Tom Clarkson is joined in the Marina Bay paddock by F1 correspondent Lawrence Barretto and Australian motor racing journalist Greg Rust to reflect on the Singapore Grand Prix. McLaren have become World Champions for the second year in a row, but the big talking point was the opening lap contact between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Will that incident change how their championship battle plays out in the final six races, especially now the team have wrapped up the Constructors' title? George Russell converted a stunning pole into his second win of the season with a dominant performance from lights out. But as his wait for a new contract with Mercedes continues, why does Lawrence think Russell is in a similar situation to the one Carlos Sainz found himself in at Ferrari? Behind George was Max Verstappen in P2. It's his fourth podium in a row and, given Red Bull's previous struggles in Singapore, does this result confirm they've finally turned a corner with their car? And if Max does significantly close the gap in the title fight this year, will McLaren favour one of their drivers over the other to ensure they win a first Drivers' Championship since 2008? Also on the agenda, the guys discuss another frustrating weekend for Ferrari, while celebrating impressive points finishes from Sainz, Fernando Alonso and Ollie Bearman. Join Discourse and contribute to the Spotlight, and join the conversation - a small monthly donation gets you membership to our community, and that allows you to drive discussion around these shows, and get even more value and insight from what other listeners are sharing.Show notesIn Spotlight this week, we look back at a packed weekend of sports action and offer insights on the big events. We kick it off with the AFL (1:39), where the Grand Final was played, and where listener Josh sent in an article exploring how the body shape and size of players have evolved over the years. Gareth wonders whether the players adapt to the game, or whether the game adapts to the athleticism of its players, and Ross explains the physiological equivalent of 'form follows function'.Then we move to Rugby (9:56), where England were crowned World Champions at the weekend, crowing an unbeaten World Cup cycle in which they've averaged 50 points a match and not lost a single match. The final wasn't exactly smooth sailing, and Gareth and Ross share some thoughts on what impressed us, and where Canada may have fallen short, with hopes for continued growth in the game. From Rugby to cycling for a brief last look back at the Rwanda World Champs (23:10), but where off-bike news in the form of the UCI back-pedal on handlebar widths and other policy changes are the main focus of conversation.Cycling gives way to golf (38:48), and the Ryder Cup, which looked like a foregone conclusion until it wasn't, and one of the year's great sports spectacles unfolded in New York. We learn how Europe used data analytics and simulations to optimize its foursome and fourball combinations, and wonder when data becomes a hinderance as opposed to a helper in sport? In response to a spate of serious ACL injuries in the NFL and in football (51:58), Gareth wonders whether something is happening, perhaps related to the training and conditioning of athletes, or the turf, to increase ACL injury risk? Ross is less sure, explaining how rare injuries can throw up misleading 'patterns', compounded by media bias.We wrap up with some doping stories (55:52), including the CAS decision in the case of Erriyon Knighton, who was initially cleared of doping when he was able to show contamination of an oxtail meal he consumed. But CAS didn't see it the same way, and he got a four year ban because of their interpretation of the pharmacokinetics and the relative levels of the banned substance in the oxtial compared to in his urine. We also go to Kenya, where an athlete admitted not only to taking EPO, but explaining how he obtained it. Whether it's a truthful account is anyone's guess. And finally (1:03:16), the NFL came to (Dublin) town last weekend, and the juxtaposition of some high profile rugby players and the NFL kicked off a conversation comparing the two sports. We end with a semi lighthearted look at the helmet and pad culture of American Football, and offer thoughts on why rugby's lack of protective equipment doesn't necessarily make it more dangerous.LinksTaller, leaner, faster AFL playersYou can read the Knighton CAS decision hereNo Laying Up Golf Analytics Podcast Hosted on Acast. When we recorded this show the day before James flew out to Baku, we did not expect Williams to be up on the podium delivering in real life what James was theoretically describing to us on the show. Podiums are of course part of the development plan, but not yet. When James came to see us at Business of Sport HQ last week, we talked through both what he has done to position the team for future success, and what he still needs to do. In a sport that requires so many minds pulling together, utilising a vast array of talents, the prospect of building what is popularly termed as ‘winning culture' could seem daunting; where do you even start? For James, it was recognising that even in a sport of technology and science, people and culture are what makes you win. This weekend's result would place Williams ahead of where James has set expectations. But don't get me wrong, this result in Baku will have been celebrated in the halls of Grove, because no matter how long term the strategy for success is, these wins you pick up on the way are integral to showing the team that what they're doing is on the right path, and from James' perspective (though he'd never look at it like this) that he's the man to deliver for them. This is James Vowles on the business of Williams and F1…and a taste of what's to come.Timestamps:00:00 Intro03:54 Rebuilding Williams Through Culture07:18 Balancing Past Success with a New Identity10:54 Williams' Long-Term Plan for Success17:31 What Vowles Brings to Sainz & Albon22:35 Can Money Alone Deliver F1 Success?25:22 Does Losing Money Matter in F1 Ownership?28:23 Turning Heavy Investment Into Performance30:45 Williams' New Revenue Streams34:25 How Teams Compete for the Same Sponsors37:37 Will Formula 1 Control Its Own Platform41:30 Overcoming Challenges as a New Team Principal46:10 The Mediafication of F1 Leadership47:30 Quick-Fire RoundIn Today's Episode We Discuss:1. Rebuilding Williams from the Ground Up:Why James left the comfort of Mercedes to take on the challenge of reviving one of Formula One's most historic but struggling teams. How he discovered Williams was “a bankrupt organisation” on arrival and why he likens it to running a 50-year-old startup. The long-term plan to make Williams both competitive and profitable again by 2028, balancing heavy investment with financial disciplineHow James is instilling accountability, long-term thinking, and a “break everything” mindset to push the team beyond survival.2. The Culture of Performance:The importance of ego-free leadership from drivers like Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz in shaping a winning environmentThe real split between car and driver performance and why drivers remain the best “sensors” for development. What James learned from working with Schumacher, Rosberg, and Hamilton, and how those lessons are applied to Albon and Sainz today. Why humility, confidence, and resilience separate the very best drivers from the rest3. The Business of F1:The realities of cost caps, sponsorship, and commercial growth in modern F1.Why Williams' sponsorship strategy is about authentic partnerships, not stickers on a car and how deals like Atlassian reflect the team's values.James' candid view on asset values, media rights, and how F1 must evolve its broadcasting model to engage younger fans4. The Future of the Sport:Why two-day race weekends could be the future, and how unpredictability makes F1 compelling. His view on an 11th team, the balance of tradition versus innovation, and how Netflix and Drive to Survive changed the sport's global appeal. What excites him most about the years ahead: leaving a lasting legacy at Williams and returning the team to the front of the grid.A huge thank you to our amazing partners on the show:Stryde Bringing sports investment opportunities to your door. Based in Boulder, Colorado Erin is the head coach for EC Fit. Her clients include the dynamic duo of Mirinda Carfrae (3 x Ironman World Champion) and Tim O'Donnell (fastest American ever at Kona). Aside from the World Champions she coaches, Erin also coaches everyday people - like me! She's a visionary who is changing what it means to be a strong athlete and the best strength training for endurance athletes. In this conversation we discuss:* her career as a basketball player, including playing professionally in Europe, * how her love of strength training started from a need to become stronger for basketball,* her transition into strength training endurance athletes,* why addressing hormonal responses and creating more energy (rather than strength or speed) is at the heart of her philosophy, * why strength training for performance is about how well you can move, not how much you can lift,* the importance of rest and recovery and the easiest way to incorporate it into your busy schedule (essentially, forget all the tech; just do things that you find relaxing or that calm you down - which is *not* spending time on social media),* that she has the opposite of the Imposter Complex and why she's thought that she's “good enough” since the 5th grade,* why you can come last and still be victorious, * how she came to meet Dr Stacy Sims and how they came to collaborate on a strength program for women,* how her philosophy and approach to strength training has changed after learning from Dr Sims, and* her experience through peri-menopause and menopause as an athlete in her 50s.
On this week's episode, Mike and Dan reflect on Brentford reaching the fourth round of the Carabao Cup after penalty shootout victory over Aston Villa, as well as a dramatic finish against Chelsea in the league. Another positive performance from Keith Andrews' Bees ended in a penalty shootout against a struggling Villa side. Villa took the lead through Harvey Elliott, but an absolute worldie from Aaron Hickey levelled affairs in the second half, before Hakon Valdimarsson became the hero in the shootout after a tricky 90 minutes. We chat about Keith's approach to the cup and how it differs from Thomas Frank, the performance of debutant Benjamin Arthur, and our frightening strength off the bench. We also touch on a well deserved point against Chelsea at the Gtech. Fabio Carvalho's last minute equaliser meant the spoils would be shared after a Cole Palmer-inspired turnaround from the World Champions. We talk Jordan Henderson, long throw carnage, and players running themselves into the ground for Keith. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Adrian Reynard's motor racing outfit were one of the best in the world during the 1980s and '90s – winning multiple championships across Formula 3000, F3 and IndyCar. Reynard Racing Cars also held an impressive record of winning the first race of every major single-seater competition they entered. But when Adrian helped create the British American Racing F1 team in 1999, expectations were high and that previous success didn't quite translate in the pinnacle of motorsport. Speaking to Tom Clarkson, Adrian tells the fascinating story of BAR - how the team was formed with 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, why a big falling out with Team Principal Craig Pollock led to Adrian resigning, and how he helped lay the foundations for that team to later become World Champions as Brawn GP and then Mercedes. Adrian reflects on his F1 ventures before BAR as well - including a failed attempt to create his own team in 1990, despite selling his house to fund it, and his experiences with March F1 as a 29-year-old Technical Director in the 1980s. And Adrian also talks about inspiring legendary engineers like Rory Byrne and Pat Symonds, why he had an up-and-down relationship with the late Eddie Jordan, and the small part he played in the car that Michael Schumacher won his first F1 race in. In the fifty-ninth episode of Making Mt. Rushmore, host/moderator Steve Riddle welcomes Steve Bennett and James Gruenberg to discuss which Sports Moments deserve a place on their respective lists. Is the Miracle on Ice a no-brainer? What about the Saints winning Super Bowl XLIV? Does the David Tyree helmet catch in Super Bowl XLII grab a spot? Does the Michael Jordan buzzer beater in the 1998 NBA Finals or the Cubs winning the 2016 World Series deserve a place? After that, they discuss which Sports Calls will be part of that grouping. Can you argue that "Do You Believe in Miracles?" shouldn't get a spot? Will "Behind the Bag" be included? Is "May Day, May Day, May Day" in the conversation? What about "The Red Sox are World Champions" or "Havlicek Stole the Ball"? Prior to that, the trio pay tribute to the memory of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Ozzy Osbourne, and Hulk Hogan.

This episode is brought to you by Dropbox Dash, an official technology partner of the McLaren Formula 1 team. Now a multiple race winner, podium finisher and polesitter, Lando Norris is ready to take the next step in his Formula 1 career and become World Champion. To do so in 2025, he'll have to beat his equally talented teammate Oscar Piastri. But despite a sometimes challenging first half of the season, Lando says he's a better driver this year and just needs to find some consistency. Speaking to Tom Clarkson, Lando talks about how he's evolved as a driver on and off track since winning his first Grand Prix in Miami in 2024, what McLaren are doing differently in their approach since becoming Constructors' World Champions, how he moved on from his collision with Oscar in Canada and why he's working hard to switch off from Formula 1 when he's not racing. Lando also tells us how F1 The Movie star Brad Pitt performed in the 2023 McLaren car at Austin recently and what it would mean to win his home race at this weekend's British Grand Prix. Plus, Lando's race engineer Will Joseph joins the pod to discuss how their relationship has changed since they started working together in 2019.
