In this episode Mark speaks to author Johnny B. Truant about THE ARTISAN AUTHOR. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes, a personal update, and a word about this episode's sponsor. This episode's sponsor: This episode is sponsored by an affiliate link to Manuscript Report. Use code MARK5 at checkout and save $5.00 off your own personalized report. In the interview, Mark and Johnny talk about: Johnny's return to this podcast (with neither of them being able to remember how many episodes he'd been on previously). Technically, this is his fourth time. Two previous episodes were interviews, and the other was Johnny's brief guest reflection spot in Episode 300 Why Johnny's new book THE ARTISAN AUTHOR is a much-anticipated and needed book in the industry A definition of what it means to be an artisan author, which is kind of the opposite of being a "rapid release, Kindle-only eBook" author The importance of taking away that stress-cycle of having to pump out so many books as a single prescription "how to do it" answer Remembering an important thing that, just like there is no single "the way" neither is being an artisan author The paradigm shift and mindset change that is required as a fundamental starting point How readers outside of the eBook/Kindle-only marketplace aren't as focused on lower price points and are okay with higher prices The reality of the publishing landscape in terms of the books being sold and money being earned The misinterpretation of the book Johnny and Sean Platt released years ago called WRITE, PUBLISH, REPEAT How there are two kinds of writers. The type who approach the business as trying to solve a puzzle and the type who approach it as a way of telling a story that they really want to share How a call of "go slow and make art" is not nearly as sexy as a "solution" The experience of driving off to meet a couple of long-term fans to sign and sell directly to them Connections and humanity being a key element of the artisan author experience The value of authentic connection, regardless of whether or not it's in person or online That powerful experience Johnny had doing one of his first major live book signing events as an author at Author Nation in Vegas and how that led to doing a lot more in person events The ability to adapt to a customer based on their reactions in person Look at it as connections, and then if sales happen . . . great! Being really generous with your time and attention Some of the logistics of doing an in person book signing A couple of unexpected and amusing anecdotes from selling books in person The Kickstarter that Johnny is doing for this book, which runs July 15 through Aug 14 (johnnybtruant.com/artisan) The additional "continuum of education" that Johnny is including in this Kickstarter (Artisan University) The importance of authors entering into things with conscious decisions rather than just blindly following the generic advice they've found And more . . . Montana's unofficial tagline is “the last best place” — which should tell you something about the way the state thinks about itself. It's a political frankenstein, incredibly beautiful, increasingly filled with tourists, and a twelve-hour drive from one corner of the state to the other. Oh, and just over a million people total live there. Including Chris La Tray, who's just finishing his tenure as Montana Poet Laureate, and one of my favorite thinkers on what makes Montana so easy to fall in love with — but not always a very easy place to live. In this episode, we talk about our favorite, most contradictory, and most hostile parts of Montana culture, from exorbitant housing prices to what it's like to live in a place that falls in love with its own area code. If your vision of Montana culture comes from Yellowstone, this is a great corrective… that will also make you want a huckleberry milkshake. The Trump/Epstein file fiasco just hit a new level of absurd. First, the Trump team said the files existed. Then they didn't. Now? Trump claims the whole thing was actually written by Democrats. Yes, really. As the narrative whiplash continues, even some of his most loyal supporters are starting to squint. Is this the moment the MAGA base begins to crack, or will they fall in line yet again? Join us for a breakdown of the latest chaos, contradictions, and cover-ups in this ongoing scandal. This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. Dr. Andy Beam has trained models, mentored scientists, and used data to quantify the value of treatments. In this episode of NEJM AI Grand Rounds, Raj Manrai turns the table on his co-host, reflecting on how Andy's childhood misdiagnosis, and the failure of human recall, revealed the diagnostic promise of machine learning. As a Harvard professor, he mentored hybrid thinkers and built tools to evaluate safety, not just performance. Now CTO of Lila Sciences, he's building an experimental AI system to generate its own hypotheses and test them in the real world. This conversation is a front-row seat to the next evolution of science. Transcript.

This week, we dive headfirst into Superman from the iconic charm of Christopher Reeve in Superman (1978), into the chaos of Superman II (1980), all the way to the brand-new 2025 reboot. Guests Adam Beam and Rachel Clow are along to explore what's changed, what's endured, and whether truth, justice, and hope still have a place in today's superhero landscape. Along the way, we're sipping on two stellar brews: Solar Myth from Real Ale Brewing, a cosmic IPA that packs a bright punch, and Life in the Clouds from Collective Arts Brewing, a hazy, dreamlike companion to our cinematic flight. It's nostalgia vs. modern spectacle, capes vs. cynicism, and a couple of great beers to keep things grounded. Up, up, and pour away.

First, the Trump administration promised transparency. Then Pam Bondi swore the Epstein files were right there, sitting on her desk. But now? Poof. The files don't exist. And just when Congress had a chance to vote on releasing them, nearly every Republican on the House Rules Committee said nah. What are they so desperate to hide? Why the sudden memory loss? And how is it that one of Trump's core campaign promises has just… vanished? Join us live as we break down the hypocrisy, the political cowardice, and what this scandal says about power, protection, and the people who never seem to face accountability. Congressman Ro Khanna joins us live after introducing a bill to force the release of the Epstein files, and every single Republican voted against it. Yes, the same Republicans who claim to fight for “truth” and “transparency.” The same MAGA movement that once demanded these files be made public. So what happened? What are they hiding? What are they so afraid of? And how does a promise to "release the files" turn into "there are no files"...and then "there are files, but they were written by the democrats"?!? We'll dig into it all with Rep. Khanna, the politics, the hypocrisy, and why accountability seems to vanish when it gets too close to home. This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. It's been a year since the assassination attempt on President Trump's life, it was the most-defining moment in the campaign as a defiant, heroic President Trump stood up after being grazed by a bullet and said "Fight, Fight, Fight." Salena Zito was about 6 feet away from the president on that day and brings us insight to what happened and the aftermath. President Trump called Salena 7 times that day, something had changed, he was saved by God and the profundity was just starting to crystalize. Salena shares intimate details about Butler in her best-selling book Butler: The Untold Story of the Near Assassination of Donald Trump and the Fight for America's Heartland. We still don't know what radicalized Thomas Crooks and his family is a mystery in their neighborhood. We remember Corey Comperatore, his family and all those that suffered in Butler. Susan Crabtree has been investigating the Secret Service since they completely failed to secure the perimeter. Former Secret Service director Kim Cheatle is largely to blame as reports came out weeks in advance about an attempt on President Trump's life. Another part of the puzzle is Iran, Asif Merchant was casing the Secret Service for months trying to find a way to infiltrate their defenses. Iran has also released mock videos of a drone attack on President Trump. Senator Rand Paul and Senator Chuck Grassley, have produced daming reports on the extent of the failure and Susan wants to know if the new director of the Secret Service Sean Curran is explicitly addressing these former failures of the agency. Tonight, Don Lemon is joined by Mark Epstein (yes, that Epstein, Jeffrey Epstein's brother) for an unfiltered conversation about the latest twists in a case that just won't go away. From alleged ties to Donald Trump, to the bizarre about-face on releasing Epstein's files (first promised, now suddenly never existed), we ask: what does Mark really make of it all? What's true, what's spin, and who's trying to keep the truth buried? If you've been wondering why powerful names keep dodging accountability, you won't want to miss this. Join us in a captivating discussion with Bigfoot expert Thom Powell. In this episode, Thom shares his incredible journey from a skeptical science teacher to a respected figure in Bigfoot research. He recaps his deep involvement with the BFRO and highlights notable incidents, including the discovery of the Skookum Cast in Gifford Pinchot National Forest and the mysterious encounters in the Clackamas River Basin. Thom delves into the concept of Bigfoot habituation and recounts his communications with a psychic that allegedly led to compelling evidence, such as a shadowy figure captured on a trail camera and an emu bone found in peculiar circumstances. Not to mention the strange, almost humorous interactions that hint at Bigfoot's intelligence and playfulness. Thom also discusses his latest book, 'Planet Strange,' which explores the intersections between Sasquatch sightings and extraterrestrial phenomena. MAGA is melting down over the new Superman movie because, apparently, telling the story of an immigrant who fights for truth and justice is now “woke.” Never mind the fact that Superman has always been about immigration, inclusion, and standing up for the little guy. But when the story doesn't center them, MAGA calls foul. We're breaking down the absurd outrage, the history they conveniently ignore, and what this says about the right's favorite buzzword. Spoiler alert: Superman's values haven't changed, they're just not yours, MAGA. This episode is sponsored by Beam. Christopher Beam, in a recent New York Times investigation, reveals how a group of brilliant minds from Google, NASA, and the rationalist movement in Berkeley became part of a murderous cult-like group known as the "Zizians." He story recounts six deaths, from a blood-soaked Vallejo property to a fatal Vermont shootout. Unlike Charles Manson's dropouts, these tech elites weaponized artificial intelligence fears and rational thinking into deadly extremism, which was enabled by California's tolerance for radical ideas.

The Texas floods are devastating, but where's the outrage? In past administrations, the media was quick to criticize the government's disaster response. So why the relative silence now, especially as Trump's massive cuts to FEMA and the National Weather Service come into focus? We'll break down the media's glaring double standard. Then, we dive into a bizarre and disturbing headline: Elon Musk's chatbot, Grok, is reportedly praising Hitler. How did this happen, and what does it say about the future of AI oversight? This week, we're exploring two very different takes on otherworldly connection—one artful, one absurd. First up: The Legend of Ochi, a moody, visually rich fantasy where language is limited but emotion runs deep. Then we shift gears—hard—to Mac and Me, the 1988 cult oddity that tried to be E.T. but ended up being a two-hour commercial for Coca-Cola and McDonald's. Adam Beam joins us to talk cinematic world-building, creature design, and unintentional comedy as we explore two breweries from Maine: Sacred Profane and Bunker Brewing Co.

Mark shares captivating stories from his youth in Illinois and his adult life in Tennessee. Mark recounts eerie eye-shine sightings of Sasquatch with glowing red eyes, mysterious tree structures twisted by unknown forces, and unsettling experiences with strange animal behaviors. From hearing unsettling owl calls that seemed too loud to be normal owls, to discovering deer carcasses with skin mysteriously stripped, Mark's encounters are both intriguing and unnerving. He also discusses his theories on what Bigfoot might be and his advice for those venturing into Sasquatch territory. This episode offers a deep dive into Mark's personal account of Bigfoot activity, providing listeners with a unique perspective on these mysterious creatures in the woods of Tennessee and Illinois.Sasquatch Summerfest this year, is July 11th through the 12th, 2025. Scott Ruskan left his accounting job in NYC to serve his country in the U.S. Coast guard, today he is a national hero. It was Petty Officer Ruskan's first mission as a rescue swimmer for the Coast Guard and the Guadalupe river had risen from 3 to 30 feet in the area near Camp Mystic, an all girls Christian camp. On the ground Ruskan was the only first responder and nearly 200 terrified, cold children needed his help. Ruskan, along with 65 brave men and women of the aircraft unit showed their bravery and heroism and are American heroes. Tricia McLaughlin joins me today to give us a comprehensive look at the Department of Homeland Security and the efforts they are taking to keep Americans safe. Two more attacks on federal agents happened in Texas as deranged lunatics are ambushed agents at an ICE facility and U.S. border patrol facility. ICE is currently in LA's MacArthur park, infamous for gang activity and Karen Bass wants them to leave immediately. Dangerous gang members, terrorist supporters and criminals will continue to be deported. Dangerous rhetoric from Democrats incahoots with the media have caused a 700% increase in assaults on ICE agents this year. The headlines like "Maryland man" and "Georgetown scholar" are forgetting little details like members of MS 13 or tren de aragua. The "Georgetown scholar" that was detained is the senior advisor to the Hamas terrorist group. The USDA's new National Farm Security Action Plan is securing and protecting American farmland and banning American farmland to be purchased by Chinese nationals or other foreign adversaries. Under Kristi Noem's leadership the DHS will continue to put America First and keep the homeland safe. It was a spectacular weekend for President Trump and his agenda. The big, beautiful bill has passed and been signed into law. As B-2 bombers flew over the White House, President Trump made it official on the 4th of July. It was Jd Vance that put the tying vote over in the Senate to pass the bill 51-50. Senator Eric Schmitt is here with us to discuss the big, beautiful bill and what it means for Americans. American families can expect to see an extra $10,000 in take-home pay each year, no tax on tips, no tax on overtime and no tax on Social Security. Senator Schmitt walks us through the OBBB, including finishing the border wall, permanent tax cuts and changes in Medicaid. The bill will help to reduce the deficit as the reconciliation package takes effect, the growth of the U.S. economy, new trade deals and revenue coming in from tariffs. Australian reporter Ross Coulthart stated during a recent podcast that he has learned from an unnamed insider that the so-called “Tic Tac” UFO witnessed by the U.S.S. Nimitz Navy pilots in 2004 was built by aerospace/defense contractor Lockheed-Martin. Also, astronomers have identified a new interstellar object entering our solar system that is much larger than anything else recorded previously. A Freedom of Information Act request has netted the actual 4-second video of an object captured by a U.S. military platform over the skies of Mosul, Iraq, in 2016. Happy 4th of July from the Sean Spicer Show. We hope you are celebrating a safe and fun Independence Day surrounded by your friends and family. As the big, beautiful bill hits President Trump's desk, just like he said it would, it marks another historic achievement early in his presidency. The big, beautiful bill is President Trump's America First agenda and its passing shows a united Republican party. As President Trump signed the bill today, I want to share the latest data from Seth Kesher. If you remember, Keshel perfectly predicted the 2024 election right here on the show. His forecast models with states that register voters by party are incredibly accurate, allowing Seth to look at comparable counties and trends to predict how other states will vote. Today, Seth is taking us to 2026 to unpack the midterm elections to see if Donald Trump could be one of two presidents since World War II to grow their majority mid-term. In the fifth chapter of "No Way, Jose!", host Jose Galison dives into Part Five: No Snappy Title, a pivotal episode unpacking Dr. Wendy Painting's meticulous research into the Oklahoma City Bombing. This installment begins by analyzing key calls made by Timothy McVeigh using the Daryl Bridges calling card in the weeks leading up to the OKC bombing, alongside a mysterious April 8, 1995, meeting in Idaho organized by Aryan Nations affiliates. Intriguingly, a car resembling McVeigh's yet-to-be-purchased 1977 Mercury getaway vehicle was spotted at this meeting, with authorities noting possible ties to the Arizona Patriots—a recurring thread in Dr. Painting's investigation. The episode also highlights two documented conversations between Louis Beam and Cheri Seymour the week before the bombing, one explicitly referencing Richard Snell's impending execution and Beam's later claims of foreknowledge of the OKC plot, revealed in a previously undisclosed recorded interview. These discussions, tied to the same network behind the Idaho meeting, hint at deeper connections that will unfold in the series' conclusion.Part Five backtracks to late summer and fall of 1994, tracing McVeigh and Terry Nichols' movements and their ongoing interactions with Roger Moore, who allegedly supplied bomb-making components at critical junctures. Jose explores McVeigh's travels across under-examined regions like Florida, Montana, and New Mexico, suggesting network-building within extremist circles, with Dr. Painting's research uncovering links between key individuals and groups in these locations. The episode also introduces McVeigh's emerging ‘cover story' about attending ‘survivalist training' in Utah, adding another layer of intrigue to his activities. With its focus on cryptic meetings, phone records, and shadowy connections, "NWJ 566" delivers a riveting continuation of the OKC bombing saga, inviting listeners to question the broader web of relationships and foreknowledge surrounding one of America's most devastating attacks. 50th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Newt Gingrich joins me today. Newt's new book Trump's Triumph is a New York Times best seller. Newt documents President Trump's greatest comeback in political history. Despite a 9 year effort to destroy him, President Trump won popular and electoral votes and became the first president to be nonconsecutively re-elected since President Grover Cleveland. Now that the big, beautiful bill has passed the Senate, President Trump is one step closer to fulfilling his agenda and the promise he made on the campaign trail. If President Trump can keep the House in 2026, the MAGA revolution will be fully institutionalized and set the base for Republicans to win the general election in 2028. Send us a text2025 continues to be the year of age statements seemingly making a return and Jim Beam is making another wave with the introduction of their Old Grand-Dad 7 Year Bottled in Bond Bourbon. Utilizing their high rye mashbill and the traditional bottled in bond confines of at least 4 years old and no more of less than 100 proof, this bourbon certainly will have something for the discerning palate, right? Only time will tell! I'm also comparing it to the Jim Beam 7 Year Bourbon and Old Grand-Dad 114 to see how it stacks up to some readily available products in the Beam lineup. It's a fun one and I hope you enjoy.Become a patron of the show at http://www.patreon.com/mybourbonpodcastLeave us a 5 star rating and review on your podcast app of choice!Send us an email with questions or comments to thisismybourbonshop@gmail.comSend us mail to PO Box 22609, Lexington, KY 40522Check out all of our merch and apparel: http://bourbonshop.threadless.com/Leave us a message for Barrel Rings at 859.428.8253Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/mybourbonpod/Twitter: https://twitter.com/mybourbonpodInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/mybourbonpod/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/thisismybourbonpodcastPayPal, if you feel so inclined: PayPal.me/pritter1492Link to our Barrell Rye Armagnac Finished Pick: https://shop.whiskeyinmyweddingring.com/products/barrell-private-release-rye-1a03Support the show
