On this episode, I'm joined by Samuel Levi Jones ahead of his latest solo exhibition at Vielmetter, Los Angeles, abstraction of truth. The exhibition presents a profound and timely critique of the structures that shape our understanding of authority and history. Jones' method of deconstructing books and now, flags serves as a powerful metaphor for the dismantling of the colonial and imperial narratives that continue to influence our legal and social systems. By physically tearing apart these symbols of power and reassembling them into abstract compositions, Jones not only challenges the authority of these texts but also invites viewers to question the origins and implications of the knowledge they represent.Samuel Levi Jones was born and raised in Marion, Indiana, and he lives and works in Indianapolis, Indiana. Trained as a photographer and multidisciplinary artist, he earned a B.A. in Communication Studies from Taylor University and a B.F.A from Herron School of Art and Design in 2009. Goldie specializes in glass flameworking combined with performance, video, installation, and scent embodying themes of feminism, the environment, and decolonization as it relates to the body. Goldie was born in Manila, The Philippines in 1987. Her parents; Napoleon Poblador, a lawyer and painter and Gizela Poblador, a home-maker who had earlier studied dentistry. Goldie is the eldest of four children; she has three younger brothers. She was, she says, an imaginative child who enjoyed creating worlds and performing. Between colleges Goldie was introduced to the Scuola Abate Zanetti in Murano, Italy. What happens when an artist's "unit" of work is rooted in "trouble"? Join us as we explore this fascinating concept through the insights of Amy Sillman, uncovered in an enlightening Art21 episode. We dive into the gripping narrative of how tension and contradiction can be both a hurdle and a muse, shaping the creative grammar that artists use to articulate their vision. Our journey continues as we traverse the dynamic landscape of artistic mediums, from the smell of fresh paint to the thrill of finding the perfect object in a thrift store. We emphasize the importance of experimentation, pushing boundaries, and feeling the materials in your hands. Like relationships tested through trials and imperfections, the artist's connection to their mediums evolves, leading to unexpected innovations and a renewed passion for creation. Can embracing imperfections in your work actually propel you forward? We wrap up by reflecting on the significance of documentation and the evolution of one's artistic journey. Drawing inspiration from unconventional tools and the stories of transforming unsold pieces, we highlight the beauty of unpredictable art-making. By documenting progress and embracing both control and spontaneity, artists can continuously improve and grow. OT and Lactation can have a very complementary relationship however, sadly it's frequently a complicated relationship instead. In this episode Katie Oshita and Nat Udwin discuss how IBCLCs and OTs can not only support each other but support families for better results. OT is all about skills to "do your job" which can mean work skills for an adult, but for a baby their job is eat, sleep, poop, exist comfortably. In their OT practice, Nat sees a lot of fussy babies, with sleep, feeding breathing and regulation difficulties. There can be delayed milestones, impaired reflex expression/integration, and asymmetry. Nat sees many clients virtually, teaching parents how to use play and movement to help their child thrive. Working together with an IBCLC and OT isn't always necessary but when there are issues needing more support, the results are astounding.Podcast Guest: Nat (Natalie Udwin) is an infant development, airway and reflexive feeding specialist AKA pediatric OT. On IG, most people know them as "Nat The Baby OT". Nat's home base is in Atlanta, GA but they also work virtually with families all over the world. Nat has a B.A. in Studio Art from Whitman College, an M.S. in OT from Milligan College and has been an OT for 12 years. They have specialized in infant development for 7 years now. Nat has a 4 year old son named Ari and enjoys anything in or on water, hiking, traveling, abstract painting and drawing and is definitely happiest outdoors. Sometime around 2015, Nat's eyes were opened to the world of reflex integration, which completely transformed their practice. Finally, Nat was seeing skills were sticking and carrying over to other aspects of daily life that just weren't happening before for their patients. It was the "foundational" approach to therapy that Nat had been trying to figure out for years. After a couple of years of learning to integrate or inhibit retained reflexes, Nat began to ask WHY. Why were all of these kids retaining these reflexes from infancy into childhood? What was happening developmentally to change their trajectory? Nat needed to know. So . . . Nat dove headfirst into infant development courses. They quickly learned about the importance of human connection and emotional regulation in early infancy, as well as the developmental importance of strong breathing and oral motor skills to support a lifetime of healthy growth. It was now all starting to make sense. The next step was to start working with infants, and to put all of this new knowledge to the test. Nat, alongside some incredible mentors and colleagues, has spent the past 7 years mastering their understanding of infant development to not only become an infant development specialist, but to create what is now the foundation of a holistic airway focused practice for children of all ages. Podcast host: Katie Oshita, RN, BSN, IBCLC has over 24 years of experience working in Maternal-Infant Medicine. While Katie sees clients locally in western WA, Katie is also a telehealth lactation consultant believing that clients anywhere in the world deserve the best care possible for their needs. Being an expert on TOTs, Katie helps families everywhere navigate breastfeeding struggles, especially when related to tongue tie or low supply. Katie is also passionate about finding the root cause of symptoms, using Functional Medicine practices to help client not just survive, but truly thrive. Margo is joined by artist and designer for the gift & home decor industry, Jennifer Brinley. Jennifer has been in the industry for over 20 years with a degree in Studio Art from UC Santa Barbara and she believes well designed products can bring moments of joy. Her creative path took her to graduate school for architecture before promptly dropping out after learning advanced math was involved to pass "structures." She then bounced around with a variety of jobs to save money to go to Europe for 3 months with a childhood friend. After Europe, came the quandary of what to do next and decided she would go back to school to become an art teacher. A want ad looking for a T-shirt designer led to quickly creating a fake portfolio and she began designing T-shirts for Crazy Shirts as well as getting a business license to sell her own T-shirts. She met her licensing agent by chance making color copies at Kinkos and today her designs have been on everything from tableware, gift mugs, kitchen textiles, rugs, fabrics, placemats, trays, coasters, gift bags, flags, art poles and planters. Synthesis, a process that may sound complex, is actually quite common in our daily lives. From the production of everyday items like Advil, organic milk, citric acid, to the creation of vitamins A and D, and multivitamins, synthesis is a key player. Why does this realization often provoke a negative reaction? Perhaps it's because there's a desire for clean, safe, and consistent natural products, especially when they originate from plants.Surprisingly, synthesis enhances our ability to deliver such products. This week, we're joined by Shane Johnson to delve into the following topics: How minors are manufactured, synthetic vs. biosyntheticUpcoming Minors to keep an eye onNovel APIs & AnalogsAbout Dr. Shane JohnsonDr. Shane Johnson's career has focused principally on offering strategic business advisory services to companies in the biotechnology and healthcare sectors. His work has included guiding regulatory strategy, product portfolio assessment and valuations, and product development and launch strategies for companies including Biogen Idec, Amgen, and Genentech. This week, we're joined by Shane Johnson to delve into the following topics: How minors are manufactured, synthetic vs. biosynthetic Upcoming Minors to keep an eye on Novel APIs & AnalogsAbout Dr. Shane JohnsonDr. Shane Johnson's career has focused principally on offering strategic business advisory services to companies in the biotechnology and healthcare sectors. Have you ever watched an artist wrestle with their inner demons as they try to capture something ethereal on the canvas? It's this very struggle between ego and insecurity that we unravel in our latest episode, where we uncover how artists balance confidence with vulnerability. We discuss the critical role of ego—not as a symbol of arrogance but as a beacon of assurance—and how this impacts an artist's interaction with the art world. Join us and a panel of artists as we share candid experiences of wrestling with self-doubt, all while boldly owning the title of 'artist' with pride and authenticity. This episode also peels back the layers of complex emotions tied to visibility and recognition in the art world. Imagine the double-edged sword of yearning for acclaim, while simultaneously standing naked to public critique—it's a vulnerability we all know too well, but one that can lead to growth. We navigate the art of celebrating personal achievements, leaning on the strength of a supportive community, and managing the green-eyed monster of jealousy with grace. Our guests open up about the transformative power of encouragement and how fostering connectivity elevates not just individual artists, but the entire creative ecosystem. Finally, we take you on a journey to the seclusion and inspiration of artist residencies like Pooch Cove, where the environment shapes spirit and practice. Through personal stories, we reflect on how spaces like these can catalyze profound shifts in artistic perspectives, illustrated by our own encounters with the vastness of nature and a community that feels like an instant family. We wrap up with heartfelt gratitude to the residencies that have rekindled our creative flames and tease the promise of upcoming museum visits and interviews. If you're an artist or just fascinated by the creative process, this episode is a palette of emotions and revelations not to be missed.Artists in the episode:@tynathanclark @Moksananda@francis.beaty@audreycha.art@jaclyn_gordyan@giannatesone@allisonhudsonart@bonny_thomassen_art (present but not in the episode)Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?"~ 1 Corinthians 6:19"Why isn't my body different?""Why did God give me this particular body?" "What if I feel frustrated by, or even hate, my own body?"All of us have feelings & questions about the bodies that God has given us, and sometimes those feelings can become deep experiences of sadness, disgust, or shame; especially in a culture that idolizes only some appearances & body types. In this episode of This Whole Life, Kenna invites Megan Lawrence, LAMFT in that tender and crucial conversation to help shed light on the dark places of struggles with body image. Drawing on Megan's personal and clinical experience with eating disorders, they reflect on the meaning and purpose of the human body as God's gift for the good of his children. And informed by St. John Paul II's Theology of the Body, they propose a stance of non-judgment as a path toward acceptance of your body as the beautiful and definitive gift that it is.Megan is a Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist who holds a Master's Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln. Megan approaches therapy through an attachment-based, trauma-informed lens, and is trained in EMDR. She has specific experience within eating disorder recovery.
