinstated? Both cases are necessary, as the Gemara explains. What if the court rules that the fat isn't actually forbidden? And then retracts the ruling that it was permitted - is that offering disqualified or no? Plus, the time that all the sages agreed.

Saturday, 19 July 2025   At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. And His disciples were hungry, and began to pluck heads of grain and to eat. Matthew 12:1   “In that time, Jesus, He went – the Sabbaths – through the grainfields, and His disciples, they hungered, and they began to pluck kernels and eat” (CG).   In the previous verse, Chapter 11 finished with Jesus' words concerning His yoke being handy and His burden being light. Chapter 12 now begins with, “In that time.”   It is a particular time, noted by the word kairos (a particular time or season) rather than chronos (time as it marches on). In other words, Matthew is highlighting the season in which they are walking. Of this phrase, Barnes notes –   “Luke 6:1 fixes the time more particularly. He says that it was ‘the second Sabbath after the first.' To understand this, it is proper to remark that the ‘Passover' was observed during the month ‘Abib,' or Nisan, answering to the latter part of March and the first of April. The feast was held seven days, commencing on the fourteenth day of the month Exodus 12:1-28; Exodus 23:15, on the "second" day of the paschal week. The law required that a sheaf of ‘barley' should be offered up as the first-fruits of the harvest, Leviticus 23:10-11. From this day was reckoned seven weeks to the feast of ‘Pentecost' Leviticus 23:15-16, called also the feast of weeks Deuteronomy 16:10, and the feast of the harvest, Exodus 23:16. This second day in the feast of the Passover, or of unleavened bread, was the beginning, therefore, from which they reckoned toward the Pentecost. The Sabbath in the week following would be the ‘second Sabbath' after this first one in the reckoning, and this was doubtless the time mentioned when Christ went through the fields.”   Understanding the time of year, Matthew next records, “Jesus, He went – the Sabbaths – through the grainfields.”   There are two new words. The first is sabbaton, the Sabbath. It is the seventh day of the week corresponding to the day of rest from the labors of creation noted in Genesis 2. It became a mandatory requirement for the Hebrew people, being first introduced as such in Exodus 16. It was to be a day of rest, including no secular work of any type.   The word is often in the plural, indicating the weekly nature of the appointment. This is like someone in English saying, “My Sundays are always set for church time.”   The second new word is sporimos, a word coming from sporos, scattering (and thus, sown). As such, it refers to a planted field. While on a Sabbath, Jesus is walking through the fields, which would have included both barley and wheat at this time of year. It was also ready for harvesting. However, He is not alone, as indicated by the words, “and His disciples.”   It is a group of Jesus and His disciples walking through the grainfields. As they did, it says that “they hungered.” This helps to explain the use of the word kairos rather than chronos. One can walk through the grainfields in September, and there won't be anything to harvest. However, at this time of year, there would be stalks all around coming to full maturity. As such, Matthew notes, “and they began to pluck kernels and eat.”   There is another new word here, tilló, to pluck or pick in order to pull off. The word will only be seen here, in Mark 2:23, and Luke 6:1. All three uses refer to the same incident. As for the words, they seem innocuous enough. Here is a group of people walking through the grainfield. As they walk, they are hungry. Because they are hungry, they take the time to pick some grains and eat them.   From our modern thinking, one might think, “What are they doing, they have no right to eat someone else's grain.” That would be incorrect. In the law, it says –   “When you come into your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes at your pleasure, but you shall not put any in your container. 25 When you come into your neighbor's standing grain, you may pluck the heads with your hand, but you shall not use a sickle on your neighbor's standing grain.” Deuteronomy 23:24, 25   Thus, they are doing nothing wrong in eating in this regard as they go through the fields. Their actions are in accordance with the law concerning that particular aspect of the matter.   Life application: Jesus came to fulfill the law. The gospels are a record of His life and actions in relation to the law. This is one of the main purposes for which they are recorded, and it is the reason why there are three separate but similar gospels known as the synoptics.   They provide a witness and testimony to the conduct of the Messiah as He lived under the law. In Leviticus 18:5, it says –   “You shall therefore keep My statutes and My judgments, which if a man does, he shall live by them: I am the Lord.”   From the time of the giving of the law until the time of Jesus, the record of Israel, including every person of Israel, was a record of failure. The law promised life to the one who would do the things of the law. And yet, they all died, generation after generation. Elijah was taken directly to heaven for a particular purpose. If he had remained, he would have died too.   Jesus came. He was born under the law. The gospels record His life under the law, demonstrating that He was without sin. It is the reason why Jesus is alive to this day. He prevailed over the law, even in His death, because His death was in fulfillment of the law. Because of this, He rose again. It is the sure proof that He was without sin and that He is God because all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.   Only God incarnate was born and lived without sin. Therefore, when we see an account about Jesus' life, even if we think there is wrongdoing, such as His disciples picking and eating someone else's grain, we can be certain that what occurs is acceptable according to Scripture. Be sure to think about why the law records things as it does. In it, we will find Jesus' perfection highlighted for us.   Lord God, it is marvelous to think about what You have done, coming under the law that You gave to Israel, living it out perfectly in the Person of Jesus, and then granting us the life that You possess while redeeming us from sin and death. Thank You, O God, for Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Today's daf is sponsored by Rochelle Cheifetz in loving memory of her mother, Chana Cohen, Chana bat Rav Moshe and Tzipora Mashbaum, on her 4th yartzeit. "You graced us all with your glorious smile, innate wisdom and beautiful neshama. To say that you are missed every day is an understatement." Today's daf is for the refuah shleima of Elad ben Netta. The Gemara questions Rabbi Yochanan's statement that one only receives lashes for eating maaser sheni outside Jerusalem after it was brought into Jerusalem, based on a derivation from Rabbi Yosi's words ina braita. The Gemara resolves this difficulty by explaining the derivation from Rabbi Yosi's as referring to a case where the produce had already been brought into Jerusalem, and the innovation is that it entered while still being tevel (untithed produce), and he holds that gifts that have not been separated are considered as if they have been separated. However, the Gemara raises a difficulty with this resolution (because it seems R' Yosi doesn't actually hold this position). The Gemara then presents two answers from Rabba and Ravina to resolve this difficulty. One who makes a bald spot on his head as a sign of mourning for the dead, who rounds the corners of his head or destroys the hair on his beard, or who makes a cut in his flesh for the dead receives lashes. The Gemara discusses the details of these commandments and the minimum measurements for which one would be liable.

This week's learning is sponsored by Sara Averick & Jose Rosenfeld in loving memory of Sara's beloved Aunt Rose, Rachel bat Chaim Nisan haLevi v'Nechama. "She was a Yiddish scholar who adored all her nieces and nephews. She was a beacon of light, laughter and joy." Rava bar Ada said in the name of Rabbi Yitzchak that a non-kohen is only liable for eating bikkurim once they have been brought into the azara, since until that point, they are still considered chulin. , not sacred. Rav Sheshet ruled that placing the bikkurim in front of the altar is critical, but reading the mikra bikkurim is not. The Gemara brings a braita of Rabbi Yishmael trying to prove that Rav Sheshet holds by his opinion. However, this suggestion is rejected. In the braita, Rabbi Yishmael derives the source for not eating maaser sheni after the destruction of the Temple. First, he tries to prove it from bechor, a firstborn animal, But after he rejects this suggestion, he proves it from a heikesh, a juxtaposition, from a verse in the Torah. The Gemara raises some questions against some of the content in the braita. Why couldn't they derive the law about maaser sheni from bechor and bikkurim together? Secondly, why was it so clear that the meat of a bechor could not be eaten after the Temple was destroyed, if, for example, the animal had already been offered as a sacrifice before the destruction? The first and second Mishna in the chapter both mention lashes for eating maaser sheni. To explain why the repetition, Rabbi Yosi bar Chanina establishes the second Mishna in a case of an impure person eating it in Jerusalem or the produce itself was impure and the person ate it in Jerusalem, whereas the first Mishna related to one receiving lashes for eating it outside Jerusalem (in a pure state). What is the source for receiving lashes for impurity of either the maaser sheni or the person eating it? From where is it derived that maaser sheni can be redeemed in Jerusalem if it is impure? From where is it derived that if a person bringing maaser sheni to Jerusalem is one step outside the walls of Jerusalem, one can still redeem it? What if the person is carrying it on their back and their body is in Jerusalem but the produce is not yet in Jerusalem?
