This week, I talk to Seth Neblett (the son of the queen of funk, Mallia Franklin of Parliament-Funkadelic & Parlet & author of his new book Mothership Connected: The Women of Parliament-Funkadelic). We talk about how Seth was convinced by Bootsy Collins to tell his mother and the women of P-Funk's stories, how he initially assumed this tale was going to be told as a documentary, Mallia Franklin's appearance in the Don Letts docuemntary Tales Of Dr. Funkenstein, Seth (at age 6) being taken by his grandmother to go watch his mom perform with Parliament/Parlet for the first time, how he was able to narrow down this immense story from all the hudnreds of characters in this group's varied history, the strgggles with having your Mom be a recording and touring star, how Mallia Franklin brought elements to the band that changed music FOREVER, George Clinton and his initial band The Parliments, how Mallia's vocals are all over their recoridngs from Maggot Brain to Atomic Dog, the vast age diffrerences within the band, Mallia being called "the geiger counter" because her musical institncts were so incredible on who to bring into the p-funk world (like Bootsy Collins & Junie Morrison), how we often take a documentary's storytelling a the truth, being the "Dog & Cat Lady", why you can see so many full concert footage from Parliment's heyday, Neil Bogart of Casblanca Records and the courting of Mallia Fraklin, the genesis of the female-led spin off groups Parlet and Brides Of Funkenstein, why George Clinton put all various bands on diffferent record labels, how Geroge often didn't want his various bands to get bigger than him, how young the members of P-Funk were and how they often were not prepared for the psychological components of being part of it, Seth's thoughts on following up the book with a documentary vs a narritave series, how the women of P-Funk were not being invited to the induction ceremonies of the Grammys and Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, who should play his mom in the movie version of this story and more.So let's celebrate the queens of P-Funk forever on this week's episode of Revolutions Per Movie.SETH NEBLETT: Book: https://utpress.utexas.edu/9781477332672/Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/@sethneblett7268REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE:Host Chris Slusarenko (Eyelids, Guided By Voices, owner of Clinton Street Video rental store) is joined by actors, musicians, comedians, writers & directors who each week pick out their favorite music documentary, musical, music-themed fiction film or music videos to discuss. Just a one hour session this week as I slowly recover from being ill, but since it's my first one in three weeks it felt like I had to do some sort of mix. Kept this one slow and slinky, around the 100BPM mark throughout, and managed to cover a good amount of ground in 60 minutes - with some P-Funk, some Hip Hop, some R&B and some sexy disco vibes. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. In the conclusion of Sara J's epic two-part conversation with RoughGauge's Featured Artist for June 2025, Marc Shapiro, we pick up right where we left off—diving back into the gear talk and Marc's love for integrating the Jake blade into his setup.Marc shares what makes the Jake blade a standout addition to his arsenal, and how RoughGauge's legendary customer service ensured every detail was custom-fit—right down to accommodating his unique whammy bar setup and left-handed play style. From there, we explore how this custom Wilkinson build has seamlessly become a part of his sound, even making its way into the DNA of songs in his catalog. The conversation flows into what's next in Marc's musical worlds, Infinite Drift and Greasy Hands, as he offers a sneak peek at upcoming happenings—including a pig roast on Saturday, September 13th, and what promises to be a legendary Halloween shindig. We also dig into the heartbeat of the Baltimore music scene—from its deep jazz roots and iconic P-Funk residency to its thriving punk, metal, and Baltimore club communities. Marc paints a picture of a city rich in musical diversity, community spirit, and inclusive energy. Then we shift focus to Marc's passion for concert photography—how it sparked while writing for his college paper, the moment he realized he could get a photo pass, and how that led to a journey from point-and-shoot beginnings to capturing iconic artists. He reflects on the highs and lows of the craft, the beauty of small venues, and staying grounded in the love for local music. We wrap with a powerful reflection on creative balance—the importance of stillness and nothingness, and the ever-evolving dance of moving forward, even if slowly.Read Marc's Featured Artist Q&A: https://www.roughgaugellc.com/featured-artistsWhere you can find this week's guest:Greasy Hands:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/greasyhandsband/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GreasyHandsBandInfinite Drift:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/infinitedriftband/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61562600499050Marc Shapiro Media:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marcshapiromedia/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MarcShapiroMediaWould you or someone you know like to be a RoughGauge Featured Artist? Digital Underground's debut album, Sex Packets, is a landmark in hip-hop, blending humor, funk, and creativity into a genre-defying masterpiece. Released in 1990, the album is heavily influenced by the P-Funk sound of Parliament-Funkadelic, led by the charismatic Shock G (and his alter ego, Humpty Hump). The group's playful, irreverent style is on full display, along with innovative sampling and production that set it apart from the gangsta rap dominating the era.The album's concept revolves around fictional "sex packets"—a satirical sci-fi invention offering a hallucinogenic sexual experience. This loose narrative underpins the project, showcasing Digital Underground's knack for storytelling and world-building.Standout tracks include the massive hit “The Humpty Dance,” an infectious party anthem known for its funky bassline and hilarious lyrics, and “Doowutchyalike,” a carefree track encouraging listeners to embrace self-expression. Beyond the humor, tracks like “Packet Man” and “Freaks of the Industry” showcase clever wordplay, while the production layers samples from funk legends like George Clinton and Bootsy Collins to create a rich sonic tapestry.Sex Packets is both a celebration of funk's legacy and a bold leap forward for hip-hop, cementing Digital Underground as pioneers of their time.Listen to the album on Apple MusicListen to the album on SpotifyWhat did you think of this album? RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Albums and All That, Starting with the letter S as in Sierra, Part 9 From Something to Shout About (Lulu) to Sophisticated Boom Boom (Dead or Alive) Oh hey, by the way... there is now a Vinyl-O-Matic Patreon (https://patreon.com/youroldpalwill) Lulu with The Luvvers [00:30] "Chocolate Ice" Something to Shout About Decca LK 4719 1965 Hey hey hey! It's Lulu! This is her debut album. Despite what you might guess from her voice, she was 17 when she recorded this album. "Chocolate Ice" is the excellent title song to the very weird Gonks Go Beat (https://youtu.be/XhozBIMplQA?si=ULHH1FdCqSWJPyJ5) (Hartford-Davis, 1964), featuring Lulu and The Luvvers, The Nashville Teens, and the Graham Bond Organisation Todd Rundgren [02:40] "Hello It's Me" Something / Anything? Bearsville 2BX 2066 1972 Rundgren's 3rd solo album, spreading his musical wings a bit more than previous releases. Todd had originally written the song as a very mellow ballad with the Nazz in 1967, and was released as a b-side (https://youtu.be/FmLnDL_pNZQ?si=enMwjWzgNe_iplus) to their psyche rocker "Open My Eyes". Usually I'd go with the power pop progenitor "Couldn't I Just Tell You (https://youtu.be/fosMLTCFKQ8?si=Dgn25DMa61xCFRbJ)", but well, I'm feeling more mid-tempo at the moment. Jimmy Buffett [07:29] "Cheeseburgers in Paradise" Son of a Son of a Sailor ABC Records AA-1046 1976 Let me be perfectly clear: I am not now, nor have I ever been a Parrot Head. However, I do love cheeseburgers. This is the lead single from Buffett's eighth solo album. The single made it to #32 on the Hot 100. There's also a much-watered-down version of "Livingston Saturday Night", which can be heard to greater effect (https://youtu.be/5uizFyDRxso?si=ZfVrun8krTdxzagG) on the Rancho Deluxe (Perry, 1975) soundtrack, see also: Season 5, Episode 76 (https://vinylomatic.com/s05e76). Harry Nilsson [10:20] "It Is He Who Will Be King/Daybreak" Son of Dracula Rapple Records ABL1-0220 1974 The only new Nilsson song on this soundtrack. The less said about the actual film. Count Downe (Nilsson) is invited to take over Count Dracula's throne by Merlin (Ringo Starr). Lots of monsters and lots of rock stars, including Keith Moon and John Bonham, Peter Frampton, Bobby Keys, Klaus Voorman, and Leon Russell. Great packaging for the record though, includine a die-cut gatefold and an iron on transfer for the cover image with "Bite Me" written in goth script below. Julian Bahula's Jazz Africa [16:15] "Molebatsi" Son of the Soil Tsafrika Records TSA 001 1982 A great collective outing composed by this South African by way of Britain drummer/composer/bandleader. I picked this one up at Revolution Records in Amsterdam. If Google Translate isn't lying to me, this title translates to "Smoker" from Swati. And a smoker it is. The Temptations [21:46] "Shakey Ground" A Song for You Gordy G6-969S1 1975 One of several excellent P-Funk-backed tracks on this album. There's a pretty excellent Delbert McClinton version of this song as well (https://youtu.be/w7JCWoxtGLs?si=tLtnwaOT1j24Tgvy). The Exbats [25:47] "Like It Like I Do" Song Machine Goner Records GONE 192 2023 And boy do I like it! Another excellent outing from Bisbee AZ denizens Inez and Kenny and friends (https://youtu.be/l-Onx5zVfMs?si=OSeD0DJHPaOZ4NGW). They pretty much just keep getting awesomer and awesomer. Big Black [28:17] "L Dopa" Songs About Fucking Touch and Go T&G LP #24 1987 Scorching. And sadly, fare thee well, Steve. To anyone interested in recording, Steve and Electric Audio provided (and still provide) a wealth of information, as for instance: Everything you've ever wanted to know about tape alignment but were afraid to ask (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXA7imybaTsFWOFpaeP8wgXNDlZ4Xc8yq&si=ZMsU_ifbEBbmp6Kh). Ever since telling people to “Free Your Mind... and Your Ass Will Follow” in the late ‘60s, George Clinton's P-Funk sound has influenced countless artists, including the likes of Prince, Snoop Dogg and Janelle Monáe. George is the mastermind behind groups like Funkadelic and Parliament, and he's carved out a massive career in his own right. Last fall, Tom got to talk to George about his life in music, his influence on modern hip-hop, and how he hasn't been fairly compensated for that influence.
Is "PCU" hard to find because it crossed a line or because it's just not a very good movie? Listener Jeff from Nebraska commissioned the Shat Crew to uncover the truth for his 40th birthday. In a lot of ways, PCU is your typical '90s college movie. The university president is trying to shut down a student house. There's seventh-year senior showing the new guy the ropes. A kegger is the solution to life's problems, and the good guys win. But PCU is still very much its own film. There's no clear protagonist. No group of students is decidedly popular. There might not even be an actual plot. In this episode, Big D recalls his days as fraternity president. Ash explains college tours. Gene tells the Legend of Alpha Drive, and Jerry Seinfeld is wrong. The Shat Crew also tackles hazing, dirty talk in the dorms and whether George Clinton was the right choice as musical guest. Narada Michael Walden has won "Producer Of The Year" at the Grammy Awards. Before he produced monster records for Aretha Franklin, George Michael, Whitney Houston, and others, he was a prolific drummer from Michigan with a dream. In Part 1 of his Questlove Supreme interview, Narada recalls his upbringing and influences. He details his experiences, ranging from seeing Stevie Wonder as a child and years hanging out with P-Funk's Eddie Hazel. Narada also describes his time as a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and working with some of the most revered Jazz legends while as a disciple of Sri Chinmoy. This is a rare audience with one of Questlove's greatest inspirations.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
