In this episode of History Rage, we interview Ian Pegg, a military historian, shedding light on the often overlooked role of army chaplains during World War II. The discussion delves into their multifaceted responsibilities, ranging from spiritual guidance to acts of immense bravery on the front lines. The episode uncovers the challenges, personal sacrifices, and areas of courage chaplains faced during the war, emphasizing their integral but understated role in military history. Background on Chaplains in WWII:Chaplains played a pivotal role in WWII, initially tasked with spiritual well-being but adapting to various roles due to limited battlefield training.Their responsibilities included organizing religious services, pastoral care, entertainment, and even educational activities in POW camps.Chaplains Boosting Morale:Specific instances highlight the impact of chaplains on morale, such as Reverend James Quinn at Dunkirk and Reverend Wiles in North Africa, running a NAAFI truck for troops.Counsellors and Advisors:Chaplains served as counsellors and advisors, offering guidance to officers and privates alike, addressing moral and spiritual dilemmas soldiers faced.Personal Sacrifices and Recognition:The interview explores the personal sacrifices chaplains made, leaving their comfortable lives for the challenges of war.Recognition and awards for chaplains included one Victoria Cross awarded to Canadian Army Chaplain John Weir Foote for his heroic actions during Operation Jubilee Dieppe raid.Contributions of Chaplains in WWII:Ian emphasizes the need to recognize chaplains' contributions in all conflicts, not just WWII, and highlights the Royal Army Chaplains Museum as a valuable resource.Preserving Their Legacy:The interview concludes with a discussion on preserving the legacy of chaplains, urging continued recognition of their role in various conflicts.Closing Thoughts:The host expresses gratitude for Ian's enlightening insights and encourages listeners to anticipate Ian's upcoming book, "Death and Heroes: Army Chaplains in World War II."Connect with Ian Pegg:Twitter: @cluelesspegBuy the Book: "Death and Heroes: Army Chaplains in World War II."Support History Rage:Follow on Twitter: @historyrageIndividual accounts: @PaulBavill and @KyleGHistorySupport on Patreon: patreon.com/historyrageDon't forget to leave reviews on Apple Podcasts, Podchaser, or Amazon.Stay Angry, Stay Informed - History Rage Hosted on Acast. The NAAFI Break podcast highlights the transition from the military into second career success. The measure of success is subjective and different for everyone, although it is common to define it in many cases as achieving fulfilment by finding a new purpose. Within the Veterans Community there are many examples of ‘giving back' and when someone leaves the Military and is successful a strong desire to ‘send the elevator down for the next person' . Mark ‘Benny' Hill is one of those people, driven to help, to continue to serve others and he has succeeded in negotiating his own transition, to be able to be in a position to continue serving with a purpose.Another insightful and honest conversation with Mark that I am grateful to have had.Are you looking for help with your transition ? Newly married Mary Sage (Shirley Eaton) is distraught when her husband Charlie (Bob Monkhouse) receives his call-up papers during their wedding breakfast. He travels to Heathercrest National Service Depot, meeting fellow recruit Horace Strong (Kenneth Connor), a chronic hypochondriac who is devastated at having been passed as fit. The new recruits are assigned to Sergeant Grimshaw (William Hartnell). Grimshaw will soon be retiring from the army and takes on a £50 bet with Sergeant O'Brien (Terry Scott) that his last bunch of squaddies will be his first champion platoon. With beady-eyed inspection from Captain Potts (Eric Barker) and disgruntled support from Corporal Copping (Bill Owen), Grimshaw decides to use some psychology and treat his charges kindly rather than simply shouting at them. But basic training does not start well and he struggles to take his platoon through it. They include failure Herbert Brown (Norman Rossington), upper-class cad Miles Heywood (Terence Longdon), rock 'n' roller Andy Galloway (Gerald Campion), delicate flower Peter Golightly (Charles Hawtrey) and supercilious university graduate James Bailey (Kenneth Williams). His attempts seem doomed. Mary is determined to spend her wedding night with her husband and smuggles herself into the depot to get a job in the NAAFI, a situation Charlie is eventually able to legitimise. Strong spends most of his time complaining to the Medical Officer, Captain Clark (Hattie Jacques). It is only the adoration of doe-eyed NAAFI girl Norah (Dora Bryan), which he initially rejects, that makes him realise his potential and inspires him to become a real soldier. On the eve of the final tests, Grimshaw is in despair, but his squad overhears him bemoaning his lot to Copping. The squad decides to win the best platoon prize at all costs. On the day, they indeed beat the other platoons at all tasks and Grimshaw is awarded the cup for best platoon. On Grimshaw's last day, the men present him with a cigarette lighter as a retirement present and to say thank you.

They each had a cup of tea and a bowl of stew and sat at a table by the window while they ate their food and warmed themselves up. Nothing felt weird and nothing was noticeably amiss. Yet out of the window, they noticed two airmen walking on the airfield, presumably returning from a flight … but was it a flight from the unknown?' The NAAFI Break Podcast has covered many aspects of the transition from the military to a second career, always leaning on the 'truth' and lived experience of those who have served or connected to our Veteran Community. That is why when a guest opens up and expresses their emotions, it is a privelidge to bring their story to the wider consciousness. I have often asked guests if they joined to get away from the life they had or to seek a new adventure and it throws up many reasons for joining. This weeks guest is Angus Peacock, Coach, Leader and Royal Navy Veteran who has made the journey from 'The dark side' of Croydon life via the Royal Navy, China and now lives in San Diego. His career in the Royal Navy saw him commission, but it is his post military career that throws up the most interesting insights. The effect of military service can have long lasting impact, not solely through PTSD,injury or medical discharge, but in the perception of self and behaviours that can be both positive and sometimes self destructive. Recognising your strengths and weaknesses is crucial in moving forward effectively. Not every Veteran, was involved in 'Operations' or fired a weapon in conflict, many served during the queiter times in our military history, but still gave up part of their life to serve their country, always prepared to do what was necessary.  It has been uncovered that many left the military because the Operations finished and the thing they most wanted in thier military career was not going to be available. Those that we not in conflict are just as worthy of the title Veteran and deserve recognition. In over 120 episodes not often does the word 'shame' feature in the lived experience of our Veteran Community, but Angus Peacock explains why 'not doing enough' compared to those who served in conflict throws up some interesting points and his personal validation of his militar career and his part in the development of others was a long time coming after he left the Royal Navy.Honest, open and insightful, this conversation was everything I hoped the NAAFI Break would be when it started in 2021.Please like, comment and share to anyone who wants to understand or Veteran Community and the experiences of transition.#Veteran #Podcast #LivedExperience #Coaching #Leadership

One of Peter Sellers' favourite episodes of The Goon Show, the inspiration for The Jet-Propelled Guided NAAFI was torn from the pages of the news as Spike Milligan picked up on a story in the Telegraph about abuses of taxpayer money overseas. James Page joins Tyler to discuss the show and they talk about how a neat happenstance in the previously referred to newspaper article provided the perfect hook for Milligan and a gag which over time has lost its original relevance; the many memorable lines and sequences which still get quoted today (and who knew g-strings were around in 1956?); a new theme tune; plus negotiations at the time for a new series with the BBC. There's also time for some Ratties praise and that time an audience member walked onto the set of Wogan during a Harry & Spike interview.

Nick León is part of a newer generation of Miami producers who infuse modern-day club music with sounds from around the region, everything from Miami bass to reggaeton. In León's case, his most recent—and most exciting—music has focused on beats inspired by reggaeton and its sub-genre perreo, but with a musical palette that speaks to a love of electronic music from Aphex Twin to Burial to music on labels like NAAFI and TraTraTrax. (This is a predilection he shares with DJ Python, whom León just launched a new party with.) It's on the latter label he released the Rompediscoteka EP, one of the canniest genre fusions he's done yet, meant to hark back to the feeling he had when he first discovered reggaeton. (It came with eye-opening remixes from Maral, Kelman Duran and Henzo, producers whose personal-but-global approach mirrors León's own.) He also head a head-turning EP on Future Times, which threw Miami-style electro into the mix, with an ambient touch. Like his productions, the young Miami DJ's sets can range from slow and low to high and tight, and his RA Podcast captures León in peak-time mode. It's a Latin-spin on everything from techno to tech house to cool-kid club music, with selections from Nico, Simisea, Siete Catorce, Ricardo Villalobos and MM adding up to a vibrant and rhythmically restless hour that soars across genres and scenes. Thousands of British troops are primed and ready to fight Saddam's forces in the gulf. The training is done and now it's time to wait. It's a bit boring though, especially as smartphones haven't been invented yet. So to lift morale they read their blueys from home, eat their NAAFI chocolate and tune in to their very own radio station. Listen as the decision makers, military commanders and ordinary soldiers, sailors and airmen all reflect on their roles in the 1991 Gulf War, 30 years on.
