Prohibition was a dark time for alcohol drinkers but a lack of booze fueled innovation in the beverage category. And that, friends, is where NORKA's story began. In this episode, entrepreneur Michael Considine tells a great story of how he went down an Akron history rabbit-hole to learn about the city's signature soda that was produced from 1924 through 1962. Without ever tasting the original NORKA, using knowledge gleaned from records and family members of the original producer, Michael recreated the soft drink and even improved it to appeal to today's modern palates. NORKA is currently available in four flavors and is sold as far away as Australia. We also learn how the brand has the potential to expand to other flavors and product lines. This episode is presented with support from Kate's Fish at the West Side Market and Chef Douglas Katz.

The conversation also addresses the workmanlike nature of this Linganore team, the pivot to the individual portion of the wrestling season and the upcoming Frederick County tournament this weekend, which will feature a girls tournament for the first time. What can we expect over these next two weeks of wrestling leading into states? The Nonlinear Library

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 5, 2023 5:33

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: The Plant-Based Universities open letter has now gone public, published by Oisín Considine on September 5, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This afternoon, the Plant-Based Universities campaign published an open letter to University Vice-Chancellors, Catering Managers, and Student Union Presidents in the UK and Ireland calling on them to support the transition to 100% plant-based catering in universities. Over 860 academics, notable figures, healthcare professionals and politicians from the UK and Ireland and around the world have put their names down in support of this initiative, with more than 650 academics representing 94 universities across the globe. In addition to its direct impact, this is a low-cost intervention that has several multi-dimensional avenues for high impact through the norms and behaviours it encourages. In policy spaces, this is known as the Brussels Effect; that is, when a regulation adopted in one jurisdiction ends up setting a standard followed by many others. By influencing key educational institutions to adopt plant-based diets, we not only affect immediate communities but also send ripple effects that can shift global standards toward more ethical and sustainable choices. The Plant-Based Universities campaign is active in over 60 universities in the UK and Ireland, and is ever growing. Since the University of Stirling voted for a transition to fully plant-based catering at all university restaurants and cafes in November of last year, 6 more universities have followed with successes. This is undoubtedly a massive opportunity to kickstart positive change at a large institutional scale with minimal cost or risk involved. Now that the open letter has been released to the public, I would like to invite anyone who knows of any academics, philanthropists, board members of EA-aligned orgs or well-known figures (also politicians, healthcare professionals) who would be interested in signing to share the open letter with them (If you fit into the above criteria yourself, it would be fantastic if you could sign it!). In order to sign the open letter, you just need to email your name, title, role and organisation/institution to info@plantbaseduniversities.org. So far only a small handful of notable figures in the EA community have put their names down, but I believe there would be a large market for support for this campaign in the EA sphere and I want to make the most out of it. I also know that many people who visit the EA Forum are themselves university students. If you are a student and are interested in starting a campaign in your university, you can fill out this brief form and they will get in touch with you. From talking to people who successfully campaigned at their university, you really only need somewhere between 3 and 7 committed students for this, and they provide multiple different online (and in-person if in the UK) training sessions throughout the year (all free of course) along with lots of other useful information and resources. The primary motivation of this campaign may be for universities to limit their contribution to climate change and to shift public opinion in favour of a plant-based food system, but as you're probably well aware if you're reading this on the EA Forum, there are simply so many positive effects of a plant-based food system other than just climate change mitigation. (In fact, you could say this one stone has the potential to kill so many figurative birds, it might even be counterproductive in the end!) I believe this campaign offers a potent way to align our institutions with values that benefit all. Engagement and critical insights can make it even more effective, so please share your thoughts in the comments. I'm in the group chat for sending the emails before the letter was released, and have been liai...

Welcome back to the Professional Drinkers Podcast! How are you all doing? I hope everything's going well. These past couple of weeks have been quite odd in terms of weather. It's so British of me to start by talking about the weather, but it's been a washout lately. I can't help but feel sorry for the kids who had to endure this downpour after they went through that scorching heatwave in June, especially those who were taking exams - including my own kids, I have to admit. So, yeah, things aren't ideal over here in the UK. Nonetheless, let's stay positive and move forward.   Now, let me share some exciting news. I had the opportunity this week to visit the brand-new Functional Drinks Club, right here in the small Yorkshire town of Wotley, not far from where I live in Horsforth. It's truly fantastic! A big shoutout to Kevin Gillespy, the founder and owner of this club. They've got kombucha on tap, something I've never seen before. And that's not all – they're offering mushroom alcohol-free beers and an array of other non-alcoholic beverages from various brands. It's truly inspiring to witness such a space opening up right here in the North, in Yorkshire. You can probably tell how thrilled I am about this happening practically in my own backyard. I'll definitely be making return visits. I practically bought a sample of every kombucha they had for sale, and I've been enjoying one every evening. Some new favourites have emerged, like the U and I brand – never heard of them before, so I'll need to give them a shoutout for their fantastic kombucha.   Speaking of exciting developments, we're also gearing up to launch new services. We've recently taken on some wonderful clients and we're working on specialized services for the grocery and finance sectors. If you're involved in grocery retail or supplies, or if finance is your area – whether it's credit, accountancy, or loans – we've got something special in the works. These services aim to provide a safe and confidential space in the workplace for people to explore their relationship with alcohol, free from judgment. We're building on the success of the Sober Curious Society at the Co-op, and I can't wait to share more details. If you want a sneak peek or more information, drop me a note at hello@choosesunrise.co.uk. You can also check out our events page on the website for upcoming sessions.   Now, let's dive into this week's guest. I'm thrilled to introduce Karl Considine, an HR director and the host of the captivating podcast "What Next." This podcast delves deep into personal recovery journeys, and Karl is an exceptional host. He's been sober for over two years now, and in our conversation, he offers insightful perspectives on individual responsibility and the influence of work environments on drinking behaviours. Karl's own experiences in various roles shed light on the lack of alcohol-related education and policies in workplaces. He emphasises the need for more nuanced approaches, especially in environments like startups where social drinking is often part of the culture. As always, it's an engaging and enlightening discussion, and I hope you enjoy listening to Karl's insights as much as I did.   Remember, you can find more about Karl and his podcast, "What Next," over on Instagram @whatnext.podcast. Thank you for joining me this week, and I look forward to sharing more exciting conversations and developments in the world of Professional Drinkers. Cheers!
