This Mother's Day we celebrate the women who raise us, nurture and help us find our inner strength and outer voice. Typically, they are our mothers or stepmothers—but they also can be foster moms, grandparents, neighbors, dance teachers—any woman who holds a mirror up to our potential. They often enter our lives without warning and change us forever—though sometimes it takes years for us to realize it.  These are my thoughts on Victoria Rowell's compelling 2007 memoir, “The Women Who Raised Me.” Ms. Rowell spent her youth in the foster care system. But with the help of many dedicated and caring women, she became an accomplished dancer and successful actor. Her memoir is a tribute to the women who raised her, and she describes them in loving and vivid detail.   “I was never meant to be raised by one mother, but by many.”  -Victoria Rowell  Ms. Rowell is a two-time Emmy Award nominee and has received 11 NAACP Image Awards. She is perhaps best known for her 20+ years on “The Young and the Restless” and eight seasons on “Diagnosis: Murder.” Rowell continues to act (look for “Summer Camp” in theaters May 31, 2024) and write, direct, and produce. Additionally, she has been recognized for her work with foster children and advocacy for education, the arts, and mental health awareness, support, and treatment.  As always, thank you for listening to Advanced TV Herstory. Wouldn't it be great to see foster homes waiting for children, rather than children waiting for homes? Unfortunately, Utah is nowhere near having enough homes, especially those to support kids with special needs. This month is National Foster Care Month, and we talk to two leaders in our state's foster care community about our shortage of foster parents in Utah. Check out our Upcoming Events! Episode Summary: This episode of the podcast discusses the decline in the number of foster parents in Utah and the nationwide trend. The conversation highlights the importance of foster care and how the shortage of foster families impacts the system's ability to care for children in need. The Problem: The episode opens with Liz, the show host, mentioning a nationwide trend of a decline in families coming forward to foster children. Tonya, the Director at Utah's Child and Family Services, confirms this trend and adds that the number of foster parents in Utah has been going down since 2022. They discuss the fact that while they expected a decrease at the beginning of the pandemic, the opposite happened. The number of families coming forward to foster actually increased during the first year or two of the pandemic. The Importance of Foster Care: The conversation then shifts to the importance of foster care. Tonya emphasizes that the goal of the Utah Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) is always to keep children safe, ideally at home with their families. When that's not possible, the focus is on finding a safe and kin-based placement for the child. Kin-based placement refers to placing the child with relatives whenever possible. However, when there are no relatives available, having a sufficient pool of foster families becomes crucial. How You Can Help: Considering becoming a foster parent: Fill out the form below for more information on becoming a foster parent. Volunteering: Check out our volunteer page for upcoming events. Donating to Utah Foster Care: Financial contributions can help support foster families and child welfare organizations. Call to Action: Consider getting involved in foster care, whether that means becoming a foster parent or donating time or money to support the children in care. If you weren't aware, May is National Foster Care Month and this topic is near and dear to my heart because I myself am a former foster parent and adopted my daughter through the foster care system. Today I want to empower providers and celebrate foster care in and of itself and focus on how to really better yourself to be able to provide better care. The youth that we serve are extremely important because whether they're in foster care or not, they're going to be the leaders in our world one day. They were dealt a hand that they had no control over and foster care providers are brave and important, and not recognized nearly enough. How can foster families get the support they need when there's so little from the state?Build your own support systemPrioritize self-care so you're not burning yourself at both endsGet involved in a community of like-minded people who understand what you're going throughIf you still value the work that you do and see a mission in being a foster parent, we have to do whatever we can to preserve you and bring your attention to self-care so you can continue to do the work in the most effective and fulfilling way you can.Ready to Create and Launch your Licensed Assisted Living, Group Home or Community Hab Business so you can make 7 Figure IMPACT while Building Wealth Through Care?Head over to grab my FREE Mini Course: 7 Figure Impact showing you exactly how start and launch your 7 Figure Licensed Assisted Living, Group Home or Community Hab Business >>> www.startupprovider.comIf you are serious and want to start working with me, go to www.workwitharianajay.com to apply for the Start-Up Provider Program!Follow me on:Instagram @_arianajayTikTok @arianajay_Facebook @thearianajayYoutube ArianajayJoin us over in my FREE Facebook Community: 7 Figure Impact | Assisted Living, Group Home, and Community Hab Providers.Music credit: Mavericks by Harrison AmerA Podcast Launch Bestie production

Hearing about the pressing need for compassionate arms and welcoming homes to accommodate vulnerable children in foster care is heart-wrenching. There are over 11,500 children in foster care in Georgia alone, with a staggering 391,000 nationwide. As believers, how do we help care for the vulnerable? May marks National Foster Care Month, and to honor this, Jonathan is joined by author and Bible teacher Jessica Mathisen. Propelled by the desire to expand her own family, Jessica answered the call to become a foster mom. In this meaningful discussion, Jonathan and Jessica delve into what it truly takes to foster children - and no, you don't have to be a "super" Christian to make a difference! We invite you to tune into this enlightening episode. Jessica shares her journey and provides valuable advice for prospective foster parents. She encourages the church community to support foster families in their congregations. Did you know that over 400,000 kids are in foster care in the United States? That means there are hundreds of thousands of personal stories. Hundreds of thousands of children are without a place to call home permanently. This need is ginormous, and I subscribe to the idea that we all play a part. I don't subscribe to the idea that all families should adopt. However, I believe we should all care for vulnerable children. It's not an option to not care. I'm excited to share a two-week series on The Happy Hour about foster care. May is National Foster Care Month, and we want to highlight some of the different people who play a role in foster care. Foster Care advocate, a survivor of the foster care system, a foster/adoptive momma, and the story of a birth mom who placed her son for adoption.Wherever you are in your world, I want you to know and believe that these stories matter to you. The reason they matter to you is because they deeply matter to God. Listen to these four women share their stories and allow God to change you because of them.
