Podcasts about Five star

Meet Chandler Pedini, our October 2026 Roofr of the Month. Chandler is a sales and project manager at Five Star Roofing in Buffalo, New York. He was on roofs at 10 years old working at the family business, and saw exactly what a life of roofing does to your body. So he tried his hand at accounting, and lasted exactly one day before coming back. Now, he splits his time between job sites and his desk, which turned out to be the perfect balance. Chandler walks us through building a business with 40 in-house crew while most of the industry subs everything out, cross-training crews to survive Buffalo winters, and why Five Star's Instant Estimator leads close at nearly double the rate of their regular leads. If you've ever wondered whether ditching subcontractors is worth the headache, this one's for you. In this episode: • Growing up on roofs (literally, at age 10) • Why Chandler tried accounting and lasted one day • The hard transition from the field to the office • Why Five Star keeps almost everything in-house • The real cost (and the payoff) of ditching subcontractors • Cross-training crews to survive Buffalo's winters • How Instant Estimator generated 35 leads in its first month • Why Instant Estimator leads close at up to 65% • The hidden benefit of looking like a "next level" company • Five Star's 2027 goal: "do less work, make more money"

The meeting was an Agent Power Huddle focused on scripting, with Ed Lane teaching about “reverse offers,” where the seller writes an offer to a specific buyer. Ed explained how he recently used this technique to put a $1.5 million listing in escrow, detailing the use of a 2-1 buydown as a sweetener and how to structure, present, and negotiate these offers. He discussed when to use reverse offers, how to select the right buyer, and how to address seller objections about appearing desperate or giving away leverage. Alyson shared her challenges with a slow-moving listing and discussed marketing efforts, potential renovations, and the use of AI and lender-funded rehab programs. The conversation also covered REO business, with Ed and Alyson discussing REOX, Five Star, and their experiences with bank-owned properties and asset managers. Ed emphasized the value of attending conferences for building relationships and generating business.

What does it take to stay at the top for thirty years? Melina Glavas and Stewart Mann lead event sales at The Little Nell, Aspen's only five-star, five-diamond hotel, where weddings happen at eleven thousand feet and Forbes has awarded five stars every year since 1996. In this conversation they join James and Otto to talk about the thing that actually drives it all: relationships. Melina, who has been at the Nell for twenty years, and Stewart, who joined recently and plans never to leave, get honest about how they build partnerships that last, why they believe everyone succeeds or fails together, and how a new planner or photographer can genuinely break into a place like this. Along the way they share the culture behind three decades of five-star service, the story of one of the best wine programs in the world, and what it really takes to pull off a wedding on top of a mountain. Part masterclass, part love letter to Aspen.

In this episode, I'm joined by Jen Berbas, team lead of the Berbas Group in Austin, Texas, to discuss how she uses AI to replace a fragmented software stack with custom-built tools that automate workflows, reduce friction, and create a more seamless client experience. What does it really take to build a career as a traditional Butler at the highest levels of luxury hospitality and private service? In this episode of Recruitment Diaries: Life in Private Staffing, Philippa is joined by Tony Jazz, an experienced Butler whose career has taken him through some of London's most prestigious five-star hotels, including The Connaught, Claridge's and The Savoy, before moving further into private service, events and consultancy. Tony's career has been built on hard work, adaptability and a willingness to step into situations he had never experienced before. From arriving at the office at 6am to master a completely unfamiliar role, to luxury procurement, managing Butler teams and creating memorable experiences for high-profile guests, his story is a brilliant example of where saying yes to opportunities can take you. Together, Philippa and Tony discuss the evolution of traditional Butlering, moving between five-star hotels and private service, and why formal training can teach you the fundamentals — but experience, intuition and understanding your Principal are what truly make an exceptional Butler. In this episode, Philippa and Tony cover:

Getting a veteran off the street solves tonight's problem. Recovery means rebuilding what comes next.Five Star Veteran Center CEO John Bear explains why his organization is not a shelter—it's a recovery program designed to help veterans regain stability and independence. After his own transition from a 32-year Navy career, John now leads a team addressing veteran homelessness through three interconnected pillars: mental health, financial stability, and physical health. This conversation gets especially powerful when John shares the story of a veteran who arrived battling addiction and anger. Through Veterans Treatment Court, Five Star, and skilled-trades training, he became drug- and alcohol-free, earned three certifications, secured an electrical apprenticeship, found permanent housing, and began rebuilding his relationship with his daughter as he became a grandfather. In this episode, you'll discover:• Understand why housing alone isn't enough and how Five Star prepares veterans to become self-sustaining rather than simply providing a temporary bed.• Recognize the role mental health plays in veteran homelessness, including why John believes professional support for the trauma surrounding housing instability is essential to long-term recovery. • See what a complete turnaround can look like through one veteran's journey from addiction and legal trouble to certifications, employment, housing, and renewed family connection.• Apply John's military transition lessons, from using Onward Opportunity to earn a project management certification to networking his way through a civilian employment system dominated by online applications and AI resume screening. About John BearJohn Bear retired from the U.S. Navy after 32 years, rising from enlisted nuclear machinist mate to commissioned Surface Warfare Officer through the Seaman to Admiral-21 program. His career culminated in command of the USS St. Louis. Today, he serves as CEO of Five Star Veteran Center, helping veterans facing homelessness and housing instability build independent, stable lives. If your service is great and your review count is thin, stale, or both, this one's for you. You're losing jobs to competitors who aren't better than you. They just look better in the places homeowners go to make decisions. I'm Chad Peterman, CEO of Peterman Brothers. We generate over 800 reviews a month, not because every job goes perfectly, but because we built a system that consistently gets happy customers to actually leave one. It's not luck and it's not chasing. It's a process, and once it's running, it runs on its own. Your review count and recency are your first impression in most of the decisions coming your way. They're also completely within your control. Build the system, ask at the right moment, make it one step, and answer every negative one with ownership. Then let it run. How many reviews did you generate last month? Drop the number in the comments. It tells you a lot about whether your system is actually working. Want to connect with me and my team? Some players bring skill. Some bring athleticism. Some bring energy.Sydney Youngblood brings all three. On this episode of SportsLifeTalk's You Got Next, Savage Season heads to Virginia Beach, Virginia, to introduce one of the rising guards in the Class of 2029.The 5-foot-9 combo guard from Catholic High School is already earning national recognition as a five-star prospect and one of the young names to know in girls basketball. But rankings only tell part of her story.Sydney's journey began by watching her two older brothers, Joseph and Nate, play basketball. Seeing them compete inspired her to pick up the game herself, and every missed shot made her want to work even harder.Today, Sydney describes her game as energetic, confident, and built around leadership on both ends of the floor. She can attack downhill, create for herself, get to the rim, find teammates, and make plays with the size and strength of a big guard. But don't overlook the defensive side of her game.Sydney takes pride in defense because she understands one simple truth:Defense leads to offense. That two-way mentality has helped her become one of the country's promising young guards while competing with Boo Williams on the Nike EYBL circuit. She explains why her family chose Boo Williams, what the organization's culture means to her, and how playing against elite competition continues preparing her for the next level.Sydney already has international experience, too.During the Moment of Truth, she reveals that she represented the United States while playing basketball in Serbia—an opportunity that allowed her to compete beyond the borders of the U.S.Now she's focused on adding even more weapons to her game.Sydney is working on her shooting, shot creation, and finishing over taller defenders. For a guard who already loves attacking the basket, improving those areas could make her even more difficult to stop. When Chat SLT gives her three words to describe her game—explosive, fearless, and dynamic—Sydney chooses fearless as the most important. That tells you everything about her approach.Sydney also shares the meaning behind wearing jersey No. 2. She chose the number in honor of Gianna “Gigi” Bryant, who inspired her as a young basketball player.Recruiting will become a major part of Sydney's journey, but she already knows what she wants in a college program.Family.She wants coaches who push their players, teammates who genuinely care about one another, and a program that values relationships beyond simply winning games.Away from basketball, Sydney enjoys drawing, watching movies and anime, FaceTiming her friends, making slime, and catching up on sleep whenever she gets the chance.

Jay Foreman and Austin Oerman picked up where they left off in hour one - trying to determine if it was ever okay for coaches to have different rules for different players based on pedigree, potential, and production. Austin pointed to examples from Fred Hoiberg's Nebraska MBB program to help illustrate his point about Williams Nwaneri.Don't forget to like, follow, subscribe, and share the show!Follow The Ticket: @937theticket on social mediaFollow Jay on Twitter: @foreman5644Follow Austin on Twitter: @austin_oermanAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Welcome back, WIFs.Back by popular demand, Lauren and Michelle are bringing you another mini cozy from their Bring Back the 90's series. And this time, they're going back to school. Before back-to-school shopping meant clicking a link, buying a pre-selected supply box, and checking everything off a list, there was something special about walking the aisles and picking out exactly what you wanted. In this episode, the sisters take a nostalgic trip back to 90's back-to-school season, from Venture shopping trips and Five Star notebooks to Trapper Keepers, Lisa Frank folders, smelly pens, Dr. Grip pens, eraser caps, pencil cases, and the highlighters that were somehow way more exciting than they needed to be.Then there's lunch.Capri Suns, Lunchables, Kudos bars, Gushers, Fruit by the Foot, Ecto Cooler, Dunkaroos, SnackWell's, Handy Snacks, and those classic bologna sandwiches packed with love. And because this is the 90's, there are plenty of unexpected memories along the way—including paper bag book covers, rubber cement, white-out, eraser vacuums, and the fact that we were apparently trusted with paper guillotines.Press play, get cozy, and take a walk down the back-to-school aisles with Lauren and Michelle.Because the 90's were cozy—and maybe it's time to bring a little bit of that back into our adult lives, too.Resources:A Cozy Night For ReadersFollow Us!Shop Our Seasonal CandlesCheck Out Our Website

Episode 265: Ryan Fuller started questioning online reviews after two terrible stays at highly-rated vacation rentals. Both had 4.9-star ratings. After Ryan posted negative reviews, the people behind each listing independently offered him £200 to change his review to five stars.  "It was disappointing," he said, "that clearly many people took them up on this offer." On the flip side, the experience explained something that had been bothering him for a while: Places with thousands of positive reviews could still turn out to be terrible. So Ryan, founder of Larrocos Labs and a serial entrepreneur, decided to investigate.  He built an AI system that has now analyzed hundreds of thousands of reviews covering roughly 22,000 restaurants. One example of what he found: In a focused analysis of 4,000 restaurants, about 70% showed at least one unusual review pattern. Some had sudden bursts of five-star reviews. He found one case in which roughly 100 reviews had been submitted within a two-minute period. Others featured suspiciously similar language, unusual concentrations of reviews mentioning particular employees, or reviewers whose histories raised questions about their credibility. None of that proves a review is fake. As Ryan explains, the goal is not to establish absolute truth, but to determine how much confidence we should place in what we are seeing. Ryan discusses what this means for consumers, platforms, and anyone relying on AI-generated information. He also explores an alternative: systems that show their work, identify potential sources of distortion, and tell us how confident they are rather than presenting uncertain conclusions as facts. He sums it up well: "I think we're living in a world where understanding what is real or what is true is going to become one of the most difficult problems for humans to deal with." I think we're living in a world where understanding what is real or what is true will become one of the most difficult problems for humans to deal with on even just everyday stuff like picking a restaurant." 26:00 "Platforms that start to be more transparent about sources and degree of confidence and potential risks for any information they're providing will become more popular." 28:00 "It's almost just like an arms race. There's no sudden advance in tech or approach that's gonna solve the problem. I'm just pontificating here; I don't have good answers, but I do think this is maybe the problem of our time." 33:00 "The devious thing about AI is that it sounds so credible; we're going through a transitional phase where we're not as well attuned to what the tells are when confidence isn't there." 37:00 "I always try to show the work. One thing we do is we have a letter grade that we assign each restaurant for overall quality. So, it can be an A, a B-plus, whatever. And the very first thing underneath the score, the overall letter, is why it got a B-plus." Why do we rate everything and why do we do so on a scale of one to five stars? What happens when systems designed to help us make better choices start influencing our behaviour in ways we don't necessarily notice?Episode SummaryMy guest is Benji Wilson, a journalist, TV critic and author of Rate This Book. Benji's day job involves rating other people's work, but when his children pointed out that Rotten Tomatoes was also rating him, it prompted him to investigate the ratings culture that surrounds us. In our conversation, we explore where ratings came from, why the five-star system became dominant and the psychology that makes us pay attention to the opinions of people we've never met.We discuss social proof and the wisdom of crowds, why we often use ratings to avoid making bad decisions rather than to identify the very best option, and what happens when reviews are fake, manipulated or simply unfair. We also explore the consequences of moving from rating products and services to rating people, including Uber drivers, hospitality workers and doctors, and why a single negative review can have significant consequences.Benji also explains how ratings might have applications in places we wouldn't necessarily expect, including workplace appraisals and even democracy, where alternative voting systems use ratings to allow people to express more nuanced preferences. And, appropriately for someone who has written a book called Rate This Book, we discuss what it feels like when the ratings are turned back on you — including why an anonymous three-star review might actually be more useful than a perfect five-star score.Guest ProfileBenji is a journalist, author and TV critic. His book, Rate This Book, explores how ratings and reviews came to dominate modern life, the psychology that makes them work and what happens when the systems designed to help us make choices begin shaping those choices themselves.LinksBenji's website — more about Benji and his work.Rate This Book — How Star Ratings Took Over the World, published by New Modern Arcade.Rate This Book audiobook — read by Benji Wilson.AI-Generated Timestamped Summary00:00 — Introduction: why we rate everything01:45 — Benji's life as a TV critic and discovering that Rotten Tomatoes was also rating him.03:30 — Where ratings came from, from our instinct to rank things to the emergence of star ratings.08:30 — The psychology of ratings: prospect theory, avoiding bad decisions and why we rely on other people's opinions.10:15 — Why five stars became the dominant rating system.16:00 — Experts versus crowds, social proof and why thousands of reviews can feel so persuasive.20:00 — Fake reviews, manipulated ratings and why critical thinking still matters.25:00 — What happens when we move from rating products to rating people — and the real-world consequences of negative reviews.29:30 — Reputation management, review blackmail and whether ratings platforms need greater regulation.33:30 — Ratings and democracy: could STAR voting offer a less binary way of choosing politicians?38:30 — Workplace appraisals, reciprocal ratings and what happens when a numerical score overwhelms everything else.43:00 — Uber and how our relationship with rating systems changes over time.44:30 — What it feels like to have Rate This Book rated — including Benji's mysterious three-star review.47:30 — Why three stars may be our most natural — and least useful — rating.52:30 — How writing the book changed Benji's own behaviour and why trusted personal recommendations can beat aggregated reviews.56:30 — Why companies really want our ratings and the commercial incentives behind endless requests for feedback.01:01:00 — Amazon Vine, gamification and how rating systems can influence the people doing the rating.01:02:30 — Where to find Benji and Rate This Book, plus the inevitable invitation to rate both the book and the podcast.
