Juventus' Giorgio Chiellini - life lessons in sports and business from a world-class performer on and off the field

Alt Goes Mainstream

Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast. We went to a mecca of football to film the latest episode. This conversation takes us to Turin, Italy, where we were in the Juventus Creator Lab with Italian football (I mean soccer for the Americans) legend and one of the best defenders of all time Giorgio Chiellini.Giorgio's career and playing style were defined by Juventus' very motto, fino alla fine (“until the end”). It's also a mentality that he brings to every aspect of life on and off the pitch. After an illustrious playing career at one of the world's biggest clubs, Juventus, and a career that also included two World Cup appearances for Italy and winning the Euro 2020 as the Captain of Italy, Giorgio came back home to Turin rejoin the club where he starred for 17 years: Juventus. Giorgio has gone from the pitch to the boardroom, helping to lead Juventus as the Director of Football Strategy. He has brought the player's perspective to the business side of football, balancing the nuances of sports and business.Despite the demands that Giorgio faced on the field as a player to maintain a standard of play at the highest levels of the game, he found time during his career to pursue his passion for business. He received his MBA while playing for Juventus and also was involved in the player development side in his final years as a player at LAFC. More recently, he became an investor in LAFC and in Mercury13, a multi-club investor in women's football teams, including FC Como. He's also an active investor in the European startup community.Giorgio and I had a wide-ranging and fascinating conversation that covered several dimensions of the business of sport. We discussed:How teams, owners, and investors can balance both the sport and business aspects of the game. What it means for sports now that players can have bigger social followings than their clubs or leagues. How Juventus has built and amplified its brand through initiatives like the Creator Lab.How clubs like Juventus can help players build their off-field brand while maintaining a high-quality on-field product. How Giorgio's work off the field while playing informed how he wanted to spend his time post-career in business. What Giorgio's day-to-day is like as Director of Football Strategy for Juventus. Why Giorgio invested in LAFC and what he thinks about the future of the MLS.What American owners and investors can learn from European soccer clubs and owners, and what European clubs and owners can learn from American owners and investors. Thanks, Giorgio, for sharing your wisdom, expertise, and enthusiasm at the intersection of sports and business.Note: this episode was filmed in October 2025 with a plan to publish the conversation around the World Cup.Show Notes00:00 Split Second Decision01:06 A Message from Our Sponsor, Ultimus02:10 Meet Giorgio Chiellini04:17 What Is the Juventus Creator Lab04:36 Building Fans Through Content05:27 Football Brand Goes Global06:15 Revenue From Winning06:43 Two Hearts One Club07:52 Winning Versus Storytelling08:40 Fans Everywhere Now09:27 Too Many Games Problem09:51 Stakeholders and Calendar11:00 Owner Advice Communication11:28 From Kid to Club 14:12 Film Study for Matches15:02 The Saka Tactical Foul17:26 Social Media and Mental Health29:32 US World Cup Reality29:45 Grassroots Long Game30:09 MLS and USL Momentum30:14 Stadiums and Growth30:20 MLS Season vs Playoffs30:46 Supporters Shield Incentives31:11 Travel and Rest Mentality31:33 Europe Stakes Comparison31:54 Highlights Era Question32:24 Bite-Sized Sports Culture33:40 Choosing What to Watch33:55 Sports Must Adapt34:33 Owners Business View35:15 TV Rights and Strategy36:05 Institutional Money Trend36:42 Why Funds Love Sports37:04 Balancing Profit and Emotion38:12 Fiduciary Duty vs Winning39:15 Permanent Capital Advantage40:42 Mission Values Legacy41:54 Juventus DNA and Family44:31 Leadership Lessons Learned45:38 From Captain to Executive47:05 Humanity and Energy48:21 Player to Business Challenges50:00 Investing in Italian Startups51:47 How He Picks Investments52:43 Innovation and AI in Sport53:16 Favorite Alternative Investment54:34 Profitability and Winning55:21 ClosingA Word from Our Sponsor, UltimusThis episode of Alt Goes Mainstream is brought to you by Ultimus, the full-service fund administrator and transfer agent powering asset managers in private and public markets. Episode 324 is (finally) here. LAFC got back to their MLS schedule but left their offense somewhere along the way as the Houston Dynamo came into BMO and knocked off our boys, 2-0.  LAFC got off to a slow start, made even worse by Ezequiel Ponce's header to give the visiting side a 1-0 lead into the half. Steve would switch to a 4-3-3 in the second half, but it would do little to stem the tide. Lawrence Ennali did his best Sonic the Hedgehog impersonation as he flew by Ryan Hollingshead and Eddie Segura, made one touch to round Hugo Lloris, and softly tapped in his first MLS goal to double the lead. That would be all Houston would need, and, unfortunately, all Ennali would contribute, as he tore his ACL later in the match. Also on this episode, the LAFC Unified Team takes the pitch at BMO for the first time, Kike talks about next year, and Filly and Scarf figure out who the heck starts and could make the 20 for our next match in Houston. Season 7 is upon us, and our first match of the new year sees us staring down a familiar foe, the Seattle Sounders. Hugo Lloris is Black and Gold, Eduard Atuesta is BACK in Black and Gold, and Carlos Vela still isn't in Black and Gold. But one thing remains the same: LAFC does NOT lose season openers! The match began with another banger of a tifo by The 3252, proceeded by Giorgio Chiellini himself as the match's Honorary Falconer. Jordan Morris wasted no time in welcoming Hugo to MLS, as Lloris needed to make a huge save just minutes into the match. For most of the next hour, LAFC was on the front foot, and goals from Timothy (Himothy?) Tillman and Mati Bogusz on either side of the halftime whistle saw the home side off to a 2-0 lead. Things got interesting after a Seattle penalty kick saw the away side pull within one, but the Sounders never really mustered much more of a threat. LAFC wins the season opener, 2-1! Also on this episode, here's hoping Scarf's theory on Carlos Vela is better than his score prediction, Filly keeps receipts on MLS pundits, and the boys sport retro kits for the first time in several seasons. It's Episode 286, and on this episode, LAFC finally brings home a trophy! It's not quite the one we were hoping for, but don't worry! We play for that in just 7 days! LAFC is on to the MLS Cup Final after defeating Houston in the Western Conference Final, 2-0!A near miss by Carlos Vela and a stunning cross from Hector Herrera punctuated a very entertaining first 10 minutes or so, but then LAFC's defense went to work, stifling Houston for the remainder of the first half. Just before the halftime whistle, a perfect Carlos Vela corner finds the head of Giorgio Chiellini. His initial effort was saved, but playoff goal scorer turned hero Ryan Hollingshead was there to put it away to give LAFC the lead just before halftime. In the second half, Houston certainly had a lot of the ball, but nothing to show for it. LAFC's defense put up yet another goose egg, but not without the help of Ilie Sanchez taking a ball off our own goal line. A late own goal provided the margin as LAFC clinch a berth in the MLS Cup Final! It's on to Columbus!

The Seattle Sounders: Jordan Morris, Cristian Roldan, Raul Ruidiaz, Nico Lodiero, Nouhou, Yeimar, Joao Paulo, and Brian Schmetzer. Lumen Field. Turf. Ted Unkel. Chris Penso. The deck was stacked with reasons why LAFC shouldn't win. Why LAFC shouldn't advance to their third Western Conference Final in our 6-year history. Why the Black and Gold faithful would be rueing another missed opportunity. Well, somewhere along the way, nobody in Black and Gold got the memo as LAFC wins an absolute nail-biter, 1-0, on the road at Lumen Field, over the hated Sounders! LAFC will host the Western Final at BMO on Saturday, December 2nd!Denis Bouanga did it yet again, scoring in the 30' for the match's only goal. From minute one through the end of the 8 minutes of second-half stoppage time, LAFC's defense, led by Maxime Crepeau between the pipes, Giorgio Chiellini at center back, and a huge play by Timothy Tillman, put on an absolute masterclass. What a match! Also on this episode, former LAFC players make their mark on this year's MLS Cup and USL Playoffs, the young kids of LAFC2 and the Academy make their mark on a few youth national team camps, and Filly apparently tries hard NOT to make marks on his nice pants while watching the match. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, and we hope you enjoy Episode 285. It's one of our favorite episodes of the year!

We wasted a lot of time. We played ugly, ugly soccer. And because of that, we beat Seattle in Seattle for only the second time in our teams history, and for the 3rd time in 6 seasons, LAFC is going to the Western Conference Finals, BABY!!!! Just a few short matches ago, we here at Defenders of the Banc were lamenting the lack of scoring, with the number of minutes without a goal reaching into the 400's. Turn the page just one week, and LAFC seemingly can't stop scoring, with 5 in their last match and now 4 today in our win at Austin. Denis Bouanga strengthen's his grip on the Golden Boot while LAFC strengthen's its grip on the #2 spot in the West, and you can hear all about it on Episode 281!LAFC raced out to a 4-0 lead, as Timothy Tillman and Cristian Olivera scored on either side of a Bouanga brace. WIth 15 minutes to go, LAFC got sloppy, allowing a goal from a set piece before a stoppage time header from... Giorgio Chiellini, of all people, to give Austin their second goal of the match and final goal at home for the year. A 4-2 win that Steve still has plenty to talk about? Perfect. Also on this episode, Filly eats an entire head of broccoli. Not cooked, not covered in cheese, not even salted or peppered... just... raw. Scarf almost chokes, we read our tweets live on air, and we bid farewell to Messi, Carson, and Wayne Rooney. It's Episode 281, and it's a good one!

The season started with such optimism: Trophies to play for, history to make, and records to break. Yet here we sit, nearing the end of September and the end of trophy-winning opportunities, and we have absolutely nothing to show for it. In what has been a frustratingly familiar refrain in 2023, LAFC loses to another Liga MX club with a trophy on the line. This time, it's the Campeones Cup at the hands of Tigres, and in the worst way possible: on penalties. LAFC was pummeled out of the gate, as Tigres brought their aggressive style to all parts of the pitch over the first 18 minutes of the match. But as the match wore on, LAFC wore their bruises like badges of honor and began to stem the time and punch back. Coming out of the locker room at the half with a renewed sense of hope, LAFC began taking it to Tigres, until the 63rd minute. In that fateful minute, Chiqui Palacios would earn his second yellow of the match, resulting in a red and LAFC going down to 10 men. But from that moment, LAFC actually played... better! Stiffening their resolve, LAFC continued to take the fight to Tigres. If not for a second touch off a restart by Giorgio Chiellini, LAFC would have walked away with Campeones Cup after a 78th-minute goal. But alas, though the soccer gods did even the sides at 10 men a piece, they were unkind in PK's. LAFC would have two of their chances saved from the first four while Tigres would net all of theirs, and for the third time this season, we see a trophy slip out of our grasp. Also on this episode, we check in on Cifu, playing in three different competitions in Scotland, Scarf reveals his mafia ties and Oreo eating habits, and Filly makes up new words and phrases while reminding the world that Drew Fisher sucks. Come share in our frustration here on Episode 278 of Defenders of the Banc!

We lost the Campeones Cup. The match was pure chaos. We had multiple red cards, multiple fights on the pitch, a late shorthanded goal was called back, and it was decided in PKs. Insanity. There's a lot to be disappointed and frustrated about, and the live chat called it out thoroughly, but LAFC also showed a ton of fight and hung with a perennial Liga MX heavyweight in Tigres til the bitter end. We discuss the good, the bad, and the ref, who was astoundingly awful. Like, truly, incredibly bad. LAFC traveled to St. Louis for the very first time in club history, poised for a showdown against current West #1 St. Louis City SC. While Scarf (and Apple TV) hoped for a high-scoring affair, it turned out to be a defensive struggle in the Show Me State. It's a pod about a 0-0 game! Woo!Tested early, Maxime Crepeau made four big saves to preserve the shutout. Several LAFC players had solid chances, but the highlight of the night was the bicycle kick by Giorgio Chiellini that wasn't just on frame but forced a solid effort by Roman Burki. The match might have been 0-0, but it was certainly entertaining. Also on this episode, Scarf brings up Hello Kitty, regrettably so. We explore all the lineup options moving forward, we wish a very happy birthday to our friend Liz, we look ahead to a "Getting to Know You" pod about Tigres, and we brace ourselves for what me a Filly and all the voices in his head pod after our next match, a weekend tilt in Philadelphia. But that also set the bar high for Darren and Vince to descend further into darkness than "millennial stuck alone in the woods with no internet," so they let Heel of The Foot Geoff Tock come on and liken state of the season to euthanizing a pet, and that took care of that. Episode 262 - No Ferreira, No Problem As Dallas Wins 2-0LAFC looked to get back on the right side of things as they head to take on a Dallas club decimated by injuries and international duty. After a perplexing loss to Vancouver, this couldn't have been a better time to take on Dallas... right?Wrong. Despite missing Jesus Ferreira, Paul Arriola, Obrian, and others, Dallas took over the second half (after Chiellini and Tillman came off), kept LAFC at bay, and walked out of the sweltering humidity of Frisco with a 2-0 win. 7 losses in 10 matches is the prelude to Carson at the Rose Bowl. LAFC falls to second in the Western Conference as questions must get louder about a true 9. The transfer window looms, and we need bodies and rest. Also on this episode, it's Scarf who rants against the antiquated MLS as we get set to play 33 matches by July 15. Yes, that's a record by a WIDE margin. We also take time to remember Chris "Spanto" Printup, founder of Born x Raised and beloved Angelino. Rest well, Spanto.
