Drift Proof is a podcast designed to help you find a little bit more meaning and direction in your life. My name is Andrew Cipriano and I will be your host throughout this journey. I decided to create this podcast after spending tiresome years trying to
In this episode, I speak with counseling master student, Sam Pindur. Sam is currently working in the inpatient psychiatric hospital setting and earning her master's degree on the side. The current health care system in the U.S. is very broken. Profit, liability, and insurance checklists come far before patient care. In order to make changes in the industry, people must be willing to stand up and speak about the injustices that are occurring. In this episode, Sam and I do just that. We also throw in some mental health resources, life coaching, and conversation about tyrannical workplaces. We hope that this conversation will be one of many that make waves in the corruption that is health care USA. As always, thank you so much for listening and enjoy! In this episode, I speak with Restaurant Manager/Graphic Designer Andrew Schnitker. Andrew has worked in many different areas of the restaurant industry including management, serving, bartending, line cooking, event planning, & marketing. He is also an entrepreneur and owns a graphic design company named APS Graphics and Social Media. In this episode, we speak about his journey to his current job as a marketing manager running marketing and events for two restaurants. We also touch briefly on my favorite day of the year, Halloween! As always, thank you so much for listening and enjoy! Resources to check out from the episode:
Today, I have a very special episode for you. This will be the first solo episode where I (Andrew) speak alone in an educational format. In this episode, I cover the seven basic perspectives in psychology. They are the psychodynamic, behavioral, humanistic, cognitive, sociocultural, biological, & evolutionary perspectives. As a bonus, I also touch on the positive and, my personal favorite, the existential perspectives. Understanding these perspectives is paramount in moving forward with your understanding of the mind. In order to know where we are and where we need to go, we must first understand where we have been. Today, we use a mix of all seven (and more) of these perspectives to get a holistic understanding of the individual. My information has come from different sources including my undergraduate textbooks, various YouTube videos, psychological books (some listed below), and different people in my life. As always, thank you so much for listening and enjoy! Resources to check out from the episode: https://emojipedia.org/book/ (
In this episode, I speak with marijuana professional Mitchell Stencel. Mitch and I have been very close friends since 2000 when we moved in next door to each other. Mitch is a great perspective to have on the podcast and has a ton of interesting life experiences. He currently works in the marijuana industry in Lansing, Michigan, the state's capital. It has only taken him a year to become a manager of a six-employee team. Over the last year, he has become much more secure in his plans for the future and is excited to be on the frontline of this upcoming industry. In this episode, we also talk about body image, body dysmorphia, and social media. I want to thank you for listening and remind you that my guests and I are always happy to be contacted with questions, comments, or concerns. Resources to check out from the episode:
In this episode, I speak with social worker, Sophia Considine. Sophia and I work at the psychiatric hospital together. She is my favorite social worker for a number of reasons but first and foremost because of her outlook on life and mental health. As you will learn in the episode, Sophia has experience in a whole range of social work fields. She has worked with children, adults, and couples and she has worked with veterans, schools, substance abuse, inpatient, outpatient, and partial-day programs (PCPs) psychiatric settings. Combined with her long list of experience, her attitude, education, and work ethic make her an invaluable resource in the field. This episode is all about social work and mental health. Along with discussing Sophia's journey and past experiences in the field, we also tackle broad questions like how can we break down the stigmatization of mental health. If you have ever wondered what a social worker does or how to become one, this is the episode for you. I simply cannot believe how much valuable information we were able to pack into eighty minutes of conversation. Resources to check out from the episode:
In this episode, I speak with aspiring psychiatrist and author Don Rea. Don & I work together as mental health technicians at a psychiatric hospital. If you have already listened to episode 6, with Danial Villapando, you will have heard a little bit about the job and industry. Don and I start off by speaking about his journey from high school to working at the psych hospital and we touch on his goals of becoming a psychiatrist. Next, we dive head deep into anxiety, coping, ideology, medication, fear, implicit bias, and talk a lot about the concepts in Don's book which he will plan to publish within the next couple of years. We finish off the episode with a bonus conversation about morality taken from the ideas in Don's book. This conversation was thrilling and got right to the heart of some psychological "hot topics". As always, thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy it! In this episode, I speak with Journalist Megan Kelley. Megan has been one of my friends for a long time and has taken an interesting turn from childcare education to journalism. She currently works for a local newspaper called the Lake Orion Review (our hometown in Michigan), where she runs their website and writes about the local schools, sports, and businesses. Her dream is to one day work as a late-night TV writer. We speak about Megan's career, what she learned from studying journalism in college (aka J-School), anxiety, depression, and we touch again, on the LGBTQ community. We also talk about Megan's coping mechanisms and her journey through grieving after her mother passed away as a senior in high school. This is such a great conversation that covers a whole range of psychological topics and how to find truth in a world filled with opinion-based “journalism”. As always, thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy it! Resources to check out from the episode: https://emojipedia.org/instagram/ (
In this episode, I speak with Nathan Bourne. Nathan and I have known each other for about a year now. Although he is a few years younger than me, he has become an inspiration in my life. He graduated high school as valedictorian and star swimmer in Angola, Indiana. He is currently completing his last year of a combined pharmaceutical Doctorate and MBA degree from the University of Findlay in Ohio. In this episode, Nathan and I talk about different career options in pharmacy. We also talk about some of the pharmaceutical knowledge he has acquired over the last five years and Nathan gives a lot of good insight on the field. We touch on Nathan's experience growing up as a successful student-athlete and his experience being in the closet in high school. Nathan also gives his opinion on the COVID-19 vaccine and where the future of pharmacy is going. As always, thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy it! In this episode, I speak with my friend and coworker Daniel Villalpando. Daniel and I have worked together as mental health technicians for only about 2 months now in the adult female unit at our psychiatric hospital. However, he has been there for about a year total and I have been there (on both the adult women and men's unit) for about 8 months. Daniel is currently applying for medical school for his second year on his journey to get into medicine, but more specifically psychiatry. We talk about his past major of business in college and how he eventually made the decision to switch over to mental healthcare. We also talk about Adderall (ADD for ALL), ADHD, depression, and antidepressants. Although the current system for inpatient mental healthcare is far better than having no system at all, we talk about some things that could be improved to help both the patients and staff more effectively. This conversation has been going on for about 2 months already and I am so happy that he finally decided to come on the podcast. Depending on our schedules, we may be doing another psychiatry and psychiatric hospital episode in the future. Daniel also said it is okay to contact him with any questions about medical school or psychology so feel free to do so on his Instagram link below. As always, thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy! Resources to check out from the episode: https://emojipedia.org/instagram/ (
In this episode, I speak with artist Casey O'Brien. I have known Casey since my first job working at a daycare in an athletic club. We have been friends for about a decade now, and we have taken entirely different approaches to getting our lives together. Casey has always been a very talented artist and one of the most creative, right-brained people that I know. She earned a degree from the College for Creative Studies in advertising design and currently works for an advertising agency. We have a great conversation about her art career, her experience with anxiety, and phobias. We also talk about psychedelics and discuss Casey's experiences with vivid dreaming and sleep paralysis. This episode gets very psychoanalytic in the best kind of way! As always, thank you for listening and I hope you enjoy! In this episode, I speak with my older brother, Gimmy Cipriano... Yes, Gimmy with a G. My dad always says there is no J in the Italian alphabet. Gimmy, along with Sara from episode 2, have been some of the big influences that encouraged me to start the Drift Proof Podcast! Like me, Gimmy is an expert in entry-level jobs and has been searching for a direction to take his life for a long time. He has tried everything from ice cream truck driver to headhunter/talent acquisition specialist. He has been doing stand-up comedy for about 7 years now and it should go without saying that he has a great sense of humor about life. He currently drives for DoorDash but still finds time to continue his stand-up comedy on the side. In order to get a little bit more direction and structure on his career in entertainment, he will begin a year-long film/production school in the fall of this year. Our chemistry is amazing and he has a lot of insight on both drifting through life and choosing to follow your dreams. We cover topics like comedy, censorship, Gim's different jobs, screenwriting, our family growing up, Italian-Americans, driftproofing, and like always, I throw some psychology in there along the way. I really hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it. Thank you for listening and for joining us along this journey! In this episode, I speak with Kerry Broshears. I met Kerry only a few days before recording this episode and we instantly hit it off. Carrie is in his Master's program for dietetics and is currently planning out a future in clinical psychology. He is currently trying to plan out a future for himself that he would actually like to be a part of, something that we all can and should do. We don't agree on everything and for that reason, this episode will be stimulating but respectful. We speak about dietetics, relationships, the gay and trans communities, outcome dependence, narcissism, and the ego. I am so happy to have met someone that is on a similar psychological journey. Although this episode does not cover dietetics and nutrition, I do plan on having Kerry on in the future to discuss those topics in detail. As always, thank you for listening, and enjoy! It extends through the night and into the following day, almost always with a number of affiliated events in the days leading up to and following the main event. Proto-circuit parties in the late 1970s, the precursors of what later became circuit parties, were called disco parties. They lasted only one evening and were held in various large venues in metropolitan areas with large gay populations. *https://www.apa.org/pubs/books/The-Gender-Affirmative-Model-Chapter-1-Sample.pdf (Gender Affirmative Care Model): The major theoretical bases informing the GAM of clinical practice are: (a) no gender identity or expression is pathological; (b) gender presentations are diverse and vary across cultures, requiring our cultural sensitivity; (c) according to current knowledge, gender involves an integration of biology, development, and socialization, and culture and context, with all of these bearing on any individual's gender self; (d) gender may be fluid, and is not binary, both at a particular time point and if and when it changes within an individual over time; and (e) any pathology that is present is more often caused by cultural reactions to gender diversity (e.g., transphobia, homophobia, sexism) than by internal psychological disturbances within the child. https://emojipedia.org/instagram/ (
In this episode, I speak with Sara from The Awake: Not Woke Podcast. We talk about her journey from computer developer/finance major to becoming an Esoteric Conspirituality Realist. Yeah, I know, it's quite the mouthful. We also talk about spirituality but not from the “Woke” perspective. Finally, we talk generally about her plans for herself, her podcast, her life in the future, and how she is actively planning to get there. Sara has a very interesting perspective on life and has no shortage of insight on how to act in the world to maximize meaning and minimize negative emotion.
