Ciao, ragazzi! This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Wednesday, October 12th! It was meant to be the game that put Juventus back on track, a relatively easy game against unfancied opposition. Instead, the Juve team fly back from Israel with their tails between their legs and their bags packed for a ritiro until […]

Napoli put daylight between them and Atalanta at the top of Serie A after the Bergamaschi gave away a two-goal lead away to Udinese to draw 2-2. The draw meant that Napoli’s game, away at Cremonese a couple of hours later, was a chance for the Napoletans to go two points clear. It’s a situation […]
Massimiliano Allegri yesterday gave us lots of great images of him freaking out at the sight of his team going down 2-0 to Milan at San Siro. A goal from Fikayo Timori in first half stoppage time and another in the second half from Brahim DIaz gave victory to Stefano Pioli’s men and after the […]

Tomorrow's Napoli game against Atalanta will see Luciano Spalletti call up two young players from their Primavera squad to the senior team. The Napoletans have a huge injury list as well as several key suspensions. One of those out is striker Victor Osimhen. With right back Giovanni Di Lorenzo out, the coach is tipped to call up 21 year old Alessandro Zanoli and put him straight into the starting lineup. While up front, he is also short of numbers but 18 year-old leading scorer for the youth team, Giuseppe Ambrosino is expected to feature at some point. In a week where the lack of opportunities for young Italian talent has come into sharp focus, it bodes well for the league if Spalletti's gamble pays off. The award was for last season when he guided Inter Milan to the scudetto, but that was almost a whole year ago! Conte is currently suffering at Spurs. Things have not gone his way and it looks like he won't get the billions that he likes to spend on a squad to get it up to scratch. So, he gets a nice award from his peers in Italy and then La Gazzetta carries a headline today asking simply "Would Conte Return?" He is also on the front of Corriere Dello Sport, so is there a co-ordinated effort to bring Antonio Conte back to Serie A? Could be, and there are several potential groups behind it. One could be Inter, who have gone off the boil somewhat under Inzaghi, especially in 2022. Out of the Champions league, no longer in control at the top of Serie A and only the Coppa Italia offering their best shot at a trophy. Is someone at Inter pulling media strings to bring Conte back, possibly even with Lukaku, who is also not quiet about wanting to return to Inter? Or how about Juventus? Less likely than it would have been a few months ago. Allegri's team are on the march and Conte is also not especially popular in Turin. Or maybe it's Conte himself? Putting out the feelers so that one of Italy's giants might make contact if they knew he would be open to an approach? Dare I say it? Maybe even an attempt to regain the role of Azzurri coach? Who knows? It does feel like he won't be at Spurs next season though, he just hasn't gelled with the squad, who seem to have accepted mediocrity and inconsistency, which Conte simply does not understand or accept. It's going to be an interesting few months though! With World Cup failure and a meaningless friendly out of the way, we can turn our attentions back to Serie A, which returns in full this weekend. Milan sit at the top of the tree, three points ahead of Napoli, who are a further 3 points ahead of Inter, with Juve just four points behind them in 4th. This weekend's highlights are definitely the Derby d'Italia between Juventus and Inter, and the game in bergamo between Atalanta and Napoli. It could be a massive weekend for Milan as any of their rivals could easily drop points while Pioli's men have a straightforward game at home to Bologna on Sunday night, after everyone else has played. Napoli are well short of fit players, though, and the last team they will want to play is Atalanta, who on their day, can take anyone apart. Definitely missing for Napoli will be Rrahmani and Osimhen who are suspended, while Di Lorenzo, Meret and Petagna are definitely out injured. Add to that doubts over Anguissa, Zielinski, Ounas and Fabian Ruiz and Spalletti has an entire midfield potentially missing. The injury list does mean a possible start for Dries Mertens. Italy went a goal down after just 4 minutes but were 2-0 by half time through Roma's Bryan Cristante and Sassuolo's Giacomo Raspadori. Another Raspadori goal in the second half put Italy 3-1 up before TUrky scored a messy second late on. There was still time for a couple of great saves from Donnarumma who desperately needs to regain some confidence. But the game also potentially the end of an era with what could have been the last Azzurri appearance of Giorgio Chiellini. After the game, Chiellini posted on Instagram, saying: “Thursday was a sad page in the history book of our careers, we will always have a void inside us. But in sport, just as in life, we must have the strength to get back on our feet. Always. “And these lads will write more important pages in the history of Italian football, giving us all the same emotions we were fortunate enough to experience last summer. Always and forever, FORZA AZZURRI.” At 37, another tournament would be unlikely for Chiellini, who gained his 116th cap last night. Chiellini is popular the world over, a true Italian warrior whose dedication to defending and some of the dark arts (just ask Bakayao Saka) is admired across football. In his press conference yesterday, Mancini said: “We've spoken these days. I think we have the same ideas on everything. We'll talk again in the next few days. Now, let's focus on the game, then we'll see what we must improve in the future. It's all here,” “We need to start again and think about different situations. We have difficult games ahead. We'll see. “Despite the huge disappointment, I am happy to see that the job we've done in the last four years has been appreciated. The victory at the Euros was not the only good thing we did. The lads deserve the praise for what we've done. I can say that these guys are special. The group is exceptional,” “We should have won the qualification group with at least two points more than Switzerland. We should have won the game in Basel 3-0. Since September, we haven't been lucky, and I can't blame my players because we've always played good football. We were not clinical. We made mistakes, we wasted many chances. “I think you all remember the game in Basel. We should have scored two goals, at least. We'll look at our errors. Now it's useless to talk. We don't want to find excuses.” “We've always tried to give our best in these four years by winning and playing a different brand of football with an offensive mentality. We made it, but in football, things can change overnight.” “We'll have a chance to add younger players who, we hope, will have more chances with their clubs. This is crucial. There are many young players who can have the ambition to play with Italy and with a bright future ahead. “We can look at the potential of young players. The current team, with some addition, could have won the World Cup. There are many things we need to see, surely, we'll change something from the next games. We must look at the Euros in two years and prepare the team to qualify. This is our job. “I wanted to win a European championship and a World Cup. I'll have to wait for the World Cup, but I like this job and I want to organize something important. Aside from this disappointment, the rest goes on…” Tonight, Italy play Turkey but the new era won't start just yet. Italy needs its clubs to play more young Italian talent to build a squad for the next 10 years and that won't happen overnight but in words at least, we have a way forward. It seems the Italian FA, the FIGC, is looking to focus on moving on from their failure to qualify for the World Cup. They have started a review of the last 8 months since the victory at the Euros to understand how we went from leading the group to throwing away precious qualification points in games against Bulgaria and Switzerland that would have put Italy through to Qatar. There is also the matter of having to play the ridiculous game of failure against Turkey, who were also beaten in the World Cup playoffs, in a match that means absolutely nothing to anyone. After that game, the process will begin with games coming up in June against Argentina, England, Hungary and Germany. These games are expected to be used as a chance for Mancini to experiment and build for the future. Mancini has not yet made a decision on whether or not he will stay on as national coach but hopefully this process will help him see the benefit in staying. Italy is slowly coming to terms with the fact that they will not be at the World Cup in Qatar this year and thankfully, it feels like something approaching calm is taking over from the initial rage, fury and terrible suggestions for the way forward. Top of the tree of reason is Roberto Mancini, who took to Instagram to express his views on the defeat to North Macedonia and its impact. “Football can sometimes be a merciless metaphor for life. “Last summer we were on the top of Europe after completing one of the most beautiful feats in the history of the national team. A few hours ago we woke up at one of the most dramatic points. “We went from total joy to frustrating disappointment. “It's really hard to accept, but accepting defeats in life is part of a healthy path of human and sporting growth. “Let's take some time to reflect and understand clearly. The only right move now is to raise our heads and work for the future." Thank God for the last sentence. I hope it means that he won't be rushed into a decision on his future and it appears there is no pressure from the FA for him to go, or even announce anything. I feel that had he made an instant decision, he would have gone but the more time he has, the more time he takes, the more likely we are to take stock, review and plan for the future without having to deal with the disruption of a new coach. After Italy's humiliating defeat to North Macedonia on Thursday which means that there will be no Italy at the World Cup again, the attack dogs are out and what they want is to know who to blame. Is it Jorginho, who had two opportunities to put Italy through much earlier in the qualification campaign? He missed both penalties, either one would have given Italy enough points to top the group and qualify. Was it Ciro Immobile, who is one of the world's great strikers at club level but cannot turns into a donkey in the shirt of the Azzuri? Is it Gigio Donnarumma, whose positioning for the North Macedonia goal was reminiscent of someone who had never played in goal before playing in a Dad's team. Is it Roberto Mancini, who insisted that his Euros-winning squad had what was needed to qualify automatically and constantly told us how Italy would not only qualify for the World Cup but win it? I have yet to find the part in the FIFA rulebook where it says that once a clear person responsible has been found then you get to play at the world cup, so what is the point of pointing fingers, destroying people's credibility and holding a single person up to the hatred and anger of the mob? It's a waste of time, doesn't change anything and only turns people into enemies. However, this will run and run and will potentially see us lose the best coach in 20 years and a return to having a new coach every couple of years. Mancini had a plan. He somehow got this squad to come together and win a major international trophy and restore some pride to Italy after it had been crushed by the pandemic, but no, he got something wrong and needs to pay. What is this playground nonsense? Is it more important to see someone pay the price for Italy's failure to qualify or that people involved understand where they went wrong and learn from it? Treat it as a chance to improve? Unfortunately, Italy will throw the baby out with the bathwater and we will be lucky to see Italy at a World Cup in the next twenty years. Italy lost 1-0 at home to North Macedonia last night, meaning that Italy fail to qualify for the World Cup for the second time in a row. Unbelievable. Thanks to two missed Jorginho penalties that would have given Italy the required points to win the groups, we are once again faced with nothing but shame and ridicule. The 4-time World Champions reduced to this. Italy battered North Macedonia with no quality up front. Berardi tried, failed and wasted, Immobile ineffective. Insigne absent. Donnarumma's footwork for the winning goal in injury time comical. The players can say what they want about being devastated, but the entire nation is made to suffer because of this feeble qualifying performance. Mancini will hopefully stay but he must free himself from the curse that has befallen every national coach before him - loyalty and reliance to players who have served him well in the past, even if that past was only months ago. One moment of brilliance every year from Insigne is not enough to make him an international player. Hoping that two central defenders in their late thirties would be available. Insisting that Immobile will start every game. Man Alive, what a shambles. This is Andrew with your Calcio Daily for Thursday March 24th, our 210th daily show in a row! Hey! Send us a donation via the Fountain podcast app and subscribe to the channel on YouTube! You can also buy today's show as an NFT, the link is in the description. Italy have not yet qualified for the World Cup in Qatar but tonight starts what is effectively a 5-day mini tournament that will determine the direction of Italian football for the next 10 years. Italy have a great coach and some great players. Last summer, Mancini got more from the squad than they had to give, it was a truly magical summer. But since then, too many draws have seen us here. Wasted opportunities to qualify allowed Switzerland to surge ahead and take a place in Qatar, so tonight's play off game against North Macedonia should hae been avoided but here we are. Mancini has defensive doubts with Chiellini unlikely to start and Bonucci not having trained at all, so in defence it looks like Bastoni and one out of Roma's Mancini and Lazio's Acerbi. Napoli's Eljif Elmas will be missing for the visitors but they have Italian experience elsewhere in the squad. Everyone is focusing on the potential play off final against Portugal or Turkey but this game is not yet won.
