Lazarus Black is an American author of genre fiction living under the shadow of a Pacific Northwest volcano with three Goddesses, his wife and two daughters. “Psychic Poker” is Lazarus's first sale, but hardly his last. It juxtaposes poker, the synthesis of probability and human behavior, with psychic powers, the solution to both probability and the chaos of free will. What if every player is psychic? What if no player has an advantage? What if their lives are at stake? But the strength of the story is in the reluctant main character: Tyson Young, a middle-aged Aussie with an acute wit. Lazarus writes from life. His stories are inspired by the diverse communities he has lived in, plus friends and family across the globe. He specifically attacks stereotypes and reinvents tropes to reflect authentic experiences that are sometimes stranger than fiction. He once earned a free funeral until the mortician learned his name was Lazarus and a good laugh was had by all (bystanders included). A true lover of learning, Lazarus has traversed North America dozens of times, has been a professional artist, advertising creative, software developer, database designer, epigrapher, executive, educator, inventor, game designer, pool hustler, heathen clergyman, machinist's apprentice, glass blower, scholar, actor, many other roles, and now published author of fiction. He hopes you enjoy “Psychic Poker” and look forward to reading more from him in the future. In the US, there are schools for everything—of course you can study business, or to become a doctor. But also if you want to be an electrician, or an airplane mechanic—someone can teach you that. And then you've got UConn, which has offered an apparently quite intense puppetmaking major, every year since 1964. So why not for shoemaking? Examples do exist, but they are far too scant—you can head to Atlanta to learn shoemaking from Marcel Mrsan, but that's far from the only work he's doing every day. Brooklyn Shoe Space, Cobbler Bushwick, and the Chicago School of Shoemaking are all fantastic and lighting shoemaking sparks every day, although they currently cater more to hobbyists. DW Frommer's school in Montana was a cowboy bookmaking bastion, but it closed when he passed last year. So what about a multi-year, school that teaches shoe design AND making? I just visited one. The College for Creative Studies in Detroit, the impressive design school which has grown a full degree program that heavily involves shoemaking. I spent two days at CCS this past summer to meet with its program chair Aki Choklat, along with bespoke shoemaking toolmaker and faculty member Tom Carbone, plus a whole bunch of very invested students who really knew their way around a sole stitcher. What Aki and Tom are building at CCS is impressive, and dare I say quite needed, in a landscape where it's easier to pick up shoemaking than ever before—as long as you do it online, by yourself—but far too hard in the United States to find quality hands-on teaching. And so we talked about that, how the CCS program came about and has grown, what the hell AI is going to do to the shoe industry, and plenty more. https://www.ccsdetroit.edu/https://www.instagram.com/akichoklat/?hl=enhttps://www.akichoklat.com/2025 dates and location for Stitchdown's Boot Camp 3—the world's fair of shoes and boots and leather and more—coming soon.https://www.stitchdownbootcamp.com/Support the Shoecast and join the most interesting shoe-and-boot-loving community on the internet with a Stitchdown Premium membershiphttps://www.stitchdown.com/join-stitchdown-premium/

In this final episode of the 2024 Listen and Learn series, hosts Dr. Cyndi Burnett and Dr. Matthew Worwood conclude their exploration of classic literature in the field of creativity. They discuss the importance of studying these foundational works to gain a historical perspective and bridge connections between research and creative teaching and learning environments. Together, they dive into the Creative Studies Project, a research study conducted by Sid Parnes and Ruth Noller in 1972 at Buffalo State University. The project aimed to determine if the Osborn-Parnes Creative Problem Solving (CPS) process could be taught and its impact on creativity, academics, and life. The study involved 350 students divided into experimental and control groups, with notable figures such as J.P. Guilford, E. Paul Torrance, and Don MacKinnon serving on the research board. The results of the two-year Creative Studies Project showed significant differences between the experimental and control groups in their ability to cope with real-life situations, produce and evaluate new ideas, and engage in productive, creative behavior. The findings also revealed that 90% of the students believed they would apply what they learned in the program to their future lives and found it valuable compared to other college courses. The hosts emphasize the importance of teaching creativity and its potential to foster psychological health and well-being. To conclude the episode, Cyndi Burnett leads an activity from the original Creative Studies Project curriculum, challenging listeners to generate impossible ideas for improving something and then modify them to make them work. World renowned spatial and 3D design artist, best known for their work as an installation artist, Zhiheng “Leo” Gong recently had his pieces featured in the upcoming exclusive, invite-only “The Other Art Fair” taking place at the Barker Hangar in Sana Monica, CA. Most recently, Leo had his work featured at the illustrious Yiwei Galley during the “Earth Is Just a Rock” exhibition that was shining a light on AAPI artist this past May 2023. “Earth is Just a Rock” considers the shifting dichotomy between the realms of science and mysticism, both significant to the included artists in a range of mediums. In the face of “monstrous creations” of human progress in evolution and technology, the artists search their hearts and minds for moments of vulnerability to find growth and move forward. Leo's dynamic and innovative work has been an accumulation of his artistic expression and his Chinese culture having been born in Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province of China. Unlike conventional two-dimensional art forms like paintings or drawings, Leo's spatial art seeks to interact with the viewer on a multi-dimensional level, often challenging perceptions and pushing the boundaries of creativity. Denise talks to KC Crain, President of the privately held media giant, Crain Communications. Navigating the global transformation of the media industry and building a technology company around media is something he's proud of, with good reason. The family business produces news across publications, lead generation, research and data products, digital platforms, custom publishing, and events, reaching 78 million readers globally; the company's portfolio consists of 24 brands. Crain sites two tough situations he's faced that have helped him to grow. The first was an absolute failure to launch a new business. The second was starting over. He's learned the art of communication, in an environment that provides opportunities to hone his skills, exercising the courage to be honest. “Confidence,” he says, “is learned.” Crain has a passion for learning, investing his time and effort into diving deeply into his subject matter. It makes sense. With increasing knowledge and expertise comes increasing confidence. His advice to those who are thinking of joining a family business is as wise and humorous as it gets, “Go work somewhere else for a while.” He credits his ability to follow in his father and grandfather's footsteps to understanding that no one person has all the answers. You can learn from anyone on the team, older or younger, at any time. Be open-minded and open to change. As a husband and father of five children, he's taken his mom's words to heart—I don't care what happens with the family company, I care what happens at Thanksgiving. Like many Detroiters, Crain has fond memories of the city's sports wins, and the energy its teams bring to the city. But having been in Detroit for over 50 years, Crain has enjoyed seeing the Riverfront and Central Business District come to life. Denise enthusiastically agrees with her guest, “I think we've got one of THE most generous cities in America.” *** KC Crain is President and CEO for Crain Communications, Inc. His previous roles include COO, EVP and Director of Corporate Operations, VP and Group Publisher. He started as a reporter for Automotive News. Crain is board chair for the Detroit Children's Fund and sits on the boards of the Young Presidents Organization, and the College for Creative Studies. He is dedicated to Detroit's economic development with investments and partnerships in real estate and restaurant ventures. Crain earned a BA in Communications from Denison University. He and his wife, Ashley, live in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, with their five children. Denise Ilitch, an owner of Ilitch Family Companies and President of Ilitch Enterprises, has been a part of Detroit's business and philanthropic community for over 40 years. As a mother, lawyer, entrepreneur, devoted community servant and tireless advocate for women and children, she learned early, from her father, that everyone is worthy of contributing to the world. Her passion for affordable, accessible, quality education stems from her own experience as a first-generation student, earning a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, where she currently serves on the Board of Regents. Episode 26: Show Notes.Today's guest is the multi-passionate, multi-talented, Robbie Trevino. Despite what many people from his hometown believe about the art industry, Robbie makes a living as a conceptual artist and illustrator. He works in a wide range of fields, and is always open to whatever new opportunities present themselves to him; right now he's working on designs for a skateboard deck, shoes, and a car wrap! He has also immersed himself in the world of NFT's (after a lot of initial skepticism towards the idea), which has opened up so many doors for him. In today's episode, Robbie shares his journey from sci-fi obsessed school boy in a town full of factory workers and sports fanatics, to the interesting experiences he had as a blue collar worker in numerous industries, to the successful artist he is today, and what he plans on doing if his career takes a turn for the worse. Cars and food are also a major feature covered in this conversation, and Robbie has some advice to share which may sound simple, but is probably one of the most profound and inspiring things you'll ever hear! Welcome to Ska Boom Interviews, which is the audio companion to my book Ska Boom: An American Ska & Reggae Oral History now available from DiWulf Publishing and Amazon. The goal of this podcast is talk about ska and reggae with an emphasis on American ska and reggae history and the bands, musicians and people who have helped to create and influence a uniquely American version of ska and reggae that spans from the late 70s until today. In this episode, I'm speaking with Grammy nominated reggae legend Pato Banton.Born Patrick Murray in London, Pato was left for dead at the age of five, an orphan at six, a doorman and “lookout” for illegal late-night parties by eight, a DJ on a Jamaican sound system by twelve, and dropped out of school for good by thirteen. He was winning rap battles by age fifteen, became the father of three children at seventeen, and was incarcerated for the first time at the age of eighteen. By nineteen he was touring with UB40, and by twenty was at the top of the music charts in the UK. He spent his twenties and thirties recording album after album and touring around the world tirelessly, culminating in a Grammy nomination. By forty, the middle-school dropout became the Head of The Music Department at one college and Assistant Director of Creative Studies at another, even creating his own school and music program for disadvantaged youth in Birmingham. By fifty, Pato was homeless (by choice), living in an RV in a parking lot in Los Angeles. Now sixty, Pato lives simply but comfortably with his wife and still continues to tour the US and the rest of the world extensively and has become a minister. Throughout it all, he's never stopped being a father to his eleven children, never stopped touring, and never stopped spreading his message of positivity and love.Ska Boom is hosted/produced by Marc Wasserman and co-produced/engineered by Rob George. Please note: The music clips included in this podcast fall under the “Fair Use Doctrine” as defined by Section 107 of the Copyright Act.
