For many LGBTQ+ people, the pub wasn't just somewhere to grab a drink—it was one of the few places where they could safely be themselves. For decades, bars and clubs became places of acceptance, community and belonging. But when alcohol becomes woven into your identity and social life, what happens when you decide to stop drinking? For many people, giving up alcohol means changing what they drink. For many LGBTQ+ people, it can also mean changing where they belong. This week, Victoria sits down with Karl Considine, public speaker, advocate and Ambassador for Alcohol Change UK. Karl has become one of the leading voices in the UK's alcohol-free movement, using honesty, humour and lived experience to challenge old ideas about sobriety. Karl is helping a new generation build confidence, connection, and identity without alcohol. Through his work, he has helped show that a life without alcohol isn't about missing out—it's about creating more connection, joy and possibility.Together, they explore the powerful relationship between booze and queer culture. They discuss why LGBTQ+ communities experience higher rates of alcohol and substance misuse than the general population, the role discrimination and minority stress can play, and why creating alcohol-free spaces has never been more important. It's an honest conversation about identity, connection, loneliness, community and what it means to build a life where you don't need alcohol to feel like you belong. Whether you're part of the LGBTQ+ community or simply curious about why our relationship with alcohol is shaped by so much more than willpower, this episode is full of compassion, insight and plenty of laughs along the way.

In this episode we welcome Karl Considine onto the pod, founder of the AF bar Love From in Manchester! Karl is also the host of sobriety pod (big up the sobriety pods!) What Next. After kicking the booze himself, Karl saw that there was a massive gap in the market for somewhere that non-drinkers could go out and have a nice drink without being surrounded by alcohol. We had a wonderful time chatting to Karl on the pod and are massive supporters of everything that he's doing for the alcohol free community. We're already looking forward to the next time we have him on the pod! If you're in the North West of England, make sure you stop by and visit Love From in Manchester city centre and you can check out his What Next podcast here. --- Get In Touch: Of course, you can always get in touch with us (publicly or privately) on our socials - @alcoholfreepod on Instagram, or search for "Over The Influence" on Facebook. Karl Considine lives in Manchester UK, is in his third year of sobriety, and life couldn't be more different than it was a handful of years ago. From alcohol and drug addiction to now being happy, healthy and hosting a podcast called What Next in order to help other people who would benefit from getting sober. Karl and I touch on the glaring similarities in our stories and how the “party lifestyle” is so accepted and oftentimes associated with gay culture. If you are queer and struggling OR in recovery and just fabulous, this episode is for you! Slay! :-) You can connect with Karl on IG @whatnext.karl or find out more about the podcast @whatnext.podcast -------- The Sobriety Diaries is a video podcast where we share powerful stories of recovery told by those who lived them.
