Last October, we heard about a new mental health research study, which aimed to identify the overlaps between parenting and mental health struggles. Building Connections was launched by Clarecare in conjunction with the Department of Psychology in Mary Immaculate College, Tusla and The HSE. It examined the experience of parenting while living with a mental health challenge. The report and findings of the research were launched recently. To discuss this further, Alan Morrissey was joined by Head of the Department of Psychology at MIC and one of the researchers involved in the project, Professor Niamh Stack and Senior Social Work Practitioner in the HSE, Martina Kilcommins. “This isn't like a conference you go to and just listen to people give presentations, this is interactive. You're actually solving real world problems and working together to come up with those solutions. {You} have everyone at the table, really why you want to join is so you can be at the table and direct the future of our industry.” In this conversation, Devon Tilly and co-host Nathan Wood chat with Todd Sutton from Zachary Corporation! This podcast is a part of a series of episodes that will be coming out from now until Spring 2025 covering the AEC Summit in Austin, Texas April 23rd – 25th 2025. We encourage our listeners and partners to share and engage with us during this conference coverage! With over 35 years of construction industry service with Zachry Corporation, Todd has supported various business units and industry markets in finding user-inspired, process-based solutions through the implementation of technologies or construction methods to assist in project execution. He is an enthusiastic advocate for workforce initiatives, participating in Zachry's Career Exploration Program internship for high school students. At Zachry Corporation, he works on R&D to improve processes, as well as on the technologies that enable these improvements. He is currently involved in several industry data exchange standards, primarily focused on openBIM IFC efforts and FHWA, AASHTO, and State DOT-led digital delivery efforts. Co-host Nathan Wood understands how rewarding the design and construction process can be when technology and culture embrace a new era of innovation. Nathan first earned his reputation as an industry thought leader in 2011, sharing his award-winning implementation of virtual design and construction (VDC) while working on integrated project delivery (IPD) healthcare projects. Nathan strives to share the best practices and lessons learned he's gathered from over 100 project teams spanning the US, Europe, and the Middle East. These experiences have taught him that when it comes to adopting technology in construction, it's not one size fits all. For that reason, Nathan founded SpectrumAEC with a clear goal — solving the human barriers to new process and technology adoption. As SpectrumAEC's founder and chief enabling officer, Nathan helps organizations and project teams successfully adopt change through executive strategy sessions and end user workshops. Nathan continues to support industry progression through conference presentations, academic papers, and as President of the Construction Progress Coalition. This episode of the Change Africa podcast features Selasie Gomado, founder and creative director of Artematis, a Ghanaian art collective and agency driving the continent's artistic renaissance.Selasei begins by tracing his early love for drawing, stifled by familial expectations to pursue engineering, a path he followed until a post-university epiphany sparked Artematis. What started as an online art shop in 2018, born from a random thought in a car ride, has grown into a dynamic collective showcasing five artists globally, from London to Hong Kong.Selasie recounts the rocky early days—six months of no sales—until a friend's advice to tap into Ghanaians' love for experiences led to the first Full Moon Exhibition. With 300 attendees and a single sale, it was a modest validation that shifted Artematis toward events. The momentum of 2019 screeched to a halt with COVID-19, nearly ending the venture. But a personal brush with the virus in 2021 became a turning point. Bedridden and reflective, Selasie recommitted to managing artists full-time, quitting his engineering job after signing with Phillips Auction House for a landmark 2022 London show. The discussion pivots to the artists of Artematis—Hawa Awanle Ayiboro, Abdur Rahman Muhammad, Kwaku Yaro, James Mishio, and Courage Hunke—each pushing boundaries with unique materials and themes. From Hawa's vivid depictions of women's struggles to Courage's fusion of paper and plastic waste, Selasi highlights their growth from emerging to established talents. He reflects on the challenge of balancing structure with creative chaos, a dance he navigates with patience and an open mind.Selasie situates Artematis within Ghana's thriving art scene, crediting pioneers like KNUST's arts department and galleries such as 1957 for creating “third spaces” that democratize art. Yet, he notes a persistent hurdle: local art collecting lags, with over 90% of sales to foreigners. The episode closes with a hopeful vision for African art's future—rooted in quality, documentation, and experimentation—underscoring Selasi's belief that its foundations are still being built.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Change Africa Podcast01:01 Selasi Gomadu and Artomatis: A Journey into Art03:01 The Evolution of Artomatis and Its Impact06:01 Challenges and Triumphs in the Art Scene09:04 Navigating the Art Market: Strategies and Insights12:00 The Role of Community in Artist Development15:03 Defining Great Art and the Artist's Journey17:59 Fostering Creativity and Managing Artists21:07 Success Stories and Growth in the Art Collective23:47 Behind the Scenes of Art Exhibitions26:56 Experimental Approaches in Contemporary Art30:00 The Future of Artomatis and the Ghanaian Art Scene35:50 Building Connections in the Art World39:38 Challenges in the Art Industry44:58 The Role of Galleries in Community Engagement47:03 The Evolving Culture of Art Collection in Ghana50:49 Supporting Artists' Mental Health53:39 Spotlight on Emerging Artists01:06:30 The Future of Art in AfricaFurther Reading and ResourcesTo explore Selasi's world further:Visit Artematis' website (assumed URL) for artist profiles and upcoming shows.Read Rebecca Ann Proctor's 2021 article that spotlighted Artematis, Explore Ghana's art scene through Gallery 1957 and Nubuke Foundation, key players mentioned by Selasi.
