The Music Director at Radio Western says: I'm just so grateful to have you guys on our station, to have Outlook here on our programming, and congratulations on reaching your 300th episode. Note at this point: we are a radio show first, as our theme states, and then become this podcast, if anyone was unaware of how and where we started/start each week - 94.9 on the dial locally, streaming audibly live at radiowestern.ca, at 11 AM EST weekly. Bird's eye view, an Outlook. It was a bird's eye view of our show with this one, as we were on Twitch, just for this particular episode and only for the live version. We love the irony to that as we discuss things like our pet peeve that many podcasts these days feel they need to have a visual component to them, even if podcasting is an audio art form so naturally we thought we'd “try” going live on Twitch for this. Irony or hypocrisy - you decide. This podcast episode still retains all the best bits, even if you've missed the live version. We are joined by those, we joked, who are forced to listen to Outlook every Monday, live, the staff from Radio Western in London, Ontario where we originally broadcast live from every Monday morning at eleven Eastern. To celebrate show 300 and our seven year mark we spoke with Radio Western Music Director (essentially Music Librarian) Ian, Marketing Director (Whirlwind) Elijah, and (new) News and Spoken Word Director Ryan and BF Barry (our sometimes third co-host) from Ireland. It turned out as a fun-filled and highly humorous discussion with friends and friends of the show about the last seven years, the history of Outlook On Radio Western, and what we want to highlight without claiming to speak for “all blind people” here. We talked wrongful interpretations of what blindness is in media while noting the correcting of that with things like book “There Plant Eyes: A Personal and Cultural History of Blindness” by Leona Godin and sharing a bit about sibling dynamics from everyone around the table. This sibling radio show/podcast celebrates that relationship with 300/7. And that's all contained here and not just live, even if you can't watch us, you could listen to Radio Western and/or on our show streaming there on Monday's. Elijah from Radio Western says to brother/co-host Brian: We all try to make this place as welcoming as possible. This is a place where everybody can feel as though they have a platform especially when you and Kerry are using this platform for good and to get such a positive message out and understanding…an a knowledgeable message, an informing message. Check out Ian's show Thursday mornings from 8:30 AM to 11,A Person Disguised As People and Elijah and Ryan's show Outside The Frame Tuesdays at 6 PM.

The committee considers a host of factors in the selection process, including representation of writers and stories from a range of cultural, ethnic, racial, and other affinities, as well as the gender balance of the writers whose work is presented in a given theatrical season.

What is the role of art in today's political reality—comfort, challenge, escape… all of the above? In this wide-ranging, candid conversation, conductor Alyssa Wang joins Kate to wrestle with the big questions artists, leaders, and audiences are asking right now: Does art really “bring people together”—and what does that actually mean? How do we reconcile fundraising language with tangible community impact? Can programming be both an invitation to joy and a catalyst for reflection? Where does an artist's responsibility begin and end—in the hall, on the podium, or in civic life? How can leaders speak authentically without polarizing their communities? Alyssa shares openly about purpose, impact, and leadership in an era of stress, censorship, and escalating tension—and why empathy, community building, and honest dialogue may be our most essential artistic tools. About Today's Guest: Alyssa Wang is a passionate and versatile conductor, violinist, and composer. She is the Co-founder/Artistic Director/Principal Conductor of the Boston Festival Orchestra, the Music Director of the Cincinnati Ballet, and Music Director of the Cape Symphony (MA). Her honors include the 2024 New Music USA Creator Fund, 2023 Solti Foundation Career Assistance Award, and 2022 St. Botolph Emerging Artist Award. As a performer and composer, Alyssa has soloed with ensembles across the U.S., premiered her own violin concerto Swept Away, and recorded on Grammy-nominated projects (including Carlos Simon's Requiem for the Enslaved). In this episode, we discuss: The long game of artistic impact: what ripples are real vs. rhetoric “Bringing people together”: beyond bodies in seats to shared experience Escapism vs. engagement: why Pops can be active community-building Programming with integrity: reflecting a community without stopping there Leadership under pressure: speaking to humanity, not partisanship The artist as citizen: where civic action may satisfy the need for tangible impact Stress, doomscrolling, and giving audiences a place to listen and feel Balancing institutional voice and personal convictions as the public face of an org Connect with Alyssa Instagram: @AlyssaWang1895 More from Kate Book: Beyond Potential — practical frameworks to realign your work and life Sign up for Kate's Newsletter: The Weekend List — weekly sparks for high achievers Connect on Instagram: @kkayaian Enjoyed this conversation? "Revisiting Stories: The Prodigal Son and Belonging" Sunday, September 14, 2025 We talk about the importance of sacred stories. They come in many forms. The gentle ones whose wisdom goes down sweet and easy and the ones that require a lot more work. In my experience the Prodigal Son, a story told in the Gospel of Luke, is one that a lot of people want to toss aside. It pricks our notions of fairness, our own sibling rivalries. On Sunday we will roll up our sleeves and lean into it and see what wisdom it has to offer. It is a story particularly relevant to the question of belonging. This Sunday we will also ritual confer on the Rev. Alyson Jack the title of Minister Emerita with a reception to follow!   Rev. Vanessa Rush Southern, Senior Minister, preaching; Rev. In 1989, Keith LaMar (aka Bomani Shakur) was sent to prison at age 19 for murder. He had been living in Cleveland, Ohio, where he sold drugs as a means of survival in the Crack-infested streets he knew as home. On a day that would forever change his life, Keith was robbed at gunpoint and exchanged gunfire with his robbers. He was shot twice in his legs and hit one of the other men in the chest. That young man, one a childhood friend, died. Keith pled guilty and was sent to prison for 18 years-to-life. Four years later, Keith was attempting to put together the broken pieces of his life at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, hoping for another chance at life. It was an Easter Sunday, and the weather had just turned warmer; Keith and about 400 other men were outside exercising in the rec-yard when commotion broke out inside and it became clear that some type of protest was underway. Keith made a quick decision to slip inside for a few minutes to secure his personal belongings (since his cell assignment was in the area being taken over). Once back out in the yard, he and the others waited to see what would transpire, watching as the bodies of several men were dumped onto the yard. As Easter came to an end, the Ohio State Highway Patrol rounded up those on the yard and secured them into another part of the facility. Prison records prove that Keith was among them. Though no one could have predicted what exactly was happening, or how it would all result, an 11-day siege ensued. In the end, nine inmates and one guard ultimately lost their lives. When the dust began to settle, the State of Ohio needed someone on whom to pin several of the early inmate deaths. This is where Keith's troubles began… A few months later, several prisoners were enticed with the promise of early paroles and/or dropped charges if only they would come up with a reasonable story to help the State sweep up the “mess” at their out-of-control prison. They determined Keith would be the fall guy, and they pointed their fingers at him. Thus, to make it all come together convincingly, the prosecution withheld actual confessions from his defense, as well as eyewitness statements that contradicted their fabricated version of events. In spite of zero DNA or forensic evidence, they moved forward with their accusations against Keith. In fact, they made sure his trial would be racially biased in their favor by calling for the removal of the few potential black jurors, and by holding his trial in an all-white county in southern Ohio. In spite of having no motive to kill anyone, no actual proof connecting him, nor any affiliation with any of the groups organizing the uprising, the jury didn't take long to find Keith LaMar guilty of the murder of five of the inmates. He was sentenced to death. Albert Marquès is a pianist, composer, and political activist from a working class, industrial town outside of Barcelona, where he worked in factories through school. A member of a Catalan anti-capitalist organization as a teenager, he narrowly escaped being detained for his activism. Influenced by the local punk scene, as well as jazz recordings of musicians like Chick Corea, Brad Mehldau, Michel Camilo and Herbie Hancock, he was self-taught until he attended Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu. After graduation, he made two pivotal trips which changed his life, spending a month in the West Bank in Palestine and a month in Cuba. During his four years in Barcelona, he played with the best musicians of the scene, such as Marc Miralta, thanks to his unique, non-academic sound. Upon graduating, he moved to Paris, where he worked in a McDonald's until he learned French. In Paris, he played with musicians such as Remi Vignolo and Pierre Perchaud, and became the pianist in African American drummer Leon Parker's quartet. At 25, Albert moved to New York City, without knowing even one person, to play jazz. After a year and a half working as a waiter and going to jam sessions every night, he met his mentor Arturo O'Farrill, who gave him his own baby grand piano. In addition to his musical influence and encouragement, O'Farrill hired him to teach with his organization, the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance, a non-profit that gives free Latin jazz music lessons in the most disadvantaged New York City public schools. Albert also plays and collaborates with his sons, Adam and Zack O'Farrill. In 2014, he married the sculptor Mia Pearlman, with whom he has two children, Aviva and Sol. It is in New York that he finally combined his biggest influences: contemporary jazz, flamenco, Afro Cuban music and social justice by creating Freedom First. He has recorded four albums as a band leader, and regularly collaborates with rhythm master Ari Hoenig, Spanish flamenco singer and saxophonist Antonio Lizana, and other American and European musicians. Marques is the Music Director at the Institute for Collaborative Education in NY, a progressive, public middle and high school in downtown Manhattan.

Manny Schvartzman (Hamilton Music Director and Conductor) is back for round two as he continues discussing his experience putting up Rent in Cuba with Andy Señor, Jr in 2014. The whiplash of going from the shiny, multimillion dollar On Your Feet to a space with daily power outages and a lack of running water was an intense, rewarding, and life changing experience. It taught Manny that anything was possible, and theatre could truly be done absolutely anywhere. If he could do that, he could do anything. After Rent in Cuba and successfully adapting Gloria Estefan's music to a Broadway stage, Manny made his way to Hamilton, which he was a fan of "from day zero." Manny knew about Hamilton before any of us did, and being able to be a part of the show - and to work with his hero Alex Lacamoire - was beyond a dream come true. In this episode, Manny breaks down his super detailed job of Hamilton's music director (and conductor and keyboard player) and it takes us no time at all to become an Alex Lacamoire Appreciation Podcast, a very familiar topic on The Hamilcast. I hope you're ready for a deep dive on Team Music because Manny Schvartzman is here! Manny is the music director, conductor, and keyboard one player on Hamilton's Angelica Tour. In his first episode, Manny walks us through the early stages of his career, which started at around eight years old, when he started teaching himself to play piano and read music with the goal of being a classical pianist. By the time he was a freshman in high school, the word was out in Miami about kid from Buenos Aires who could play piano like nobody's business. Manny was like Schroeder - all about the classical music - and he couldn't be bothered with musicals like Fiddler on the Roof. But once he got a taste of the collaboration and storytelling involved in the theatre world, he never looked back.  Being his high school's music director at 14 years old was a formative experience and then you combine it with Manny's inherent curiosity, kindness, and relentless work ethic? He's unstoppable.  Manny was summoned to New York to work on On Your Feet (with the legendary Gloria Estefan) and was simultaneously making history in 2014 when he was part of the team that brought Cuba its first Broadway musical in 50 years: RENT.
