Daniel McIntyre aka Lullahush released his second album Ithaca on April 11 via Future Classic. Having collaborated with the likes of AE Mak in the past and attended the Red Bull Music Academy, Lullahush released his debut album A City Made of Water and Small Love in 2022, an ode to his home town Dublin. He's developed a complicated relationship with it, which he explores on Ithaca, having moved to Athens in recent years. From the press release: Ithaca weaves a narrative interrogating ideas of pride, home and belonging. Longing for home in exile has been widespread amongst the Irish diaspora over the years. This includes 19th-century famine refugees, 20th-century exiles fleeing the Catholic Church's oppression, those who left during the economic depression of the 1980s, and more recently, those affected by Ireland's housing crisis and Dublin's embrace of Big Tech. Daniel explores all of this as well as his own odyssey with him now living in Europe as a result of his homeland becoming “economically uninhabitable.” “I miss it, but I have a difficult relationship with it” says McIntyre. “‘Ithaca' is where Odyssus is trying to get back to in the Odyssey - my search for a sense of home since leaving has made me think about what Ithaca means. Maybe it's not a place, maybe it's a series of circumstances, maybe it's something internal, maybe it's something you carry around with you.” Lullahush supports Róis at the Workman's Club on May 1. Dori talks with writer and music storyteller Piotr Orlov, exploring themes of identity, the immigrant experience, and the transformative power of community. Piotr, whose grandmother was a classical musicologist and father, a prominent, American basketball-loving sportswriter, came here from Leningrad to New York at 7-3/4 years old, fully bought into the American Dream story. He shares how his cultural background shapes his perspective and how that lens has changed over time. His first, indelible (and timely!) New York City memory proves how the truth we see isn't always THE truth. The discussion delves into the significance of community in music, the challenges of building new institutions when the ones that formed us are no longer sustainable...or relevant, and the legacy we leave through our stories.Piotr's writing has appeared in New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, and the Village Voice. He was director of special projects at AFROPUNK, senior editor at NPR Music, and editorial director at MTV. He helped produce the Red Bull Music Academy in New York. He is an adjunct teacher of writing and history at NYU's Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music and at Columbia University. Peter is also the founder of Dada Strain, a platform grounded in rhythm, improvisation, and community. This week, our regular programming resumes with a survey of the state of post-pandemic nightlife, from ubiquitous Britney Spears remixes to artists griping that DJing is “embarrassing” now. Joined by Shawn Reynaldo, creator of the popular First Floor newsletter and author of a recent book of essays on the evolving nature of electronic music culture and the industry that surrounds it, Emilie and Andrea return to their music-writing roots to explore why going out feels weirdly different than it did in the before times — and the strange and subtle ways that our offline experience of electronic music is being shaped by the ways we discover and consume it on the internet. We discuss how platforms like Instagram and Boiler Room are reshaping what club culture looks and sounds like, the rise of the DJ-as-influencer, and why the decline of the so-called “musical gatekeeper” might have actually been a bad thing for music. Finally, we try to parse the legacy of Red Bull Music Academy, the long-running electronic music incubator and publication that cemented the energy drink company as a weirdly generous patron of the arts, and also happens to be where Emilie and Shawn first met. For the Record is a conversation series where we speak with all manner of music heads — DJs, music journos, indie label captains, record shop owners, listening bar kingpins, et al — about their stories + the music that makes them. As a bassist in the band Moot back in early-'80s NYC, Bruce Tantum's formative years were spent soaking up club culture in such hallowed halls as Mudd Club, Pyramid and Danceteria. Later in the decade, his time spent in those downtown dance dens, and those that that followed, inspired him to get step into the DJ booth — and over the ensuing years, he's played at pretty much any club willing to have him, as well as at more dingy basement parties than he can remember. For over two decades, Bruce has served as a music journalist, toiling for Time Out NY (where he served as the longtime Clubs editor), Resident Advisor, Red Bull Music Academy, XLR8R, Mixmag and more. He currently holds it down as North American editor of DJ Mag, while still heeding the call of the decks for the occasional night of record-spinning fun. "The dance floor is a portal and a transmission tool in addition to being a technology of togetherness." The British author's new book, Dance Your Way Home, offers a sociocultural history of the dance floor. Emma Warren has been documenting grassroots music culture since co-founding Jockey Slut magazine in the mid '90s. From those early years to subsequent stints at THE FACE and Brixton's youth-run Live Magazine, her journey of personal growth has become intertwined with nightlife. In this episode, the UK author speaks with Aaron Gonsher, former editor-in-chief of the now-defunct Red Bull Music Academy, about her new book, Dance Your Way Home: A Journey Through The Dance Floor. Writing about how music thrives through in-person connections and physical spaces, she provides a social history of the dance floor while highlighting the power of communion. Their conversation is a fascinating and far-ranging one; they speak about writing from the heart and Warren's deep connections with nightlife communities. She also talks about how the dance floor acted as a palliative in times of personal strife. "As I was writing [the book] and working it out through the writing, I realised that the less my dad could move or had control over his body, the more I needed to dance and have control over mine," she says of her father's disability. "So, I feel this absolute connection to the strength which you bring on the dance floor: that core control, that tightening of your body, that loosening of your limbs when you're moving and just how important that was to me—and what a life saver, really." Warren is also the author of three other books, including Make Some Space: Tuning Into Total Refreshment Centre, Document Your Culture: A Manual and Steam Down: Or How Things Begin. Listen to the conversation to hear her thoughts on why we dance together and what dancing tells us about ourselves.

Fresh off his triumphant homecoming at the 1967 San Francisco International Film Festival, Melvin Van Peebles finds himself in a very different America than the one he left in 1959. There are protests against the Vietnam war, a growing counter culture culminating in the ‘Summer of Love', and The Civil Rights Movement evolving into cries of Black Power. Soaking up this chaos like a sponge, Melvin combines global politics, street conversations, and his favorite 1880's French Singer to create the worlds first hip-hop album, ‘Brer Soul'. From there, he goes to Hollywood for his first and only studio film, ‘Watermelon Man'. Facing oppressive studio oversight, Melvin uses every trick at his disposal to subvert Hollywood's racist pass from the inside out.Email us: behindtheslatepod@gmail.comInstagram: @behindtheslatepodTikTok: @behindtheslatepodYouTube: @behindtheslatepodcastJoin our weekly film club: https://www.instagram.com/arroyofilmclubProducer: Greg KleinschmidtSources:'Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song' by Melvin Van Peebles (1971)'2008 Interview with Red Bull Music Academy': https://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/lectures/melvin-van-peebles-dont-write-a-check-your-ass-cant-cash'Unstoppable: Melvin Van Peebles, Gordon Parks, and Ossie Davis in Conversation': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AHuW5bxVamg'Interview with Olumide Productions': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRn9nr5qXOgMarlon Brando Eulogy for Bobby Hutton: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1g05Sb9CcnEInterview with Reelin In the Years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B48FJ03-tkUVisionary Project: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TeRJLgAbW-4&list=PLCwE4GdJdVRLS1R8f9-G8hihJQKmePpCW&t=116s'How To Eat Your Watermelon in White Company (And Enjoy It)' (2005) Dir. The Du-Rites' JAY MUMFORD, formerly known as the producer/emcee J-Zone, has worn many hats throughout his career—rapper, beat-maker, DJ, author/journalist, and finally drummer. J-Zone developed an underground rap following during the early 2000s indie hip-hop explosion. As he got older, Mumford grew increasingly jaded with the rap industry, before bottoming out. Sitting on the throne of a drum set, Jay would rediscover his passion for the funk music that first inspired him as a teenager. The major transition began to take shape in 2011, when J-Zone attempted to quit rap, write a hip-hop memoir, and start over as “Jay Mumford on drums” in his mid-30's. An unlikely story, but one definitively his own. On Episode 065, with no holds barred Jay Mumford takes us through this roller-coaster journey, career highlights, lowlights, battles between his ears, and a-ha moments along the way. 2:30 - Thanks to Discovery 2023, Bicycle Day, Electric KoolAid for sponsoring ep.065 6:30 - The Upful Update 9:45 - Introducing JAY MUMFORD (fka J-Zone) 13:30 - INTERVIEW w/ Jay (119 mins) Currently, Jay Mumford holds down the drumkit in a few bands, his main gig is The Du-Rites, a garage-funk duo with Tom Tom Club guitarist Pablo Martin. Mumford has been working with Adrian Quesada's solo projects, including a performance on Austin City Limits with an 18-piece ensemble, an evening Jay refers to as the best experience of his 25 year career. Mumford remains renowned for his ‘Royalty Free Drum Breaks' drum packs, ideal for sample-based producers to mine meticulously-crafted breakbeats laid down in his late grandparents' basement. For a few years, he moonlit as a music journalist, blogging nuanced topics in hip-hop and drummer culture. Jay hosted the phenomenal ‘Give The Drummer Some,' - an illuminating interview series for now-defunct Red Bull Music Academy. During the pandemic lockdown, we had a chance to talk online with Mexican American indigenous visual artist and designer Ivan Vazquez. Using art as a weapon Ivan's work portrays resilience by embracing and trusting community to help and guide him on his childhood journey growing up in Chicago. His work has allowed him to grieve the loss of best friends (Luis Trueba , Lino Diaz, Juan Zapata, and Daniel Aragon)and positively deal with trauma. His goal is to share his way of healing to others struggling. Ivan's has been featured in sponsored shows/charity and community events ranging from the Jordan Brand, Don Julio Tequila, Mountain Dew, Red Bull Music Academy, The NBA, Pepsi co. ,season 4 and 5 of “The Chi” on showtime, Howard brown health, broadway youth center and Toyota. I stored it away for over 15 years until I came across a 8th grade photo of them and had a epiphany . My art became the way I finally grieved and at the same time heal" its my way to pay tribute to them. My mission is to empower/educate youth with positive and relate-able alternative lifestyles. The representation of Chicago and hip hop culture in my work reflects the need for positive outlets , unity, love and positivity. My paintings are a reflection of how it feels and looks growing up in Chicago. The beauty and brutality the city is known for. My art embodies the four seasons and the need for balance in a city where if you don't stay grounded you get swept away. My subjects are often very young and don the masks of Aztec/Zulu and indigenous warriors and gods. The characters represent modern day warriors and ancestors we call on for strength and to summon spiritual powers. The visuals are meant to empower, unify, inspire and educate . There is a darkness in my work as well as a sense of serenity, promise, and light. My goal is to preserve and contribute to the culture and represent the mis and underrepresented." A veritable powerhouse of the Croatian techno scene Insolate has been establishing a global presence as a DJ and producer for over 20 years delivering as both a label boss at Out Of Place and the creative force behind their electrifying TRAUM events. Hailing from Osijek, Croatia, on the wide Croatian East – a town that at first glance a heavy industrial atmosphere overshadows, she is making her first steps as a DJ back in 1997 before taking over European and worldwide clubs. Her list of clubs and partys she played is impressive and includes Berghain, Rex, Tresor, Under Club, Club d'Anvers, Unter, Exit Festival, Tomorrowland, ADE and Dimensions Festival. Amongst many European clubs she played numerous tours in Colombia and recently added USA, China and Argentina to the list. As a producer, she's had a string of releases on highly respected labels including DJ Deep's Deeply Rooted, Marcelus's Singular and Developer's Modularz - supported and played by some of techno's finest including Laurent Garnier, DVS1, Dax J and Ilario Alicante. Also she released the stellar Obscure Object Of Desire EP on JoeFarr's new User Experience imprint, EP for a Suara and beautiful EP for Proletarijat, label run by Sev Dah. She also contributed to Ben Sim's compilation Tribology among giants as Planetary Assault Systems, Oscar Mulero, Steffi etc. and also made super interesting collaboration with french producer Arnaud le Texier and released EP with him for Prodigal Son. In 2019. she announced her debut album. The album Order is Chaos was released as a double vinyl and contains 10 tracks with extremely interesting collaborations with MATRIXXMAN and singer SARA RENAR. DJ Mag (UK) described album as “exciting journey thru trans-dimensional vocals, acid drenched sequences and floor obligated bangers.” Insolate is also a major contributor to the Croatian techno scene, so much so that she was in Ibiza to receive the award for "Dance Nation of the Year" at the DJ Awards on behalf of her nation. Her and long-time partner in crime Volster also run the event series TRAUM in her native Osijek. TRAUM events have cemented their place in the clubbing calendar with quality artists like Paula Temple, Antigone, Cassegrain, Janice, Etapp Kyle and Milton Bradley, just to name a few. The success of the TRAUM nights caught the attention of Red Bull Music Academy and Dimensions – both of which they have hosted official events for. Insolate being an international messenger of techno was recognised by Ambassador award that gave her a title "Croatia's ambassador overseas" for 2017. The final part of putting Osijek on the techno map was taken in 2015 with the launch of the label Out Of Place which Insolate runs with Volster. The label was named in honour of the beautiful struggle of carving your own way into the scene from a place that's well off the grid from the traditional capitals of techno. Now five releases strong, the label has already had contributions from heavyweights like Milton Bradley, Developer, JoeFarr, Francois X, Janice and many more. As a DJ, Insolate is well known for her no-compromise, pure-bred techno sets. It's clear to anyone who's seen her perform that she's an artist with a lot of experience but also plenty of inspiration and ambition, and a deep knowledge of techno. She is simply a natural presence in a DJ booth. If you've seen her play, you will know exactly what this means.
Alec and Nick discuss the poetry and politics of the experimental music festival. At first exploring the history and economy of music festivals such as Big Ears, Moogfest, Hopscotch, Red Bull Music Academy, and the European Festival circuit—the conversation then launches into a personal discussion probing Nick's curatorial role at ISSUE Project Room and Alec's curatorial role in the Neo-Pastiche: Changes In American Music Festival. Notions of community, consumption, and audience take shape around anecdotes of DIY organizing, non-profit culture, Dick Higgins, Black Mountain College, Alvin Lucier, George Lewis, and more.
English: The Iranian producer, ArtSaves (@artsvs), is known for his unpredictable, ominous sound which ventures into the experimental territory. ArtSaves music career started in Tehran in 2012, where nightclubs are prohibited by law and his performances remained within the confines of undisclosed parties. The producer recently released his latest EP ‘Bore’ under his own imprint Kopi / ک پ ی. ‘Bore’ compasses a melange of ambient and industrial techno ambiguously drawing inspiration from his Iranian heritage. As an alumni of the Red Bull Music Academy in Berlin 2018, ArtSaves was mentored by musical luminaries during his residency. Shifting between rhythmically dismal delicate beats to hardcore techno, he prefers to be indefinable but leaves the dance floor pulsating. ArtSaves is invested in amplifying the Tehran scene which is known for it’s highly experimental and haunting sounds. He currently resides between Vancouver and Tehran. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Español: El productor iraní ArtSaves (@artsvs), es conocido por su sonido impredecible y ominoso que se adentra en el territorio experimental. 体験できていない方はこの機会にどうぞお視聴ください One of Rio de Janeiro's DJ scene highlights, Carrot Green brings his city's musical traditions to the modern dancefloor. It is easy to find in his sets different styles such as Techno, Slo- House and Old Disco, making him a versatile artist that adapts to virtually any type of circumstance. As a Red Bull Music Academy's alumni in 2013, he expresses his eclecticism not only with sets at parties, clubs and festivals such as Voodoohoop, Mamba Negra, ODD, Dekmantel, Katerblau, Wilden Renate and Mareh Festival, but as well in his musical productions - solo or in partnership with national and international artists like the electronic music group Teto Preto, Eric Duncan and Selvagem. Last but not least, he signs collaborations and productions for Disco Halal, Barefoot Beats, Mamba Records and other labels. So don't be surprised if you hear Carrot Green playing a mix of Acid House and Techno after a set by Marcel Dettman at 7AM or hypnotizing the dance floor with shamanic rhythms at 90 BPM for an audience in trance. This is the kind of unpredictability that will remind you of Carrot Green for a long time. The show was meant to demonstrate the rise of a network of gay parties across the country that prioritize adventurous musical selections running the gamut from disco, to techno, and even more gnarled forms of club music. We figured it'd be a good time to get all of them in one room for a chat, so this week's episode of the THUMP podcast is an overstuffed two-parter on the state of the gay underground. Features editor Michelle Lhooq leads Aaron Clark (Honcho), Baronhawk Poitier (TNX), and aCe (Men's Room) through a discussion of the intersection of partying, politics and inclusivity on the first part. Then after a break, she returns with Jackie House (Honey Soundsystem), Ryan Smith (Wrecked), and Nita Aviance (The Carry Nation) for a... Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
While Reem was in Bulgaria, Toofless and Irshad were in Malaysia, OT got to kick it with Oddisee by the Dukkan while he was in Dubai for a Red Bull Music Academy gig. In this week's episode, OT spoke to Oddisee about unique upbringing as a half Sudanese half African American raised in Washington DC, the ups and downs with both sides of the family, how he stayed out of trouble, being politicized due to his backgrounds, and his responsibilities as a human and an artist to speak up, and the idiosyncrasies of being a 3rd culture kid. Pull up a seat and pass the time. We've had a soft spot for the productions of this weeks guest for some time now. We first posted about him back in October 2010 and have lapped up his productions ever since. ‘The Dead Rose Music Company' created his alias around a fictitious story involving feuding families and has since shed this mysterious origin in favour of a more honest and upfront approach. What started as reverb heavy edits of guilty pleasures has evolved into some of the most exciting productions of the past year putting out tracks on WOLF, Kolour, Sleazy Beats, Lets Play House and shortly on our House of Disco imprint. Todays mix from TDRMC is a live recording from his Red Bull Music Academy appearance in May that he recorded for us. So all mixing is done in real-time, the way it should be but often isn't. Starting with a Marvin Gaye track that miles ahead of its time the mix is as eclectic as you'd expect. Loaded with typically heavy grooves and pushing a deep, clubby feel this mix showcases his great skills as a selector. Treading a line between the depths of reverberating house and the enthusiasm of disco and soul the mix progresses with plenty of confidence and a woozy strength. There's even some swing in there among his unreleased tracks, to which we're privy a sneak peek. We caught up with him and chatted about fixing things, reverb, split personalities and of all topics…… ABBA!
