Here's a bit of an oddity selected for us by one of our Patrons. Mostly known these days for having a surprise appearance of Barbra Streisand in Coffee Talk (which already has a sketch-long cameo performance from Madonna), there's also the fascinating and far less talked about case of the Red Hot Chili Peppers basically imploding live on stage, with John Frusciante going completely rogue from the band. And you've also got Roseanne, who's, uh...a lot less fun personality these days than here in 1992. Tom Arnold is there too, i suppose. The whole thing is just a strange gumbo. There's a lot of narratively focused sketches that work out both for the better and for the worse, the tricky balance of having two hosts, and just a strange vibe overall.

Content Warning: This episode of Encore discusses struggles with addiction and mental health issues. Believe it or not, Red Hot Chili Peppers were formed all the way back in 1982 as ‘Tony Flow and The Majestic Masters of Mayhem' - no idea why that name didn't ever catch on. But, with all due respect to original members - the late great guitarist Hilel Slovak, and drummer Jack Irons; the current lineup that we all know and love formed some six years later in the final months of 1988. Joining original members Tony Flow - aka Anthony Kiedis from here on out, and Flea - aka… well… Flea… were guitar genius John Frusciante, and the world's most successful Will Ferrell Look Alike - Chad Smith. Go on and picture the Red Hot Chili Peppers in your head; chances are it is this core four that you're thinking of… although there were at least another 8 transient members of RHCP throughout the years, with Frusciante especially coming-and-going throughout the band's history. With so much turmoil within a band - it's crazy to think that the Chili Peppers have never actually broken up, despite well documented addictions, tragedy and loss, lack of focus, changes in sound, and the aforementioned lineup changes over their 40+ years in Rock.  So, for this episode of encore we're going to zoom in on perhaps their most successful pivot of all, becoming what felt like a brand new band all over again some 15+ years into their career - this is the story of Red Hot Chili Peppers' 2000 Hit - Californication with newly unearthed audio from the band themselves.

Plenty of guitar-oriented bands rose to prominence in the 1990s thanks to wave after wave of new artists from various genres. The Seattle sound, pop punk, Britpop, etc. all offered a diverse array of sounds for six-string fans. It was like the 1980s era of guitar heroes, but with an emphasis on diversity of tone and style - the melodic mayhem of J. Mascis to the angular buzzsaw of Kim Thayil to the jazzy funk of John Frusciante - all finding the balance between creative tangents and serving the songs. That brings us to Big Hate, an Atlanta via New York band that utilize a fuzz pedal to its maximum potential. From the opener "Century," that features a lazy slide adding just the right amount of dissonance, to the riffing "Writer's Block," the band takes full advantage of their twin guitar attack. But while it shines musically, the band leaves a bit to be desired vocally, from not nailing a truly hooky chorus, to often sliding into early Our Lady Peace / Raine Maida territory.   Songs In This Episode Intro - Century 15:46 - West Virginia 20:34 - Disappointed 22:45 - Writer's Block 24:41 - Rock That Doesn't Roll / Dope Nostalgia podcast promos 34:35 - Lemonade 38:13 - Sufi Outro - Beauty Mark   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. Do Signature Guitars Still Matter?

First off, let's be thankful for this episode of Dipped In Tone. Rhett survived a close brush with a tornado while on the road in Arkansas, and returns to the pod to analyze all things signature guitars with Zach, who continues his dogged campaign to own a ridiculous number of Tube Screamers. (They didn't plan their near-matching shirts.)The conversation-starter is the new Jason Isbell “Red Eye,” a $21,999 collector's version of the 1959 Gibson Les Paul that famously belonged to Ed King of Lynyrd Skynyrd. When King passed away in 2018, the story goes that Isbell wanted the guitar, but couldn't afford it. Zach and Rhett explain how he accrued the capital to snag the axe, and the details behind the new artist edition. But who gets signature guitars, anyway? Some iconic players, like John Frusciante—so easily identified with his Strats—still don't have their own model. Is he being snubbed, or choosing to keep his name off a mass-produced guitar? Maybe some guitarists feel signatures are too corporate—which could also explain why Jack White has, so far, not lent his name to a model. (Though pedals are a different story.) And what about massively popular YouTube guitar stars and influencers—have they earned the right to be in the running for a signature 6-string?Later, Zach and Rhett dig into the economics of siggys—how much do their namesakes actually earn from the sale of their personal brand?—and debate Slash's bombshell move from Marshall to Magnatone.Subscribe, like, and leave us a commentSign up on our mailing list: http://eepurl.com/iaCee5Support us on Patreon for access to our discord server and other perks! https://www.patreon.com/dippedintoneMERCH: https://teespring.com/stores/dipped-in-toneFollow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/dippedintone Dipped in Tone is:Rhett Shull https://www.rhettshull.com/Zach Broyles / Mythos Pedals https://mythospedals.comPremier Guitar https://www.premierguitar.com/

This week, Sally's guest is Chicago artist and friend Clyde Moreau. The two go ape-crap discussing John Frusciante's Niandra Lades And Usually Just A T-Shirt, their mutual favorite album of all time. Clyde rightfully proposes that this album becomes a staple in every Black household, and Sally asks, "Why Paramore, and not this?". Both want to wish John a happy belated birthday (and ask John to wish them a belated happy birthday back), Sally mildly threatens all of Clyde's shout-outs, Burzum mentioned, Black twitter is ready to erupt upon publishing. Released in 1999, it is the only album from the duo of Bob Forrest and Josh Klinghoffer, who are joined on this album by a myriad of other musicians. One of these musicians is John Frusciante, who in 1999, had returned to the Red Hot Chili Peppers as their guitarist, and who Josh Klinghoffer in turn replaced in 2009. The album comprises 13 tracks on both its 1999 original release and 2001 re-release, but with some omissions and additions, as well as a track re-ordering. Will the boys come and go from this album, or will the bicycle thief instead steal their hearts? Come along and find out!

This episode isn't just an exploration of the captivating sounds of the fretless guitar, it's a journey into the heart of an artist's evolution, with personal anecdotes from Ned about the places and people that have shaped his music and life. Nashville's musical melting pot has been a part of my own narrative, and I open up about how the city's growth has intertwined with my family's history, providing a poignant backdrop for discussing the broadening horizons of the Music City.  Tuning in, you'll discover the interconnectedness of art forms, as I reveal how my creative outlets extend beyond guitar riffs into the realms of sculpting, painting, and animation. It's a conversation that dives into the life of a musician beyond the stage, showcasing the symbiotic relationship between different mediums of expression. We also share guidance for upcoming artists, balancing the excitement and caution needed to navigate the music industry, and I peel back the curtain on the intriguing process of crafting bespoke instruments for legends like John Frusciante.  Ned and I wrap up with an introspective look at the personal growth that comes from creating music and the joy of interacting with other musicians, peeling layers off the challenges of adopting new tuning methods, and the invention of the clamp slide for fretless guitars. Our chat moves between discussions about the durability and tonal clarity of glass fingerboards, to stories of European tours and the gratification found in working alongside guitar giants. So, strap in for an episode that strikes every chord, from the tactile to the emotional, examining the threads that weave through the life of an innovative musician. Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COM Backstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles: Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusic Instagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusic Twitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusic Website - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.com Artist(s) Web PageWeb - www.nedevett.comInstagram - @nedevettFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/Nedevett Call to action We ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages. Artist, musician, academic, and member of legacy American experimental band ONO Conor Tomaka joins the show once more, but with a specific purpose this time around. John Frusciante is already a God-level figure in the oeuvre of Safety Propaganda, but this time we are going back to the virtuoso guitarist of the Chili Peppers and experimental solo artist's infamous and masterful first two albums: Niandra Lades and Usually just a T-Shirt and Smile from the Streets you Hold. Both of these albums were recorded on a 4-track tape recorded in the early '90s when Frusciante was closing in on death due to intensely high and daily usages of heroin and crack cocaine. Video documents of the artist at his home show the once handsome and vivacious punk rock LA kid as a death shadow of his former self: cheeks sank all the way into his jaw, teeth falling out, ghastly white and pallid, anything resembling muscle tone vanished. He was disintegrated, and these albums are gorgeous-avant pop ballads disintegrating into the abyss. Niandra was partly recorded in Frusciante's bedroom at the mansion where he and the Chi-Peps recoded Blood Sugar Sex Magick at night time, and the second more ambient and abstract side was recorded after he'd left the band and plunged into addiction. Smile was recorded during similar sessions, he says, and includes vocals by the ghost of the late movie star and brother to the current greatest American actor Joaquin – River Phoenix. While both albums are masterpieces in differing ways, channeling Frusciante's enthusiasm for Beefheart, Zappa, Syd Barrett, and other weirdo troubadours, it is only Niandra that is still reissued and available for purchase. Frusciante has let Smile fall into obscurity – perhaps it is just too painful for him to listen to. Hail Frusciante. PATREON LINK OST (All songs by Frusciante) "The Big Takeover" "Smile is a Rifle" "Your Pussy is Glued to a Building on Fire" "Blood on my Neck from Success" "Height Down" (featuring River Phoenix) "The Ni**er Song" "The Poppy Man" LINKS: Follow Conor on Instagram Buy John Frusciante's Niandra Infamous John Frusciante Heroin doc John Frusciante live at All Tomorrows Parties, 2005

With an already storied history and established repertoire, Red Hot Chili Peppers are approaching their 8th album with an optimistic lens after several years of lineup changes and addiction problems among the group. John Frusciante takes the reign's as lead songwriter on this album, bringing flavors of light psychedelia, doo-wop, and Beatles/Beach Boys inspiration for the first time in the bands career. For Alex, this album represents a return to an album that served as a transition into other bands/genres, while Austin experiences it for the first time with an already sharpened musical pallet. Today we're sharing one of the most intimate conversations Rick Rubin has ever had on Broken Record. It's with the famed guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, John Frusciante. Rick Rubin last spoke to John back in April when the Chili Peppers were getting ready to release their album, Unlimited Love, their first record with Frusciante in 16 years. Unlimited Love debuted at number one in the U.S. and 15 other countries. Today, just a little more than six months later, the Chili Peppers released a second Rick Rubin-produced album, Return Of The Dream Canteen. On today's episode we'll hear John Frusciante talk about the band's early music, including the making of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. They talk about how his contributions on slower, more melodic songs like “Under The Bridge” and “Breaking The Girl” helped expand the Chili Peppers funk punk sound. John also talks candidly about the dark, drug-addicted years that followed the intense success of Blood Sugar. And he explains how he was able to finally get sober and rejoin the Chili Peppers to record their classic, commercial comeback album, Californication. If there's one thing I've learned in all my years dealing with musicians, there are artists and then there are artistes...here's how I tell them apart...Artists make art, but they also have other interests, pursuits and abilities...Bono is an example of an artist...he's the front man of U2 but is also involved in politics, activism, tech, and a load of other things...and everything he does is done with an artistic flair and the soul of a performer... Artistes also make art...but it's all they do...in fact, it's all they can do...they live to create art and are often not very good at anything else...in fact—to put a fine point on it—they may be hopeless at life in general... That's not a judgment or a criticism...it's just how their brains are wired...they are on this earth with an almost supernatural ability to do nothing but create beauty through art... But this power comes with pitfalls......they might have trouble with day to day tasks like handling money, shopping for groceries, keeping a schedule, or being able to deal with everyday social situations... They may suffer from depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder...they may be on the autism spectrum...and they may be prone to addictions: alcohol, drugs, sex...and if they managed to become well-known for their art, the insane pressure, crazy schedules, hedonistic lifestyle, and living in a bubble of fame can exacerbate things until—well, until things get very, very bad... I've met a few such artistes in my life—and in my experience, there is no better example than John Frusciante, who, of course, is best known for his work in the Red Hot Chili Peppers... His life, both in and out of the band—and he's joined three times and quit twice—has been very long and strange...this is part two of that journey.... Learn more about your ad choices. And if I'm sitting with my taxonomy flowchart, this is where I write the name “John Frusciante,” the occasional guitarist of the Red Hot Chili Peppers... And I use the word “occasional” deliberately because he's been in and out of the band a number of times over the last 30 years...as I write this, he's “in”—but who knows for how long... And I'm classifying him as periplaneta americana because despite everything he's been through, he's still alive...I mean, he's live a hard life...drugs, various health problems both of the physical and mental variety—even dabbling in the occult...yet through it all, he's been able to help the Chili Peppers create the best music of their career... This is the long, strange trip of John Frusciante... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
