En un contexto en el que Estados Unidos pone en la agenda mundial la extracción de minerales raros, el Congreso estadounidense le pide a México que reconsidere el caso de la minera Calica, cerrada en 2022 por violar las leyes ambientales.  En pleno Caribe mexicano, muy cerca de los destinos turísticos mundialmente conocidos de Playa del Carmen y Cozumel, se extienden las 140 hectáreas de la Calica, la empresa estadounidense que comenzó a explotar desde 1986 piedra caliza y a llevarla a Estados Unidos para pavimentar las calles. “Una de las compañías más grandes de asfalto de Estados Unidos”Cuando aumentaron sus extracciones, también aumentaron sus ambiciones, como lo recuerda a RFI el abogado y defensor del medioambiente Quetzal Tzab: “Es una compañía muy fuerte, muy grande, en la cual estaban involucrados, por supuesto, muchos funcionarios políticos de aquel entonces. Y bueno, esa compañía, que fue pequeña, destruyó, y hoy en día es una de las compañías más grandes de asfalto de Estados Unidos”. Durante el sexenio del expresidente mexicano Andrés Manuel López Obrador, a Calica se le retiraron los permisos, y clausuraron sus instalaciones porque comenzaron a extraer minerales en una zona restringida. Destruyó cenotes y acuíferos, y provocó un grave desequilibrio ecológico en la región, pero además de eso también sería la responsable de enfermedades respiratorias que aquejan a los lugareños.  “Una de las cosas más preocupantes y sobre la cual todavía no se ha hecho una investigación profunda es la problemática que hubo en los años de apogeo, que era el polvo que emitían al explotar las dinamitas. Es sabido que mucha gente de ahí sufre de asma. Mucha gente ha fallecido a causa de eso”, explica Quetzal Tzab. “Dicen basta”Del lado de Estados Unidos, la empresa demandó al Gobierno de México por 1.500 millones de dólares. Y del lado mexicano, la presidenta Claudia Sheinbaum busca conciliación con los empresarios y con los congresistas estadounidenses que apoyan a la empresa, pero también los locales se organizan, porque de acuerdo con el abogado, no permitirían que la minera opere nuevamente. “Los actores principales, que vienen siendo los habitantes de las comunidades, ya dicen basta, basta ya sacaron suficiente, dicen no, ya no, que no se abra, porque se dan cuenta por las casas también dañadas que hubo durante las explosiones, y las enfermedades”, subraya Tzab. El argumento de Estados Unidos para defender a la minera es que se trató de una expropiación. Pero México afirma que el expresidente AMLO sólo decidió cambiar el uso de suelo a “Área natural protegida“, y que no se trató en ningún momento de expropiación: “No hay expropiación. Ahora es un área natural protegida donde no se permite la explotación de estos materiales porque está afectando gravemente el ambiente”, dijo Sheinbaum.“Nunca hubo expropiación, las tierras son de ellos, el terreno es de ellos. El problema es que ellos se salieron completamente del área de explotación que tenían autorizada y se fueron a otras áreas, afectando cenotes y acuíferos”, precisó la presidenta.

En entrevista para MVS Noticias con Manuel López San Martín, Alicia Bárcena, secretaria de Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales, habló sobre que SEMARNAT expone caso Calica y desmiente expropiación.   Bárcena explicó que el problema con la empresa se remonta a 1986, cuando se firmó un convenio que permitió la extracción de calizas. “Es muy demoledor porque comenzó en 1986 donde se firmó un convenio con Calica”, aseguró, destacando que la autorización original abarcaba dos predios y contemplaba la extracción de 7 hectáreas anuales. ¿Qué actividades realizaba Calica? La secretaria advirtió sobre las graves implicaciones ambientales que ha tenido la actividad de Calica. “El proyecto nunca se debió dar”, enfatizó, añadiendo que la extracción y transporte de material de construcción hacia Estados Unidos ha deteriorado significativamente el ambiente. “Afecta la deforestación que ocasionaron, el daño al sistema hidrológico”, explicó, haciendo hincapié en la importancia de los cenotes y ríos subterráneos en Yucatán. ¿Cuáles han sido los daños ocasionados por Calica? Bárcena también resaltó la pérdida de selva, suelos y especies debido a estas actividades. “Es importante lo que se decidió de declarar como área protegida, 55 mil hectáreas”, comentó, resaltando que esta medida conecta con la reserva del mono araña y el jaguar, lo que podría dar lugar a un “corredor biológico impresionante en esta Península tan querida”. ¿Qué sigue? La restauración de esta zona, sin embargo, presenta desafíos. “Es difícil cuando se deforesta que vuelva a crecer la selva, pero es un recurso muy noble”, afirmó. Bárcena subrayó la necesidad de recuperar la vegetación y restaurar el agua contaminada, lo cual “va a costar, pero lo tenemos que lograr”. El presidente Andrés Manuel López Obrador emplazó a la empresa Calica a dar su respuesta al ofrecimiento presentado por su administración desde hace más de dos meses para adquirir las hectáreas que explota esa compañía como bancos de materias de construcción en quintana roo, tras un avalúo que alcanza los seis mil millones de pesos… cuestionó si desde estados unidos se va a argumentar violaciones al tratado de libre comercio cuando lo que se pretende es la protección de esa región en aras de salvaguardar el medio ambiente. I've said many times that there is no one more proud of their troop than Momma. There are probably a few dads and even some husbands and wives that might try to challenge me on this one, but I'm sticking to my guns because I know Momma feels something a little bit more when it comes to her kids. Today's salute comes from one of these incredibly proud mothers. Today we salute Gunnery Sergeant Roy Calica of The United States Marine Corps. Roy's mom, Sandy Calica wrote in to tell me that she is "beyond proud" of her Marine. This month marks 20 years that Gunny Calica has been in the Corps. He served in the 2003 wars in Afghanistan and Kuwait. He is a Purple Heart recipient, and he continues on to this day. Outside of his service Roy has made Momma proud by being a wonderful husband and a father to 3 beautiful boys. Sandy says Roy has excelled at everything that life has ever put in front of him. For his 20 years of service to the nation, today we salute Gunnery Sergeant Roy Calica of the United States Marine Corps.

Little do they know what the fates have in store for them. For, this very night, an evil greater than any they could possibly imagine has included them in its plans!

El municipio de Cozumel tiene una extensión total de 647.33 km2; lo que representa el 1.27 % del estado. Comprende la isla de Cozumel, islotes y cayos adyacentes; en la zona continental se localizan las instalaciones de CALICA y el Parque Ecológico de Xel–Ha. La isla tiene alrededor de 39 Km. de largo y una anchura media de 12.8 km. En todo el litoral de la isla se pueden encontrar playas de blanca arena y el mar color turquesa de gran belleza. Existen zonas hoteleras como Playa Norte y la Zona Sur y se cuenta con varios balnearios diseminados en el litoral. Laguna de Chankanab ubicada al sur del poblado es un cuerpo de agua comunicada por un túnel subterráneo con el mar en donde puede observarse, como en un acuario natural la fauna y flora marina; alrededor de la laguna existe un jardín botánico con la vegetación representativa de la región y en la costa que se encuentra aproximadamente a 100 metros de la laguna, existen arrecifes coralíferos y la estatua submarina de una virgen.
