Think about the last time you tried to work on yourself. Chances are you started with a list of everything that's wrong with you — what you don't like, what you should be doing, and what you want to "fix." But what if thinking about yourself as "broken" is the thing that's keeping you stuck? My guest today is Dr. Paul Conti, a Harvard- and Stanford-trained psychiatrist who runs the group practice Pacific Premier Group. He started out in the business world, but after losing his brother to suicide, he turned to mental health full-time. He's the author of Trauma: The Invisible Epidemic and his new book, What's Going Right. Some of the things we discuss are: Why leading with "what's wrong with me" might make you avoid looking at your mental health altogether How losing his brother to suicide changed how Dr. Conti sees high-functioning people who are silently struggling The three drives that shape your mental health — and the one that determines whether you actually feel happy with your life Why high-functioning, hard-working people often have a low generative drive without realizing it Why doing more isn't always the answer — and when doing less is a better choice The two completely opposite stories you can tell about your own life (and why you get to choose which one is true) The question to ask yourself every morning that shifts you out of dread Related Episodes 236 — 10 Myths About Mental Health That Are Holding You Back 308 — Pause. NOW THE MAJOR MOTION PICTURE NUREMBERG STARRING RUSSELL CROWE AND RAMI MALEKIn 1945, an improbable relationship between the fallen Reichsmarschall, Hermann Goering, and ambitious US Army physician, Douglas Kelley, becomes a hazardous quest into the nature of evil“The book is a page turner.”—NPRA New York Times BestsllerIn 1945, after his capture at the end of the Second World War, Hermann Göring arrived at an American-run detention center in war-torn Luxembourg, accompanied by sixteen suitcases and a red hatbox. Joining him in the detention center were fifty-one senior Nazis, of whom Göring was the dominant figure. To ensure that the captives were fit for trial at Nuremberg, the US army sent an ambitious army psychiatrist, Captain Douglas M. Kelley, to supervise and evaluate them. To Kelley, it was the professional opportunity of a lifetime: to discover a distinguishing trait among these arch-criminals that would mark them as psychologically different from the rest of humanity. But Kelley's quest would prove to be a dangerous one. The more he spoke with the Nazi captives, the more he began to understand and appreciate their perspective—and the more he would fall for their charms.https://amzn.to/4xb09VdBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Dr. Palmer has become one of the leading voices exploring the connection between metabolism, nutrition, and mental health, challenging decades of conventional thinking about psychiatric disorders. He and Willy discussed why mental illnesses may actually be metabolic disorders affecting the brain, the science behind ketogenic therapies and psychiatric recovery, and how lifestyle, stress, sleep, and nutrition can dramatically impact brain health. They also explored what this emerging research could mean for the future treatment of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. Learn more about your ad choices. Psychiatrist and Clinical Assistant Professor Dr. Sue Varma's groundbreaking work shows that “optimism” goes beyond just having a positive outlook – it brings about better outcomes. Optimists tend to achieve more success, report higher incomes and job satisfaction, adopt healthier habits, build stronger relationships, and experience greater overall life satisfaction, ultimately leading to increased happiness. Sue states simply that “optimists may be born, but practical optimists are made.” Practical Optimism is a mindset that can be learned – and Practical Optimism lays out a roadmap to success. The conversation underscored the value of servant leadership, the ripple effect of goodwill, and the necessity of self-care before helping others. Key points included the significance of respect, the power of positive influence, and the need for mentorship across age groups. The session concluded with a call to action for continuous personal and professional growth.Quote: "Strength Does Not Come From Physical Capacity" ~ Inner Strength: Mahatma Gandhi, it comes from an indomitable will, highlighting that resilience is a mental and spiritual trait.Your Co-Hosts Today:Mike (Mak) Makhoul, Former Educator, now a Commercial & Residential Real Estate Professional,https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-makhoul-m-ed-bb995069/Chris Saraceno, Author of The Theory of 5,https://theoryof5.com/and Vice President of Kelly Automotive Group.Jesse Dugan, Founder and Chiropractor,https://www.pain2performancechiro.com/Ony Momah, Psychiatrist,https://onymomah.com/ Today's Top 3 Takeaways:ONY MOMAH:The significance of mindset, particularly for men, and the importance of surrounding oneself with positive influences.Discusses the concept of identity decompression, particularly for athletes and professionals transitioning to new roles.Audience advice to be cautious about the people they allow into their lives and to take care of their minds.CHRIS SARACENO: The Theory of 5, involving spirituality, marriage, children, business, and health, and the importance of surrounding oneself with the right people. The importance of leading by example and not needing a direct coaching role to positively influence others.Greater appreciation for the importance of continuous growth at any stage of life.JESSE DUGAN: Emphasizes the importance of in-person connections and the benefits of activities like powerlifting and outdoor activities. The importance of showing care and truly connecting while building trust with clients aka patients. The value and role of greater trust in the profession of chiropractic care practices.MIKE (MAK) MAKHOUL: The importance of strong faith and keeping a spiritual connection to maintain a positive mindset. The importance of setting standards and living by values, and the need for continuous self-improvement.Mak shares a quote attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi about teaching and preaching the word of God through actions.Mentioned Influencers:Honorable mentions of earlier visitors who had to depart before recording included:Justin Schenck, Founder of The Growth Now Movement and The Growth Now Summit LIVE,https://www.justintschenck.com/Rob Eschbach, Founder of F13 Performance,https://f13performance.com/and Resistance Strength,https://www.resistancestrength.fit/ Watch us on YouTube:https://youtu.be/rJsGRg-TYQ4 Scott's Final Words of the Show:I've been using those quote for years: "We are the product of the five people we spend most time with." This is a translation from the famous Jim Rohn quote: "You are teh average of the five people you spend the most time with." This is about that psychological shift, when you start changing the people that are around you. I've said this years ago, it doesn't mean you have to cut them out of your life. Some distance is necessary when you are looking for growth. If they don't respect that, if you respect them enough, and you want them to respect you in return, and you must let them know that. If you do not, they will still continue to not take that seriously, then you need to give them a break. This is important when you're trying to grow, so you can help them in the future, or those around you, and it's like, hey guys, I need to take a pause. There you go, ladies and gentlemen, great combo. I'm gonna sum this up. We're here to FUEL your health, business, a lifestyle. Eric Jarvis is a Professor of Psychiatry at McGill University whose work brings attention to areas often overlooked in mainstream psychiatry, including religion, coercion, the social determinants of psychosis, and culture. He directs the Cultural Consultation Service, the First Episode Psychosis Program, and the Culture and Psychosis Working Group at the Jewish General Hospital, and is Editor-in-Chief of Transcultural Psychiatry. His research looks closely at how religious belief, spiritual practice, moral worlds, language, migration, racism, and social context shape how people experience distress, meaning, and healing. In this conversation, we explore how faith, culture, and power shape mental health practice. We discuss Jarvis's work on religion and spirituality in cultural psychiatry, his research on culture and the social causes of psychosis, and his studies of coercion in first-episode psychosis. We also talk about category fallacies, looping effects, and what happens when biomedical explanations of suffering collide with spiritual, familial, and community-based understandings of distress. *** Thank you for being with us to listen to the podcast and read our articles this year. What if everything you've been told about mental health is backwards? In this episode of Mayim Bialik's Breakdown in honor of Mental Health Month, Dr. Paul Conti (psychiatrist & President of Pacific Premier Group PC) reveals why focusing on what's wrong with you may actually be keeping you stuck, and how a completely different approach can unlock resilience, hope, and real change. We dive into the shocking truth that MORE THAN HALF of physical health issues may originate from mental health, and why treating symptoms alone (with medication or endless information) often misses the root cause entirely. You'll learn why overdiagnosis is more dangerous than you think, how self-fulfilling prophecies quietly shape your reality, and why “feeling fine” might be the biggest thing holding you back. Dr. Conti breaks down the hidden long-term effects of trauma, including how it impacts longevity and can even be passed down genetically, and why the cycle of intergenerational trauma can stop with you. He shares his personal story, the critical difference between grief and trauma, and why letting go of guilt and shame is essential for true healing. We explore why mental health stigma still exists despite everyone talking about it, why it's so emotionally difficult to examine your own mind, and why you can't separate mental and physical health, no matter how much we try. We also discuss: - Hidden root behind multiple symptoms you didn't know were connected - Why more information won't help unless you can actually apply it - Surprising reason relief from distress doesn't equal happiness - How your recurring thoughts may be shaping your entire life - Why giving back can make you feel whole in ways nothing else can Plus, we tackle some of the most controversial topics in modern mental health: - When medication should (and shouldn't) be used - Dangers of turning to AI for therapy - Why elevating science to the level of “truth” can actually limit human growth Most importantly, Dr. Conti introduces a powerful, practical framework: using compassionate curiosity to re-examine your life story - so you can begin healing, even without professional therapy. If you've ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or like you're missing something important about your own mind, this conversation might change how you see yourself forever! Psychiatrist and longtime psychedelic researcher Scott Shannon, MD, CEO of the Board of Psychedelic Medicine and Therapies, and founder of Wholeness Center, discusses how a new federal push to accelerate psychedelic therapies could reshape the future of mental health care.
Dr. Awais Aftab, psychiatrist and author of a powerful new New York Times essay, argues that diagnoses like ADHD, autism, depression, and bipolar are not precise biological diseases revealed by genes or brain scans but practical clinician judgments about recognizable patterns of distress and behavior. We synthesize Aftab's pragmatic perspective with long-standing critiques from Allen Frances (chair of the DSM-IV task force), the NIMH's shift to the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) project under Thomas Insel, and decades of research on comorbidity, symptom heterogeneity, and diagnostic instability.
It's mental health awareness month, so we're throwing it back to this powerful framework to help manage your mental health. Everyone knows about the tape — a father recorded threatening to destroy Michael Jackson. It's been cited for decades as the clearest evidence of extortion. What most people don't know is that a lawyer had already obtained a psychiatrist's letter suggesting abuse two days before that recording was made. That timeline changes the entire framing of the 1993 Chandler case, and in this Hidden Killers Week in Review, Tony Brueski breaks down why both the extortion narrative and the abuse narrative are more complicated than their loudest advocates admit.Tony walks through the Chandler case chronologically — the private investigator interview where Jordan Chandler reportedly said nothing happened, the twenty-million-dollar demand, the custody war that compromised the investigation, the strip search photographs both sides weaponize as evidence, and the twenty-three-million-dollar settlement that Jackson's legal team characterized as a business decision while victims' advocates call it an admission. He also traces how the new biopic was forced into massive reshoots because its ending unknowingly violated an existing legal settlement, what the Cascio family allegations add to the picture, and why a civil case potentially worth hundreds of millions appears to be building.Jordan Chandler remains the central figure no one can hear from. He emancipated himself from both parents, severed ties with the case entirely, and has not spoken publicly in over three decades. The most important witness in arguably the most famous abuse case in modern history chose silence. Tony presents the evidence that cuts for Jackson and the evidence that cuts against him, and explains why honest engagement with this case means sitting with discomfort rather than reaching for easy answers.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Dr. Paul Conti is a psychiatrist, trauma specialist, and author whose work centers on one deceptively simple idea: that understanding yourself is the most powerful thing you can do for your mental health. In this conversation, we explore how the unconscious mind quietly sets the boundaries for how we think, feel, and move through life, and how much of what we assume is just "who we are" was actually formed long before we had the words for it.What struck me most in this conversation is Paul's insistence that looking inward doesn't have to be frightening. He introduces the concept of the generative drive, the part of us that moves toward creativity, altruism, and genuine contribution, and makes a compelling case that this is what separates a life that feels full from one that simply accumulates. We also get into the myths we build from isolated facts, why the traditional psychiatric model falls short, and what it actually means to bring compassionate curiosity to yourself.BiOptimizers - Best magnesium to enhance your sleephttps://www.bioptimizers.com/knowthyselfUse code KNOWTHYSELF for 15% off at checkoutTry LMNT & get a free sample pack https://drinkLMNT.com/KnowThyselfAndré's Book Recs: https://www.knowthyselfpodcast.com/book-list___________00:00 Intro02:05 Assessing Mental Health Like Physical Health03:04 The Unconscious Mind and Its Hidden Influence06:30 How Identity Forms in Early Childhood08:23 Compassionate Curiosity as a Practice11:02 Empowerment, Agency, and the Healthy Self15:34 The Assertion, Pleasure, and Generative Drives24:26 What Humility Actually Means27:09 Ad: BiOptimizers28:18 Shame, Feelings, and the Lessons We Carry35:10 How Memories Build the Myth of Self42:32 Ad: LMNT43:41 Waking Up vs. Growing Up48:10 The Limits of Diagnosis-Driven Psychiatry51:07 What We're Really Striving For58:18 Self-Worth and External Achievement1:02:12 Anxiety as Adaptive and Maladaptive1:09:52 Defense Mechanisms and How They Shape Us1:16:51 Tools for Self-Inquiry and Lasting Change1:25:52 Repeated Patterns and Relational Wounds1:29:45 Hard-Won Growth and Gratitude1:32:12 Paul's Personal Story: Loss and the Path to Medicine1:37:17 Presence, Suffering, and the Art of Helping1:41:35 Closing Message: Your Mind Is Your Friend___________Episode Resources: https://www.drpaulconti.com/https://www.amazon.com/Whats-Going-Right-Powerful-Optimizing/dp/1538776049https://www.instagram.com/andreduqum/https://www.instagram.com/knowthyself/https://www.youtube.com/@knowthyselfpodcasthttps://www.knowthyselfpodcast.com

For decades, psychedelics like LSD, psilocybin, and MDMA were regarded as dangerous drugs of abuse — but that's started changing as research increasingly reveals their ability to help treat serious mental health issues. On this episode, we listen back to past conversations about the science behind these drugs' therapeutic potential, along with powerful stories of healing. When Marcus Capone retired from the Navy SEALS in 2013 after more than a decade of service, he found himself at loose ends, and battling a deep depression. He cycled through antidepressants and other prescription medications, but nothing worked — until his wife suggested a radical alternative: psychedelic-assisted therapy. Capone describes his experience with ibogaine, how it changed him, and why he thinks it worked when nothing else did. Capone is the co-founder and chairman of VETS: Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions, and is featured in the documentary “In Waves and War” now on Netflix. Psychiatrist and researcher Rachel Yehuda explains the science behind psychedelic-assisted therapy, and what she's learned about its potential to treat PTSD in veterans. She leads the PTSD clinical research program at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in New York City. MDMA — otherwise known as ecstasy or molly — is best known as a party drug, but in recent years, scientists have begun investigating it as a treatment for PTSD. We talk with science journalist Rachel Nuwer about the history of MDMA, the science behind its therapeutic potential, and how it helped change one woman's life. Nuwer's book is called “I Feel Love: MDMA and the Quest for Connection in a Fractured World.” Cluster headaches can be debilitating — but a little over a decade ago, a group of sufferers, who call themselves “Clusterbusters,” began investigating the potential of psilocybin, otherwise known as magic mushrooms, to treat their intractable pain. We talk with sociologist Joanna Kempner about her research into the group and their mission, documented in her book “Psychedelic Outlaws: The Movement Revolutionizing Modern Medicine.”
What kind of person helps build a regime like the Third Reich? A monster? A madman? Or something far more unsettling? Michael Shermer sits down with author Jack El-Hai to talk about the true story behind Nuremberg. At the center is Dr. Douglas Kelley, the American psychiatrist assigned to evaluate the top Nazi defendants after World War II, including Hermann Göring. What he found was not comforting: many of these men were intelligent, ambitious, psychologically functional, and disturbingly normal. This conversation gets into the strange duel between Kelley and Göring, the psychological testing at Nuremberg, the limits of psychiatry, the difference between leaders and followers, and the question that still won't go away: how do power-hungry people rise and do evil, and why do so many others go along with them? Jack El-Hai is an author and journalist whose work has appeared in The Atlantic, Smithsonian, GQ, Wired, Scientific American, and Discover. His books, including The Lobotomist, The Lost Brothers, and Face in the Mirror, have been translated into twenty languages. He lectures widely on writing and medical history. His book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist was recently adapted into the feature film Nuremberg, starring Russell Crowe and Rami Malek.
