This episode of Big Blend Radio's "Toast to The Arts & Parks" Show features acclaimed trumpeter Delbert Anderson, the National Parks Arts Foundation (NPAF) artist-in-residence in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. A Diné jazz trumpet artist, composer, and educator, Delbert stands at the forefront of a vibrant Native American jazz scene. His work, deeply rooted in his Diné heritage, seamlessly integrates Navajo "spinning songs" of love, healing, and courtship with jazz and funk, thus marking him as a community-minded Indigenous individualist. Through his Delbert Anderson Quartet, Anderson revives the improvised sounds of the Diné circle, blending them with jazz, funk, and hip-hop. His compositions are inspired by Navajo Nation landscapes, historical events, and the desire to preserve and educate about Diné history. In this episode, I talk about Delbert Mann's precious 1955 film, "Marty." It tells the story of Marty, a 34-year-old butcher who has struggled all his life to find love. One night, he meets Clara, a woman who can relate to his loneliness. This is a film about the pain of invisibility and the power of connection. It's about what it means to finally feel seen after a lifetime of rejection. This is a deeply personal episode for me, but it's one that I hope reaches anyone who might need to hear it and to be reminded that they are not alone. The audio quality is the best I could provide right now. Apologies if it is not up-to-par for some. I did my best.Note: I am not doing regular or consistent episodes, but I will release an episode when I feel I have something of value to say about a film. You can follow me on Instagram, Letterboxd, and Tumblr. The year it was released, I was 16 and a drummer friend gave me this album on cassette, and I completely wore it out. Having not been exposed to much besides top-40 of the 1980s, and the contemporary gospel music of the day, The Texas Roadhouse music of McClinton was a revelation with its big, sweaty horns, incredibly tight rhythm section, and fine harp work. The band also featured the guitar work of David Millsap and Stephen Bruton, who brilliantly complemented each other with both their tones and parts. In a conversation with another Delbert veteran, James Pennebaker, I was clued into the fact that Bruton was sitting in with the band for the Austin City Limits TV taping that was also used as the audio for the "Live From Austin" album. Besides diving in on this wonderful album, we also take a look at the influence of the late great Stephen Bruton.Amazon Link to albumhttps://amzn.to/3Vg7fW2Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/album/3G0J7CgCqslFZf9XMSimIj?si=zTuTt-_qRKWqIOwfToJ-8QBruton playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/playlist/6MSreKA4PmWffPtJ1wJoZ3?si=96fc6ab90856495dStrings: D'Addario NYXL 95-44https://amzn.to/41rnl0V2023 Headstrong Lil' King with 12" Eminence GA-SC64 speakerhttps://headstrongamps.com/lil-king-amp#askzac #stephenbruton #delbertmcclinton Support the Show.

Episode 273: Thirty years ago, legendary R&B singer Delbert McClinton proved he was ahead of his time by launching his Sandy Beaches Cruise, a January festival at sea that featured his friends and associated artists from the bluesy side of Americana. Since then, the music cruise business has flourished across many genres. A company called Star Vista Live bought Sandy Beaches from Delbert a few years ago and now does the management while Delbert himself acts as host. I got a fortunate invitation to act as artist interviewer on this year's cruise, and they let me report my own account of this luxurious but accessible experience. In this hour you'll hear from Delbert himself, Mavericks lead singer Raul Malo, cruise lifer Marcia Ball, emerging artist Yates McKendree, singer Etta Britt, gospel great Anne McCrary, and more.
Incendiary trumpeter talks about making a living as a musician in 2024 and how he is learning to be himself on the bandstand.
Kristen and Carrie celebrate Chinese New Year 1974 Northwestern Ohio style with Delbert the LaChoy Dragon, Don Music and some groovy Summertime Gold. Join them as they compete to see who is the most interesting and make a salad dressing good enough to drink.
Trump takes a huge win in the Iowa Caucus. MSNBC refuses to play his victory speech. No pre-New Hampshire debate. Bad spending exposed by Rand Paul. And Delbert Hosemann is still a Democrat.

Two senior members are released from prison having served more than 40 years. They now have reservations about the MOVE organization. A rift in the family opens up. By the end of 2020, all remaining MOVE 9 are free. Delbert dies only months after his release, and the family now turns its focus to the future.
