So, who am I and what are my qualifications? In this episode I'd like to tell you my story of how I came to love the caregiving industry and see the potential in it.I began my corporate career in business law and litigation, which eventually led to finance, then working at a local credit union. My time as a traditional foster parent showed me the weaknesses in the system, so I became a professional (also called “treatment”) foster parent. I fell in love with providing care and making an impact on the families I worked with, and I began to see the potential in the industry.In 2015, I wanted to start my own agency, but I wasn't sure how to get there. After a year of cold calling agencies to try to get some advice, I was able to find my now mentors with the help of my home loan officer. There are more than a few ways to show up and make an impact, so in this episode I'll give you an overview so you can find the way that speaks to you and the business you want to create. If you're already serving in a way that you don't love, then you're not showing up to do your best work and it's totally okay to pivot to a community service that lights you up.Traditional licensed assisted living: Think residential assisted living for the aged with generally less than 15 residents. That's not the same as an assisted living facility, which often has hundreds of residents. This is the model that most people get stuck on, but that's not the only way to serve your community.Licensed Group Homes: Habilitation type homes for DD or mental health individuals.Community Hab: Everything outside of a licensed residential or licensed group home. This can be meal services, employment services, home modification, there are really tons of different options. There's always an underlying notion that care providers shouldn't make good money from the care they provide. In this episode I plan to debunk that idea. We need to make money in this business in order to operate. You have to pay the bills, facility, food, all of the things that it takes to operate a business. You have to be able to pay your care team and pay them well. YOU deserve to make good money in this business. Your intentions are good, you've done the work, you're on this journey to make an impact, so why shouldn't you be compensated? You are providing a needed service, just like anyone else. But, beware of the slippery slope. In this episode we're talking about the most common mistakes that providers make when they aren't making the money they desire. Oftentimes when people get started, they see a big need in their community and fill it expecting to immediately find tons of perfect clients. Truth is, even if there is a big need, clients do not fall from the sky. These are the most common mistakes I see.Market research didn't happen properly and the provider is flying blind to what the community actually needs. Many aspiring providers will try to copy what an existing provider is doing, but they don't have enough inside knowledge on what that company actually does to be able to see the same success.They don't realize that marketing is the lifeblood of their agency. In order to get placements for your services, your business needs to stand out and the community needs to know about it.They're not the best provider. The quality of care and quality of life for their clientele isn't up to par. So often, I hear from people wanting to get started but they're struggling to find information, they don't know where to start, and they're not sure what they really want to do. The next two pillars are Excellent Customer Service and Mindset and Community. In general, I find that customer service in the care industry is seriously lacking. This can work to your advantage because, even if someone has a negative experience, whatever you can add to your customer service experience is going to help you stand out.That said, because we're always taking care of everyone else, we tend to neglect ourselves. Taking care of yourself is more than mantras and bubble baths. You need to surround yourself with a like-minded community that understands your job. If you're wanting to break in to the business but the models you've seen don't really add up, or the state website isn't being very helpful, that's a very common place to be. You might get some help from your local network, but it won't be enough to make sense. Many people get started with the unlicensed route because it's a bit easier to start up, but it's a lot more hustle for not enough income. When I broke into this business, there were a lot of things that I found out that nobody had told me. This is a very tight-lipped industry anyway, and there's a lot that wouldn't have made sense if they had told me.Starting out, I had no idea what Community Hab even was, much less that there was so much variety within it. Just know that you can break into the care industry without starting a licensed assisted living or group home.I didn't realize how important the mission of the agency was and how it helps you to steer the ship. It shows up in how you run your business, your marketing, and how you show up for your clients, and anyone you hire needs to buy into your vision or they won't be a good fit.Not all clientele that are presented are going to be the right fit for your agency. This episode is primarily for providers who provide housing for individuals and provide care 24/7, but there are some good tidbits for everyone here. In the cares industry, it's not a matter of if there will be some sort of emergency, but when. When you're dealing with human lives and caring for real people, there will be leaks, fires, broken windows, etc.It doesn't do anyone any good to wallow and try to place blame when there's a crisis to be dealt with. We knew that we would have to pay back those stimulus payments from 2020-2021, and here we are with high unemployment, high interest rates, and high inflation.
